Doncaster Rovers FCnufc emblem

Rafa Benitez has just announced that starting side for the friendly game against Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium tonight and local lad Adam Armstrong gets a start and he’s in the number 10 role.

There are 3 changes from the side that started at Bohemian in Dublin on Saturday and won 6-0.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Matz Sels; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles (c), Vurnon Anita; Jonjo Shelvey, Jack Colback; Matt Ritchie, Adam Armstrong, Rolando Aarons; Aleksandar Mitrovic
Subs: Karl Darlow, Jamie Sterry, Jesus Gamez, Paul Dummett, Isaac Hayden, Cheick Tiote, Henri Saivet, Yoan Gouffran, Ayoze Perez, Dwight Gayle

Vurnon Anita starts a left back which is interesting and it’s another strong side that starts tonight with 10 subs on the bench and Lascelles is again the captain.

Colback and Shelvey are the two holding midfielders.

Gini Wijnaldum arriving at the Keepmoat Stadium tonight

Gini Wijnaldum has trained with the Newcastle squad the last couple of days and he’s traveled to Doncaster, but not in the squad tonight.

The Chronicle is reporting negotiations with Liverpool are not as advanced as had been reported.

Let’s hope the lads can play well together tonight and maybe come away with a good win.

Update – just before kickoff both Florian Thauvin and Gini Wijnaldum – two wantaway players were added to the Newcastle bench – wonder what’s going on?

Comments welcome.

    Apparently not:

Team news – NUFC XI: Sels; Janmaat, Mbemba, Lascelles (c), Anita; Shelvey, Colback; Ritchie, Armstrong, Aarons; Mitrovi?

Subs: Darlow, Sterry, Dummett, Gámez, Hayden, Tioté, Saivet, Gouffran, Perez, Gayle

C’mon armstrong. Score a hat trick. This is your chance to impress benitez

  • 3 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 20, 2016 at 6:51 PM

Looks like arma is playing in the middle of a 3 behind A striker (mitro).

    Sels

    Jan mbem lasc(C) anita

    Colb shelv

    Richie arma aarons

From the squad alone we can all see that we now lack any attacking midfielder.Another position that needs to be addressed

  • 5 BeeGuy // Jul 20, 2016 at 6:54 PM

Any audio or visual of this match?

  • 6 jazzyp // Jul 20, 2016 at 6:55 PM

    Lascelles captain again

  • 7 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 20, 2016 at 6:56 PM

    Jazzy

Yeah we are short there, if and when sissoko and gini leave. SDJ is the only one who fits that role. Perez as a No.10 in there works too, but i’d agree we need to sign an attacking mf player

  • 8 Jib // Jul 20, 2016 at 6:59 PM

    Ha ha
Ed deliberately left the “s” off of Bohemians to put Munster in his place.
    😀

  • 9 Yo-yo // Jul 20, 2016 at 7:00 PM

    YCMIU

Yes agree, if he can stay fit then we do have a master AM in SDJ.
But question is on whether he’ll ever get back to top form as he’s had real bad luck injury wise. I’d love to see him have an extended run in the side.

  • 10 croftus5678 // Jul 20, 2016 at 7:00 PM

    bloody good team that.

come on arma do us proud lad and make rafa keep you at us this season.

shows our depth under rafa now with thauvin/wij/sissoko/tiote not even on the bench.

I think we can expect more signings from Benitez.

  • 12 South_Wales_Geordie // Jul 20, 2016 at 7:03 PM

Arma Ritchie and Aarons, that’s a very young and pacey front 3 with Mitro playing up top to hold the ball up and play it wide to these man, I’m excited to see how these work

@croftus 100%. Plus to have Perez and Gayle as options to come on as fresh legs fills me with optimism. A brace tonight is exactly how Arma needs to start his career under Rafa

  • 21 Toonces // Jul 20, 2016 at 7:17 PM

Just watching a bit of the Chelsea at Wiener AC preseason match on ESPN3. 3 minutes or so into the game, ball is in the air, Ivanovic positioned underneath and jumping to head the ball, Wiener player also jumps and clash of heads ensues with the Wiener player clearly heading into Ivanovic’s noggin. Both players now on the ground holding their heads, Ivanovic clearly getting the worst of this. Referee blows the whistle to stop the game. When the match resumes, the referee does a drop ball for the injury stoppage and not a free kick to Chelsea for the a foul. With the issues of head trauma at a high profile now, why are clash of heads rarely called as fouls? The Wiener player was late trying to head the ball. If the ball had been played into Ivanovic’s feet and the Wiener player tackled late catching his foot or leg it would have been a foul. Why is the late “head” different? I may be making this up in my imagination but these clash of heads need be called more closely by game officials. Sorry for the diverging, non-NUFC rant.

Yo-yo. You need to check the small print. The law will only be applied to 17 of the 20 Premier League teams. Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal are exempt, except when they play each other. On those occasions the home team will be exempt.

  • 63 Hail Wor Ashley // Jul 20, 2016 at 8:37 PM

    2-0 Doncaster right on HT.

Awful marking from a corner left a guy back post with nobody within 10yards of him, headed back across goal to the other stick and he was unchallenged too and nodded it in.

Can’t be said that we’re looking particularly good.

  • 70 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 20, 2016 at 8:41 PM

If ever there was evidence needed to show that we need more creativity and a more senior striker to finish chances then that first half was it!!

Lots of pretty passing and then poor finishing by our players coupled with defensive errors which lead to goals!

Also we need a left back if its going to be Anita as the 2nd choice one!! Hes right footed so its not going to work!

  • 71 dazza // Jul 20, 2016 at 8:44 PM

Play Gini in the second half. Get on the score sheet, pick up a knock. Keep hold.

  • 72 firebug666 // Jul 20, 2016 at 8:44 PM

If we cannot beat these, then how are we suppose to gain promotion two leagues above. Absolutely pathetic first half showing from our lads.

We are misplacing too many passes as well, but at least we try and get the ball back, Shelvey looks week in midfield, and the keeper should take up wrestling I think.

Soooooo happy Widjnaldum and Thauvin are on the bench, suggests Newcastle playing hardball in transfer negotiations, and hang tuff with Sissoko also. No doubt we will be far stronger if they stay. If they go, so be it, but it must be for a premium and ideally some top loans or quality players coming in the other way, in the interests of a deeper, better balanced and hungry squad.

    jazzyp,
It is a blog, you leave an opinion and if somebody doesn’t agree with it they tend to say so.

  • 123 Munster Mag // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:39 PM

well done on the comeback lads. I think not losing 2-0 to Donny is important

  • 124 Rafa Revolution // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:39 PM

  • 125 JP...from The Rock // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:39 PM

  • 127 swemag // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:40 PM

Some random guy makes an heroic effort to stream the game from his mobile and people on here has the stomach to complain.

    Jesus…honestly

  • 128 jimmysmith // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:40 PM

carl, steady pal, I still play…….admittedly it’s only five a side nowadays, and for a team called “The Old Superbs”, but I can still turn it on.

  • 129 Jail for Ashley // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:41 PM

    swemag,
If he’d brought a tripod along with him…..

  • 130 swemag // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:44 PM

…that’s right Jail, lets lynch the guy on his arrival in Toon. 🙂

  • 131 JamesToon // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:45 PM

Shocking first half but Played some decent football in the second half. A lot of chances created, Doncaster didn’t really do anything.

    Howay the lads!

  • 132 carl // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:45 PM

    Jimmy
Walking football is all the rage with the over 55’s.

  • 133 manxpie // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:46 PM

yeah fair play to that lad should’ve only streamed the second half tho!

  • 134 JamesToon // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:47 PM

Top lad at the game steaming it on periscope

  • 135 jazzyp // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:47 PM

    Jail
But it’s always you and only you who feel the need.
As for sticking up for the Fat controller.. Again that’s why after 20 year I stopped going to the games last September after the Watford debacle and haven’t been back since.
As for Rafa..yes I agree he’s the best manager we have had since Sir Bobby but is he not deserving of criticism as I am on this blog ??
Again it’s not nit picking but just an opinion

  • 136 South_Wales_Geordie // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:47 PM

    @JP

From what I could see, he looked very sharp and made some neat little runs in behind. Don’t read too much in to him being pulled off early, purely for squad rotation purposes

  • 137 Jail for Ashley // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:49 PM

    JT,
People have to realize it’s a friendly, it’s all about getting fitness levels back up and trying out new ideas in a competitive game, I hope Sels blunder doesn’t affect him too much.

  • 138 jimmysmith // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:49 PM

F@ck off, walking football. But yeah, ok, you’ve got me, I do mostly walk.

  • 139 manxpie // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:50 PM

sels hasn’t givin me much confidence tho shocking for 1st and in no mans land for 2nd
i hope its just a bit of nerves

  • 140 Bambams // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:50 PM

I had never even heard of ‘perescope’ until tonight.

The lad did well and appreciate his effort.

From what I saw we made a number of chances and ok it’s only a draw but second game into preseason.

  • 141 Moonraker15 // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:58 PM

The new signings are designed to get us out of the Championship, given that players want away and you can’t force them to stay these days what with player power etc. It would be great if Gini, Siss and Townsend had stayed and we would walk the league a bit like last time when the core stayed. I think Rafa still needs some top quality to make sure and it will have to be experienced player(s) at the end of their careers, as prime players won’t come! Anyway, we have the absolute best manager we could have so let’s trust him! Rafa rules!

  • 142 Bobbybee // Jul 20, 2016 at 10:01 PM

Well, considering he hadn’t kicked a ball for two months until last week, I was pretty pleased with Arma tonight. Still nowhere near match sharp, but the brain is still working fine. Maybe should’ve scored but considering his long lay off, I can let that slide.

These pre season games are for one thing only. Preparing for the league by getting match sharp. So tonight wasn’t scintillating, but believe me Rafa’s learnt from tonight. These are just glorified kickabouts to get players back to form. Nothing to panic about though. Only if it stops improving game by game should we be worried.
