Hanley, Hayden And Colback Start – Armstrong On Bench

Rafa Benitez has just named his first team ever to play in the English Championship in this Newcastle’s very first game of the season – and Rafa has names a team in which 5 players will be making their debuts for the side..

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Matz Sels; Daryl Janmaat, Grant Hanley, Jamaal Lascelles (c), Paul Dummett; Isaac Hayden, Jack Colback; Vurnon Anita, Ayoze Perez, Matt Ritchie; Dwight Gayle
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Jamie Sterry, Chancel Mbemba, Jesus Gamez, Jonjo Shelvey, Rolando Aarons, Adam Armstrong

It seems that Grant Hanley impressed last Saturday and he keeps out Chancel Mbemba who is on the bench and Isaac Hayden also gets a start.

The two holding midfielders are Jack Colback and Issac Hayden, with Vurnon Anita again starting on the wing to the exclusion of Rolando Aarons and Paul Dummett starts at left-back – as expected.

Another local lad – Jamie Sterry is also on the bench tonight with Armstrong.

Rafa says Newcastle have done their homework, but that it will be a very tough game tonight:

“We have a lot of respect for Fulham. We have seen some of their games, they beat Crystal Palace 3-1 in pre-season, so they are doing well. They have a good manager, they know what to do, and it will be tough,”

“I don’t see an easy game, for sure, and I think we have to be sure that we approach every game with a lot of respect for the teams, because it will be more difficult than people are expecting now.”

“We have done our homework, and we know it will be very difficult to beat them.”

“Fulham will approach this game with confidence, because they are doing well. They don’t concede too many goals, they play good football,” he said.

“They like to play from the back, but they can play with a big man up front, so they have players between the lines with ability.

“I don’t think that they will be scared – they will have a game plan, and they will follow the instructions of their manager. It will be very tough.”

This will by no means be an easy game for Newcastle.

Three in four fans still expect us to win this game tonight.

    Attack toon attack attack!

  • 3 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:51 PM

Set up for high energy, high pressing it looks like, particularly as Rafa suggested that’s why he likes Anita.

Shelvey not even a sub is worrying, either means a knock or his new found professionalism and application to improve was short lived.

Hopefully we smother them and take control.

man, cut out the negativity! first match of the season!

even if we lose all signs point to good things this year and hopefully beyond

  • 7 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:52 PM

    shelvy on the bench

  • 8 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:53 PM

    Taco,
Anita seems to have a very good pre season. Out wide he will offer cover and be neat and tidy which could help Janmaat get forward.

Looking forward to seeing Hayden. He was very much a bit part for Hull last year, but the experience could have been invaluable for him.

We look lightweight in the attacking third, but movement and intelligence coupled with the pace of Gayle and the slightly more direct Ritchie. Should be interesting.

  • 9 martoon // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:53 PM

Hail – Shelvey IS on the subs bench!

Surprise, surprise the same team that started against Vitesse Arnhem 🙂

Anita had 2 good games at RM in the freindlies, so not worried about that. Surprised Hanley gets ahead of Mbemba but i do trust rafas choices so again not worried. Colback should be fine next to hayden.

    Hwtl, Hwtf

Think of Fulham as Corporal Jones did the fuzzywuzzies – they don’t like it up ’em!

The important thing is that you and your comrades enjoy the game and hopefully a good win. But, most importantly, be safe!

  • 17 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:55 PM

    Martoon

Ah, they’ve updated it then on the official Titter feed, because initially he wasn’t on there. Come to think of it there was only 6 names, so obviously just an error.

  • 18 clinath@ed // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:55 PM

Lilongwe…a counter attacking set up you think?

  • 19 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:56 PM

The first half against Vitesse with this line up was dynamite the front 3 were deadly and Anita and Colback could press all over knowing Hayden is behind them !

Once the game opens up and slows down Shelvey and Aarons on to finish the game off

  • 20 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:56 PM

As expected Fulahm go with all 3 of their forwards.

Quicker 2 flanking the bean pole. Glad Hanley has been selected ahead of Mbemba, much better equipped to deal with a giant.

  • 23 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:57 PM

Although there are bits of the jigsaw missing, if you think we have mitro to come back in, and diame to come in, then our squad is actually in pretty good shape.

  • 24 lesh // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:57 PM

    Nowt wrong with the line-up.

The bench’s got all options covered to either shut the shop if we’re on top or go all out for a win if we’re on the back foot.

  • 25 colwell // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:58 PM

    Anita RW? 2 DM’s

strong defensive part to the bench but shows why Rafa wants a few more

  • 26 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:58 PM

A youthful bench. Arma, Mbemba, Aarons and Sterry. Even Darlow for a keeper.

  • 27 lesh // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:59 PM

    Jib’s right again…. Hey ho

  • 28 colwell // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:59 PM

As Rafa’s the boss he’s probably tuned Anita into an awesome Winger.

  • 29 Oleg G // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:00 PM

    Where is Mitrovic???

And good that Sissoko is not in the plans.

  • 30 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:01 PM

    YCMIU,
Mitro up top, with Gayle switching to a wider attacking role. Mouthwatering.

  • 31 clinath@ed // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:01 PM

    Are you serious Oleg?

  • 32 colwell // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:01 PM

Fulham have a pretty decent side with alot of pace

  • 33 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:01 PM

Sounds like a strong team. Pleased to see Hanley instead of Mbemba and no Shelvey. However, I’m still going for 1- 0 to Fulham. The only stand out player for me is Ritchie. Will be delighted if my initial assessment based “on paper” is badly wrong.

  • 34 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:02 PM

    Colwell

In a 4231, the wide players are not so much “wingers” imo. Yes, they do provide the width, but they have more license to come inside. RM and LM rather than RW and LW. A small difference, but i think it suits the likes of Anita.

i cant deny that anita played well in preseason or that he was a hero at the end of the year filling in at back, however, i would think we could be a little more agressive. Im all in on hayden, We should have the skill at this level to not need t play two DM’s so if anita has to be out there, rather have him playing the 2nd Mid sitting being perez/gayle and the wingers

  • 37 geordiesteve520 // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:03 PM

  • 42 NUFCPaul // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:04 PM

colwell – Anita has been pretty good playing RW in the pre-season games. I don’t see why this would be a surprise with him playing there today.

  • 43 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:05 PM

Small pitch, not a very good opposition technically = high energy team to swarm them, forcing errors and turning over of possession.

While it wasn’t the team I picked, fully understand why he’s gone for that selection. Could be very fruitful!

  • 44 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:05 PM

I CANT FCUKING BELIEVE THEY ARE ASKING THIS DIDDLYWHACK ABOUT WHAT WE CAN DO!!!

McClown, the most important change is YOU, you blithering c0ckwomble.

  • 45 Mister Tuff // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:06 PM

    3 -1 to the Toon.

Bit of a dilema here – we have Jib (historically) slagging off KK and Rafa praising him.

Who is right – think I’ll go for Rafa.

  • 46 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:06 PM

Poor team. No Sissoko. Colback and Dummett shouldn’t be starting.

  • 48 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:07 PM

Mbemba should be playing. Going for a 0-0.

  • 49 NUFCPaul // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:07 PM

MBemba has only just recovered from an injury, so maybe Rafa doesn’t want to chance anyone, and very wise too. Starting with Hanley makes sense.

  • 50 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:07 PM

    Taco

I am refering to McClaren being a pundit.

  • 51 Mister Tuff // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:08 PM

Taco – agree re Armstrong. If he gets on in the next 4 games he has to make an impact or he will probably not get another look in – in the short term.

  • 52 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:08 PM

A bit surprised that Armstrong’s in ahead of Riviere.

  • 53 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:09 PM

  • 54 NUFCPaul // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:09 PM

Kets – so glad you’re not the manager. Starting with someone who’s just had an injury and chancing them breaking down again? You’re a genius.

  • 55 toontaff2 // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:11 PM

I hate to say it, but I said the starting 11 on Saturday would start tonight. So whilst still getting it right, for once, 1-3 tonight! Toon winning away, obviously.
As the season goes on, my predictions will usually be wrong, but while I’m on a run of 1 I’ll get the score right and Hayden as player of the season!
Anyone else watching Steve McBrolly on Sky 1? Smoggie Beagrie and Ian Holloway! I have NOW TV, £6.99 for 24 hours, cost £15 at Tesco for the NOW TV box, including 2 day passes! More beer money left!

  • 56 NUFCPaul // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:12 PM

Kets is probably confused about Rafa not starting in goal today. He’s definitely our best keeper.

  • 57 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:12 PM

Game on! Won’t be the cake walk that some people think it’ll be. This could be close.

  • 115 NUFCPaul // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:55 PM

Janmaat with a silly foul out wide. We need to cut that out. Balls getting whipped into the box from those kinds of free kicks terrify me.

  • 117 NUFCPaul // Aug 5, 2016 at 7:58 PM

So close to being a penalty for Perez there. That’s the kind of runs in behind we need to see from our forwards.

So…its evident we need a CREATIVE CAM….we are a bit static..

    need new LB for sure..

  • 122 BandB // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:02 PM

Someone was saying earlier that Colback and Anita was too defensive. It was always likely that Anita would be asked to get forward and cross the ball in a different role from that we have seen him in. I’ll only the second half, but Anita and Colback won’t play as two defensive mids. Rafa has seen the Anita can cross, play quick balls in and around the area and has a goal in him.

  • 123 Kabul Fish // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:02 PM

    better

  • 124 JP...from The Rock // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:02 PM

Colback rushing his passes. A few wayward passes gifting possesion to Fulham.

  • 125 danishmag // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:03 PM

any links that works lads? 🙂

  • 126 NUFCPaul // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:03 PM

Probably would have given a red if it hadn’t been so early in the game.

  • 127 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:04 PM

    Anita very poor so far.

Giving it away or being easily dispossessed every time he gets it.

Not good when you have a marauding Janmaat behind you.

  • 128 manxpie // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:04 PM

hayden doing well so far but we are bypassing midfield far to much

  • 129 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:05 PM

Again Anita gives it away cheaply.

  • 130 davis_toons // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:05 PM

Someone midfield needs to get hold of the ball.

Is like PING PONG Ball…flying here and there..So fast..
Shelvey surely cannot fit in unless he can dictate the play which he cant yet or never will.

  • 131 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:06 PM

daivs, we would be way better off right now with shelvy over anita.

  • 139 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:09 PM

ayoze first touch crap two times in a row. Lac is lofting the ball but its actaully working!

  • 217 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:35 PM

Well, the line-up indicated high energy and pressing, but that didn’t happen, which makes me scratch my head on why that selection was made.

Anita and Colback should be pulled for Aarons and Shelvey.

  • 218 NUFCPaul // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:36 PM

Keep your chins up lads, it’s only the first half of the first game. An away fixture in London is always tough for us historically. We’ve been denied a solid penalty which would have changed the game. We’ll see better football in the first home fixture for sure.

  • 232 Newcastle for alltid // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:37 PM

Fulham moves the ball around better. We need to get a man in to stop them building their attacks from the deep midfield position.
We also need more guts, more dynamic play. It`s too predictable and slow right now.
AND Anita needs to go off.

  • 233 Oleg G // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:37 PM

‘If anyone here thought we will be perfect, in any game, specially the first games, you are delusional.
Relax. We will lose some, we will draw some, in some we will concede before we will score, in some we will score and keep a clean sheet etc.

We don’t look great and they look worse. But they used one chance and scored.

That was as bad as we played most of last season. No threat,no pace poor defending ANITA as a fcuking RM.

This is Fulham we should at least have tested their keeper by now. Why blast the ball up to Gayle and Perez???? Perez has the touch of Bambi. Absolutely no threat from the right very little from the left. Fcuk Rafa time to earn your money.

    Same shut different season

    _______Hayden_Colback
    Ritchie___Shelvey__Aarons
    ___________Gayle

    Take off Perez and Janmaat.

  • 258 JDdubai // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:42 PM

Too many people were over confident yesterday and earlier today.

First game of the season, away from home after relegation, everyone saying how we are going to walk the league. It was all set up for us getting knocked back down to earth.

Reality is no team will lie down for us this season so best get used to having to scrap our way out.

On the match, Anita playing RW isnt working, he is a CM or FB. Plus i
Him being there means Ritchie is moved away from his natural position. Ritchie cutting in with Janmaat overlapping is perfect, shouldnt have changed it.

No need for Colback and Hayden, shelvey and one of them will do, would prefer Hayden to remain.

Aarons needs to be on with Ritchie switching sides.

Perez poor, poor touch, getting muscled out time and again. Needs to improve his touch and speed up half a step.

If you have Anita, Perez and Colback all offering little attackingwise, 3 of your main 5 attackers, then Gayle has no chance.

    Shelvey for Colback
    Aarons for Anita
Could even try Arma for Perez if he diesnt improve in the next 20 mins, wouldnt lose anything.

Not the end of the world but too many of our fans need to get a reality check. I did put money on fulham to win though just to cover any result, decent odds too.

  • 259 NUFCPaul // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:42 PM

Holloway talking sense at halftime. McClaren talking shite.

  • 260 jimiley // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:43 PM

Loads of possession along the back four counts for nothing. We have created nothing and Fulham have had two shots on goal. They deserve their lead. Perez cannot keep the ball. He looks and plays like a boy amongst men. Anita is also crap. The rest look solid but hardly league winners. Rafa needs to pick a more aggressive and attacking team. Otherwise his honeymoon will not last very long. Big test for him in the second half. The team looks so lethargic and do not seem up for it.

  • 261 Jib // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:44 PM

  • 262 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:44 PM

Not a good feeling about this season…must be honest.

Static sloppy…Not sure how we are going to get pace on the ball and speedy play along the deck just don’t see it with this group of players…

  • 263 davis_toons // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:44 PM

The Captain himself is not even making his marker. He got block off by a trip by Grant

  • 264 Mister Tuff // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:44 PM

Telling point as already sated – not even one shot on goal. – or even towards the goal.

  • 265 Spoof // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:44 PM

Well that was dreadful, what I would like to know is what exactly is our plan when it comes to scoring, first 10 mins it was the long ball over the top for Gayle to run onto but when Fulham sussed that and defended slightly deeper we were out of ideas, Aarons for Anita who was dreadful is a must.

  • 266 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:44 PM

Colback has got to come off offering nothing at all Hayden can do the job of protecting on his own probably Anita has to come off as well

Shelvey and Aarons have got to come on and then Richie has to go right wing we are lacking moves from the middle but Shelvey playing passes should open them up

Feel sorry for Gayle he has had no service at all

  • 267 moonsault // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:44 PM

How on earth McClown is sitting at skysports studio and commented how should we defended the corner? Ridiculous

  • 268 anthc // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:45 PM

Perez still on his jollies, Anita’s distribution terrible. I think some of the lads are trying too hard.
Second half, plenty of time yet!

  • 269 colwell // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:45 PM

If he’s still here next game Sissoko HAS to start we are crying out for someone that can drive the ball forward.

Colback,Hayden,Anita far,far to defence minded 2 should play not 3.

  • 270 ShirebrookToon // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:45 PM

Perez needs to come off. He’s getting knocked off the ball far to easily.

  • 271 benjohnsen // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:45 PM

How I miss a type like Nolan or Barton. Need to start playing our strengths not Fulhams.

I’m convinced that Colback, Dummett and Anita are not good enough and never will be. They are a big part of us failing last season. Too many bad players. Fact.

  • 272 davis_toons // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:45 PM

  • 274 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:46 PM

  • 275 Jib // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:46 PM

It looks like the Toon fans are going to have all the goals scored at their end.

  • 276 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:47 PM

Funnily enough we are lacking someone to make runs from midfield to score like a Wijnaldum or De Jong but both probably wont play for us this season!!

So we need to buy someone that can score goals from midfield !

  • 277 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:47 PM

Anita Colback and Hayden completely devoid of creativity. Gayle and Perez looking lightweight. Sels unconvincing. Zonal marking at fault for the goal. Unlucky to not get the penalty but is wasn’t nailed on. Ritchie lively. ToF an early favourite to win Martoon’s comp.

  • 278 davis_toons // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:48 PM

yes …an older Diame hopefully still as good. At lease he should have the Drive to carry the ball forward.

  • 279 benjohnsen // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:48 PM

I have to say that I still have full confidence in Rafa. A draw at Fulham will after the season look like a good point. We drew our first match the last time we were down.

  • 280 colwell // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:48 PM

Janmaat has hardly ventured forward, Fcuk me he would be attacking the best teams in the prem last season against a w@nk Fulham he’s scared???

  • 281 toon kk // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:48 PM

We definitely need Aarons on asap

  • 282 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:48 PM

Best part of Anita’s game is his acceleration and ability to press quickly and continuously to make the opposition falter, that’s why I thought he was selected. Expected us to be all over them to try and force mistakes early on and sap their confidence, but we mostly sat back when they had it.

  • 283 Belfast // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:49 PM

  • 288 Toon Tang // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:50 PM

Perez has been turd so far. How can a pro have so many balls bounce off him and so many first touches turn into about 9 touches. Hayden been class so far, well impressed with that lad.

More info as I receive it…

  • 289 Munster Mag // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:50 PM

Sorry, but rafa has gone too defensive again, as I feared he would with two defensive midf and anita out wide. He needs to get Ritchie on the right and we need shelve in midfield. Very poor defensive stuff. Come on Rafa sort it out. More poor marking from corner too against the obvious threat. Very poor. On a posurive, Gayle looks excellent but as I said here before, we need a powerful pacy centre forward , big time.

  • 290 GeordieTwo // Aug 5, 2016 at 8:51 PM

we lack technique and pace badly!
the worrying thing is that even a world class manager like benitez cannot see that you can’t win with players like anita, dummett, colback, shelvey..

we must be the best team in the world in training!
only decent ones today were lascelles, hanley, hayden, ritchie and gayle. and maybe sells
all the others ones (including janmaat) ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH

  • 422 Oleg G // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:42 PM

Ritchie is our most promising player.
Did a lot of good in a game that wasn’t a good game for us.

We still need time to get it together as a team, so no worries there.

Another striker and another winger is definetly a good thing to have. Our options up top are a bit dull.

And I want to see Arma more. He looked good.

  • 430 jimiley // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:44 PM

Keeper made one save against a team which conceded bucketloads last season and nearly got relegated. Same old bollocks from the Toon. I hear the training ground has been repainted. Perez and Anita are too small and we need a proper man leading the line not a load of midgets who think the ball is a hand grenade. Bad start but a reality check. We will not win this league.

  • 431 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:45 PM

1-0 as predicted. Reasons being we’ve got no really outstanding players. Gini, Townsend and Sissoko might have told a different story. Other clubs have decent players. We’ve not shown how we can get goals. We’ve never had a good mentality on our travels especially in London. In fact our away mentality has been piss poor for years.

  • 432 colwell // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:45 PM

  • 434 JDdubai // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:45 PM

First game only so lets not snap at each other just yet.

Love Rafa but for me he got the team wrong tonight. Cant have Colback and Anita in the same midfield, limits the attacking play too much.

Ritchie should be RW always, him and Janmaat will do fine.

    Aarons Lw.

Perez, i think im in the minority with him, same as last season. For all the nice little touches he does, i really dont think he will make it. So inconsistent, disappears too much, no pace, weak shot. Cant play as a lone CF, cant play wide, and doesnt look great as the 10. Touch poor tonight, only1 game, but he looked half a step slow in his thought too.

Overall disppointing but lets not have a meltdown.

Rafa, signings, just the first game of the season, and still people here bitching by the dozens.

    What is wrong with you?
    45 games to go.

You just had your heads spinned by the media.
People thought we will walk through and jump back.

It will be hard. No one will open their legs for us. If anything, they will play that much harder.

  • 436 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:45 PM

    Shite.

1st half no urgency as if we didn’t realise 3pts were at stake and Fulham were just gonna allow us to work on our tactics.

2nd half much better, but still too little too late.

Age old problem of wanting to ease into a game. It’s the Championship and yes we do have better players than most, so go toe to toe from the beginning, take risks. None of this feeling your way into a chuffing match.

Set out with a one track mind that we’re better and impose ourselves. Tonight we did the opposite. Allowed Fulham to dictate tempo 1st half and only started to play when we had to.

Oh and call back any of those clubs that bid for Perez and ask if they still want him. Dunno why I predicted him as top golascorer, especially if we’re going to pretend he’s an AM all season.

    Next match midfield must be:

    ________Hayden___Shelvey
    _____________Diame

Lads new rules on hand balls in the box is it has to be deliberate, doesn’t matter where the hands are…..it has to be intentional!! Just putting that out there.

Competitive game the true colours show, we’ve bought some serious championship players in my opinion, it’s what I initially thought and continue to think. Gayle didn’t do anything, we were predictable all game. Ritchie only new signing with class so far…..still early days

  • 440 expatmag // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:45 PM

Some if you guys need a reality check.

First game of the season was always going to be tough. This is a whole new team and with more new players to come in. It will take time for them to gel and if we are really relying on a ref giving us a dodgy penalty, we have a long way to go..

This season could be more about how we finish the season rather than hiw we start.

    My God, that was terrible.

Ritchie good, everyone else…..Not so much.

Hanley, new keeper and Gayle all looked like they’ve not improved anything- first game and all but there were some serious mistakes by the first two.

Colback, Anita (Right wing?!?), Perez, Dummett were seriously poor.

Colback….I don’t get it, how does he keep getting contracts? His passing is not what I expect from a midfielder, if he was a CB doing a shift in mid then I’d forgive it and understand it more!

They didn’t look ready for the match.

Never mind, on to the next one. Would like either Thauvin to play or get another winger/ attacking midfielder in.

  • 461 Spoof // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:52 PM

We were far too conservative from the start, Rafa for me needs to be more aggressive, Hayden did nothing special but he did protect the defense which is his main job, so drop Colback and put Shelvey in to give us more going forward,, Perez is to lightweight but I expect Diame to replace him and he won’t get out muscled, and if Rafa ever picks Anita again when Aarons is available then god help us.

  • 462 GeordieTwo // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:52 PM

This is a Fulham side that finished really low down last season and more importantly they lost there 2 best players from last season…..Dembele and McCormack!! That’s why I’m critical, they would have prepared with mccormack in that squad.

That’s the reality, don’t think anyone is being unrealistic with how poor we were.

I did say it wouldn’t be a cake walk this league, hopefully that kills some of the arrogance on here as well

players like colback, dummett, anita and shelvey are bench players at best!
shelvey is way too slow for the pace of this league, he’ll never make it anywhere..
dummett and colback lack technique and a right foot
anita is too lightweight and gives the ball away too much.
janmaat the same, too many mistakes for a defender..

we need an AM, a winger and a striker or we’re fled

  • 467 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:53 PM

Well Fulham just about deserved the win. I thought they played quite well. Maybe unlucky not to get a penalty but that would have glossed over a dire performance. Ritchie clearly our best player. Absolutely nothing else to enthuse about; unconvincing in defence, woeful in midfield, impotent in attack.

Paul Dummett; 6 couple decent challenges …one horrible one. too many punts forward
Isaac Hayden, 5 for me his movement and defensive positioning were poor. had some decent touches touch
Jack Colback; 5 not his day, too many overly ambitious passes
Vurnon Anita, 5 abyssmal first half, decent second Ayoze Perez, 5 good positioning, horrible touches
Matt Ritchie; 8 unlucky not to score, catalyst of most decent attacks
Dwight Gayle 4 the invisible man..did very little other than having some hold up play

    Our toon
Most have said we’d walk this league with over 100 points, it just ain’t gonna happen. It’s a very tough league and we’re not outstanding by any means.

  • 482 swemag // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:58 PM

    We will win this league.

Agree mate. No need to panic. One poor set piece defensively cost us dearly. One terrible decision by ref and another couple poor decisions. Some missed chances, not that many were created.
Thought Ritchie, Janmatt, Arma looked good. Ayoze needs to get toughened up quickly. Haden, Anita (better in 2nd half), Colback gave ball up way too often.
    Missed Mitro badly…

Dummet plays a backpass even in his dreams..even if hes arse is put on fire..

  • 485 lochinvar // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:59 PM

Seemed to rely on giving the ball to Janmatt too may times and the Fulham defence knew tha
Diame and or Sissoko needed to boss midfield
Incompetent ref and blindsman doesn’t help

  • 486 9 // Aug 5, 2016 at 9:59 PM

Good grief. The League Table (which tells no lies) shows that Fulham are rubbish. Since then, they have lost their only two goalscorers, which should make them a pushover for a half-decent Championside side. They won at a canter, NUFC bloomin’ awful!

The only upside is, personally, this time I wasn’t at Craven Cottage. What rubbish we have served up there over the years……………and still it goes on. Utter, utter rubbish.

  • 487 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 10:01 PM

Well that was predictably unpredictable NUFC. We looked utterly toothless going forward, and pore to an error or caught out of position at the back.

Whilst I think Colback has good attributes, you can’t ask him to be the guy spraying passes in a defensive midfield pairing. A ginger Pirlo he is not. Having said that, Shelvey was poor once on.

Gayle had some nice touches, but mainly on the halfway line where Fulham allowed him to, didn’t threaten at all.

Lascelles at fault for the goal, Hanley made some poor clearances and a few errors that we got away with, but add Mbemba and Clark to those 4 and I’m still happy with that as a Championship defence.

Mitro’s suspension looks far more costly after that.

Still, early days, we don’t often win on the opening day and there is still players to come in and Rafa says more signings to come. A wake up call for all those who thought we would walk it mind, particularly given Fulham are a short price to be in the bottom half.

Fulham – played well -eh eh.
They were rubbish and we were worse.
Tiki taka -playing it around in our own half – very nice – not much point though.

Reality check this evening will hopefully prod them to get a decent forward, AM and winger. Still 3 weeks or so of the transfer window open to get quality in.

Anita, Colback Dummett – all pretty poor.

    “Apart from the goal”!!!
What the f*** do you think winning football matches are all about?

    Unbelievable!

    Are you totally mad, son?

  • 490 Spoof // Aug 5, 2016 at 10:03 PM

    Young magpie

Drop Dummett, are you for real, he was by far the best defender for us, Lascellas cost us the goal, Janmaats suicidal back pass which lead to Hanley’s over committed challenge should have cost us a pen and you would drop the only decent one we had, ffs

  • 491 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 5, 2016 at 10:04 PM

    Same old Same old
    Shite
huffed and puffed but could still be playing until next week wouldn’t of scored
Lack of movement off the ball
lump it long to dwarfs – Armstrong, Gayle, Aarons up front second half when will they learn
    cannot take free kicks
cannot defend free kicks and corners
beaten by a better team – wanted it more – better movement off the ball – lucky to get away with a 1-0

might be a blessing in disguise because if we play like that we will be nearer the bottom than the top.

Gonna be a long long season and sadly if we do not change you can kiss promotion out the window

Goal- where was the marking, where was the players on the post for the corner.

More annoyed, angry, disappointed than many a game last season

  • 492 jimiley // Aug 5, 2016 at 10:06 PM

Fans blame the ref when actually the team was crap. Yes we should have had a penalty but Perez would have taken it and passed it to the keeper. We had seven thousand fans at the game and they saw their keeper make one save. That is the bottom line. We were crap and deserved nothing. We need some men in the forward positions. Tired of watching boys getting brushed off the ball and always going to ground.

  • 493 Laurent Robert The Legend // Aug 5, 2016 at 10:09 PM

As long as dummet remains our so called best defender we’re going nowhere..he was horrible coz only few attacks where fulham looked good 2nd half were from their right hand side..says it all really..hes like taking defense minded players to the next level..should be dropped..

  • 494 only one bobby robson // Aug 5, 2016 at 10:19 PM

I’m disappointed tonight as the three players that were terrible were janmatt Anita and Perez! These are players who think they are better than what they are if Rafa can sell these three for combined £35 million they have to go! Can’t believe I eve Rafa took colback off and I think giving lascelles armband wrong decision like me giving gazza armband for Italia 90!
