Newcastle Linked With Former Liverpool Midfielder

8:25 pm, Tuesday, July 26th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 99 Comments

Since Newcastle have to replace Gini Wijnaldum and probably also Moussa Sissoko this summer, we will be linked with a number of midfielders for the rest of the transfer window, which still has five weeks and one day to run.

talkSPORT is reporting today that Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in Wolves midfielder Conor Coady, who was signed last summer from Huddersfield for £2M, and he generally plays in defensive midfield.

conor coady wolves

Conor Coady – Wolves midfielder available

Last season the 23 year-old played 39 games for Wolves and he’s been capped at the England youth level from U-16 through U-20.

The report is that Wolves new owners – the Chinese conglomerate Fosun International – want to bring in some new players like Benfica’s 22 year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder Anderson Talisca for £20M, although Liverpool are also after the 6ft 3ins player.

It seems that Conor is available to leave Molineux this summer.

The two other clubs said to be interested in the 6ft 1ins tall midfielder are Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday.

Conor was born in St. Helens and is a Liverpool supporter and came through the Liverpool Academy.

He went on loan to Sheffield United for the 2013-2014 season and he played 50 games for the Blades with 6 goals in that season.

Conor finally left Liverpool in the summer of 2014 at age 21 and signed on for Championship side Huddersfield Town on a three-year deal for a fee believed to be around £500K and made his debut against Bournemouth that August.

Conor ended up playing 48 games with 3 goals and 3 assists before leaving the Terriers last summer for Wolves.

We think Rafa Benitez is on the lookout for good young players who he can bring on at Newcastle, maybe Conor will be one of them?

And with defensive midfielder Cheick Tiote being reported about to leave Newcastle for UAE Pro League club, Al Jazira, maybe Rafa is looking for a young replacement for Cheick?

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

What’s the crack with the periscope links. How do they work cos all I get is a black screen saying periscope ?

  • 2 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 26, 2016 at 8:28 PM

Also that team are going to be conned by Tiote ! 4 million a season he will play about 4 games and then start getting “injured” and be caught out with about 40 new wives……

    Shirebrook, it’s a mobile app

What a goal by Anita ! Who is playing on the right wing??

  • 9 Rafa Revolution // Jul 26, 2016 at 8:50 PM

    Anita scores hahaha

  • 10 Rafa Revolution // Jul 26, 2016 at 8:50 PM

    LCBP, Anita is right wing

  • 11 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 26, 2016 at 8:51 PM

    @Rafa

Yeah thats what I meant! Cant believe he is playing there! Fair play to the lad he just gets on with the job wherever he is asked to play

  • 12 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 26, 2016 at 8:52 PM

In the last two games, rafa has experimented with the right wing, and both players have scored. He cant seem to do wrong “-D

Just seen the strap at the bottom of the SSN screen, apparently Pogba has scored for Stenhousemuir tonight. Looks like he’s flipped the bird to Mourinho.

Whats wrong with Matt Ritchie? anyone

  • 18 SUTTY1978 // Jul 26, 2016 at 8:55 PM

YCMIU, he’s probably doing it to show chequebook Charnley that we are short of wingers, backfiring a bit isn’t it!

    Sutty

    Haha yeah could be.
Seriously, though,he just seems to know how to use his players. Anita actually has the atributes to play there imo. He is a good passer, quick and decent on the ball. Has a canny shot on him too when he feels like it.

  • 21 will die for the toon army // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:01 PM

I could switch Anita with Janmatt. Janmatt has poor positioning. Aninta is a better RB. I wld feel safer with Janmatt as RW

  • 22 GeordieTwo // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:01 PM

    Well done Anita.

  • 23 Rafa Revolution // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:02 PM

    Hanley coming on

  • 24 lukes26 // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:02 PM

i think Gamez stole Anita and Janmaats position & rafa’s giving them an opportunity

we need at least one more winger ..ayoze wont cut it there, even in the championship

  • 25 Bambams // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:03 PM

I have watched the match on that -periscope site….

It’s not ideal but fair play to the lad for offering live footage.

From what I have seen we are still bloody rubbish at corners !

  • 26 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:04 PM

    Lukes26

I think perez’s best position is centre of the three behind the striker,i think. Either there or as a second striker.

  • 27 will die for the toon army // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:05 PM

    lukes26

Ayoze is quality but there is something he lacks. He isnt a player to rely on. He can be a Wijnaldum, disappear when the tough gets going.

  • 28 Rafa Revolution // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:05 PM

Hanley on, Mbemba off, Sterry on, Janmaat off, Armstrong on, Aarons, Gayle off, Gouffran on and Colback for Hayden

    YouCouldn’tMakeItUp

agreed..its unfortunately a few other players best position too

  • 30 GeordieTwo // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:09 PM

Anita has proven his value to the club over and over again. His performances late last season at RB were excellent.

  • 32 SPRINGY // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:10 PM

i agree about perez, shoe horning him into a wing position is stunting his ability, jack of all trades master of none comes to mind…needs to be played in either of those positions or not at all if not good enough… i believe he is….just needs games to get used to one position….just my opinion like.

  • 33 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:11 PM

    Lukes

I think with gini gone and sissoko probably going, perez, sdj and arma are the only 3 that can truely play well there. Id say thauvin is more suited wide, like ritchie and aarons.

  • 34 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:12 PM

    Springy

Rafa seems to like him there, so fingers crossed he’ll get plenty of chances

  • 35 Toonces // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:13 PM

hope so,the lad has talent and skill but if he continues to get spread about the place,lw rw,st,2nd st..his game will go to pot, needs to pick a position and graft at the one position instead of just being happy to graft anywhere…..hopefully your right.

i’d like to see thauvin get some games tbh….lets have a good look at him against slightly less talented but more aggressive champ players and see how he does,he’s got talent,he showed it in small glimpses in the cup and especially the arsenal game….just needs to grow a pair and want to be succeed here….for a start.

Think this is going to be how it plays out in a lot of games this season teams are going to hold out and then we will power them in the 2nd half eventually playing some lovely stuff at times now!

  • 59 GeordieTwo // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:30 PM

Is Flavius a bit of a chancer? Possibly he needs a touch of the old fongbat….. Hmmm.

aye, a lot of teams will be up for our scalp and waste energy chasing everything and putting up a good show but hopefully that will weaken as the game goes on…the test will come if they score early then have something to fight and hang on for.

    LCBP

Rafa will set us up to win whilst also adapting the game plan to the oppositions strengths and weaknesses. At times we may play on the counter a bit but most of the time I think he will get us to try and control games. Watching us on periscope tonight, we play out from the back, occassionlaly from a GK we’ll kick it long, we have good build up play, get the overlaps going but the full backs don’t go gung Ho so that it leaves us exposed.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Shelvey as a no 10, then buy another winger, as he can be a bit lazy so would be ideal to play him in a kind of Gerrard role

  • 65 JamesToon // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:35 PM

Some teams will attack us, some teams may sit back, whatever happens, I’m fully confident Rafa will have done his homework and will have us prepared for anything. Looking forward to what will hopefully be an exciting season, hopefully see some team spirit and that connection between the fans and the club brought back to life

  • 68 Jail for Ashley // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:36 PM

    JT,
Don’t see the point of selling Tiote mind unless he’s another that’s made it clear he wants away.

  • 69 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:37 PM

I am glad our fringe players who have for too long simply made up the numbers are getting involved properly in pre season. They can’t all be permanently beyond usefulness. A few of them have served under some pretty dire times and have tried to stay professional. They me prove useful at times this season.

  • 70 GeordieTwo // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:37 PM

Ta Roshan mate. I am going to keep an eye on Flavius though.

  • 71 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:37 PM

Good to see Gouffran get a goal hes not the most talented but again he does give 100% and is pretty much willing to play in any position

Never really cost us anything in transfer fee either

  • 72 GeordieTwo // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:38 PM

What does this tell us about Riviere? Is he even travelling with the squad?

  • 73 Jail for Ashley // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:38 PM

    YC,
I think Gouff will grab 10 goals this season.

  • 74 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:40 PM

I still have high hopes for Darlow. I genuinely believe he will be our eventual first choice keeper. He seems hard to beat.

  • 75 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:40 PM

We actually have the best goalkeeper dilemma possible. All of them are good enough for this league. What order would you guys put them in?

  • 76 JamesToon // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:40 PM

I still hope both gouffran and riviere get moved on, but if rafa sees different, then i’ll back his decision!

  • 77 SPRINGY // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:41 PM

    lcbp
when goofy first signed, his work rate was his shining light, never looked like scoring many but looked a very willing grafter, but over the last season or 2 he lost that grafter shine so he didnt look like he had anything to offer…maybe he’s back to what he was….full of graft at least.

    isn’t rivie injured?

  • 80 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:43 PM

    Jail

I agree. Especially since rafa wont try to use him as a defensive winger. He’ll get his chances in this league.

  • 81 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:43 PM

    @Springy

He seemed to lose confidence when Cabaye was sold and then he eventually got shifted to playing left wing back a couple of games (think it was Man Utd away for one of them!) and then never really got back in !

There was a time where he was flying when he was on the left and we had Sissoko on the right with Remy in the middle so if Rafa can just get him back to that he will be handy in the championship !

Considering we seem to be losing a player every friendly we play we are going to need him to play a few times this season !!

  • 82 GeordieTwo // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:43 PM

Good to hear Rivi’s got some work Jail mate. And Nile cruises you say? That would be our old friend Nile Ranger? Where do the cruises go? Possibly up dead ends?

  • 83 JamesToon // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:44 PM

if he really wants to move on then thats fine, we’ve got Hayden whos looked solid in his kind of role, colback can also play there

  • 89 JamesToon // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:48 PM

What you certainly cant deny, is the players seem respond very well to Rafa’s team talks and instructions. Everyone seems to know their job/responsibility, when things arent going well in the first half, we always look better in the second half. Completely the opposite to previous managers i.e. McCardew who almost demotivated the players, we could just go in 1-0 down at half time and just capitulate in the second half and lose 3 or 4-0

  • 90 GeordieTwo // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:49 PM

Yes, Pardew nearly destroyed Gouffy as with so many others. Just played him out of position and beat him down. I can think of several others he did that to. Keep that in mind Palace as you go forward. Possibly we’ll be taking your place in a year or so?

  • 96 will die for the toon army // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:53 PM

Forget Pardew, Mcca was going to kill Goufran he would never return from that playing him CM position that was suicide.

  • 98 GeordieTwo // Jul 26, 2016 at 9:56 PM

I would start the season with Krul if he’s fit. Elliot will be awhile. Otherwise it’s between Darlow and Sels. Will Sels get the start against Vitesse? I think so.
