Sels, Sterry, Aarons And Gayle All Start At Lokeren

2:21 pm, Saturday, July 23rd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 121 Comments

K.S.C._Lokeren_Oost-Vlaanderennufc emblem

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has just announced the starting team for this our third preseason friendly against KSC Lokeren at the Daknamstadion Stadium.

Rafa makes four changes to the starting side from Wednesday night at Doncaster.

Newcastle (4-3-3): Matz Sels; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles (c), Jamie Sterry; Vurnon Anita, Isaac Hayden, Jack Colback; Ayoze Perez, Dwight Gayle, Rolando Aarons
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Jesus Gamez, Paul Dummett, Cheick Tiote, Jonjo Shelvey, Henri Saivet, Florian Thauvin, Yoan Gouffran, Adam Armstrong, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Grant Hanley is not in the squad today for whatever reason and Matt Ritchie is out with a slight groin strain.

We’re  a little surprised Matz Sels starts in goal again and we thought Karl Darlow would get a full game this afternoon, but maybe Rafa is trying to get Sels bedded in to start for Newcastle at Fulham?

Maybe Karl will see some action in the second half.

20 year-old Jamie Sterry again starts this game, but this time he’s at left-back and he has replaced Vurnon Anita in that position from Wednesday night,  with Vurnon is starting in midfield this afternoon.

Newcastle seem to be playing in a 4-3-3 formation this afternoon and we will look to see a much improved performance in the first half from Newcastle.

That’s especially true for the defense, which was very poor at Doncaster in those first 45 minutes when we have away two sloppy goals.

Rafa again has 10 players on the bench today.

Comments welcome.

I’d like to see Tiote get a run out this afternoon.
He could be important for us this season.

  • 3 JamesToon // Jul 23, 2016 at 2:43 PM

the lineup just screams out the fact that we need a proper left footed left back, we dont want to be predictable like the last few years and just go down the right as dummett just doesnt offer enough going forward

  • 4 Mr Funk // Jul 23, 2016 at 2:46 PM

Definitely need a LB like James says

Robertson, Charlie Taylor, Rico Henry or ????

p.s. Targett is not possible to get in my opinion

  • 5 Jack Root // Jul 23, 2016 at 2:53 PM

    Munster Mag.
In the games at Sunderland and Villa we were set up not to lose. Tactics were not too adventurous and we drew games we should have won. That was last season and lessons have been learnt.

is this match being televised ??

Been saying for ages we need a left back.

But good luck to sterry! Would have liked Thauvin to start

  • 10 croftus5678 // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:08 PM

jesus can play lb and tbh its a bloody god send having a fullback who can defend and more importantly mark a player properly from corners.

  • 11 Jail for Ashley // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:15 PM

I must admit Munster my first concerns when hearing that double UEFA manager of the year and multiple trophy winner Rafa Benitez was on board that we might start playing a defensive brand of football.

  • 12 Jail for Ashley // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:17 PM

    Mag52,
I hope he’s important for us this season, he’s brilliant when on form.

  • 13 Jail for Ashley // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:20 PM

So is Sterry a LB then, I thought he was a right sided defender?

  • 14 AndyMac // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:20 PM

Sterry is only a RB yet Rafa has him on the left just as Anita was on Wednesday ? Surely we can buy a decent LB from somewhere ?

  • 15 Munster Mag // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:25 PM

Jail, if you’re incapable of analysing tactics and approach that’s not my problem

  • 16 Jail for Ashley // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:26 PM

    Andy Mac,
Like I’ve said many times I think we should loan one from Chelsea or Manchester City, Van Arnolt worked out really well last time we were down.

  • 17 NUFCPaul // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:26 PM

I totally trust Rafa and he has more hands on football knowledge than anyone on this blog, but I’m confused about a few things today. If we’re short of CBs right now, why is he playing Hayden in midfield and not as a CB replacement in the second half? And why is he playing two RBs in the first half when he has two people who can play LB on the bench?

Interesting choices to start to say the least!

  • 18 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:26 PM

They should have streams of all of our friendlies available from the club website!

We really need a left back surely its got to be a priority with the money we have available!?

Also we need guaranteed goals and creativity we should look to sign Mccormack , Pritchard and another midfielder who has goals in them as well as a few more youngsters like that Rico and Che Adams to build the squad up

Looking at the turmoil that Hull City are in we should try take advantage and look at getting Diame or Robertson from them as they will be getting relegated for sure

  • 19 Shadow_Shearer // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:27 PM

Why play sterry left back & leave dummet on the bench??
Also why is the central defence always lascelle & mbemba??
Not gonna argue with rafa, but I will argue we are lacking depth.

  • 20 Munster Mag // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:27 PM

Jack Root, fair answer, but it cost us in 6 point games. Maybe you can teach Jail about football and he can teach me and you how to annoy people and wind up the forum for now good reason?

  • 21 NUFCPaul // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:28 PM

I can see Rafa bulking up the squad nearer the end of the transfer window, depending on how many we sign/sell.

  • 22 NUFCPaul // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:29 PM

With loan signings I meant, sorry.

  • 23 WWSBRD // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:29 PM

Dummett is terrible which is probably why hes on the bench and Sterry may have a future so giving him a chance might work out well

  • 24 Sazzer // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:29 PM

    Mr Funk
Those seem to be the best and most realistic we could get.

I would add Mitchell Dijks from Ajax.

Also Jordan Amavi from Villa even if it’s unlikely that they will let us have their best player.

I think Rafa likes the look of Sterry and to be honest the young lad has looked decent in the small cameos that I have seen of him! The boy loves a tackle !

Quite like the look of Hayden as well

  • 28 Shadow_Shearer // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:32 PM

I suppose we could have played gamez left back. But let rafa experiment with players, tactics & formations.

  • 29 NUFCPaul // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:32 PM

Shadow_Shearer – having the same CB pairing for as many games as possible is a good thing. It builds their partnership and understanding. Maybe they can be our Adams and Keown for the next few seasons? Although Hanley has to figure in there at some point too.

  • 30 Jail for Ashley // Jul 23, 2016 at 3:32 PM

    Munster,
He inherited a team not only short of confidence but without a will to live and a core of “star” players he’ll bent on taking us down. We faced the run away league leaders in the first game and the mackems who we’d not managed a goal against in six games. It’s like you’re almost blaming him for our relegation.

Sh1t we really do lack decent wingers Aarons is not good enough to be a starter and if Ritchie gets injured thats it, along with not having a decent skillful CM that can make things happen we are pretty short of the right players all over.

Colback,Tiote,Hayden,Saivet,Shelvey,Anita players that can’t burst forward with the ball I’d say we need at least with players going out another 5

  • 73 South_Wales_Geordie // Jul 23, 2016 at 4:03 PM

Is this a new role for Janmaat for this season? Definetly looked better going forward rather than defending last season. Rafa clearly thinks so too.

  • 74 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 23, 2016 at 4:04 PM

Newcastles defense improved last season when anita played at rb. Janmaat is so often out of position, he might as well be a winger. He might find it easier being the one who tracks back a bit to cover the FB, instead of actually BEING the FB

  • 75 firebug666 // Jul 23, 2016 at 4:05 PM

31′ – Great stop by Matz Sels. Marko Miric found himself with a clear sight of goal inside the box but the big Belgian keeps it out. #NUFC

  • 76 Tsunki // Jul 23, 2016 at 4:05 PM

Only problem being janmaat is,in fine nufc tradition, a poor crosser. His party piece is to cut inside which he does ok at. Woeful if he stalls near the corner, as he is a bit shoddy with the dead ball at his feet. Still, give him his chance I suppose.

I may well be mistaken but I’m sure Munster thought Pardew was a bang average manager who got too much abuse on here and that he’d been banging the Carr drum for ages now. 25M for Wijnaldum, 20M for Cabaye, nearly 18M for Tiote and 12M for Debuchy and possibly 20M for Sissoko. Shame about his fifth choice signing Riverie, free agent Marveaux and the U25 pair of Thauvin and Cabella.

I actually do think Pardew got the blame for too much on here. There were plenty of sticks to beat him with, without people twisting everything they could into pardews fault. Having said that, finishing 13th-15th every season (which we were settling into under percy) was not my idea of success.

    Nice work by Gayle.

My oldest son went all the way through highschool with Jack Hunter, who is playing CM today for the u21s. Can play DM too, apparently.

I really have been saying that Janmaat should be played as a winger for ages now tbh. I actually thought it was blindingly obvious! At least Rafa has the cajonas to try it out, despite it onlybeing a friendly 😛

Am not sure either of them have a future with us though mate. Its interesting Janmatt is playing there but more so that Sterry is getting a chance at RB imo could see him used in rotation for this coming season

Anita seems to be getting a game at LB which worries me as much as Dummett getting game time there. A fit Haidara or a new LB brought in is needed soon

Sterry has come from nowhere. I know he had a few cameo sub appearances at the back end of laSt season but I thought that was purely down to the amount of injuries we sustained.

I do not rate Dummett at all as a full back, for me he is CB back up at best. & with Haidara more fragile than paper, LB cover does worry me, although I do think Anita will make a neat little full back for this season only.

I think we are having Anita and Gamez as our FBs. Haidara and Mbabu r more fragile than paper or can do a good backup job. Its worrying though.
