Rafa Benitez May Bring In Another Defender

10:43 pm, Wednesday, July 20th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 6 Comments

We have been linked with Derby County skipper Richard Keogh for over a year now and we are again being linked with the Irish International defender, who has experience in the Championship and ample leadership skills.

Grant Hanley of Blackburn is currently on Tyneside taking his medical and we expect him to be announced tomorrow, but Rafa Benitez may want to further strengthen the defense, especially after our first half display tonight against Doncaster Rovers when we looked very shaky at the back – again.

Richard Keogh – a Newcastle target?

Richard is getting on a bit and turns 30 next month, but we still need more experience and leadership in this Newcastle side

Keogh could have been in the sights of Newcastle only in case we failed to sign Grant Hanley, but there’s a chance Rafa may want to bring him in even if Grant arrives at the club tomorrow.

There was a report today in the Chronicle saying the 14 times capped Irish International was a target.

Richard joined Derby County from Coventry City in 2012 and he as played in the Championship since then; he is the captain of the club, but is now entering the final year of his contract.

We do have three recognized center-backs when Hanley joins us – we also have Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba – and in addition Gamez, Dummett, Hayden and Janmaat can all play at center-half.

So in that sense we should be OK at center-back, so maybe we need a left-footed left-back brought in since Dummett and Haidara are the only two recognized left-backs we have at the moment and they both tend to pick up injuries during the season.

Newcastle have been linked with 19 year-old Walsall left-back Rico Henry and there was news yesterday we were seriously considering making a bid for the twice capped and very talented England U-19 International.

Richard Keogh has played 198 total games with 7 goals in the past four seasons for Derby County.

He’s a solid defender.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

So not watched the game tonight or any highlights but was my statement yesterday about not having enough creativity right?

Booing players at halftime for a friendly is awful and sinking lower than sissoko comments by chanting we want him out doesn’t send a good message either….overall it sounds like a bad evening for the toon

saying that belfast is gayle an albino too?
    always wondered if he was
    pub question in the future
” who was the first english team to play 2 albino’s?”

if this is true we certainly seem to be buying leaders and that can only be a plus since we seem to have bought mercenaries and mutes recently

ourtoon the first half was shocking we must have had a few hundred passes around our keeper and defence
2nd half much better and quite a few chances just not taken

Sounds like last season mate. That’s my worry by letting sissoko and Gini go, goals from midfield and quality on the pitch is required

sisko can go for me and i don’t see much of a loss tbh
gini i think does have alot of talent but he doesn’t wanna be here so difficult and its only gonna get worse and probably nastier by the end of the window
but if we replace them with hungrier players who are honoured to play for us of the same calibre as ritchie i can’t see a problem
especially as we are a grade below now

It’s a pipe dream to think we will get players like that, let’s see how Ritchie settles first. As for sissoko yes he hasn’t done well here but he brings pace know the counter and can carry the ball commuting more than 1 player which creates space for others. We have a team with no pace at all at present
