Hanley, Hayden And Colback Start – Armstrong On Bench

fulham-fcnufc emblem

Rafa Benitez has just named his first team ever to play in the English Championship in this Newcastle’s very first game of the season – and Rafa has names a team in which 5 players will be making their debuts for the side..

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Matz Sels; Daryl Janmaat, Grant Hanley, Jamaal Lascelles (c), Paul Dummett; Isaac Hayden, Jack Colback; Vurnon Anita, Ayoze Perez, Matt Ritchie; Dwight Gayle
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Jamie Sterry, Chancel Mbemba, Jesus Gamez, Jonjo Shelvey, Rolando Aarons, Adam Armstrong

It seems that Grant Hanley impressed last Saturday and he keeps out Chancel Mbemba who is on the bench and Isaac Hayden also gets a start.

The two holding midfielders are Jack Colback and Issac Hayden, with Vurnon Anita again starting on the wing to the exclusion of Rolando Aarons and Paul Dummett starts at left-back – as expected.

Another local lad – Jamie Sterry is also on the bench tonight with Armstrong.

Rafa says Newcastle have done their homework, but that it will be a very tough game tonight:

“We have a lot of respect for Fulham. We have seen some of their games, they beat Crystal Palace 3-1 in pre-season, so they are doing well. They have a good manager, they know what to do, and it will be tough,”

“I don’t see an easy game, for sure, and I think we have to be sure that we approach every game with a lot of respect for the teams, because it will be more difficult than people are expecting now.”

“We have done our homework, and we know it will be very difficult to beat them.”

“Fulham will approach this game with confidence, because they are doing well. They don’t concede too many goals, they play good football,” he said.

“They like to play from the back, but they can play with a big man up front, so they have players between the lines with ability.

“I don’t think that they will be scared – they will have a game plan, and they will follow the instructions of their manager. It will be very tough.”

This will by no means be an easy game for Newcastle.

Three in four fans still expect us to win this game tonight.

Set up for high energy, high pressing it looks like, particularly as Rafa suggested that’s why he likes Anita.

Shelvey not even a sub is worrying, either means a knock or his new found professionalism and application to improve was short lived.

Hopefully we smother them and take control.

    Taco,
Anita seems to have a very good pre season. Out wide he will offer cover and be neat and tidy which could help Janmaat get forward.

Looking forward to seeing Hayden. He was very much a bit part for Hull last year, but the experience could have been invaluable for him.

We look lightweight in the attacking third, but movement and intelligence coupled with the pace of Gayle and the slightly more direct Ritchie. Should be interesting.

Anita had 2 good games at RM in the freindlies, so not worried about that. Surprised Hanley gets ahead of Mbemba but i do trust rafas choices so again not worried. Colback should be fine next to hayden.

Think of Fulham as Corporal Jones did the fuzzywuzzies – they don’t like it up ’em!

The important thing is that you and your comrades enjoy the game and hopefully a good win. But, most importantly, be safe!

Ah, they’ve updated it then on the official Titter feed, because initially he wasn’t on there. Come to think of it there was only 6 names, so obviously just an error.

The first half against Vitesse with this line up was dynamite the front 3 were deadly and Anita and Colback could press all over knowing Hayden is behind them !

Once the game opens up and slows down Shelvey and Aarons on to finish the game off

As expected Fulahm go with all 3 of their forwards.

Quicker 2 flanking the bean pole. Glad Hanley has been selected ahead of Mbemba, much better equipped to deal with a giant.

Although there are bits of the jigsaw missing, if you think we have mitro to come back in, and diame to come in, then our squad is actually in pretty good shape.

    Nowt wrong with the line-up.

The bench’s got all options covered to either shut the shop if we’re on top or go all out for a win if we’re on the back foot.

Sounds like a strong team. Pleased to see Hanley instead of Mbemba and no Shelvey. However, I’m still going for 1- 0 to Fulham. The only stand out player for me is Ritchie. Will be delighted if my initial assessment based “on paper” is badly wrong.

In a 4231, the wide players are not so much “wingers” imo. Yes, they do provide the width, but they have more license to come inside. RM and LM rather than RW and LW. A small difference, but i think it suits the likes of Anita.

i cant deny that anita played well in preseason or that he was a hero at the end of the year filling in at back, however, i would think we could be a little more agressive. Im all in on hayden, We should have the skill at this level to not need t play two DM’s so if anita has to be out there, rather have him playing the 2nd Mid sitting being perez/gayle and the wingers
