Newcastle have brought in 26 year-old Ciaran Clark from Aston Villa today for a very reasonable £5M and he is Newcastle’s 7th signing this summer and we have now paid out close to £44M gross on those players.
However when we look at the players we have sold like Andros Townsend and Gini Wijnaldum then we have made a profit so far in this summer’s transfer market.
Ciaran Clark – after signing for Newcastle today
And if we sell Moussa Sissoko this summer it’s difficult to see how the net spend this summer will be positive and we are very likely to make a profit during our summer transfer business – so we will still have money to spend in January – if we need to.
In the table below the totals include the fee for Mohamed Diame, although Newcastle have yet to officially announce his signing – maybe later today.

Comment #1For anyone worried about that Villa link with Diame:
Diame is in Newcastle, he’s already in love with Rafa. He has a serious heart condition (Mark Douglas tweeted an excellent article on him yesterday) which makes sense of the Freeman tests yesterday. Today will be the normal medical and I’m sure he’ll sign either later today or tomorrow.

Comment #3On Clark, why five years, we now have four CB’s and I’m not sure how long the contracts are for the other three, but what happens if one or two of them turn out to be shyte, we could be stuck with them for an age while we run their contracts down, it should have been a three year contract, it soi even if they are hopeless you can get rid of them easier because the contracts aren’t worth as much.

Comment #4I’m not complaining! Can’t remember the last time we had as many defenders, all of whom were 1st teamers at their previous clubs.

Comment #5Just watched the interview on NUFC TV.
Interviewer asked him if it was a tough decision to leave Villa after 16 years there.
Clark said “No not really.”
Don’t want to read into it too much, but kind of gives you the impression that there is a bit of turmoil going on at Villa!

Comment #7Good point spoof. But we normally sign our players up to long contracts so it’s harder for other teams to sign them.
Just look at sissoko he signed a 5 or 6 year contract when we signed him. I can’t remember which year we signed him, but If we gave him a 3 year deal, he’d be going for pennies, maybe even for free.

Comment #8In regards to Diame’s “heart condition” it is interesting that this anomaly, as per the referenced article, was identified in a medical during his teen years but has not resurfaced in the next decade of his professional career. It is reminiscent of Demba Ba’s supposed “ticking time bomb” knee problem that has never hampered his career but was used as a justification to not offer him an improved contract commensurate with the goals he was scoring for the club. I understand the due diligence but it seems that some of these medical concerns are out-weighed by the track record of years of professional football without a related incident.

It’s worked for Sissoko but how much have we lost in wages and more importantly not being in a position to sign players because we were stuck with the likes of Xisco, Gouffran, Marveaux, I can see the benefits, anyone could see them in truth but our experience has told us that it is usually counter-productive, especially for a 26 yr old as it’s unlikely that he will improve to such an extent that he is demanding a fee of £15m+, very early twenties and teenagers yes I can understand that to a degree, but not a 26 yr old, for me all your doing is possibly restricting yourself for the future if it doesn’t work out for him.

Comment #10Toonces- You definitely make some valid points. I think clubs just need to be wary. Even with checking up you can have freak occurrences. Look at Siem de Jong. He had a collapsed lung at Ajax, we checked and thought everything was fine when we signed and him. Then boom- happened again.
