There’s been some wild activity today as Newcastle made a surprise move to activate the release clause in the contract of Hull City midfielder Mo Diame – and it looks very likely that Newcastle will get their man.
The release clause is for £4.5M, but Hull City have countered today with an offer of a new deal to the 32 times capped Paris-born Senegal midfielder.
But there are reports that Mo has turned that four year offer down and the Chronicle are reporting this afternoon they expect Newcastle to sign the player soon – in the next day or two.
Rafa Benitez – three of four players still undecided
With players still having to come and go this summer, Rafa is concentrating on new players coming in and the Chronicle are reporting we could have as many as four new players through the door soon.
There is also likely to be an effort this week to get some players signed – before we start our Championship season at Fulham on Friday night.
But Rafa will not want this transfer stuff to get in the way of our preparation for the game at Craven Cottage and hopefully we can pick up all 3 points in that first game.
We cannot be over-confident this season and every single game is an important one.
After the utter frustration, humiliation nad disappointment of last season, we will be happy with every single win we can get this season.
This is what Rafa has said today, and it seems that some of our players are still undecided about staying at Newcastle:
“We have three or four players considering whether they have to go or will stay. We have offers for some of them. It is a difficult situation for them.”
“The others who started the game will have to be here, but we will see how many soon.” “I like to have competition for places so I don’t just want to say that this will definitely be the team.”
“Those who weren’t in it must know they have a chance – and they will have a chance. There are 46 games in the Championship. It means we can retain players and give all of them an opportunity.”
Players in that group probably include Cheick Tiote, Manu Riviere, Yoan Gouffran and Florian Thauvin, although there was news yesterday that an offer from Lazio for the Frenchman had been accepted.
We don’t think Moussa Sissoko is considering his future on Tyneside – he wants to leave as soon as possible and he hasn’t been shy about letting people know that.
