Kevin Nolan had been at Newcastle less than six months when we were relegated to the Championship six years ago – and Kevin couldn’t even get his place in the team after he joined us for £4M from Bolton in January, 2009.
Although Nolan wasn’t the captain during the Championship season in 2009-2010, he was one of our key players who showed outstanding leadership that allowed us to get straight back to the Premier League with 102 points and 30 wins in May, 2010.
Kevin has been talking about Rafa Benitez today on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, and what some Newcastle players have told him about the new gaffer.
Kevin Nolan – former Newcastle captain
This is what Kevin has said about the former Liverpool manager:
“He’s recruited well. Looking at it, they’re going to be strong. They have fantastic support,”
“Speaking to the boys up there, they love what Rafael Benitez is doing up there.”
“Hopefully they can turn that corner and get back to what we had a few years ago.”
We are heavily favored to do very well this season in the Championship, but you never know what’s going to happen – especially after the last two disastrous seasons.
Kevin had a huge impact on Tyneside, but he only stayed for two and a half years before he left the club for West Ham United and Sam Allardyce – his former manager at Bolton Wanderers.
Kevin played 91 games for Newcastle with 30 goals – including that famous hat-trick in the 5-1 pounding of Sunderland in October 2010.
And to think that was only five weeks before Chris Hughton was fired as the manager.
