We had a feeling that Florian Thauvin wanted a move only to Marseille and we wrote an article on that last Friday.
It wasn’t based on rocket science, but rather that Florian had such a nightmare time of it at Newcastle for six months in a different new country with a different language and different culture that we thought he would not be too willing to move to Italy and Lazio this summer.
It seems that’s how it’s turned out, with Florian finally telling Lazio on Sunday he did not want to move there, after the Italian club had an offer accepted by Newcastle for a one year loan with a buy clause once Thauvin had played so many games for Lazio.
Florian Thauvin in action for Newcastle last season
So the attention has turned to Marseille and whether they can come up with a deal that would be acceptable to Newcastle – and certainly earlier in the summer the offers the French club made were not acceptable to Newcastle.
Since then Marseille have sold some players for huge transfer fees, so their financial position is now much improved.
But Marseille may still find it difficult to come up with a deal and perhaps that’s why Florian looked so concerned during Open Day yesterday?
There’s news in the French daily L’Equipe today that Marseille are still confident of success in getting Florian back to the French club – and maybe that’s because there’s no competition left with no other club coming in for the 23 year-old.
In today’s L’Equipe, Marseille have made a formal offer for the player for a season long loan with a buy option after Florian plays a certain number of games for the French club this season.
The deal is said to be worth €11M (£9.8M) in total, which will give Newcastle £3M less than we paid Marseille for Thauvin less than a year ago – and we assume that total amount includes the loan fee.
And the offer is reported to be €1.5M less than Lazio’s offer, which was accepted by Newcastle last Friday.
So we’ll have to wait and see if Newcastle accept this offer, but we doubt Newcastle will and lose a full £3M on Thauvin in a short 12 months.
Rafa has said the club will only sell if they get the right offers in for players.
What do you think?

Repost.
Our Toon
Yeah I realise that AC coming back would be very unlikely and as you say a pipe dream, especially as he had a very good end of season for WH and was close to being at the Euros for England.
Still an offer of Sissoko for him plus £15m could be a tempter. ?
I was really thinking along the lines of having a big strong un for set pieces to break down packed defences.
Having had time to ponder on it, Lascelles and Hanley could be the right men for that situation, Mitro ought to be able to do it as well just not sure if he has the bulk.
Bus parking could be a problem though, on the pitch not the blog!!

Comment #4If Thauvin is not wanted then take the offer, the £3m loss will be dwarfed when Sissoko goes, and it already has been dwarfed with the Gini profit, some you win and some you lose, let him go and get a replacement in asap.

Comment #5If we can recoup anything like £10m for Thauvin I’d be delighted.
Can’t think of a player with a greater hype to performance differential that we’ve signed in the last 10 years.
Use that £10m and a bit more to get Brady. Traditional winger, fantastic, consistent delivery, links well with others, eye for goal, good at set-pieces, engine to get up and down, good in the tackle, commitment a given, can play LB if needed.

Comment #11If I was advising Thauvin, firstly I’d ask any children involved? If not, ditch the vanity piece and do what’s best for yourself. In today’s day and age the likelihood you’ve found a lifetime partner is slim to none, especially given your status. So don’t let her dictate your short career.

Not sure on that one but I know she is the reason he won’t be going to Italy. She desperately wants to stay in France and wants Marseille to make a move

Comment #13For the life of me I can’t settle on a starting XI, I’m sure Rafa is similarly finding it difficult to come up with the blend he goes with start off.

Comment #15People should not presume the misses is the reason. After all he let him go to the toon which would be more of a culture shock than lazio. Thauvin should realise the best career move is pull his socks up and redeem his reputation with the toon. He won’t find a better manager to guide him in his perdicament. Easy option is go back to mommy in marsaille…..Maybe it’s the mum that’s the problem ; )

Comment #18think Diame might just play the same role as sissoko did last season under rafa, in the number 10.

Comment #19I can see that with our new additions we have players who will score us goals, but I’m a little concerned about us not having someone in the team to ‘steal’ us goals.
That couple of times during a match where instead of marauding we go route 1, header, chest, goal.
Last time we had the likes of Carol, Shola, Lovenkrands and Harewood, of whom only Lovenkrands was under 6′.
We don’t have a target man which diminishes how we can play when things just aren’t working.

For me Shelvey has to start. For his commitment to getting in shape, because he’s by far our best playmaker and unlocking packed defences could become a theme this season. Hopefully will prove early on that his summer’s effort to self-improvement is to be a lasting change.
Who partners him I’m not sure. Hayden probably has the best mobility and athleticism, Colback has the doggedness and he and Shelvey seemed to click instantly on Shelvey’s debut, never playing together again for the rest of the season I believe due to Colback getting a yellow that led to a suspension and Shelvey’s drop in form.
Tiote still in the mix too and I’m not convinced he will be away just yet. Saivet more of an unknown quantity.
Going to be very intersting to see how he handles the man behind the ST. Imagine sometimes we’ll play effectively 2 STs with one deeper and other times Diame to be more of a classic AM, which then poses the question will Diame on the occasion we go with say Mitro and Perez drop into a DM role!?
There’s an abundance of options and versatility throughout the squad.
