Steven Taylor Signs For MLS Club Portland Timbers

MLS club Portland Timbers have just announced they have signed former Newcastle United center-back Steven Taylor.

Steven left the club at the end of June and had been on the books for 21 years having first signed on in 1995 when he was 9 years old.

He was a ball-boy at St. James’ Park  during the 1990s when Kevin Keegan was manager of the famous Entertainers.

Steven made 268 total appearances for his home town club with 15 goals and was in the first team for 12 years.

The MLS is in full swing and have just finished week 23 of the season.

The Porland Timbers are in 7th position in the western conference – here are the current standings in each of the two divisions.

Here’s the announcement by Portland:

=====

The Portland Timbers have signed longtime English Premier League central defender Steven Taylor, it was announced today.

Taylor, who joins the Timbers with more than 260 appearances across all competitions with Newcastle United F.C., will be added to the Timbers’ roster pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa.

This is what Gavin Wilkinson, General Manager and President of soccer for the Timbers had to say:

“Taylor is a player with a wealth of experience in the English Premier League and will be a good fit in our club,” “

This addition addresses a positional need at a critical stage of the season.”

Taylor, 30, joins the Timbers after spending 13 seasons in the top divisions in England with Newcastle United, including 12 years in the English Premier League.

After making his Premier League debut against Bolton Wanderers on March 28, 2004, Taylor went on to make more than 190 league appearances in the Premiership with Newcastle United, scoring 12 goals.

Caleb Porter, head coach of the Timbers said this about Steven:

“Steven Taylor gives us a proven piece that can step into our backline and perform immediately,”

“His experience and leadership will be very important to our team down the stretch.”

Over his time with Newcastle, Taylor helped the club win the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup and the 2009-10 Football League Championship, which gained the club promotion to the English Premier League after a one-year absence.

Taylor also made eight appearances (6 starts) during Newcastle’s run in the 2012-13 UEFA Europa League.

Taylor will occupy an international slot on the Timbers roster.

Belfast – Ha HA! I see a blog legend that’s what I see and don’t let anyone who doesn’t know the value of anything say differently!. It’s all about having an eye for talent. I would like to join you but it sounds as if you’ve got all the bases covered.

    Best regards.

@14 pretty harsh and short-term assessment of Taylor. He’s a clown and injures readily but he’s had many good games in a Toon shirt, and the last defender I know of who threw his body suicidally at any shot at goal no matter how hard.

    Great news on Woodman.

Interesting if we do sign Diame. Powerful midfielder, 9 goals last season so he will hopefully go someway to replacing Wijnaldum’s goals. Not exactly creative though, which is something we are still lacking. A good solid signing for us if it goes through.

Agreed we need woodman out on loan and getting shot at regularly. 🙂 not the way Stevie T used to of course.

I think Mbemba and Lascelles will develop into a very strong partnership long term, but I think Hanley will have a very important part to play this year. I could even see a situation where Mbemba plays right back for parts of the season allowing Hanley and Lascelles to play together, and forming a strong and physical defensive 4 with Dummet at left back.
