Rafa Benitez Praises Two Unlikely Newcastle Players

10:42 pm, Wednesday, July 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 6 Comments

Rafa Benitez talked to nufcTV today after the 2-0 win over Southend United last night and he has praised both Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran, our two unlikely goalscorers.

Rafa is particularly pleased with Vurnon Anita, who seems to be able to play anywhere for Newcastle and he’s a player that Rafa Benitez obviously trusts a lot.

This is what Rafa Benitez has said to nufcTV after the 2-0 win at Southend:

“When a team is well organised it is not easy to find the space. The first goal from Anita was something we are trying to do in training, regaining the ball after giving it away – and it was a great goal.”

“Then Gouffran scored another really good goal. Goals and clean sheet – but as I said the other day, still room for improvement.”

“Vurnon is a player who can play in almost every position, I don’t know if he can play as a striker, maybe as a target man, but we will try maybe one day.”

“He is very clever tactically – can play on the right, can play as a right-back, as a winger and a left full-back, as a midfielder – so he is quite intelligent tactically.”

“It is important to have players competing. Gouffran is a good professional, working hard, even when not playing.”

“Really pleased for him because when you have a player who knows maybe he won’t have too much time on the pitch and he keeps working, he deserves to score.”

“I think the team are improving every game but still far away from what we have to be. It has to be like this because if you are too good now then you might not have energy for the rest of the season.”

“It’s important to keep on improving and doing the things we want to see this season.”

Yoan Gouffran could be a very good squad player for us this season and maybe that’s the best way to see out the last year of his four year contract at Newcastle and he’s always worked very hard in training, as Rafa points out.

And ever since Rafa Benitez has arrived at Newcastle, Vurnon Anita has had a resurgence in his career and it will interesting to see if he starts against Fulham in our first league game and where he will play.

Vurnon also has one year left on his contract at Newcastle.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Has Will Grigg not signed yet….oh guess we have Gouffran on fire so he’s no longer needed!

Quite pleased that Phil Brown revealed that Rafa was after 4-5 more players.
I’m worried about the lack of an attacking midfielder and a striker – at a minimum.

One or two on here were suggesting no more buys/squad complete. Really no reality with some.
To guarentee top spot – more players are needed.

4 or 5 to replace a similar amount leaving. I’ve argued the squad is complete, but any outgoings will need to be replaced with like for like. If Arma goes on loan we’ll need a striker, for example, if Sissoko goes then an attacking central mid, Thauvin then a winger. The squad as is ok for depth and balance for mine, but it does look like there will be more activity, as certain players get there desired moves.

I don’t think we necessarily need another central DM if Tiote should leave though. Either a CB, LB, Winger or Striker depending on the best deal available, although as things stand we do have sufficient depth in all these positions for the Championship.

Winning it? I’m not sure extra bodies will help unless they are better than the first choices we already have. Which of course is not easy to achieve and will bite into money that will certainly be needed should we return as we are expected to.
