New Arrival Had To Pinch Himself When He Saw St. James’ Park

2:32 pm, Saturday, July 30th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 66 Comments

Grant Hanley has talked today in the match program about how great it will be to play at St. James’ Park in front of Newcastle’s legendary fans.

Well, he will get the chance today against SBV Vitesse because Chancel Mbemba has picked up a slight ankle injury in training and is being rested as a precaution, so Grant will be partnering captain Jamaal Lascelles at the back.

Chancel is expected to be fit for the first game of the season next Friday night at Craven Cottage.

This is what Grant has said today:

“I can’t wait to play there as a home player.”

“I knew Newcastle was a massive club but when I go there to sign I went to the stadium and I really had to pinch myself.” “It was surreal.”

“It’s not every day you get a chance to come to play for a club like this in front of these fans, who everybody knows just how passionate they are.”

“It really took a while to sink in and I am really looking forward to it now.” “I have spent the first week trying to settle in, get into training and get to know the lads.”

“But to finally get out there on the pitch was brilliant.”

“Coming off the bench is always tough, especially the first 10 minutes, but once you get a second wind you are normally all right.”

Grant is not exactly match fit so it will be interesting how he plays today and for how long, but we’d be surprised if he plays the full game.

Here’s the St. James’ Park stadium today – and the sun is now out.

Comments welcome.

Is Jamaal Lascelles the permanent captain?

  • 2 Bambams // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:41 PM

Our stadium is magnificent, I just wish we could extend the Gallowgate as was once planned. To have the stadium complete would make it unbelievable.

Keep hearing snippets that it can still be extended, Ash has planned a casino and shopping centre – but this won’t prevent further development.

One day it might be complete, hope I get to see it.

Back to footy….I am gutted Aarons is not starting. Hope this lad can stay injury free this season

has some1 got link for periscope pleaase

  • 4 Oleg G // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:45 PM

    ANY LINKS?!?

There was one link which was posted today and yesterday, but there is no indication that it actually works (pressing play bring a pop up screen and nothing changes on the video player itself) and that it is actually the link to our game.

    Any others?

  • 5 Ron Knee // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:45 PM

    Marvelous Nakamba – great name!

  • 6 Mister Tuff // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:47 PM

Attack looks a bit lightweight. Hope I’m wrong.

  • 7 expatmag // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:48 PM

    TUFF

Agreed. Line up looks overly defensive to me. Lack of pace evhdent

Just about to give it a go

    TODAYS MATCH.

This link should work for today’s match (thanks to Jib for posting the link yesterday):

    http://eredivisie-stream.net/live/vitesse-live-stream/channel-1/

I tested it yesterday evening during an Everton friendly and it worked very well and was HD quality. At first you are asked if you want to watch the match … hit the cancel button otherwise you get sent to a registration page – I found you don’t need to register to view the game. You get invited to register elsewhere but I ignored the request and closed the pop-up, then scrolled down to the bottom of the page to view the game. Initially a small dialog box appears over the viewing window but you can let it time out (a few seconds) or close it and view the match. Oh, and there was a radio commentary elsewhere on the page for those who just want to listen.

I hope this helpful. I hope it works today!

  • 9 davetoon // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:50 PM

it doesnt list the match on the site

  • 10 Nufc-83 // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:50 PM

How can you have links to the game when it’s not being shown on any tv channel? As already said you could get a periscope link if someone in the crowd was kind enough to film it.

  • 11 davetoon // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:52 PM

    that explains it then

  • 12 Essex Geordie Bill // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:53 PM

    Yeah just found that out.

  • 13 Mister Tuff // Jul 30, 2016 at 2:54 PM

expat – certainly does not look threatening at all – don’t think it will put the fear into any defences.

  • 14 expatmag // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:01 PM

    TUFF

However when you include the likes of Mitrovic Aarons De Jong and hopefully a couple if pacy goalscoring attackers, we should be ok

  • 15 Essex Geordie Bill // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:02 PM

According to that site Vitesse are playing Willem Two

  • 16 Nufc-83 // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:03 PM

Sorry the link on channel 3 actually works good start so far from Ritchie.

  • 17 Bambams // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:04 PM

Thought there would be a bigger crowd.
Just watched a little on periscope and doesn’t look like that many there.

  • 29 Nufc-83 // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:13 PM

I was trying to catch a few gullible suckers again as I said not being streamed but it is on Periscope which is how I seen the save. It’s poor though and I can’t be bothered watching it

  • 30 Nufc-83 // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:14 PM

Looks like the periscope link gone now anyway.

  • 31 expatmag // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:17 PM

15 mins gone and what seems glaringly obvious is the kack of creativity in our midfield…….according to the chronicle

  • 32 Ron Knee // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:19 PM

Matt Ritchie is trying to get crosses into the box at every opportunity. Exactly why Rafa signed him. Really added something to #nufc side

  • 33 Very Terry // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:20 PM

    Hi guys,

Here’s a periscope link. Not great, but better than nothing!

    Ritchie 🙂

  • 39 Laurent Robert 32 // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:31 PM

I’ll be turning the sound off now I think 😀

  • 40 Hail Wor Ashley // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:31 PM

Like the partisan uncensored commentary that comes with Periscope. Sunderland fans being called thick, ugly cnuts whilst watching the match – lovely!

  • 41 Hail Wor Ashley // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:34 PM

Ah damn, turned it sideways now to cater to those using mobiles.

  • 42 Yo-yo // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:34 PM

If Anita is genuinely on the RW today then it looks like Rafa has him marked down as our main utility player. If he and Janmatt are both able to cover RB and RW and be genuinely threatening in both roles then it adds to Rafa’s options in changing formations during the match

  • 43 Essex Geordie Bill // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:37 PM

    Hail

Yeah wondered why the game was sideways! 🙂

  • 44 Jail for Ashley // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:39 PM

    Totally dominating this like

  • 45 Ron Knee // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:39 PM

    Goal for Gayle.

  • 46 Rafa Revolution // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:39 PM

    Gayle whoop whoop

  • 47 Laurent Robert 32 // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:40 PM

laptop is currently sideways like a book…

  • 48 Rotonda heights // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:41 PM

Didn’t some sad t–t try and wind up everyone last match over links. Not funny, not clever…suggest someone needs to get a life.

  • 49 Ron Knee // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:41 PM

    The first goal:-

Getting a stiff neck and can’t make out the players anyway although it looks like we just scored a second, haven’t a clue who it was A bit of commentary would help.

  • 51 JP...from The Rock // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:43 PM

How the hell are you guys watching the match?? I can’t find anything on Periscope. What do I search for??

  • 52 Rafa Revolution // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:44 PM

    Colback!!!!

  • 53 Ron Knee // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:44 PM

    41′ – GOAL! Newcastle United 3-0 Vitesse (Colback) #NUFC

I think we’ll face a sterner test on Friday!

  • 54 will die for the toon army // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:44 PM

Guys I am very impressed with our defence looks so composed.

Only 2 goals in Pre-season. Thats amazing.

We have enough attackers jst injury prone from De Jong to Rivere To Aarons.

  • 55 Essex Geordie Bill // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:44 PM

Rotonda, looks like I fell for it as I re-posted the link, ah well it might have worked and the site does exist, just not showing our game.

  • 56 Laurent Robert 32 // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:45 PM

Rotonda, I agree. Sad, especially on match day.

I can assure you it’s much better winding idiots like you up rotunda who start clicking YouTube links for live feeds than being stressed out over the fact that I can’t see the match.

  • 60 JP...from The Rock // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:49 PM

Laurent Robert 32- Ahh shite oh well thanks for the heads up.

  • 61 Nufc-83 // Jul 30, 2016 at 3:49 PM

or you could contribute to a Newcastle United online community who generally try to help each other out, NUFC-83.

Colbacks is a nice goal, lovely footwork and clipped a little dinked cross over for Colback to head in.
Great work again from Perez on the Gayle goal
