Official – Ciaran Clark Joins Newcastle On Five Year Deal

3:14 pm, Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 27 Comments

Newcastle have just announced the signing of 26 year-old Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark.

This is another excellent signing for Newcastle and we are also expecting another signing later today – Mohamed Diame from Hull City.

This is Newcastle’s 7th summer signing this summer and it is believed Ciaran  cost us £5M from Aston Villa.

Ciaran Clark – 7th summer signing for Newcastle United

Here is what Newcastle have just put up on their web-site:

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland international defender Ciaran Clark.

The versatile 26-year-old joins from Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee and has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at St. James’ Park.

Clark came up through the ranks at Villa Park before making his debut in August 2009, while still a teenager.

It wasn’t long before he became a regular in the Villa side and over the following six seasons made a further 158 appearances, scoring ten goals.

The center-back has also won 19 caps for the Republic of Ireland, representing his nation at Euro 2016 this summer.

This is what Ciaran said after signing:

“Newcastle is a massive club so I’m really happy to be here,”

“Importantly, it is a club that is moving in the right direction and pushing for the right things, so I’m really excited to now be a part of that.”

“Things seem to have progressed really quickly over the last few days, but I’m delighted to have got it all done and be a part of this squad.”

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez added:

“Ciaran is a very versatile player, as a left-footed center-back he can also play left-back and also as a defensive midfielder.

“He has a lot of experience of English football and will add good balance and competition to our squad.”

“I am sure he will progress with us here at Newcastle, we are very happy for him to join us.”

This is a top signing for Newcastle and we feel that Benitez can make Ciaran into a very good player for us.

Wonder where Rafa will play him – left-back maybe?

Comments welcome.

    Shamelessly reposted:
This is what I don’t get about McCormack – last year we paid ~£12m for Mitrovic. Presumably they thought he was good enough to score goals in the premier league and was young enough to get better. Why would we prefer to play McCormack than Mitrovic if they paid around the same amount for him in a league above?!?

It makes no sense, I hope it’s just agent fed paper talk. Please can we drop this “Championship s a different sport” rubbish- that you need lower quality players specifically for a lower quality league, it’s absurd. Would you rather have Aguero or McCormack? Some people seem to answer questions with that crazy line “He’s done it in the championship” – personally I’d rather play the better player.

Same stuff went for the manager talk. Some thought that because we were in a lower quality league we had to go for a lower quality manager who “knew the league”. Why the hell would we want Nigel Pearson instead of Rafa?!? It’s ridiculous!

It’s not a different sport! People almost spam this argument to try and give themselves another job if they’ve never progressed to the premier league or failed in the premier league, that they’re “Specialists”, no, they’re just that level and are not expected to improve as you would most managers/ players that you sign at championship level.

Sometimes I can’t believe the stuff I hear on football radio/ forums etc.

Well, whatever Rafa has seen in Clark, I haven’t, however, he is here, so lets hope he is a success.

After a long time a NUFC manager has bothered to sign a 4th choice center half. Can only be a good news I hope..

    Where the F is Diame??

  • 5 Bobbybee // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:26 PM

Gonufc, I’ve said the same since we got relegated. The Championship is just a poorer version of the PL, so the better you buy, regardless of where they’ve played previously, the better chance of promotion.
The other nonsense is the argument that every other team will be inspired by SJP and will cause us problems. They said the same last time as i recall, but we went unbeaten at home. That’s our job – to make SJP as hostile as possible. Scare the buggers to death. 😉

  • 12 SPRINGY // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:42 PM

madrid have no interest in signing sissoko according to marca

  • 13 martoon // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:42 PM

I think El Sleeve called it right. Diame has a previous heart problem so they were probably doing tests at the Freeman yesterday and a normal medical today. Better to be safe than sorry!

  • 14 SPRINGY // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:43 PM

  • 18 Ron Knee // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:46 PM

“Villa are ready to offer Diame lucrative personal terms to try and lure him to Villa Park, but Newcastle are still in pole position to land the 29-year-old.”

  • 20 SPRINGY // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:47 PM

left back aye?….just wondered if he would been on the right.

  • 21 JP...from The Rock // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:49 PM

Well I’ll be damned! I hope this doesn’t turn out to be Remy all over again. Does anyone know if Villas chairman enjoys playing Fifa?

  • 22 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:51 PM

Finally we have depth in the central defence. Although I see Hanley the weakest compared to lascelle mbemba & clark.
Next priority MUST be a left back. Transfers are not easy to come these days. Sort the left back first, then we can look for attacking mid & striker.

  • 23 JP...from The Rock // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:52 PM

News in Spain coming through is that Real Madrid aren’t interested in signing Sissoko. Will this saga ever end!?

  • 24 Wayayman // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:53 PM

Diame is in Newcastle, he’s already in love with Rafa. He has a serious heart condition (Mark Douglas tweeted an excellent article on him yesterday) which makes sense of the Freeman tests yesterday. Today will be the normal medical and I’m sure he’ll sign either later today or tomorrow.

  • 25 Spoof // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:56 PM

why five years, we now have four CB’s and I’m not sure how long the contracts are for the other three, but what happens if one or two of them turn out to be shyte, we could be stuck with them for an age while we run their contracts down, it should have been a three year contract, it soi even if they are hopeless you can get rid of them easier because the contracts aren’t worth as much.

  • 26 Bobbybee // Aug 3, 2016 at 3:56 PM

JP, he enjoys playing billy big boots! He’s told Villa fans to boo Newcastle when we go down there. Oooh, scary stuff, considering they’re talking about closing the upper section because they can’t fill it. That was after saying he wished he had our fans, as we’ve sold nearly double their ST sales. Bit of a loose cannon imo.
