Most Newcastle fans would have been pleased that 22 year-old Jamaal Lascelles was the Newcastle captain today in the 6-0 rout of Bohemian at Dalymount Park in the first friendly of preseason.
The Magpies played well and we had six different goalscorers in Matt Ritchie, Aleksandar Mitrovic (penalty), Dwight Ritchie, Florian Thauvin, Rolando Aarons and Gini Wijnaldum.
Jamaal Lascelles – could become Newcastle captain
The best two goals were from Ritchie and Gayle.
Rafa will have a decision to make soon on who will be the Magpies captain next season, especially if Newcastle cash in on Moussa Sissoko, who was the surprise captain in the final few games of last season.
This is what Jamaal has said after the game today about the captaincy:
“The manager told me today I would be captain.” “We have not spoken too much about it, but have had little hints.”
“But I will be happy either way. The main thing is getting results.” “With the quality of the players we have, we can do well.
“We get on well outside of football here.” “It is underestimated how important the changing room is here.
“But it was pleasing to win 6-0 and everybody is focused.”
Jamaal doesn’t turn 23 until November so he is still quite young to become the Newcastle captain, but there’s also no doubt he has real leadership capabilities.
The other advantage is he gets on well with Rafa and the two of them seem to see eye to eye on things.
So Jamaal could become Rafa’s man on the pitch to ensure the players are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing in the games.
That’s something we certainly didn’t have last season.
