Rafa – Some Players Still Considering Futures At Newcastle

4:21 pm, Monday, August 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 59 Comments

There’s been some wild activity today as Newcastle made a surprise move to activate the release clause in the contract of Hull City midfielder Mo Diame – and it looks very likely that Newcastle will get their man.

The release clause is for £4.5M, but Hull City have countered today with an offer of a new deal to the 32 times capped Paris-born Senegal midfielder.

But there are reports that Mo has turned that four year offer down and the Chronicle are reporting this afternoon they expect Newcastle to sign the player soon – in the next day or two.

Rafa Benitez – three of four players still undecided

With players still having to come and go this summer, Rafa is concentrating on new players coming in and the Chronicle are reporting we could have as many as four new players through the door soon.

There is also likely to be an effort this week to get some players signed – before we start our Championship season at Fulham on Friday night.

But Rafa will not want this transfer stuff to get in the way of our preparation for the game at Craven Cottage and hopefully we can pick up all 3 points in that first game.

We cannot be over-confident this season and every single game is an important one.

After the utter  frustration, humiliation nad disappointment of last season, we will be happy with every single win we can get this season.

This is what Rafa has said today, and it seems  that some of our players are still undecided about staying at Newcastle:

“We have three or four players considering whether they have to go or will stay. We have offers for some of them. It is a difficult situation for them.”

“The others who started the game will have to be here, but we will see how many soon.”  “I like to have competition for places so I don’t just want to say that this will definitely be the team.”

“Those who weren’t in it must know they have a chance – and they will have a chance. There are 46 games in the Championship. It means we can retain players and give all of them an opportunity.”

Players in that group probably include Cheick Tiote, Manu Riviere, Yoan Gouffran and Florian Thauvin, although there was news yesterday that an offer from Lazio for the Frenchman had been accepted.

We don’t think Moussa Sissoko is considering his future on Tyneside – he wants to leave as soon as possible and he hasn’t been shy about letting people know that.

Comments welcome.

Check out NUFC’s new videos with Aarons and Mbabu on their YouTube channel, quite funny with Mitro telling them to F off hahahaha hope they carry on uploading

    That’s depressing, if true!

  • 3 barkel // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:27 PM

I’m still expecting a fair bit of business to be done. I would imagine one of our GK’s will be on the way plus Sissoko, Tiote, Thauvin & Rivi as well as trimming the u21 (u23?) squad. I think a LB and another winger should be priority before any further strikers. I think Gayle, Mitro & Arma will be all playing for the 1 up top. Perez or SDJ in the no.10. I like we have proper competition for RB with Sterry, Janmaat & Gamez

  • 4 firebug666 // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:27 PM

If we get stuck with Sissoko, he will need to knuckle down and do what he can to impress for a January move 😀

  • 5 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:29 PM

Why are people leaving Mbemba out of their starting 11? If Hanley is to take someones spot pretty sure it wont be his

  • 6 colwell // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:34 PM

Why would we need to sign Knockhart? We have bought Ritchie in they both play the same position? We’d be better off buying an actual left winger instead of putting players out of their preferred one.

  • 7 MadisonToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:34 PM

    Final League Position – 1st
Final no. of points – 100
League Cup round – quarter final
FA Cup round – 5th round
Player of the Season – Armstrong
    Top goal scorer – Armstrong
No. of goals for TGS – 25

I know it’s not expected that Arma will get many minutes but if he goes on a scoring streak, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him in the middle of the 3 supporting players and chipping in with a lot of goals – here’s hoping!

If Sissoko stayed – would be a canny midfield partnership of Diame and Sissoko.

    Nice team for the league:

Why pursue Hanley so bad for him just to be cover for Mbemba and Lascelles?

  • 10 Ron Knee // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:36 PM

I wonder what his teammates think of his antics!

  • 11 colwell // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:37 PM

Mbemba is our best defender why would he be dropped?

  • 12 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:37 PM

Because we needed a CB and he was pretty cheap. Why drop ur best CB?

  • 13 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:38 PM

    Whoops, *knockaert

  • 14 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:42 PM

Well, we have dithering opinions on who our best CH is. Obviously, Lascelles didn’t play much last season but towards the end he was easily our best, most vocal and passionate player. He has carried that through to pre-season and he looks very accomplished in that role. Having said that Mbemba was also a bright light in our defence last season and I agree in ways that he doesn’t deserve to be dropped. However, the reason I would start with that pairing is simply based on the fact that lascelles and Hanley both have championship experience, more so Hanley who captained Blackburn at this level. I just feel like our strongest defence is the one that I have put out. However I wouldn’t be upset if Hanley is on the bench against Fulham because I do really like Mbemba.

Diame – looks very good indeed if we get him.

Open Day – again looks like those who attended enjoyed themselves.

Next FF Meeting – Wednesday 10th August. – wonder what they will ask the club reps – now that there appears to have been massive changes for the better.

    Hi Martoon

    Final League Position – 2nd
Final no. of points – 89
    League Cup round – Q-F
FA Cup round – 4th round
Player of the Season (Blog) – Ritchie
Top goal scorer (TGS) – Mitrovic
No. of goals for TGS – 20

  • 17 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:51 PM

Lascelles is quickly becoming a very hyped young man, certainly hope he can live up to it but Mbemba was very good all season not just when Rafa came in. He doesnt have the experience of the Championship because he is above it

Id be amazed if Mbemba isnt one of the first names on the team sheet

  • 18 toontaff2 // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:51 PM

Janmaat was not happy after Tiote took him out!
Big Vurn and Hayden as definite starters, along with Dummett. Those 3, Gayle and Lascelles were running around the outside of the pitch while the others were playing 5 – a -side- seemed Rafa was keeping them together for a plan! Mind Taffy Dummett was quickest, strange to see a white man catching everyone else – especially one not wearing a police hat or carrying a gun!

Good points, let’s see how the team starts on Friday. I’m happy with whatever Rafa feels is right.

  • 21 Back Door Man // Aug 1, 2016 at 4:58 PM

martoon – to counter those of little faith BDM predicts …

    Final League Position: 1st
    Final no. of points: 132
    League Cup round: Winners
    FA Cup round: Winners
Player of the Season (Blog): Lascelles
    Top goal scorer (TGS): Mitrovic
No. of goals for TGS: 30

    Yep, unbeaten!!!

Anyway, Friday night we’ll see if I’m on target.

  • 22 Rotonda heights // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:00 PM

can’t work out if that’s extremely racist or offensive or not! had to re- read it several times and still not sure.

  • 23 ShirebrookToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:06 PM

Just watched that video mate. Good on them for doing a video and good to see very player laughing and smiling apart from Mitro telling him to fcuk off haha

  • 24 Jail for Ashley // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:08 PM

I’d say Lascelles is nailed on to be captain, can’t see Rafa giving it to anyone else after making him captain all pre-season. If that’s the case then he’s not going to be the fall guy and will be the first name on the team sheet. I can see a Mbemba/Lascelles pairing as well with Hanley waiting for Mbemba to slip up. I’m not sure who the fourth CB is though.

  • 25 SPRINGY // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:08 PM

team for friday with the players we have now…
think mbemba being injured may just give rafa the excuse to leave him out…thats with the players as it stands.

  • 26 Jib // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:10 PM

If you have to re-read something several times hunting frantically for something to be offended at – that says all we need to know about you – you shit-stirring p.c. pillock.

  • 27 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:13 PM

Woodman signs a new deal? Didnt see that coming but very good news

  • 28 Jail for Ashley // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:14 PM

If Hanley starts on the bench it will make a mockery of your ridiculous statement of Rafa doesn’t sign players to sit on the bench.

  • 29 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:15 PM

Hanley will have a long wait if he wants Mbemba to slip up imo

  • 30 Jib // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:16 PM

    Jail for Ashley
Have you noticed Veltmann hasn’t been back on since your vile rascist comment ?

  • 31 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:17 PM

I think Rotonda was looking for a reason not to be offended by what was said…though I know uve got previous for such views which might explain where ur coming from

  • 32 Mister Tuff // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:17 PM

woah – Jib straight in – first abuse of the day.

  • 33 Jail for Ashley // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:21 PM

Not sure about that, lapses of concentration were a major flaw in his game last season, that may well be resolved with competition for places.

  • 34 Jail for Ashley // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:23 PM

It must have been seriously vile to register on your vilometer!

  • 35 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:25 PM

Mixture of being young, having a weary partner beside him, no coaching and being in a new league up against some of the best in the world

In the Championship though he will have none of those issues. He will still make mistakes but Id be very surprised if he has half as many as his competition

  • 36 geordie157 // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:25 PM

    Gouffran will stay.

It’ll be tiote, sissoko, thauvin and riviere that will leave.

  • 37 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:27 PM

I believe it is know as racial stereotyping. Not racist in itself, but it was in bad taste. Personally not offended by it,but others might be.

  • 38 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:28 PM

I do think people ge offended too easilly online these days.

Was meant as tongue in cheek – did read somewhere Dummett was 4th quickest in the Pl, last season!

  • 41 Jail for Ashley // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:30 PM

Not so much being offended but if racist comments go unchecked then where does it stop.

You’ve got a cheek calling out anyone you little slimy maggot.

Hope we sign Diame. Always liked him especially when he was at the hammers (that’s West Ham jizz stain)

  • 46 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:38 PM

I honestly wouldnt go anita on the right, for me wingers have got to be aarons and ritchie

    Janmaat, Mbemba, Lascelles, Gamez,
    Hayden, Colback
    Ritchie, Perez, Aarons

  • 47 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:39 PM

    Veltman getting the lip on.

I wonder what Rotonda makes of these 2 comments ?

  • 49 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:45 PM

Both Ritchie and Knockaert (if he signs) are actually left footed, but seem to prefer playing on the right. A symptom of the modern “cut in and shoot with thier strong foot” idea. I would still like to see one or both crossing from the left at times.

  • 50 Average_Contents // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:46 PM

Aye, it just talks shite all the time.

    Are you related 😉

  • 51 Jail for Ashley // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:48 PM

How on earth are they racist comments Jib, I was asking Veltman if he’d been chewing physcedelic drugs due to his insane ramblings, if he is from Ethiopia which I suspect he is, it is a very popular pastime there. It might be stereo typing him but it certainly isn’t racist.

  • 52 Jail for Ashley // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:49 PM

“They are two different things. Racism is generally a belief that someone is inferior to you based on their race (or yours). A stereotype is just a generalization of a particular group of people.”

  • 53 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 1, 2016 at 5:49 PM

I was going to link it on here but thought better of it. Wish I had now.

It’d certainly explain a lot if it was him.
