Newcastle United will only sell their players this summer if they get very close to their valuation of them and yesterday it was reported we had turned down bids for both Cheick Tiote and Florian Thauvin, because the bids were too low.
The clubs after the players were Al Jazira for Tiote and Rome club Lazio for Thauvin.
Cheick Tiote – Newcastle turned down paltry Al Jazira offer
There is a report in United Arab Emirates daily the National today, that Al Jazira’s offer for Tiote was for £800K, which is way below Newcastle’s valuation of the player.
Tiote almost moved to the Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua last January for a fee of £6M and the news in the National is that Newcastle now want a minimum of £4M for Tiote.
The National is strangely also reporting the clubs are not too far away in terms of the their valuation of Tiote, but they could have fooled us.
Another problem with the potential transfer is that Al Jazira currently have six foreign players on their books, following the signing of Mbark Boussoufa on Wednesday.
Only four foreign players are allowed in the Arabian Gulf League and Al Jazira must offload a number of their current foreign players, so they can sign the experienced Newcastle midfielder.
Cheick Tiote could still leave Newcastle this summer and he is also on high wages on Tyneside, and we suppose he could still join Al Jazira, but they will need to raise their offer substantially.
The player is back in training on Tyneside and Rafa Benitez would still be prepared to use Cheick next season as part of the squad for our promotion push out of the Championship.

Comment #1If £800k is not to far away from our valuation then you would expect our valuation to be something like £1.5m/£2m, I know that he is in the last year of his contract but a fee like that means that there is a bargain to be had from some lucky club, mind I don’t begrudge him a last big payday as for me he has been a great servant to us.

Comment #3Promotion rivals might not like to sell to their rivals, but clearly money talks in this game and Knockeart could be the missing link in the squad. He’s exactly what we need and a big enough offer will do the job. 24 years old is nowt age wise, but it’s like he’s always been around. We need a player to unlock stubborn defences when the bus has been parked and he can do it. Go back with 10-15m offer and see how strong they really are. Everybody and their brother has been illegally tapping up our players, maybe we should get inside his head. 😉

Comment #4A club could sign Tiote for free on a pre contract in Jan. That being the case, i think he will stay for the season and leave next summer.

Comment #5Give the guy another year’s contract.
They haven’t got too many like Cheick in the championship, and who knows, we might get another of his collector’s item goals.

Comment #6Why sell him? Exactly the type of player needed for this league.

Not sure there has been any illeagal tapping up. I think it’s just been lazy journos saying ” X is talking to Y, and Z could be part of the deal” but with no real evidence.
That being said, I agree we should go in with a big offer and watch the brighton owners eyes light up with pound signs 😀
