Newcastle were first linked with 19 year-old Walsall left-back Rico Henry in January of this year and there’s news today in the local press that Newcastle are now seriously considering making a bid for the twice capped and talented England U-19 International.

The 19 year-old was born in Birmingham and joined local club Walsall at age 11 and he made his first senior appearance for the club shortly after his 16th birthday in July 2013 – in a preseason friendly against Leeds United.

Rico Henry – 19 year-old Walsall left-back

Rico made his full debut for the club in December 2014 as an 18 year-old in the Football League Trophy area semi-finals, as Walsall beat Tranmere on penalties after a 2–2 draw.

Henry started last season as a regular in the Walsall first team and he has so far made 50 appearances with 3 goals for the first team.

But Rico is now attracting some top clubs because of his excellent form and they include Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham and Leicester and if Newcastle sign the lad he would be a very good acquisition and presumably one for the future.

But Benitez will be looking to sign good young players now who can then develop in the next couple of years and be fighting for a place in the first team.

With Rafa in charge and unifying the coaching at all levels of the club that is now can become a successful strategy.

Henry stands 5ft 9ins tall and because of his playing style and speed he has been compared to Arsenal great Kenny Sansom.

While we have a lot of cover at right back we don’t have that much at left back with Paul Dummett and Sadio Haidara being the two natural left footed left back at the club but new signing Jesus Gamez can also play there.

Comments welcome.
