At Last – Fee Agreed For Newcastle Target

12:16 pm, Wednesday, July 20th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 29 Comments

Just got back from taking my dog Milo for his one hour morning walk and see there is more good news about Grant Hanley –  that the two clubs have finally been able to agree a fee for the 24 year-old Scottish International center-back.

Seems the news broke about two hours ago.

And it looks like the fee is still only £5.5M so that’s good business for Newcastle – we thought we would have to go higher than that – but Lee Charnley  has finally got a deal agreed – at last – between the clubs.

Grant Hanley £5.5M fee agreed

So it looks like it was third time lucky after our two initial bids of £3.5M and £4.5M were turned down.

We assume there will be no problem with the medical and hopefully we should have Grant travel to Newcastle even today and sign along the dotted line when he agrees terms with Newcastle.

He should be getting much better wages than he will be getting at the moment at Blackburn.

This will other excellent signing for us assuming it all goes through.

Grant will become the 6th summer signing for Newcastle and it looks by our reckoning that we have spent around £11M net so far this summer.

Six players in and seven players have left.

Grant Hanley makes Mike Williamson look quick.

However 5.5mill isn’t bad, what you get with Hanley is a physical centre back, another leader in the side, he tends to be no nonsense.

Still would prefer Lees, Dunk or Duffy but he’s a decent signing.

if rafa wants hanley that bad then he must be good

  • 3 JamesToon // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:24 PM

    g157

have to admit havent watched a lot of hanley, but the fact that he has international experience and leadership skills as he was blackburns captain suggests that hes a decent signing, he will add strength in depth at CB.

Another decent signing for the league we are in… Hopefully Rafa can pull another 20% improvement out of him and he can hold his own if and when we get promoted.

If and when Gini and Moussa leave, that should free up enough money to get another CF who can not only score goals this season but have the potential to improve and score goals in the Prem. Add to that we would seriously need to bolster the middle of the park as Colback is PISS poor, he is a bang average 5/10 every week and Anita is off more than he is on.

My preferred strike partnership would be Mitro and Perez, big strong aggressive type together with smaller quick and skillful player seems to strike the correct note with me.

How about James Wilson of Man U? Apparantly we have asked about his availability. Decent player.

  • 6 Our Toon // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:25 PM

    Hibbit

You ask what we will miss if sissoko and Gini are sold, we will miss a lot with both of them going. 11 goals and 5 assists from gini last and he went missing for large parts. A very good return for a player in his first season, he’s good enough for Liverpool yet not nufc that’s what I don’t understand about our fans.

Sissoko 1 goal and 7 assists, our leading assist player last season, 7 were converted into goals and imagine how many more it would have been if chances were taken.

Answer to your question is that we will miss a lot

Personally I’m worried by this signing. I don’t rate him much. I see alot of other ppl saying it’s a good signing. I think most are going by the fact rafa is happy to take him in our team.

  • 8 Our Toon // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:33 PM

    Shadow

I agree with you hopefully he’s a squad player rather than a starter as I’d prefer lascelles and mbemba

  • 9 ToonRich // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:33 PM

T-P, Wilson is off to Fulham on loan I believe

  • 10 Our Toon // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:36 PM

We need a big squad for the upcoming season, especially with the injury issues we constantly get. 46 games with almost 2 games a week

  • 11 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:36 PM

    Toon-Rich,

Is he? Shame. I’v just been reading we were 1 of a number of clubs asking after him. Hope he dosn’t score against us on the 5th of next month. He’s rated very highly at Man U.

  • 12 ToonRich // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:37 PM

I keep reading “would have preffered Duffy” or one of the other CB mentioned…yet GH has been captain and Blackburns player of the year 2 yrs running? I dont see much wrong with this signing. He’s no speed merchant, but has a decent reading of the game, strong and not scared to get stuck in…thats what we’ll need this year.

  • 13 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:40 PM

Just reading an article on the current Dutch manager. Word has it he wants all our Dutch players to leave haha! That’s a canny few!

  • 14 G // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:43 PM

I’m getting bored of repeating this now. Hanley isn’t particularly quick, nor is he particularly slow, in fact, I would describe his pace as bang average for a footballer. My nephew informs me his pace rating on a football video game is low, therefore he must be slow. Watch the kid play first, he’s no snail, and his reaction timings (far more important than pace) are spot on. Whilst I don’t rate his chances of being able to step up to the Premier League, he has a proven record in this division, and will in no way disgrace himself.

  • 15 Mister Tuff // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:46 PM

Hanley – a non starter – do not think so.
Definite starter for the majority of games -taking into account the number of games/rotation.
But he’ll play the bulk of games.
Surprised some take the opposite view.

  • 16 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:49 PM

    G,

I think he will do alreet in this League and do a good job for us. It’s next season if were promoted as you say where the concerns are. He will more than likely sign a 5 year deal and my worries were we may be stuck with a Williamson esque signing for a long time. A trier but not really good enough for the Premier League.

All the best to the lad though. Let’s concentrate on promotion first and see how he gets on.

  • 17 manxpie // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:51 PM

    Sisko 1 goal 7 assists 38 games
    townsend 4 goals 2 assists 16 games
matt ritchie 4 goals 6 assists 37 games

nah not missing much in Sisko’s case I’ll say again if we get anything above 25 mill it will be deal of the century

  • 18 posada // Jul 20, 2016 at 12:56 PM

Do we think this lad is a good signing or are we all happy simply because the club is spending money.
By all accounts he is slow. Had enough of that with Collo and MW.
Does this mean that Raffa does not rate Lascelles or Mbemba.
5.5 Mill is a lot for someone to provide cover for those two.

  • 19 lordy_geordie // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:00 PM

Rafa wants back up in every position, there will not be any two centre back pairing. Would not surprise me if Hanley and Las are Captain and Vice. The y dont play with each other and which ever starts is captain. We need two squads and we are nearly there.
Why don’t we go for subotic? Valued at 8m and boro jus missed out on him. That would be class.

  • 20 JDdubai // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:00 PM

    Posada

Im happy with it. He’s 24, plays internationally for the Scots, is Blackburn Captain and knows this division – no brainer for me. It doesnt mean he doesnt rate Mbemba and Lascelles, we only have 2 CBs on the books so we need at least 4 knowing our injury record.

And if we go up then Id be happy with him as maybe 4th choice CB, the Willo replacement for the squad. But also Wes Morgan would look about Hanley’s level before last season so you never know how good someone will become.

  • 21 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:05 PM

Off topic, but what has happened to Steve Bruce’s accent? He’s only in Hull!

  • 22 Moonraker15 // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:12 PM

    Toon prodigy
I noticed Bruce’s accent has turned cockney as he’s trying to emulate an “England” manager.

  • 23 G // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:13 PM

TP @ 16, he may well surprise us if we get promoted, and be able to do a job there. I suspect this is his level though. Either way, if he signs for us, he can do a decent job in the division we are in. If we do get promoted, he should have plenty of suitors in the Champo, or next seasons relegation fodder (Boro, Mackems & Burnley).

  • 24 Moonraker15 // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:16 PM

Looks to me like Rafa is covering all possibilities of injuries. He cannot afford not to get promoted as I don’t think there’s a plan b, which is good news for us.
To that end I expect another striker at least and a creator who can score a goal.
    Good times ahead !

  • 25 Moonraker15 // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:22 PM

Sissoko’s man of the match performance in the final of the Euros, produced absolutely nothing( no goals and no assists despite some great runs at the Portugal defence. This is a typical performance for him and although I think he could be a revelation in the Champs, he will disappear in the Premier. So get 25 million and get someone in who can dominate teams! Good times!

  • 26 neverwin // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:24 PM

My favourite player [outside of a Black and White shirt} was Bobby Moore and he was anything but quick.
He made up for that by his anticipation and reading of the game.
Not saying Hanley is in same league of course.

  • 27 giimps // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:28 PM

Not just injuries, Mbemba may be away to acon in Jan/Feb and Rafa will want quality and experience in for cover and guidance, Hanley will be the experienced father figure, and either mbemba or Lascelles will miss out , rotation in this league will be crucial too.
Both mbemba and Lascelles have a bit of pace, our fb will in all likelihood sit in apart from the odd foray forward and we will rely on our cm/wingers and forwards for creativity, the chances of 90%of this league getting in behind us is minimal so pace isn’t a problem at the back, most teams will be playing in front of us and we will need our pace to break them down and a good dm and high pressing from our forwards most games.

  • 28 dazza // Jul 20, 2016 at 1:29 PM

We need goals to come up. Gini and Sissoko would have scored and created goals. Last time we got promoted our top scorers were:
    17 Andy Carroll
    17 Kevin Nolan
    13 Peter Lovenkrands
    10 Shola Ameobi
With a handful of others chipping in with 2-5 goals.

    Can we expect the following?
    Mitro – 17?
    Gayle – 17?
    Ritchie – 13?
    Perez – 10?

I feel like we are missing a goal scoring CM like we had in Nolan. Can’t see Shelvey knocking in 13 goals.

  • 29 matt11_25 // Jul 20, 2016 at 9:41 PM

Not worried by the signing at all. He won’t be starting (most of the time) and he will be a quality backup
