First game, new and some very new players leads me to fancy a draw at best.

    Hope I’m wrong though.

  • 2 El Sleeve // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:29 PM

Tiote needs to start if he’s still here. Starts over colback everyday

  • 3 clinath@ed // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:33 PM

    I expect a Draw.

  • 4 lochinvar // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:34 PM

Unlike last season ( and others before ) we need to set down markers in this League and start to accumulate points to put doubts into the opposition even before games start. It’s classic sports psychology.
A win followed by a home win starts the process – so I am sure that’s how Rafa and Lascalles as Captain will lead the team with positive attitudes all round.

  • 5 El Sleeve // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:34 PM

    Sels
    Janmaat-Mb-JL-Anita
    Tiote-Shelvey
    Ritchie-Perez-Aarons
    DG9

Subs: Darlow, Hanley, Dummett, Sissoko, Armstrong, colback, de Jong

  • 6 ToonRich // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:35 PM

    Martoon,

If I could still add my prediction:

    Points: 103
    Position: 1
    MVP: Diame
    TGS: Gayle
    TGS Goals: 24
    Lge Cup: QF
    FA Cup: Round 5

  • 7 El Sleeve // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:35 PM

Left out sterry n Hayden. God, this is like playing football manager!!

  • 8 hibbitt // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:37 PM

    El Sleeve

Anita LB over Dummett is never going to happen

  • 9 El Sleeve // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:39 PM

Thought Rafa said Anita would play anywhere in mid or fb?

    I left out Gamez too!

  • 10 Tsunki // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:41 PM

Martoon – please delete the “Pokat” entry from your Prediction list. I will never post anything under that name, as promised earlier. Just some numbnut hijacking the moniker, I’m contacting Ed about it before that little gem gets out of hand.

  • 11 southeast magpie // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:42 PM

I will be happy to keep a clean sheet, last season our -goal difference was a big factor. Can’t go through the season shipping goals every game. I’m going for a tight 0-1. Attack looks pacey with gayle, perez and arrons.

  • 12 Tsunki // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:44 PM

As I thought some time back, Lascelles will make a good championship captain, those who said he would be too young didn’t bank on the kind of squad Rafa would assemble for the task. Well done.

Martoon, one last thing, take my wacky Hanley to be Player of the Season out and bung Lascelles in would you? There’s a luvvie 🙂

  • 13 Tsunki // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:45 PM

A draw wouldn’t be a bad result. Tough start, and I think rafa will be cautious. No sense pushing the bairns onto the ice and expecting speed skating from the off ha ha.

  • 14 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:49 PM

    Slank

    Charlie

When Diame is fit and ready to play who do you think he will replace ?

If Sissoko is sold he would appear the natural replacement but what if Sissoko isn’t sold ?

    That’s why i’m not a manager…

    Me team for Friday night;

    Sels,
    Dummett, Lascalles, Hanley, Janmaat
    Colback, Anita, Hayden, Ritchie,
    Perez, Gayle

    same starting eleven as Saturday.

If all fit and up and running no bans and Sissoko stays

    My team:
    /means either
    Sels
    Dummettt/Mbambu, Lascalles, Hanley/MBemba, Janmaat
    Anita, Sissoko, Diame, Hayden
    Gayle, Mitro

if going 5 in midfield Colback

DIVEN’T KNA SLANK but Rafa is going to have a hard choice.

Pity this squad was not assembled for last season – would of done alright in the Premiership – better if we had another striker

  • 15 Tsunki // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:55 PM

Don’t care if we stick two goalkeepers on if it means benching Colback. Definitely a player to ditch if we get promoted. Hmm. I’m sounding a bit Toonbotherer about the lad… 🙂

  • 16 The one and Ayoze 17 // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:58 PM

    Sels
    Janmaat-Hanley-lascelles-Dummet
    Hayden-shelvey
    Anita Perez Ritchie
    Gayle

This is how I reckon Rafa might set up tomorrow, with mbemba coming in for Hanley if fit to start. Not sure he’ll start Aaron’s, and Anita’s looked good on the right.

  • 17 Jail for Ashley // Aug 4, 2016 at 3:59 PM

Wow, for the first time in about eight years we can actually post line ups that might possibly have about eight different places from each other. For far too long now the first eleven has virtually picked it’s self bar the managers best headache of whether to pick Anita or Colback or the real teaser of putting in a half fit Taylor for a shell shocked Willo.

  • 18 The one and Ayoze 17 // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:00 PM

I think we might nick it in the second half but will be a close match. Im going for a 0-1 to the toon.

  • 19 beermonkey // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:00 PM

    i think we will win
as for the team i dont know
and its refreshing to say that, when was the last time we couldnt name our starting 11

    Points: 98
    Position: 1
    MVP: Lascelles
    TGS: Gayle
    TGS Goals: 29
    Lge Cup: Winners.
    FA Cup: Round QF

  • 25 lesh // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:13 PM

    Charlie

If Sissoko isn’t sold, he should have to earn his place on merit. Given his whoring himself about, he’s got to learn that Newcastle United’s bigger than him and his lofty ideas!

  • 31 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:20 PM

    Sel
    Anita JL mbemba gamez
    Shelvey hayden
    Ritchie perez arrons
    Gayle

My starting line up. Mbemba may not be fit to start, if not hanley in his place.
Also not sure on the story or where abouts of tioti or sissoko, but I’d drop perez & shelvey to the bench if the formers are ready for tomorrow.

  • 34 toon22 // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:25 PM

Just a thought but if Mitro was going to be sold i would think most prem teams would wait till he has sat out the games he could play in atm.
Think about it,he would have less of a suspension for the start of the prem.

  • 35 pawl250 // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:27 PM

    My team

Sels (seems to be the most played in Friendly games)
    Janmaat – Mbemba – Lascelles – Dummett
    Shelvey – Anita
Ritchie – De Jong – Perez
    Gayle

    1. Darlow
    2. Gamez
    3. Hanley
    4. Hayden
    5. Colback
    6. Aarons
    7. Armstrong

Sissoko / Tiote are going to leave so should not be considered as starters or bench.

De Jong to offer Gayle more physical support.

Mbemba > Hanely if Mbemba is not fit.

  • 36 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:27 PM

Is Siem De Jong fit? Yeah Tiote is well ahead of Colback. If Colback has to start, I would play him left back.

  • 37 Jail for Ashley // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:29 PM

    Marton

Please to be adding my hopeful guess to thy game of predictions.

    Here I go…

    Position: 1st
    Points: 121
    Lc: winners
    FAC: 5th rnd
    PoS: Ritchie
    TS: Mitrovic
    Goals: 34

    😀

  • 43 Toonboy // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:47 PM

Have i missed something? What’s the crack with people saying someone’s having a medical?

  • 44 El Sleeve // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:48 PM

Right, it’s almost 5pm. Which WUM said there was a medical at 4.30?!!

  • 45 Vask // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:51 PM

    El

That sounds like one of Torqtoon’s.

  • 46 Novocastrian66 // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:52 PM

I’ve read Gallowgate flags have 500 flags of various designs for the Huddersfield match. Can anyone confirm that is correct? Also read they’ve raised over £5000. That’s a fantastic achievement.
Well done Alex Hurst and his pals.

  • 47 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 4, 2016 at 4:54 PM

    Toon boy

Lee charnley booked himself in for a check up, & everyone thought a mysterious new player was arriving for a medical.

  • 48 Vask // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:03 PM

    Wey, let’s have a teamy post….

This is how it shall unfold:

    ————Sels————
    Jan–Mbem–JL–Dum
    —–Anita—Hayd—–
    Rich—Shelv—Perez
    ——-Gayleforce——

    Liklihood rating: high.

  • 50 Novocastrian66 // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:04 PM

  • 52 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:09 PM

I went for the draw. I expect to see us playing for a point away from home as a rule. This is a pretty dour squad when you look at it now. Not a bad squad, but The Entertainers it ain’t…

  • 53 Belfast // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:12 PM

    A 20 pence piece.

  • 54 Mag52 // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:12 PM

    Martoon.

Once again, great job in getting another season of predictions together.
If you have a half hour or so, I wonder if you could work out the percentage of those predicting we’ll finish in first place. The optimism appears to be incredible.
At a rough guess I’d say the figure must be more than 90%.
If this is reflected amongst all NUFC supporters, there’s an awful lot hanging on the first dozen or so matches.

  • 55 Jail for Ashley // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:12 PM

Now that Lascelles has been made captain I’d say he’ll be the first name on the team sheet, do you think we should read into anything with Hanley being given the number five instead of Mbemba?

  • 56 Belfast // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:13 PM

    And two pogs.

  • 57 Jail for Ashley // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:15 PM

  • 59 hibbitt // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:19 PM

the big question now is not who we buy but who else will leave ??
still time for another 4/5 to go

  • 60 Belfast // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:20 PM

I wouldn’t have gave anyone my pogs back in the day Jail so fair play.

  • 61 Jail for Ashley // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:21 PM

    ToF,
I think every game will be approached differently. Take the Stoke game last season, Mclaren was so determined to get a 0-0 draw he couldn’t or wouldn’t see the game was there for the taking, I’d take 92 points now by the way.

  • 62 Jib // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:21 PM

    The overrated Frenchman

Thinks he comes across as some kind of sage if he’s constantly negative.

“The Entertainers it ain’t” talking about our squad

I do wish you’d think before opening yer gob!

17 goals for – 4 against – in the preseason – the last game of last season we put 5 past Spurs – 3 when down to10 men !

  • 63 Mister Tuff // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:23 PM

Would have been interesting a poll before tomorrows game – will we win the Championship – and a poll after the final whistle.

Really we have not got a clue how the newly assembled players are going to play/respond.
Might look a bit disjointed perhaps initially – should improve over time.
    Need another striker though.

What happens if we get beat – first four teams we play were all at the bottom last season – we’ve really got to whop them.

  • 64 Kabul Fish // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:25 PM

Jail, Beer – a couple of games dry aint too bad. Nothing for me until I get back in Feb 🙁

I think we will scrape a win tomorrow – could be tough watching at times……

    hibbitt,
I was just looking at the squad on NUFC.com. I’d very much like to see the back of Riverie and see Armstrong and Woodman sent out on loan. What’s the crack with squad size can we just pick from any of those listed or do so many have to be home grown, British etc?

I’m still optimistic and going for a 2-0 win tomorrow. it’s the first game of the season for them too. I think we will want it more and control the game.

I think we have a cracking squad for this league and whilst we won’t win every game I think our losses will be few and far between.

  • 80 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 4, 2016 at 5:43 PM

    Looking at Fulham’s attacking options.

Aluko – Hull City released him even though they had a wafer thin squad. Once scored a belter against us. One of those that rarely turns up, but always has a moment in him, most matches just pass him by.

Matt Smith – 6ft6 target man, been loaned out by a struggling Fulham until late last season. Anyone that height will be a handful, adds further weight to me wanting Hanley ahead of Mbemba.

Floyd Ayite – Don’t know much about him, seems to play as a wing forward rather than ST and he scored 7 in 33 last season in Ligue 1.

They’ve basically lost 36 goals in Dembele and McCormack from last season. That’s 36 goals from a team that came 20th.

As long as our lot continue to ride this wave of optimism whist maintaining their focus, we will win.

Hopefully a commanding display, start as we mean to go on.

Maybe marra, but the thing about Obi is he only ever plays the same way so the opposition know what they are going to get from him.

His pace may have caused a couple of teams problems, but on the whole I think getting rid was the best decision for everyone. Wish him all the best for his future.

  • 102 toon kk // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:07 PM

Going off Martoon’s prediction poll there’s alot of fans getting a little carried away IMHO, although I expect us to have a good season it’s not going to be a walk in the park by any means. We have a lot of new players which will take time to gel.
But I’m looking forward to the season and being able to compete makes it far more exciting tbh.

  • 103 Jail for Ashley // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:10 PM

    HWA,
Is that where he ended up, I’m sure he’s got enough money to ensure he never has to kick a ball again as well

  • 104 Mag52 // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:10 PM

Obertan was capable of moments of brilliance.
Unfortunately they occurred far too infrequently. We’re well rid.

    fb,
He probably wouldn’t have took a one year deal anyway so your definitely right. It’s mental that such an insignificant player like him will never have to work or do anything again and players like Keith Robson who appeared involved in a couple of big transfers is working in an airport telling lads to put their earplugs in.

  • 110 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:26 PM

On the basis we’re shit away from home and especially in London, I’ll predict a 1-0 defeat. We need to start showing we can consistently pick up resultson our travels before I predict anythkng else.

Dissing The Ginger Pirlo. Unbelievable. What’s next? Calling Rafa an average manager?

  • 114 GeordieTwo // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:34 PM

There was only the one moment of brilliance Mag52 mate. That was when Gabby delivered the vindaloo on time for the team meeting…..

  • 115 GeordieTwo // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:38 PM

If we don’t get at least 50 goals from the Magnificent Three (Gayle, Mitro, Perez) we may be in trouble. Don’t worry though. They’ll ride into town with their guns blazing. If we get another decent striker it just adds the icing on top….

  • 116 welshgeordie9 // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:38 PM

Can’t see us signing anymore players unless someone leaves although I’m not bothered if that’s it for the transfer window, thanks to Rafa is been one of the best if not thee best.

  • 117 GeordieTwo // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:39 PM

We will be selling welshie. Have no fear of that. And we will get another two players. Rafa has been giving me some inside info (actually I may have heard it on BBC).

  • 121 lochinvar // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:44 PM

Tiote can’t start as he and Sissoko aren’t travelling yet alone be on the bench , rather suggests that Rafa wants to keep them from the squad until fully clear on their future

  • 122 GeordieTwo // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:44 PM

What’s that leshie mate? We can’t sell welshie. He’s currently working for the club undercover in Wales. Apparently they have some decent players over there. Harrumph….

  • 124 GeordieTwo // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:46 PM

That’s it lochinvar mate. They will be gone soon enough. And Rafa will have a nice sack of dosh under his bed to pry some more decent players loose. I’m relaxed about the whole transfer window.

  • 125 GeordieTwo // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:47 PM

I rattle about everywhere Blackley mate. Nobody will escape. My grand plan is to drive all bloggers mad. Or convert them to an Eastern religion and send them all to Tibet. I haven’t decided which yet.

  • 126 lesh // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:47 PM

Rafa’s playing a cute game with the squad numbers. There’s obviously still time for comings and goings before the full squad’s registered with whoever. What’s the deadline for registration?

  • 127 welshgeordie9 // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:48 PM

The only players Left that could go are

Rivière which there’s been no bids
    Gourffran the same
    Janmaat the same
Sissoko possibly juventus (think deep down Benitez wants him stay)

Either way there’s no need to sign anymore players.

  • 133 Jail for Ashley // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:53 PM

    Blackas,
When, for the last six years we have had a captain who has deliberately had time off for FA cup third rounds knowing they are being thrown anyway and is not only happy with that but prepared to take the money and carry on then it has to make you wonder about the mentality of the whole team in the past. Our new captain encapsulated it all when he got sent off against Everton “no one gives a fcuk” and why would they. Told they are just a commodity and our game plan is to avoid EL qualification why would any of them been bothered. Tim Krul laughing and joking with Defoe after his goal, I hope Rafa watched that and that’s why Sels is here.

  • 134 Mag52 // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:54 PM

    Geordie Two.

Seriously though, that control and cross of a ball he really shouldn’t have reached, for Wini to head it powerfully into the net in, was it, our opening fixture last season ?, will linger long in my memory.
Sadly so much of his work was, let’s say, less spectacular.

  • 135 GeordieTwo // Aug 4, 2016 at 7:55 PM

No they’re thinking of him as the next villain for Bond leshie. They’re just going to call him Mr. BadPun. He tortures you to death with his humour. Horrible…..

Good point. We seem to be getting rid of the chaff. I’ve liked Lascelles from very early on. I’m hoping he and Hanley will form a formidable partnership. I can’t remember when we last had an old skool centre back. We’ve had too many clowns who turn their back on it. As for Krul, I don’t rate him. I don’t think we missed him at all.

Well Martoon I hope Tsunki and Pokat don’t fall out over this. 🙂

  • 147 GeordieTwo // Aug 4, 2016 at 8:12 PM

That’s very nice bloggery at 138 Blackley mate. Krul is a decent shot stopper though. His ball distribution is horrible. Elliot is much better. Tim could use a change of scenery. We need to really get to work on the chaff though. No decent squad needs chaff. Saylor was chaff, Colo ended up being chaff, Obertongs was chaff. I suspect De Jong is chaff. And Rivi. And definitely Thauvin. Very chaffy.

  • 148 Belfats // Aug 4, 2016 at 8:20 PM

    Belfits,
You have an admirer, I thought Pushy and Sack had perished in a travelogde inferno while “chekin” out the gym. I heard Pushies cigar had set fire to the weights bench that sack Llambias was trapped beneath while heaving 10kg dumbells. Pushy was just to cool to be panicked by the alarm and just stood their smokin in his gown while the flames engulfed him?

  • 154 beautifulmind // Aug 4, 2016 at 9:18 PM

Assuming no more movement in the transfer market the strongest 1st 11 imo would be
    Krul
    Janmat Mbemba Lascelles Dummet

    Sissoko Mbia Colback Ritchie

    Mitrovic Gayle

Id be happy with that line up in the Premier league
