Steven Taylor Signs For MLS Club Portland Timbers

6:13 pm, Monday, August 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 76 Comments

MLS club Portland Timbers have just announced they have signed former Newcastle United center-back Steven Taylor.

Steven left the club at the end of June and had been on the books for 21 years having first signed on in 1995 when he was 9 years old.

He was a ball-boy at St. James’ Park  during the 1990s when Kevin Keegan was manager of the famous Entertainers.

Steven made 268 total appearances for his home town club with 15 goals and was in the first team for 12 years.

The MLS is in full swing and have just finished week 23 of the season.

The Porland Timbers are in 7th position in the western conference – here are the current standings in each of the two divisions.

Here’s the announcement by Portland:

The Portland Timbers have signed longtime English Premier League central defender Steven Taylor, it was announced today.

Taylor, who joins the Timbers with more than 260 appearances across all competitions with Newcastle United F.C., will be added to the Timbers’ roster pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa.

This is what Gavin Wilkinson, General Manager and President of soccer for the Timbers had to say:

“Taylor is a player with a wealth of experience in the English Premier League and will be a good fit in our club,” “

This addition addresses a positional need at a critical stage of the season.”

Taylor, 30, joins the Timbers after spending 13 seasons in the top divisions in England with Newcastle United, including 12 years in the English Premier League.

After making his Premier League debut against Bolton Wanderers on March 28, 2004, Taylor went on to make more than 190 league appearances in the Premiership with Newcastle United, scoring 12 goals.

Caleb Porter, head coach of the Timbers said this about Steven:

“Steven Taylor gives us a proven piece that can step into our backline and perform immediately,”

“His experience and leadership will be very important to our team down the stretch.”

Over his time with Newcastle, Taylor helped the club win the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup and the 2009-10 Football League Championship, which gained the club promotion to the English Premier League after a one-year absence.

Taylor also made eight appearances (6 starts) during Newcastle’s run in the 2012-13 UEFA Europa League.

Taylor will occupy an international slot on the Timbers roster.

“Down the stretch” is an Oregon logging expression meaning – “in the fullness of time “

  • 11 Belfast // Aug 1, 2016 at 6:29 PM

“Down the stretch”. Would be the last part of a game, season, race, etc.

  • 12 Belfast // Aug 1, 2016 at 6:30 PM

Trying to confuse me Jib ?

  • 13 Belfast // Aug 1, 2016 at 6:31 PM

Easily one of the worst players I’ve ever seen in a black & white shirt, and I’ve seen some stinkers. Horrific defender, relegated twice, wot more do u need 2 know ? Hope his next shits a hedgehog

  • 15 Ian Toon // Aug 1, 2016 at 6:35 PM

Belfast – Ha HA! I see a blog legend that’s what I see and don’t let anyone who doesn’t know the value of anything say differently!. It’s all about having an eye for talent. I would like to join you but it sounds as if you’ve got all the bases covered.

    Best regards.

Belfast I say nowt mate until the pitch forks are out lol

Jesper never had these problems with his smiley faces like.

  • 29 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2016 at 6:54 PM

@14 pretty harsh and short-term assessment of Taylor. He’s a clown and injures readily but he’s had many good games in a Toon shirt, and the last defender I know of who threw his body suicidally at any shot at goal no matter how hard.

  • 30 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2016 at 6:55 PM

Give it up Belfast, stick to what you do best. Ian – what is it he does best BTW?

  • 31 Belfast // Aug 1, 2016 at 6:55 PM

A very good talent scout I’ll have you know.

  • 32 Belfast // Aug 1, 2016 at 6:58 PM

Won’t be using any new material in protest at the no tick policy Skunki.

  • 33 Belfast // Aug 1, 2016 at 6:59 PM

It’s all peace and love at the moment Tony. Might be a different story if we lose on Friday. 🙂

  • 34 Belfast // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:00 PM

Even Toonkk has us finishing 4th.

  • 35 Tonytoon73 // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:03 PM

Usually I moan but happy as owt we will dominate that league

  • 36 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:09 PM

    Great news on Woodman.

Interesting if we do sign Diame. Powerful midfielder, 9 goals last season so he will hopefully go someway to replacing Wijnaldum’s goals. Not exactly creative though, which is something we are still lacking. A good solid signing for us if it goes through.

  • 37 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:22 PM

Agreed we need woodman out on loan and getting shot at regularly. 🙂 not the way Stevie T used to of course.

  • 38 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:22 PM

I think Mbemba and Lascelles will develop into a very strong partnership long term, but I think Hanley will have a very important part to play this year. I could even see a situation where Mbemba plays right back for parts of the season allowing Hanley and Lascelles to play together, and forming a strong and physical defensive 4 with Dummet at left back.

  • 39 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:23 PM

Anybody else wondering if tonbotherer will be back on with a new cb hate?

  • 40 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:23 PM

  • 41 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:24 PM

Ideally Woodman would go to a mid table league 1 side, or play off challenging side. I’m not really sure which sides need a keeper in that division, but I’m sure that some of them would benefit from a youngster of Woodman’s ability, in the same way Norwich did of Forsters.

  • 42 Pat On The Heed // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:30 PM

    Steven Taylor’s gone??

  • 43 NUFCPaul // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:43 PM

Taylor is going to get to know Portland quite well during his injury lay-offs. Reminds me of my first year in the States while I was waiting for my work permit. Twelve months of exploring Cambridge and Boston. Happy days…

  • 44 NUFCPaul // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:46 PM

Pat on the heed – don’t blame you for not noticing. He’s been absent from the team sheet so often he might as well have been in Portland the whole time.

  • 45 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:46 PM

Good luck to him over there.

  • 46 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:46 PM

Ciaran Clark inbound aswell as Diame…interesting

  • 47 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:50 PM

Where is the Clark rumour from? I thought Villa had aid recently he was going nowhere after they turned down a Prem clubs bid for him? A big lad, that would indicate that Rafa sees Dummet as a left back I think.

  • 48 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:50 PM

IF this rumour about us triggering Ciaran Clark’s release clause is true that will be the only signing i wont be happy with. Ok maybe hes an average 4th choice CB, but hayden and dummett can play there? does this mean we’re not gonna sign a left back and stick with dummett/haidara/gamez?

  • 49 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:51 PM

both craig hope and george caulkin saying we’ve triggerred the clause ib his contract, better not be anything over £4m…

  • 50 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:52 PM

Caulkin mate, one journo I trust

  • 51 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:53 PM

Tonytoon on NUFCblog…what year is this?

  • 52 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:54 PM

i mean clark is hardly an inspired signing. centre back really isn’t the priority would rather we be working on deals for knockaert/pritchard etc. (maybe we still are) but i trust rafa who knows maybe he could turn clark into a decent player, hell, gouffran actually scored the other day and anita actually looks a solid player so who knows.

  • 53 jazzyp // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:54 PM

Over the moon if we get Diame. Clark on the other hand…Not so much. Even the villa fans are offering to pay to bring him here.

Well at least we will have another Taylor on our hands

  • 54 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:56 PM

You never know, hes only 23/24/25, maybe rafa can turn his career around.

  • 55 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:56 PM

    Cheers James and WW.
An interesting signing, if true. Certainly not an outstanding centre half, but probably decent enough back up at this level. Would that be enough for him though? Surely he would want a starting spot?

  • 56 GeordieTwo // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:57 PM

I’ll be able to have a good look at Saylor in the MLS, expecially when the whitecaps play Portland. The whitecaps have David Edger now. If any remember he was with Newcastle as a young’un. He hasn’t played yet but is getting close. It should be interesting watching the pair of them and reporting to you lot. It’s too bad Oba Martins is gone. He was fun to watch over here.

  • 57 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:57 PM

remember when people were saying on here a few months ago “we may make a few signings/have a quiet transfer window” rafa is changing the whole outlook of the squad atm and it looks like we could have another 3 or 4 signings on our hands! Like how we’ve got so much more domestic/championship experience though.

  • 58 SUTTY1978 // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:58 PM

Funniest headline I have seen today “Diame out, Sissoko in?” From the Hull daily mail.
If Sissoko gets linked to Madrid again, I will expect similar from the Chronicle “Sissoko out, Ronaldo in?”

  • 59 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:58 PM

exactly its weird mate, we may be playing 50+ games so taking into account injuries he may be called upon more than expected

  • 60 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 7:59 PM

Rafa supposedly wants “2 XI’s that can challenge for the league title” so i guess thats why we’re making so many more signings

  • 61 Ron Knee // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:00 PM

    Two days ago:-

Ciaran Clark has pledged his future to Aston Villa, says boss Roberto Di Matteo.

Rivals Albion have been sniffing around the Republic of Ireland international although they’re yet to lodge an official bid.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis is a known admirer and could make an offer before the transfer window closes, but Di Matteo isn’t fazed.

“Ciaran is a Villa man, a Villa boy, he has pledged his future to us. He will be staying with us.”

Two days is a long time in football!

  • 62 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:00 PM

Tbf Clark was very highly rated once upon a time and we do need a 4th choice CB (he can also play LB I believe?)

Am happy enough with him coming in

  • 63 SUTTY1978 // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:00 PM

Rafa can’t turn Clarke into a good player, all the turd polish in the world wouldn’t be enough to do that job.

  • 64 the white tino // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:01 PM

    Final position 1St
    Points 107
    League cup q/final
    Fa cup 5th round
    Player of season lascelles
    Top scorer mitrovich
    No of goals 24

  • 65 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:03 PM

I got the Hanley signing, added another voice, huge championship experience and a more physical type of centre half. Clark on the other hand doesn’t really add anything other than a body. 26 now, but maybe there is more to him then has been shown at Villa.

  • 66 Belfast // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:04 PM

He’s looked shite anytime I’ve watched Villa, but could say the same about the rest of his team mates.

  • 67 Tonytoon73 // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:06 PM

WWSBRD what you trying to say mate it’s 2016 lol

  • 68 jazzyp // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:06 PM

  • 69 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:07 PM

That’s the one. I knew I’d read something like that.

Clark wasn’t even a constant first choice for Villa last season. Only 16 starts last year in a pretty awful side/squad.

  • 70 SUTTY1978 // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:08 PM

Can’t see us signing Diame, his agent always insists on release clauses, that’s why he left West Ham for peanuts and why he’s doing the same from Hull. After the Townsend balls up, Charnley said there will be no more release clauses. This one is in the shitter before its started.

  • 71 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:09 PM

Haha been awhile fella! Was just highlighting a blog legends return

  • 72 Tonytoon73 // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:13 PM

WWSBRD had to come back for mine and your score predictions and yes I’m still the legend haha

  • 73 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:15 PM

Lee Ryder now saying we’re hoping to announce Clark and Diame in next 24 hours. One thing you can tell rafa has spotted was the lack of physical presence and pace, we’re now improving that with the gayle, diame and clark signings

  • 74 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:16 PM

Been awhile since we did predictions! Forgot all about that…pretty sure I won though haha

  • 75 Tonytoon73 // Aug 1, 2016 at 8:22 PM

WWSBRD yes you did mate but I’m back with vengeance haha, where is butler coz he is a good one

  • 76 DubaiMicky // Aug 2, 2016 at 4:56 AM

Good for him, he wasn’t our best defender, but hey ho, good to see he has another job.
