Ciaran Clark At Training Ground After Completing Medical – Photo

5:29 pm, Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 180 Comments

Here’s the first photo evidence that Ciaran Clark is in Newcastle as he leaves the Benton training grounds after completing his medical.

It could well be a double announcement of the signing of both Ciaran and Mohamed Diame tonight or tomorrow morning  – with Diame seen entering Freeman Hospital this afternoon.

What a two days it’s been for Newcastle United and Rafa is certainly shaking things up for the better – long may it continue.

    Hail/Shirebrook

Seeing as your having a problem picking the team I got a question for you which will totally do your heads in, once the team has been picked how will Rafa play that team, we all expect a 4-2-3-1 formation but how will he play it, seeing as we haven’t got that many wingers could he have the midfield three playing centrally trying to pick a pass to Gayle who will be full of movement and if we need width get it from the fullbacks, or will he keep it very tight at the back and go with some width with the midfield 3 and try to stretch them and have late runners getting into the box.

  • 5 jazzyp // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:40 PM

Well at least it looks like we getting boots over the line this summer.
Would still like a first choice Lb as all the current crop of Lb’s at the club are injury prone.

  • 6 ShirebrookToon // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:43 PM

Cheers spoof I’m going for a lie down now lol

  • 7 GeordieTwo // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:46 PM

Clark is a very decent CB for the Champs. We’re going to be much more solid at the back. Clark and Lascelles might be an interesting partnership. I’m a bit worried about 4-2-3-1 as well lads. Unless Aarons stays healthy and really shines we may need another winger to pair up with Ritchie.

  • 8 GeordieTwo // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:48 PM

Strange goings on with Thaujam. Spend all that time setting up a deal to ship him to Italy for some fresh pasta and virgin olive oil and then he sulks and says he doesn’t want to go? Bollocks…..

  • 9 Phatoon // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:51 PM

Wouldn’t mind Janmaat being RW if needed

  • 10 GeordieTwo // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:56 PM

Yes, I think Janmaat could be a winger at a pinch Phatoon mate. He doesn’t like defending anyway. 😆

  • 11 Ron Knee // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:56 PM

Have NUFC given up on Knockaert?

  • 12 kilcline // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:57 PM

With Brighton signing Pritchard I fully expect them to let knockaert leave for us to give us a choice of 3 wingers plus Roberts in the youth team who will be better than all of them.

  • 13 colwell // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:57 PM

Pretty much strengthened every position except LW. It would be great if we sign a striker and a winger but i’d be happy enough with just the later.
I hope Rafa doesn’t end up playing Perez LW again and Arrons will be injured after 3 games so i’d say this is our weakest position now.

  • 14 GeordieTwo // Aug 2, 2016 at 5:58 PM

Can Rafa get some mileage out of Thauvin? What do people think?

  • 15 Belfast // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:00 PM

Tony xia seems to be a bit of a pleb.

  • 16 Spoof // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:00 PM

In all honesty I don’t think that Thauvin is interested in us, he just wants to be out.

  • 17 GeordieTwo // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:02 PM

Not much info available on Roberts except he played for the Whitley Bay Sproggs. No performance data. He’s 19.

He has become a distraction and a total pain in the buttocks spoof mate. He only wants to go to one club? What kind of bollocks is that?

  • 20 Jib // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:09 PM

This story about Rafa and couple of young madrileños is a funny one.
Earlier in the month some Spanish media reported that Rafa had enquired about Borja Mayoral (the new Raul) for a season’s loan.
Last week Mayoral went to Wolfsburg for a season which seemed a snub to Rafa.
I hope Rafa and Perez who cordially detest other stop playing silly buggers and sort out what is being called in Spain “Operacion Sissoko”

  • 21 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:10 PM

Dummet is not a correct response.

  • 22 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:11 PM

why do we need to spend 5M on a 4th string CB????

  • 23 GeordieTwo // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:11 PM

If we finally sell Sissoko possibly we’ll go after McCormack again? I think he would be the perfect fit for us.

  • 25 GeordieTwo // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:13 PM

I don’t think he’ll be 4th string Taco mate. Statistically, he’s better than Mbemba in most aspects of the game. He’ll be pushing Lascelles and Hanley for a starting place. Mbemba has to improve.

@ G2 re Aaron’s. I was paying particular attention to him on Monday training and when he was practicing putting over crosses he couldn’t do it and they were flying well over the centre forwards heads. Rafa walked over to him and was telling him what he wanted and the little git walked away. Rafa was clearly annoyed with him and whispered something in his ear. Aaron’s obviously listened this time and his crosses immediatelyinproved with Rafa patting him on the back. You don’t mess about with Rafa.
It was also noticeable that Thaurin wasn’t upto the training and appears to be missing his girlfriend who has insisted she does not want to live in the north east as she likes France. I would suggest he gets himself a good Geordie girl must be one out there.

  • 39 GeordieTwo // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:26 PM

  • 49 SUTTY1978 // Aug 2, 2016 at 6:41 PM

We seem to be buying a lot of “versatile” players. The problem is that most players become “versatile” because they are not good enough to nail down a regular spot in their chosen position.
Think this is the reason a lot of people are struggling to come up with the starting line up.
One of the biggest problems over the last couple of years has been the LH side. All of our attacking play has had to be down the right.
For me we have done nothing to strengthen that area of the pitch. Still need a LB and the only winger we have bought is a right winger.

Really looking forward to this season and I think the arrival of Diame pretty much confirms Sissoko is on his way out .

What would your best team be with all players fit and the other targets we have been linked with ? :

    ———————————Krul————————–

    –Janmaat——–M’bemba——–Clark——Anita–

    –Ritchie———Shelvey——-Diame—–Aarons–

    ——————–Mitrovic——–Perez——————

I think Mitrovic could flourish if we play a solid 4-4-2 with crosses coming in from both sides and he could have a similar impact to Carroll on our last championship season .

Also I like Lascelles atitude, but he is still very raw and Clarke is the better player IMO .

Also I a top quality LB would be the icing on the cake as I just don’t think Dummet is good enough .

  • 70 DaraghL // Aug 2, 2016 at 7:13 PM

Clark is a liability at center back. Has all the makings of a good player but prone to a mistake.

I prefer him at left back. He’s more solid there and think that he’s either likely to be played there or Rafa might be (hopefully not) considering a back 3.

He also played defensive mid in the past but he’s not a necessity there.

Good to have depth and players like Diame, Harden and Clark are clearly being sought due to their flexibility.

  • 75 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 2, 2016 at 7:18 PM

Mbemba is the perfect partner for Lascelles, he’s fast, skillful and good defensively. I see him as a sort of defensive sweeper covering for the rest of the back line.

Hanley is to much like Lascelles but not quite as good, I could see us getting caught out by nippy forwards if they are paired.

  • 76 GeordieTwo // Aug 2, 2016 at 7:19 PM

The many years of hurt are showing up in the FA cup predictions, it seems to be endemic in our psyches.

Be great if we are all (well most of us) wrong!

  • 81 Wayayman // Aug 2, 2016 at 7:32 PM

Good shout about the training day, Oldgit. The crossing was shocking eh? Not as bad as the finishing though! It seems none of our lads can head a ball except Mitro (who wasnt on the open session) and Arma looks like he might be trying too hard to impress as everything he hit was either scuffed or blazed over. He’s bloody quick though.

Jesus gave a few of them a bit of a schooling in the 6 a sides, beating people and getting the ball into the box when he played on the right.
Thauvin wasnt interested, Riviere looked like a Jack Russell chasing a ball in the drills. Gouffran was disinterested (and has a terrible first touch)
On the plus side, Savait looked like he’s good on the ball and has a few skills. Colback looked a class above, Shelvey looks a lot thinner (still got a pin head though) and Sels couldn’t be beaten. Looks very good on crosses too (the ones that didnt sail out high wide and handsome.

At Southend we were at the side of the goal during the warm up and the keeper coach Simon Smith came over to say that we might want to move or keep an eye open. He wasn’t wrong, all of the mids and forward took goes at striking and I think only 2 shots went in. Most weren’t even on target.Still, it’s doing it during the game that counts.

One thing i’ve thought during the friendlies is that with Gayle and Perez in the team we’ve got two fast and tricky forward looking players but they have been crowded out for the most part. When Mitro has been on the pitch we’ve had more options as his hold up play is immense and it allows Shelvey & perez to get further up the field.

We’ll see in a few days though, no Mitro for 4 games is a big worry I think.

  • 82 Legolas // Aug 2, 2016 at 7:32 PM

Alex Pritchard will be a Brighton player within the next 48 hours, according to Sky sources, with a fee worth up to £8m having been agreed with Spurs and only a few more formalities needing to be completed.

However, Anthony Knockaert will not be leaving Brighton in this transfer window, according to Sky sources.

The two deals are not linked in any way and Newcastle no longer retain an interest in the player.

From sky sports. Does this mean we no longer want Pritchard or knock arty ?

  • 83 Jib // Aug 2, 2016 at 7:39 PM

All eyes on Marseille for Florian Thauvin

Marseille are now increasingly confident of having an offer accepted by Newcastle United for winger Florian Thauvin.

According to this morning’s edition of L’Équipe, Marseille have made a formal offer for the player which constitutes to a season long loan deal with an obligatory buy option worth €11m, €1.5m less than the deal that Lazio were offering.

Newcastle are expected to decide imminently whether or not to accept Marseille’s proposal.

AHAAA! The very Wayayman I wanted to speak to!

Cast your mind back into the kids of kat week, you thought I was having a fun at you about Dummett – sorry mate but I wasn’t at all, it was a comment on the general observations about his play I think, anyway not about you so…that..er just about…takes care of…. that….then.

  • 99 Tsunki // Aug 2, 2016 at 8:29 PM

Kids of kat week? Eh? How does auto correct get that from “mists of last week”? Conspiracy!

  • 100 Legolas // Aug 2, 2016 at 8:31 PM

Don’t want to put a downer on things but I didn’t realise how poor our record is against Fulham in recent years. It must have been during the time we couldn’t win in London for love nor money.

My best 11 would be 352 because I think we could end up playing that way.

    ———————————sels/krul————————–

    –—–M’bemba——–Hanley——lascelles –

    –Ritchie———Shelvey——-Diame—-Perez-–Aarons–

    ——————–Mitrovic——–gayle——————

The pace and creativity of that side would be good enough for the premier league let alone this league.

The more conservative possible starting line up is likely to be

    ———————————sels————————–

    –Janmaat——–hanley——–lascelles——dummett–

    –Ritchie———Shelvey——-Hayden—–Aarons–

    ——————–gayle——–Perez——————

Subs:darlow,mbemba/clark (depending on Mbemba fitness), Armstrong, colback, anita, diame, Gamez.

This for me highlights need for a left winger and striker. Hopefully top quality.

    Belfits,
That would absolutely put the icing on the cake for this summer if Palace came up with 25M for him and his first presser was to say how much he’d like to join a big club before going in to hiding until they played Arsenal.

Rumours from Sky about Villa now chasing McCormack. We seem to be shoring up our defence but have questions about scoring goals. Villa seem to be looking for goals. Maybe Jordan Ayew is on his way out?

  • 110 Jail for Ashley // Aug 2, 2016 at 9:12 PM

I think that when both your rivals are in for him and have both had serious bids turned down then it’s time to snap him up, even if we sell him next January back to a Championship club for half the price, if he gets us promoted then it;s worth the hit!

  • 111 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 2, 2016 at 9:13 PM

Diame might be the best player we’ve ever bought but this desire to stick him straight into the starting line up against Fulham without a chance to get used to the rest of the players would be a mistake.

  • 112 Wayayman // Aug 2, 2016 at 9:16 PM

No worries Tsunki. I appreciate the comment.

  • 113 cyprus // Aug 2, 2016 at 9:18 PM

Interesting game football. Apoel Nicosia trailing 2-1 from the first game to Rosenborg, and heading out of group stage for CL, ninetieth minute. I noticed a bookie offering 200 on them qualifying, right then.

    Go on, guess the score. 90′: 0-0. 97′: 3-0

  • 114 GloucesterGeordie // Aug 2, 2016 at 9:27 PM

Jail, agreed, I said basically the same thing earlier, the money we will get for promotion (assuming we get it) will dwarf any money we lose on him if we were to get rid. I think letting him go to a rival will be a big mistake

  • 119 Belfast // Aug 2, 2016 at 9:36 PM

I agree on McCormack like he obviously ain’t worth the money now but if his goals get you promoted it’s worth a lot more.

Snatching your two promotion rivals top target would be a pretty shrewd move.

    Putting some squad together now

    GK Sels, Darlow, Elliott, Woodman
DEF Janmaat, Sterry, Mbabu, Anita, Mbemba, Lascelles, Hanley, Clark, Dummett, Gamez, Haidara
MID Hayden, Shelvey, Diame, Saivet, Colback, Ritchie, Aarons, De Jong, Gouffran
FWD Mitrovic, Gayle, Perez, Armstrong, Toney

Still think Krul, Sissoko, Tiote, Thauvin and Rivière will be sold and we’ll get a left back, winger and striker in + maybe another AM

Wouldn’t like to try and pick a starting line up from that little lot but think Rafa will rotate when needed and it’ll be more than enough to go up

  • 130 jimmysmith // Aug 2, 2016 at 10:25 PM

Mmmmm maybe Janmaat at fullback and Anita right half/wing, and that team @116 will pass teams off the park.

Metro’s return can’t come soon enough, and then Anita might lose his spot to someone? who’ll swing them in. Although Anita is a super footballer and I think you’ll see that at the lower level in a winning team.

Plenty of options. Diame, De Jong, Mitrovic with Tiote holding, Ritchie wide and another swinging them in, is one i’d like to see.

The Guardian suggests the two young Spaniards would be offered as loanees. It’s pointless of course unless they would be regulars in the match day squad. Benitez didn’t come down in the last shower, and he was at RM less than a year ago. They’d have to be good enough to command a regular first team place and improve the 11. It does seem quite fanciful, even an odd proposition.

    ToF,
I think you’re one of the posters in the camp that haven’t quite got to grips with this whole relegation malarky. This summers window was never going to be about putting together a team that would go up and assault the CL. It looks very much like he is putting together a tough no nonsense team together all with top flight experience that will do the job in hand AND hold their own in the first season back. Once back in the PL we can then attract that top quality LB, CB and ST. I think Rafa is planning for the long term and it’s going to take a few windows. Unlike before though, unless Masters throws a spanner in we’ll not be taking one step forward three steps back anymore.

    Cyprus,
Getting two young kids from Madrid would seem to be very much going against the grain from the players he has brought in so far and I don’t see them coming in to play for the U21’s

  • 165 Jail for Ashley // Aug 3, 2016 at 6:30 AM

On Hanley and Clark, maybe Lascelles and Mbemba might turn out to be a World class pairing under Rafas guidance, it doesn’t do any harm at all to have a Scottish and ROI defender as a back up to your main CB’s. Willo was a perfectly adequate back up and gave his all, his biggest problem was the lack of cover ensured that he played more games than the other three CB’s that came and went combined.

  • 166 hibbitt // Aug 3, 2016 at 6:34 AM

No point in loans at this stage we need players who can do the job now

Saying that I’d have that young kid from Man U here as LB with Dummet as back up to him or vice versa and Gámez back up to Jaanmat, I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of Haidara anytime soon.

  • 168 Jail for Ashley // Aug 3, 2016 at 6:50 AM

    Disclaimer:
Williamson did not make more appearances than the other three combined. It felt like it though and he made way to many appearances to be classed as a third choice back up.

  • 169 Ron Knee // Aug 3, 2016 at 6:51 AM

“Newcastle United will turn their attentions to attacking reinforcements after striking deals for Mo Diame and Ciaran Clark, who both underwent medicals on Tyneside today.

The Magpies want to sign an experienced forward and a wide player to complete a summer of huge change on Tyneside and are confident they will be able to do both deals long before the end of the transfer window.”

The sooner the better! How many red cards will Nitro get this season?

  • 170 Jail for Ashley // Aug 3, 2016 at 6:54 AM

    Ron Knee,
Mccormack and Knockeart with Sissoko going to WBA or Palace for 25M would make this the best window since Shearer signed.

  • 171 cyprus // Aug 3, 2016 at 6:55 AM

    Jail and Hibbitt,
I really have no idea about those players, but just read about them. They seem like useful players whom would do what you require: suitable for this window and we’ll upgrade when in the PL (Jail) ; battle-ready players, for second tier, now (Hibbitt)

I get what’s required to make it in the Championship, and the restrictions that a team in this league has. I just have a problem with these two signings, and that gives me some misgivings overall. I have affiliations with both West Ham and Villa supporters which perhaps gives either a more accurate, or maybe more jaundiced view. We’ll see.
