I’m pleased with the on-going clear-out and am looking forward to further signings in the coming days and weeks.

On Haidara, he can’t be faulted for energy and commitment, but I do find he’s lacking in basic skills.

  • 2 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:11 AM

    Ron,
He also has to stay fit!

  • 3 SPRINGY // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:12 AM

    sutty from previous
regarding mbabu at lb,i think rafa is either trying to get players playing in there more natural position…as in mbabu is a right back so been playing him right back…or he cant trrust him to play enough games with his injuries,he did great at left back,we all seen that but square pegs round holes comes to mind and rafa doe’snt seem to be happy to do that unless its required…would love to see what mbabu can do at right back tbh.

  • 4 Ron Knee // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:13 AM

    Lilongwe

    That would help too!

  • 5 jazzyp // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:13 AM

According to the Mag.. Thauvin has a medical pencilled in at Lazio ,And Mr T deal looks to be on his way as United are close to agreeing a deal for him

  • 6 SPRINGY // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:16 AM

    ron
haidara has’nt really had a good run of games to get his sharpness and fitness back,as well as his confidence…players can be fit enough to play but sharpness and confidence takes a good few more games after lengthy injuries…he may surprise you if he gets the games….then again he just may not be good enough.

  • 7 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:17 AM

    Jazzy,
Tiote to which United? Or Newcastle United are close to agreeing a deal?

Shame to lose Tiote, but if he isn’t motivated or wanting to stay and fight then he isn’t worth keeping.

  • 8 Ron Knee // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:17 AM

    SPRINGY

    I suspect the latter!

  • 9 toontaff2 // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:18 AM

Jesus had a nightmare! Gouffran was looking lost. Otherwise the rest played well, especially Hayden and Ritchie.
Dummett is an excellent defender and covered for Jesus getting tuned by their right winger. Put in a few crunching tackles. He is not great going forward, but is so much more reliable than Janmaat as a defender. And a Welsh International to boot – Taffy Dummett!

These were my thoughts assessment on what I saw yesterday….
    Just got in from match

cruising first half two sloppy goals second half – defence a worry!!!!!

Man of the Match Anita for me by a mile
    Nathan for them…

    My assessment:

Sels: jury’s out shouts at defence which I like but shaky at corners high balls into the six yard box
Dummet – shaky start but grew into game looked better when went centre half.
Lascalles – class act going to get better
Hanley – first impression OK – but looks slow on the ball and likes to hit it long
Janmaat – Same old same old – great going forward defending not the best

Richie – looks a good buy – always the outlet ball wants the ball good crosser
Anita – Absolute outstanding today – some of his passes were superb –
Colback – same old gets the ball and passes but again to much fouling and niggling opposition for me
Hayden – class act going to be a another good asset
Gayle – boy is he quick always on the move – going to catch keepers out with his pressing, not bad in the air and took his goal well.
Perez – tried but looked a little boy lost.

    subs:
Saviet – did ok would keep
    Gamez – absolute TOSH
Sterry – looks a good player in the making
Gouffran – Did well but oops missed a chance to score (missed the ball)
Aarons – to many tricks for me with no end product
Armstrong – sorry lads – ain’t ready yet needs to go out on loan again not sure if he is going to make it – hope I;m wrong
Shelley – nowt special – lost a lot of weight
Mitro – same old Mitro annoying sod – to the opposition

    think thats everyone

  • 13 Ron Knee // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:22 AM

    Conflicting reports on Gamez:-

“He was willing to attack with purpose when called upon, and his calming influence helped settle United down.” (The Chronic)
Compare that with what Charlie reported yesterday!

  • 14 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:23 AM

I wouldn’t mind us going after Kieran Tierney of Celtic. Young very talented left back who had his breakthrough last year, and also got a national team call up.

haidara like sdj, good…it may be a make or break season for them…these are the most injury prone players we have and at some stage the club may cut there losses, accept a daft bid or cancel there contracts to let them start again elsewhere….haidara not due back till end of august, not sure about sdj,but think good has played a couple of under 21 games.

  • 18 SPRINGY // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:26 AM

haidara due back 27th of august according to physio room.

  • 19 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:28 AM

    Springy,
End of August? Will be interesting to see if he gets a chance once back. Dummet and Gamez are going to be ahead of him at that stage, unless we lose Janmaat and Gamez moves to the right.

  • 20 Fostino // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:29 AM

    Jazzy

I think gayle has enough ability to get us close to 20 goals next year. That might warrant getting the no.9 jersey the way carroll did and he has scored goals in the Pl. The ha trick against liversion a few years ago springs to mind. It’s a good signing. He’s a good finisher who will make lots of runs. He can compliment good passers in midfield and a big man like mitro up front. Is he another Vardy? He could well be. A lot of similarities in many ways and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s getting an England call up in the next 3 years.

I just hope whoever fills the no.9 jersey next does so like shearer did and not like the likes of cisse…Martins etc.

i think rafa prefers players to play there natural position if they are good enough,so if haidara can get fit, stay fit and is good enough he may get the nod over gamez, dont no about dummett…not sure what rafa sees him as a left back or cb.

Nufc close to selling him mate, Shame but Hayden looks more than good enough to cover that position

  • 27 jazzyp // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:38 AM

    Springy

According to a lot of outlets, Nufc are on the verge of ridding themselves of at least 3 players. So one would hope they will at least be replaced.
If not then I personally will see the team weaker than last season

  • 28 Ian Toon // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:38 AM

Fostino- Andy Robertson from Hull to solve the left back problem. Hull have turned down a £ 7 million bid from West Ham and L’pool are said to be interested. He was outstanding in play off games and apparently outstanding whilst at Dundee U. He’s PL quality and we would then have more than a quarter of our starting eleven in the Scotland National side.

  • 29 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:39 AM

    Charlie,
You mentioned Kodjia in you list I think. He had a great season last year at Bristol City who were struggling all season. He is an odd one though, 26 and has only really had 2 decent seasons in his career, one of which was in Ligue 2. Not sure I’d want him, despite last season.

  • 30 SPRINGY // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:41 AM

i think there may more signings before the window closes just maybe a couple this week, tiote, thauvin and sissoko are probably gone this week….or possibly gone.

  • 31 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:43 AM

    Ian,
Yeah, I’ve been recommending Robertson as a signing for us since before he joined Hull. Strong in the tackle, quick and also has a fantastic delivery. I think if he leaves Hull there will be plenty of clubs interested in him.

I think Kieran Tierney will be better in the future, and would be a great signing long term.

  • 32 SPRINGY // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:45 AM

    ian toon
out of the lb mentioned if it were my choice i would like robertson but think he has premier league teams willing to pay him big bucks…but if we dont try we’ll never know…he does have a lot more chance of playing here.

  • 33 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:45 AM

    Springy,
Yeah, I agree that Rafa is more likely to want players in their right position – most managers do I’d imagine. I just find Gamez an odd signing if he wasn’t signed to be pushing for the left back role, unless Rafa was fairly certain Janmaat would be gone.

  • 34 toontaff2 // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:50 AM

I went in the Platinum Club, same price, just to see how the other half live! Team Valley Brush Company seat! In Gallowgate for season – thank god! Maybe the chronic reporter was with the majority in the Platinum, in the bar, or on the mobile!

  • 35 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:51 AM

    Lil/springy
They are the top four strikers from last year who are still/will be playing in the Championship this season.
Lil as for Kodjia had many people heard of the last centre forward we signed from Bristol City and looked what he did for us.

    … Andy Cole

  • 36 Fostino // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:54 AM

    Ian toon

Out of all the lb suggestions, I would favour this lad the most too. Maybe the attraction for him might be the assurance of regular playing time, playing for a big club, being close to his home in Scotland and of course rafa. If I was Robertson I would do it.

Very true..reckon il be secretly cheering Scotland on in future

  • 37 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:56 AM

    Assomabalonga record at Forest

Not bad but sustained a serious knee injury just came back at the end of last season
    Championship 29 15 1 0 2 0 — 32 15
    2015–16[40]
    Championship 4 1 0 0 0 0 — 4 1

  • 38 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:57 AM

    Charlie,
Cole was a good deal younger though did well in his first full season before joining us. Kodjia isn’t quite the same. I wouldn’t be signing a striker from Blackburn just cause Shearer did well!!

There are 2 Bristol City fans here in Malawi, and they raved about him, but he has only managed double figures twice in his career, one of those in Ligue 2.

  • 39 SPRINGY // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:58 AM

    lilongwe
i think your right about gamez,he probably was brought in with the idea janmaat was on his bike, but the his age and contract size would imply to me that he’s basically a stop gap to cover all basis….rb,cb,lb,utility player as it were.

  • 40 toontaff2 // Jul 31, 2016 at 10:59 AM

Very quiet – no singing, swearing or shouting!
Agree with Charlie on most players – Arma was disappointing, but injury lay off explains that – Jesus missed tackles, missed passes and looked ropey – Gouff made some dreadful touches just in front of Rafa.
Really enjoyed Ritchie and thought Gayle was very quick if small for a centre forward – he will cause defences problems. Mitro was standing offside too often and needs to watch his elbows! Thought Hayden was MoM, closely followed by Big Vurn and Ritchie.

  • 41 Ron Knee // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:03 AM

So all our new signings look good, apart from Gamez.

  • 42 Ian Toon // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:04 AM

Springy- Given that were likely to be getting big bucks for Moussa i think we should push the boat out for Robertson and a few others of proven quality now. He is PL class and it might turn out cheaper in the long run to bring in someone of his quality now he is worth the investment to help secure promotion.
Reportedly were working under the proviso of being a PL club in all but name. ” Whatever Rafa wants, Rafa gets”. We’re a club run by a top draw football man not an accountant; an highly ambitious manager, rather than a bean counter reliant on Ashley’s support. Mind, strictly speaking he still is an employee of Ashley but it’s Benitez that rules. Go in hope and expectation.

  • 43 Fostino // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:05 AM

Would people be happy with this Brighton winger…Robertson and Alex pritchard

    Or that we keep thauvin..tiote..sissoko.

I reckon the first scanario is better all round although sissoko a big loss.

  • 44 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:06 AM

    Springy,
Yeah, that is probably part of the attraction in signing him. Gives good cover across the back. Particularly on a short term deal, to give the squad cover while the defensive aspect of the squad is rebuilt, or Mbabu, Sterry, Gibson et al develop.

  • 45 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:12 AM

    Fostino,
Not seen anything of Pritchard, but I’m not convinced he would be the right signing for us. It certainly doesn’t look like he is Prem standard based on his appearance record for Spurs and his spell at WBA. If we are spending the amount that is being quoted in the media, then we need a player that can make the transition.

Still, even if you took him out, I’d still probably prefer Knockaert and Robertson to an unmotivated and uninterested Thauvin, Tiote and Sissoko.

Rotonda, looks quite impressive as a CV, but his achievements will always fall in the shadow of Pardew and the now infamous 2010 Johnstones paints Trophy triumph.
    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

You read my mind ! seriously though if you look at the knackers we’ve had as manager, rafa has achieved way more than all of them combined

  • 48 Ian Toon // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:17 AM

Fostino- Yes I would be. The Brighton lad was injured in play offs and patched up for 2 nd leg he looked a constant threat although not fully fit. Pritchard is highly rated by Spurs fans I know and he ghosts with pace through the midfield. Injury record might be of concern. Criticism of him seems to be largely on the grounds of cost but again he would be a good investment going forward.

It makes sense to intergrate players into the team as soon as possible. That was KK’s philosophy and didn’t that go well!

  • 49 Mister Tuff // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:17 AM

What standard are we really at.
I’ve found it difficult to assess exactly where we are in terms of the standards/abilities of the team.
Nothing really could be assessed from our friendlies -against teams – whose standards/abilities are not known to me.
As such I cannot get an idea of how good or bad we are.
I supposed we’ll soon find out on Friday evening.

Folks are now making too many excuses for Armstrong – he was back training a fortnight before the Ireland trip.
And plenty of photos from the club whilst in Ireland of him playing football.

  • 50 Rotonda heights // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:19 AM

robertson would also have international team mates in hanley and ritchie

  • 51 SPRINGY // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:20 AM

i wanted thauvin to stop as i think he may be a good player given the chance, but he wants away so get rid, tiote would be an asset in this league with strength and experience but its his last big move so understandable, cheers and good luck, sissoko, talent, strength and pace….when he can be arsed!….and he cant be arsed with us anymore, get rid and replace.

  • 52 Fostino // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:24 AM

    Lilongwe geordie

I just think if we are losing sissoko tiote and wini then a cm of some sort is needed as replacement. Pritchard looks to be available and is rated by spurs fans. He’d a good spell with Brentford few years ago but had a bad year last year.

  • 53 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:25 AM

    Fostino,
I agree we need a centre mid who can create chances, I’m just not sure Pritchard is the answer.

Think you’re right about Haidara. Seems more of an athlete, than having any footballing brain.

I’m quite pleased with a clean sweep. I know jimmy says we are weakening the team but I disagree.

Players who want away are absolutely of no use to us. If we can shift thauvin, tiote and sissoko and replace with knockaert, Forestieri and Henry / Robertson I’d be very happy with that.

  • 55 Ron Knee // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:38 AM

    RH

On your first point, I think we could add Obertan and Sissoko. Players who missed their true vocation!

  • 56 SPRINGY // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:39 AM

we’ve lost gini and townsend, and looking like we are about to lose tiote sissoko and thauvin, with the exception of townsend are they really a loss?
we were relegated after all,yes they would probably rip the this league up if they fancied it and stayed fit, thats if…but theres a chance we would be in the same position as last season if they did, struggling near the bottom, maybe they just didnt work here and a clean slate is probably for the best in the long run.

  • 57 Ian Toon // Jul 31, 2016 at 11:41 AM

Many seem to be judging Pritchard on his poor season at West Brom. He featured against us as a second half sub but did nothing – WBA were shocking though. His style of quick movement and pass and go suggested he wasn’t ever going to fit into a Pulis team. Possibly more of a risk but a potentially exciting type.

Robertson would be a good signing, Targett, Garbutt, Taylor, Henry also good options. Would be happy with any of them…..although admittedly I didn’t see any of garbutt last season.

Pritchard is good player, didn’t really fit in at west brom but very good at brentford, why not loan him for the season with option to buy.

A lb, pritchard and knockeart and I think we are set.

  • 63 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jul 31, 2016 at 12:00 PM

    Outside
I was ganna say Hanley – na – Hayden yes – going to be a star this season.

Hanley – looks a bit slow and ponderous/needs two touches on the ball and tends to want to hoof it – but he has just come back from injury.

I gave it to Anita just on his two through balls/chip to set up two goalscoring chances. Thats why I think we need a proven goalscorer who might of got a shot off/tested the keeper.

Big week ahead in terms of transfers but can’t see any players that come in starting on Friday so I will attempt to pick a starting 11 based on rafas style.

    Sels

    Janmaat lascalles hanley dummett

    Colback hayden

    Anita perez ritchie

    Gayle

If I was gaffer and basef on pre season I would try: (Admittedly I’m still unsure on starting 11)

    Sels

    Jesus lascalles mbemba Dummett

    Anita hayden

    Janmaat perez ritchie

    Gayle

  • 66 SUTTY1978 // Jul 31, 2016 at 12:10 PM

Charlie, sounds like Hanley is Willo’s replacement then! No harm in that, A player like Willo is just what’s required in the Championship.
I’ve just seen that Fulham have Matt Smith playing for them as CF, don’t know when he moved there, he’s a huge lad, remember seeing him play against Liverpool in the FA cup, can’t remember where he was at the time, he absolutely dominated their CB’s. Mbemba wouldn’t have a prayer against him, that’s no silent on Mbemba but he’s giving away about 7″ on him!

Thanks for clarifying why rafa failed at Inter, Napoli and Madrid.

At Inter he took over a treble winning squad and won world club cup, nice!! Napoli he won the super cup and Madrid he was sent packing after a short stint and Zidane came in to steady the ship. Let’s not try to rewrite history. The fans of these clubs see him as a failure during his time at these clubs but if you think that’s success then you don’t have much in terms of expectations!!

Maybe at Napoli he did a decent job but as I say zonal marking doesn’t work, yes I had the audacity to question your messiah Rafa for utilising that tactic, for that I won’t apologise.

Other than that I have no issues with Rafa and like him being the incumbent as manager but I try to look at it with a balanced view.

I think you’ll find yourself in the minority of people dissing Rafa. Why so negative and trying to run the guy down, sounds like you have a real issue with Rafa.

Someone came on here and explained zonal marking for you. 5 games played, 15 scored, 4 conceded. Maybe you would prefer to have a no mark like McCardew in charge.

A better version of Willo I would say and what I like about him he shouts a lot and seemed to link up well with Lascalles. Pair together make a big central pairing.
Interesting Dilemma for RAFA does he find a place for MBemba

Also Sels looks a shouter defence organiser but not sure about his aerial command of the six yard box.

    Interesting times ahead!!!!!!!

i know he got 15 goals for wednesday last season and was hugely influential for them. Quite young so maybe 9m is a decent deal.

like all players can be inconsistent but we need goal scoring creativity with wijni gone and he can obviously do it at this level.

that’s a shame, think he could have been good, although i guess rafa could play perez in that role now with wijni gone.

Sissoko not going to be at open training tomorrow

quite like the look of that, just not sure about janmatt, but maybe rafa can get the best out of him

Forresteri would be perfect. I just can’t see Sheffield Wednesday selling him.

sirjasontoon – from a few threads back, you said you’d swap Rafa for ‘Lee Clarke’ all day long. I think the fact you spelled Lee Clark’s name wrong says it all really.

Charlie, wonder if Rafa will play the CB’s as horses for courses – playing against a big lad it’s Hanley & Lascelles, playing against a quick team it’s Mbemba & Lascelles.
Lascelles is a bit of a “best of both”, he’s pretty quick and also decent in the air.
All the centre backs have a potential Bramble moment in them but that happens to even the best CB’s. My preference is Mbemba & Lascelles, both have the pace to make up for errors occurring but not overly unhappy with any mixture of the three. Add Dummett in there and I think it’s now one of our strongest places on the pitch (for possibly the first time in NUFC history!)

from what i seen yesterday ….imo…in every case i would take new signings
ritchie is as good if not better than townshend…
    i prefer gayle to cisse…
hanley is better suited than collocini to championship now
and hayden looks better in centre defensive mid than tiote ….will need to replace gini and sissoko with rw and creative midfielder …but moneys there ..have faith in rafa

that’s not really definitive though and if you get the chance to play for your countryman rafa in front of 52,000 with probably a better contract….hmmm…

    Sutty
You summed up our centre halves including Dumbest perfectly, all have a potential ‘Bramble moment’ in them

Somebody mentioned earlier about Gayle being a success in the Championship but wondering if he’d cut it in the Premier League for us. The answer to that is – it doesn’t matter! This season we have to think short term and just get who we need to get promoted.

Sure, it would be nice to have the same players perform in the PL too, but anyone who isn’t up to it can be sold back to Championship clubs and we can upgrade to real world class players, which Rafa is going to attract in the top league anyway.

I usually don’t think short term but in this case we have to. Any loss we make on players selling back to lower league teams will be offset by the new PL money.

Outside. Seems funny that there’s not been a big push to replace Wijnaldum. I would have expected they would have had someone lined up like they did with Ritchie. My guess is that it’s felt we have enough players who can play no.10 already at the club.

He ain’t Spanish he’s an Argie who played for Italy as a kid.

I know today is SBR’s memory, but it’s also the 20th anniversary of Shearer signing for us for a then world record fee. I remember being in that crowd with him up on the balcony with Alan ‘Night Owls’ Robson (at least I THINK I remember him being there, am I misremembering that?) and thinking ‘we’re going to smash this league now’. Gutted we couldn’t have at least won one of those FA Cup finals. Alan (Shearer, not Robson) deserved that at the very least. Sigh.
