Newcastle Issue Club Statement On EFL Invitation

11:23 am, Wednesday, July 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

Newcastle United have today declined the invitation to participate this season in the new EFL Trophy for U-21 sides.

They say there were initially told that they would not be invited to participate in the competition and therefore have already made other plans – mainly on loaning players out – and therefore will decline the invitation to participate, at least for this season.

Here is the Newcastle statement:

Newcastle United can confirm it has declined an invitation to take part in the 2016/17 EFL Trophy.

The Club was initially informed by the Premier League that it was not going to be invited to compete in the restructured competition.

Accordingly, the Club started to make plans with regard to the development squad for the coming season.

These plans included the intention to loan out some of the players who are currently part of the under-23 squad, rather than allowing them to compete in the Premier League 2.

Changes to the loan system, which come into effect this season, mean all loans must now be completed on a window-to-window basis, with emergency and youth loans no longer permissible.

These regulations are a contributory factor to the Club’s decision.

Though Newcastle United did subsequently receive an invite to compete in the EFL Trophy, the Club feels their younger players would be better served by going out on loan and gaining experience over an extended period in a first team environment.

Although Newcastle United supports the principle of the competition’s new format, participating in the EFL Trophy is not something the Club wishes to do this season.

The EFL Trophy seems a good concept and will give the youngsters a lot more games to play in a season and should therefore help help in their development.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur as well as Newcastle have all rejected the chance to play U-21 teams in the EFL Trophy.

So it’s all the big and important clubs.

🙂

    Gouffran OUT!

No softening to players that have failed us and shown nothing for years because of a pre-season goal.

Ian Toon – interesting you interviewing Colback. Would have thought you being a budding football writer and all that you would have reported your interview in direct speech. I said this -he said that etc etc.

Looking forward to your next interview Rafa perhaps, Penfold or even Mr tubbs – exciting times.

    Hail,
That’s a bit unfair. Your description encompasses many first teamers.

In other words “we’ve got a championship to win and can’t spend valuable time and effort running the lads legs off for a paint company trophy ta.”

    Thauvin to Lazio

Only 2 wide players left and 1 unreliable with injuries until proves otherwise….

2 more needing to be recruited – think that is why Janmaat is being looked at for filling in..

Our intrepid interviewer strains at the barrier as the team slowly files into the coach for home…

    Ian – “Jack! Jack! Jack!….Jack!……..JACK!….JACK!……
    …………
    …JAAACCKKK! …”

Jack Colback (removing earbud and briefly catching Ian’s eye before continuing onto the coach, replacing earbud) – “hmmm.hmm.hmm….hmmmm”

Mr Tuff- I would refer you to an answer I have previously given:

Mr Tuff- I have responded previously. All my own material – I write/ submit for the Metro and others usually under the titled Sports Reporter banner. I don’t have a problem someone else posting under their name because it means they rate the content. I am using the leverage to get some work potentially from the London, Evening Standard. Hope this meets with your approval. Don’t worry it’s only a hobby
I have a desire to qualify in a very much more worthwhile field than becoming an old hack- I can’t keep up in the drinking stakes.

I wrote occasional articles for WSC when in my first year at Uni as an 18 year old. It helped towards my survival.

We’ve spoken before about people with agendas- I always look at who’s saying what and why they’re saying it.
