Benitez Has Hinted This Man Could Be Newcastle’s New Captain

5:53 pm, Saturday, July 16th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 21 Comments

Most Newcastle fans would have been pleased that 22 year-old Jamaal Lascelles was the Newcastle captain today in the 6-0 rout of Bohemian at Dalymount Park in the first friendly of preseason.

The Magpies played well and we had  six different goalscorers in Matt Ritchie, Aleksandar Mitrovic (penalty), Dwight Ritchie, Florian Thauvin, Rolando Aarons and Gini Wijnaldum.

Jamaal Lascelles – could become Newcastle captain

The best two goals were from Ritchie and Gayle.

Rafa will have a decision to make soon on who will be the Magpies captain next season, especially if Newcastle cash in on Moussa Sissoko, who was the surprise captain in the final few games of last season.

This is what Jamaal has said after the game today about the captaincy:

“The manager told me today I would be captain.” “We have not spoken too much about it, but have had little hints.”

“But I will be happy either way. The main thing is getting results.”  “With the quality of the players we have, we can do well.

“We get on well outside of football here.” “It is underestimated how important the changing room is here.

“But it was pleasing to win 6-0 and everybody is focused.”

Jamaal doesn’t turn 23 until November so he is still quite young to become the Newcastle captain, but there’s also no doubt he has real leadership capabilities.

The other advantage is he gets on well with Rafa and the two of them seem to see eye to eye on things.

So Jamaal could become Rafa’s man on the pitch to ensure the players are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing in the games.

That’s something we certainly didn’t have last season.

Not sure how you could have Gayle’s goal as better than Aarons’ goal Ed. gayle just hooked it in, Aarons beat a couple of players, played a 1-2 and finished nicely. Anyway..

Lascelles for captain, partly because he has the right attitude and a loud mouth it seems, partly because i dont see another option who is likely to still be here come September. Age doesnt matter i dont think and Lascelles and Mbemba should start the season as first choice also.

I’ve always said I’d like to see lascelles as captain.

He may be the guy to order him team but he’s certainly got the passion and the enthusiasm to spur his team on.

Good run out today. Gini and Thauvin look thoroughly disinterested. I’d say sell if we can replace.

On the Sinclair rumour. I would’ve though a year or two ago that he’d have been a decent signing for the championship. That he didn’t really do much at villa or west brom makes me question it.

He was decent at swansea and killed his career by going to city. He was never going to play.

Last I saw Lascelles was against Everton and looked poor in that game.Since then, haven’t seen much of him.He must have improved vastly since then.Wouldn’t mind if he named new Captain. But if Mbemba can speak English well,I will give it to Mbemba. The other thing I am happy about today is the involvement of Wijnaldum & Thauvin.Hope both stay and help the team back to the PL.
And of course if Wijnaldum stays,Wijnaldum should be the captain. The good thing is Wijini hasn’t threatened the club and create a havoc demanding a move, like Cabaye. That in itself shows some kind of faith & loyalty by the chap.
    Good lad!!

If Lascelles is Captain then we’ve got stability as he will surely be with us for some years. Rafa keeps a close watch on people management.

I want Wijnaldum to stay (the kid is class) and maybe even Thauvin as maybe Rafa can bring out the best in him. But I am against Wijanldum being captain if he stays because he is not vocal enough and leaders should be vocal imho. Those that are have a much stronger influence on the team.

    Lascelle for president!!!!!

JP – fair point.Didn”t know whether Wijnaldum is vocal or not though.

Nice to see a load of goals go in, regardless of the opposition. That’s all they can do and it seems like they’ve done it well. Great to see a varied selection of participants as well.

Excellent win, morale booster and a sign of things to come. Much better than the chaotic shambles that was organised by the four stooges last year where getting constantly beat by third division American teams set us up nicely for the season to come.

Good work by the players today, we won today, some say yeah but who did we play, it doesn’t matter who you play as long as you put the effort in, look at Celtic the other night they lost 1-0. So to the person who said we should have won 10-0, whatever.

  • 11 welshgeordie9 // Jul 16, 2016 at 7:40 PM

Keep all the players we’ve got, it won’t just be the forwards scoring, i can see a lot of goals from midfield, i day say last night Ritchie has got a cracking left foot.

So have Blackurn really put Hanley from £6million to £8million, i wouldn’t pay no more than 6.

Are you from Ethiopia? You keep avoiding the question!

  • 14 carl // Jul 16, 2016 at 7:52 PM

“Great to see a varied selection of participants”. We weren’t playing in a four team tournament!

Do you mean good to see so many substitutions and full use of the squad?

  • 15 ShirebrookToon // Jul 16, 2016 at 7:56 PM

Good result today from the lads which was to be expected really. Cracking finish from Richie with his left peg. Aaron’s another that looked good today glad it was only cramp and not another injury. It’s not will Griggs on fire its Mitro lol

I want to know how played each player. Saivet, Sterry, Ritchie, Gayle and others. Something like ratings…

  • 21 Mister Tuff // Jul 16, 2016 at 8:18 PM

Hahaha – Veltmann – people on here have a tendency not to back people that are the subject of abuse and foul gutter language – one or two exceptions though. Most prefer to look the other way or deny seeing it.
There are one or two who despite Eds’ recent plea to respect others/no religion/politics – still disregard the rules – they are “above the law” so to speak.

Jib Jibberish – no need for that foul abusive gutter language – uncalled for.
