Report – Another High Profile Player To Leave Newcastle

12:36 pm, Wednesday, July 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 52 Comments

Corriere Dello Sport in Italy are reporting today that Florian Thauvin will move to Lazio on loan for next season, and that will happen once Antonio Candreva’s transfer is completed.

They report the loan contract will include a loan fee of  2M  and there will be an option to buy – and we also assume his wages will also be paid by the Rome-based club.

florian thauvin in ireland

Florian Thauvin – loan deal with option to make move permanent

The loan deal seems similar to that of Remy Cabella’s loan to Marseilles last season, when the transfer would become permanent when Florian plays a stated number of game for the Lazio first team.

The permanent deal could then be invoked and probably will be made permanent in January since we assume Florian will be a good addition to the Lazio team since he has played quite well in Newcastle’s pre-season.

The transfer fee is reported to be  €11M and that means if he does make the move permanent Newcastle will get €13M for him in total (including the loan fee), which is around £11M – so we got most of our money we paid to Marseille for him last August.

Given Florian had such a disastrous time of it last season at Newcastle, that seems like a good deal the Magpies have negotiated with Lazio – always assuming the Corriere Dello Sport  report is accurate.

This deal has been reported to be pending for a number of weeks now with the transfer of Antonio Candreva being the thing that has been holding things up – but it is now likely that Candreva will be moving to Inter-Milan.

Florian has always been reported as being the replacement for the 29 year-old Italian winger.

Florian was probably completely overwhelmed at Newcastle last season, given we started so badly and basically never recovered under the woeful Steve McClaren as head coach.

But the 23 year-old has done well to come back to Newcastle for pre-season and be the professional he has looked over the last four weeks.

It cannot have been easy for him, but he will also have known this deal was pending and very likely to happen.

At the start of the summer the high profile players who could leave Newcastle were Andros Townsend, Gini Wijnaldum, Florian Thauvin, Moussa Sissoko and Daryl Janmaat – and Rafa wanted to keep as many as possible.

If the Thauvin deal  goes through and then we sell Moussa Sissoko – as expected – that will be four of the five who have left the club this summer.

Wonder if Daryl will stay?

Thauvin made 13 appearance for Newcastle (unlucky for some) with one goal and three assists.

One final thought – if we sell Thauvin for £11M and Moussa for £35M we will have made £84M on four players – Townsend, Wijnaldum, Thauvin and Sissoko.

We have to replace them.

That will not be easy and at least the first two players – Townsend and Wijnaldum – were probably our best two players in terms of ability and class.

Comments welcome.

Mr Tuff- I would refer you to an answer I have previously given:

Mr Tuff- I have responded previously. All my own material – I write/ submit for the Metro and others usually under the titled Sports Reporter banner. I don’t have a problem someone else posting under their name because it means they rate the content. I am using the leverage to get some work potentially from the London, Evening Standard. Hope this meets with your approval. Don’t worry it’s only a hobby
I have a desire to qualify in a very much more worthwhile field than becoming an old hack- I can’t keep up in the drinking stakes.

I wrote occasional articles for WSC when in my first year at Uni as an 18 year old. It helped towards my survival.

We’ve spoken before about people with agendas- I always look at who’s saying what and why they’re saying it.

I don’t know why people fall for it and me especially. Ian Toon will take great delight in watching the blog degenerate in to farce. He makes a rare appearance to say how good the blog is, hinting because a certain person isn’t here ‘for whatever reason’.
HWA, we’re agreeing on a lot these days!

WHile Newcastle have brought in promising new players, the outgoing ones have left the club weaker. Seeing Anita playing on the right mid made me wonder if Rafa had him do it so he would learn to be more attack minded, or if he is going to be one of the wingers. NUFC looking more solid at the back, but the mid field seems to be in flux.

  • 8 SPRINGY // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:04 PM

rafa may well just be testing the water as it were….he played janmaat there last game then anita this game, with sterry mbabu, janmaat, anita and possibly mbemba we seem to have an abundance of right sided players/rb’s,so converting one into a right winger or wing back/right midfielder as cover for ritchie maybe a thought of rafas.

  • 9 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:04 PM

Isnt zog training at the mackems? I am sure he turned out for a freindly for them too. He might end up there.

  • 10 SPRINGY // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:06 PM

aye he is but and they will probs give him a year contract so they dont have to buy another player…keep there coin as the skint…ish.

  • 11 martoon // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:08 PM

I’m getting a little concerned now seeing all these players leave – I thought a couple might be persuaded to stay. We surely have to bring in some replacements but I ‘m sure Rafa knows this. I’m actually starting to wonder whether part of Rafa’s brief was to reduce the wage bill in return for a transfer budget?

  • 12 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:08 PM

They are really struggling to sign players. Thier owner has them in a financial mess.

They now know how we feel when a player cant be brought “over the line” 😀

  • 13 SPRINGY // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:11 PM

aye they seem to be struggling,i expect them to sign someone but them and hull right now look like they could struggle.

  • 14 Jail for Ashley // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:12 PM

    Bee Guy,
I don’t think there are many relegated clubs in the history of the game that have appeared stronger on paper. We do need an incoming for every outgoing now though.

  • 15 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:12 PM

From the list of gone/likely to go, i would say obertan, marveaux, cabella and thauvin played so little part, that we wont have to replace all of them. I think One player would make up for those four. Just my opinion on it, but i think if we signed a wide player, a creative player and a left back, and possibly a-n-other, we would be more than covered until jan. I actually think we could get away with just a winger and a left back for now.

  • 16 Ron Knee // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:14 PM

    Good old Chronic:-

“If Thauvin and Tiote go, that would leave Newcastle with the following midfield options:

    Jonjo Shelvey
    Matt Ritchie
    Isaac Hayden
    Cheick Tiote
    Vurnon Anita, etc.”

  • 17 expatmag // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:14 PM

Was just thinking that myself. Experience and quality seems to be dropping and whilst there appears to be a vast savings on salaries, the squad us starting to look a little thin on the ground for a 46 game season plus cup matches

  • 18 SPRINGY // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:15 PM

    The other one, Mark Douglas!

  • 21 SPRINGY // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:20 PM

ah ryt…forgot there was 2 to choose from!lol

  • 22 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:20 PM

Rb – Gamez, Janmaat. (Anita hayden)
Cb – mbemba, lascelles, hanley (dummet)
    Lb – NewLB, haidara (dummet)
Cm – shelvey, hayden, anita, colback
Rm – ritchie, goofy, (anita janmaat)
Lm – aarons, newLM, (one of the rms)
    AM – Perez, SDJ (arma)
    St – Mitro, Gayle (arma)

  • 23 SPRINGY // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:22 PM

    forgot about gamez before…whoops!

  • 24 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:22 PM

I agree. And if we get a couple of injuries we will be back to square pegs in round holes. I think Januarys window is going to be as important as this one.

  • 25 martoon // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:23 PM

expatmag @17 – I agree 100%. While our first pick team is decent enough – a few injuries and we are starting to look a bit lightweight.

  • 26 SPRINGY // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:24 PM

be interesting first team selection against fulham…i expect the usual 4-2-3-1,but who plays where and if we have any new signings will very interesting….we may get some kind of idea this weekend.

  • 27 martoon // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:25 PM

YMCIU – are you looking at my screen? 🙂

  • 28 ToonRich // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:25 PM

    YCMIU, dont forget;
    rb – Sterry / Mbabu
lb – Mbabu can cover there too!
    cb – Findlay?
    wing – Callum Roberts

Although I probably only include Sterry and Mbabu in first team fixtures, and the other two perhaps in the cups.

I still like to see new LB, AM C/L, ST

  • 29 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:26 PM

I wonder whats going to happen to the likes of Sameobi and Vukic. This league is probably thier level, so they might find themselves getting games in the first half of the season. Maybe they are the plan until Jan?

  • 30 Our Toon // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:26 PM

I’ve been saying the same thing for weeks, we have youngsters and made some decent signings but very thin in terms of numbers in the squad. I’m quite concerned at the current plight of it, letting Thauvin go out on loan for the sake of 2m euros is the craziest of the lot. Even with tiote, had 1 year left keep him get promoted and he can leave on a free…..promotion is worth much more.

You’ll get the usual spouted around that trust in Rafa stuff…..these players need to gel and it’s better to do it pretty season rather than during the season.

Add sissoko and possibly Krul to go yet and the squad looks utter shite for such a gruelling campaign of 2 games a week

  • 31 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:27 PM

    Toon rich

Yeah i forgot about sterry and mbabu, both who have had first team football.

  • 32 SPRINGY // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:28 PM

would say a minimum of a left winger is needed if there were only to be one signing but i expect 4-5 before the window shuts with 2-3 going permanent then a 4-5 loans.

  • 33 Our Toon // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:29 PM

    Toon rich

Mbabu needs to concentrate on his fitness same with Aaron’s, SDJ another sick note. Worrying times as those 3 are constantly injured

  • 34 giimps // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:29 PM

They maybe think there are 2 tiotes, don’t tell Ashley that though, he’d have them both sold , one to UAE and one to China

  • 35 expatmag // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:30 PM

The likes of Bigi and Saviet and Riviere have been missed off the lists above too

  • 36 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:39 PM

Ah yes. Saviet should probably get games too. We dont really know what he can do yet. Not sure if bigi will feature. Seems to have faded. Rivvy might as well be left off every list 😀

  • 37 Oleg G // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:40 PM

We had a thin squad last year (and we had it for some time now).

As it looks right now, Tiote, Tauvin and Sissoko will leave the club as well.

We have sold\released 6 players from our squad (Saylor, Colo, Gini, Remy C, Cisse) and brought in 6 other players.

If no more surprises, we will have 9-10 players who will be gone in total by the end of the window.

Even if we will bring another 3-4 players, that will be just to replace the ones we’ve lost. So our squad will continue in its previous “thin” state?

Right now we aren’t even seem to be after 3-4 players. Barely a pair.

How is this going to work?

  • 38 ToonRich // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:41 PM

Our Toon, I agree with that…anyone know if Mbabu’s injury is a re-occuring one or has it been a new injury each time hes been laid up?
Both he and Aarons are starting to get game time under their belts so hopefully they’re over whatever it is thats hampered them! SDJ, not too sure about his overall fitness, seems to be one thing after another with him!

expatmag, do you think Bigi and Riv would cut it, even at this level?
I liked the look of Saviet at doncaster, but cant really base an opinion on 1 second half performance in a pre season!!

  • 39 El Sleeve // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:49 PM

seems a lot of the departing foreign lads are getting replaced by young British talent, which is never a bad thing

Only worry is the numbers that are leaving, unless Sterry and Armstrong are gonna make the step up, we need some more signings.

Pritchard, Charlie Taylor and another winger wouldn’t go amiss.

Can’t really wait to see the back of Sissoko and the inevitable sulk that will come from him after sitting on the subs bench for 6 months

  • 40 expatmag // Jul 27, 2016 at 1:53 PM

I think Riviere has been very unfortunate, firstly with injuries but importantly, being played out if position as a centre forward.

He may well be the winger option we are looking for as thus is his best position.

  • 41 expatmag // Jul 27, 2016 at 2:00 PM

It certainly seems that way and long nay it last too. I would love to see the likes of Hughes Taylor Trippier etc at the Toon.

So far, we have lost 9 players from last seasons squad with the liklihood 4 more to go.

    We have signed 6 players.

Several players have returned from loans including Armstrong Ameobi Vuckic Satka.

Sterry seems to have been promoted to the senior squad from the academy and Curtis Good nade his long awaited return ftom injury last week.

  • 42 ToonRich // Jul 27, 2016 at 2:02 PM

Just read (source; Daily mail)…Barca considering Perez as backup to their strike trio :/
Would Ayoze leave to play backup? Probably quite hard to turn down Barca though, he’d get game time in the cup, maybe some champs league matches or league games following CL…

Riverie was unfortunate that Cleopatra was made in the early sixties. Had he have been around then he would have found his true vocation in life as a stunt double to that slave who fell off the ramp while heaving rocks, his ability to fall over would not have gone unissued.

  • 47 Wayayman // Jul 27, 2016 at 2:22 PM

I was at the match last night wih my 13yr old son. After the game we stood by the coach waiting for the players along with 5 or 6 others. The majority of other fans were at the door where the players were leaving the stadium. There was definitely one adult chatting to the players as they got on the bus. Could have been Ian Toon? Who knows?
Darlow, Colback, Aarons, Arma, Gayle, Saivet and Anita all stopped for pics and autographs. Mitro did a couple and then marched with a look of thunder on his face to the bus. Lascelles jogged to the bus ignoring everyone.
So funny with Rafa though, it got a bit excited when we knew he was coming through, one bloke reached across the fans and stroked Rafa’s head like he was a deity or something. My lad video’d it, very funny.

Aaanyway, great atmosphere last night. Hard to judge tactically anything in these games but we did change tactics a few times even in the first half. Shelvey was always looking for Gayle who was trying to play on the shoulder of the last defender and but for better delivery would have been in at least 3 times in the first half.
We seem to have a problem on the left… Who knew?!? Dummet was left with 1 on 1 when in possession and failed to take their fullback on each time. Aarons for some reason was coming infield rather than making an earlier run down the wing so Dummy could pass. Aarons did nothing to show he’s ready to start.

Hayden is a very tidy player, likes a tackle and can pass well. Other than that, watching the warm ups was interesting, especially Darlow and Sels passing 60-70 yarders to each other. Sels was pinging in right to Darlow’s feet every single time.

  • 48 Wayayman // Jul 27, 2016 at 2:22 PM

Jeez, that went on a bit, sorry ’bout that!

  • 49 Essex Geordie Bill // Jul 27, 2016 at 2:43 PM

Just want to ramble on a bit about last nights game at Southend.

I was in the opposite end to the Toon supporters behind the goal and had a great view of the game.
I was sat beside my mate who is a big bloke and a SUFC supporter who was even bigger so felt like a filling in a sandwich. The stadium is old and in my mates words really grim with very little leg room between the seats, but wasn’t too bad overall.

I thought it was a good hard fought game and SUFC were a typical lower league team with good organisation and plenty of fight,. so didn’t make it easy for us which will probably be similar to many of our games this season.

They had one player called A Trialist who seemed to be on and off the pitch for most of the game and I recko they must have used every player on their books during the game.

The MOM award went to one of their players who must have been selected by his dad.
The real MOM was Jonjo who covered every blade of grass in the game and was in no way like some the descriptions I’ve seen of him in this blog, he was positive, hard working and his passing and ball control was first class, very few uber passes attempted. Had this been a home game he would have been applauded off the pitch, I predict that if he continues in the same vein he will be a Tyneside hero this season and be playing for England.

Lascelles ran him close and as my mate observed SUFC won next to nowt in the air, the whole back line were good and solid its going to be hard for teams to score against us with high long hopeful balls, our big weakness in the past.

Dummet was good and both of the goals were well taken, Goufron on this showing could be the surprise of the season.

Gayle for me was very disappointing and didn’t really show.

Hanley looked like another good big-un.

The game could have ended 3-1 or 4-1 one as Darlow pulled off a great save in the dying minutes and their goalie had a great game.

I can’t see why Rafa was disappointed as SUFC defended doggedly and weren’t easy to break down all in all I think it was a good result.

Oh and by the way the Toon supporters were great and in fine voice and could someone tell me what they were singing?
Anyway that’s me done for a few more moths.

    Back to work

  • 50 Slank // Jul 27, 2016 at 2:58 PM

    Expatmag @ 41

The 9 players you quote who are out of the door were not all regular starters. Marveaux, Obertan, Cabella and Thauvin hardly played at all, if at all. Townsend only played for half the season. Cisse was injured for a good stretch. Colo and Taylor were out injured for quite a few games which just as well as perhaps Lascelles would have never risen to the challenge. Only Wijnaldum was a regular.

Of the others possibly to depart (Sissoko,Tiote, Krul,Vukic) only Sissoko was a regular. Tiote was out injured for a prolonged period as was Krul and I don’t think Vukic played at all.

With the exception of Wijnaldum, Sissoko and possibly Townsend the club appears to be getting rid of players who didn’t feature much, if at all, and don’t have a future playing career at the club.

But as you say we still need to buy some more players even though players like Sterry have risen to the first team and hopefully more to join him from the ranks.

It will be interesting to see if all the new boys become regular starters.
