The Sun on Sunday are reporting today that Newcastle are interested in Barnsley’s 22 year old 6ft 2ins center-back Alfie Mawson.

Mawson joined Brentford back in the summer of 2010 on a scholarship, having previously been part of Reading’s youth system and he eventually left Brentford for Barnsley last summer, when his contract was up.

Alfie Mawson – impressive young Barnsley defender

He was on loan for most of his time at Brentford at four different clubs – Maidenhead, Luton Town, Welling United and Wycombe Wanderers.

While on loan he played a total of 71 games but 50 of those appearances came in the 2014-2015 season at Wycombe Wanderers.

He had a great season at Wycombe and swept the board at the end-of-season awards ceremony by winning the Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards, the Wycombe Wanderers Supporters Association’s Player, Young Player and Away Travel Player of the Year awards.

We think he was Wycombe’s best player that season.

🙂

Since last summer Alfie has become a key player for Barnsley and helped them get promoted back to the Championship by beating Millwall 3-1 in the playoff final – and they also won the Johnstone Paints Trophy.

He made 45 League appearances and scored 6 goals last season for the Tykes and he joined them as a free agent last summer (2015) on a three-year deal.

Rafa Benitez may be bringing in another center-back this summer and it seems Mawson would be given the time to develop, since he has no Championship league experience yet.

He could be one for the future, as Rafa seems to be on the lookout for good young British players.

If Newcastle are indeed interested in the player, it’s because Rafa sees a player who can develop into  a Premier League defender for Newcastle.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.
