Rafa Benitez Praises Fantastic Kevin Keegan

3:16 pm, Friday, August 5th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 130 Comments

There’s an excellent interview that Ian Holloway had had with Rafa Benitez today for Sky Sports in what was Ian’s first ever interview as the interviewer.

It’s a fascinating interview with one manager asking the other the right questions from a manager’s viewpoint.

And it was at the very end of the interview that it was interesting when Kevin Keegan’s name was brought up.

kevin keegan98

Kevin Keegan while Newcastle manager

This is how former Blackpool manager Ian Holloway ended what was a really terrific interview today with Rafa Benitez:

Ian:

“I am going to finish it here and I’m going to say I hope it goes as well as it seems it will and you deserve it.”

“Already my taxi-driver told me to tell you he loves you as much as Kevin Keegan.”

Rafa (laughing):

“Kevin Keegan – everybody is talking about Kevin – I think he was an amazing player and a fantastic manager.”

“He’s a legend here, but what he did he did, he’s already done that.”

“So I have it still to do, but I am really pleased because the fans trust me,  but I want to give them something back.”

Ian:

“He ‘s a genuine person and I think everybody has seen that you are.”

Here’s the full 18 minute interview.

Love or loathe Keegan, but when he was our boss(first time) we played some of the finest football this land has ever seen. Shame we never won a cup or title to ice the cake, but it was wonderful to watch.

I am almost in tears at the end of that interview.

    “I like to win”, excellent.

  • 4 giimps // Aug 5, 2016 at 3:57 PM

Keegan tapped into the region and brought the area int the world of football, it’s just a pity he was a little short sighted with regards to the legacy, if he’d built up the academies and reserves we could have had the same for decades.
Rafa is starting his journey and hopefully we as a club/region can reap the benefits of his knowledge, ability and passion for decades ……it’s his project now and he’s started it well….. Hwtl

    Weep not my fellow fan but study the word of the Lord;
    Revalations 21: 3-5.
3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. 4He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.” 5And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.”…

Cast out evil thoughts ye sinners, do not be tempted by painted Jezebels and false prophets (Ian Toon & Jib).

  • 6 Mister Tuff // Aug 5, 2016 at 4:01 PM

    ooops slight ammendment:
    Rafalations 21: 3-5

  • 7 Lindisfarne // Aug 5, 2016 at 4:01 PM

    [[thumbs up]]

  • 8 Moonraker15 // Aug 5, 2016 at 4:03 PM

We will never forget the great Keegan years and if Rafa can get this “juggernaut ” rolling again we are in for exciting times!
    C’moooon!

  • 9 Jib // Aug 5, 2016 at 4:06 PM

Although not a religious person – the blasphemy inherent in the simpleton’s (Mr Tuff) post makes me feel strangely uneasy.

Great interview between Holloway and Rafa, there.

I’d been meaning to do it for a while, but I contributed to the Gallowgate Flags page today. I saw Ed’s £100 donation on there as well which is great.

It is a very good thing to donate to if you were thinking about it.

Waving the scarves should never have died down in the first place. Here’s a chance to revive it.

This is the link to their GoFundMe page. I know some of you have done it already.

  • 11 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 5, 2016 at 4:18 PM

For a number of years fans were told no flags were allowed to be waved, sticks removed etc. (Happened to me before) Seeing the club back this fan movement is a good thing.

It’s a lot better than the Cockney Mafia out, Pinocchio banners that were (needed) about in recent times and forcibly removed in some cases.

Really looking forward to the game tonight!

To be fair to yer man, Jib was knocking the fans more than KK…..
cough cough ….. and the team’s performances too…
but it is a strikingly ‘cockeyed’ misanthropic comment..

    Jib // Jan 10, 2016
In a cockeyed kind of way Keegan (Febuary ’92 to January ’97) was the worst thing that could have happened to NUFC .
He gave a whole generation of supporters an utterly inflated sense of the importance , deeds , and place of their club in the world of Football.
He won nowt and doesn’t even have the best winning percentage figures (Chris Hughton at nearly 60 % does).
He got very lucky and put out attacking teams that were good to watch , that would get hammered today.
His legacy is a bunch of supporters with ideas way above their station.

  • 56 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 5:57 PM

Fulham have Aluko, a Hull City cast-off despite them being desperate for players. Matt Smith a 6ft6 bean pole and a lad bought from Bastia in Ligue 1 called Ayite, got 7 in 33 last season, but I think he plays as a wing forward.

Don’t know how they set-up, but can imagine a 4-3-3/4-5-1 with Aluko and Ayite either side of the target man.

Ed – good to see that you will maitre d’affaires of this sage blog for a while yet. Congratulations on the latest update.

  • 89 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:35 PM

Quick panic over! Just realised I’d been looking at Supersports South African schedule and it was on SS7, but Malawi doesn’t have SS7. Luckily it is also on SSSelect2, and my local has that. Almost a terrible start to the season!

could see that arma has made the trip to fulham.

  • 92 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:36 PM

One of my favourite openers in recent memory was our 4-0 demolition of West Ham at home back in SBR early 00s days. Particularly memorable because Lua-Lua got a couple and treat us to some of his acrobatics.

Would love a similar win tonight with Gayle easing into the no9 with a couple.

  • 93 MAUTITOON // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:37 PM

    plus scheteve out benitez in,lol

  • 94 Tsunki // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:37 PM

…and no Mr Tuff, I didn’t check spelling or insert circumflexes because I don’t care today 😀

    …Start By for……ACTION!!!

Cue thunderbirds intro… well – what will it go like tonight? Damp squib? Crushing defeat? Glorious victory? We will soon have our chance that’s for sure. 😐

  • 95 Belfast // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:38 PM

    Attack toon attack attack!

  • 96 Tsunki // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:38 PM

Stand by that should have been. I’m less than diligent atm.

  • 97 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:38 PM

    Mauti,
A standard frican centre forward – not in a racist way – but a lot of them can do the spectacular, but other than the very elite, they often lack composure and snatch at chances. Every youth coach I know across the continent complains about exactly the same issue.

Not sure why mind, it isn’t a skill thing, as they have that in abundance, and they can finish calmly sometimes. Possibly a coaching thing, or a lack of decent level football and the fact pitches are often poor so they try to take the shot on as early as possible so it doesn’t have a chance to bobble.

  • 101 Belfast // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:40 PM

Dennis will be in the building…

  • 102 lukes26 // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:40 PM

I reckon with Janmaat and Sissoko still around we’ll line up:

    janmaat mbemba lascelles Dummett

    Sissoko Colback

    Ritchie Perez Aarons

    Gayle

Fulham arent very good & we should be dominating possession. Wouldnt be too surprised if rafa actually switches quickly to 4 3 3 …but he strikes me as reflexively conservative

  • 103 Tsunki // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:41 PM

Jib that was when you were 7

  • 104 MAUTITOON // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:41 PM

    Lilongwe Geordie
hope he is not a bad omen tonight for us,i’m soo much excited that i’m getting nervous now.

  • 105 clinath@ed // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:41 PM

    Sissoko cannot start. The consequences…..

  • 106 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:42 PM

    lukes,
Surey Sissoko won’t start? He only came back to training on Monday, and I’d imagine didn’t train with the squad until Weds at the earliest. I reckon it will be Shelvey or Hayden in where you have Sissoko.

  • 107 Tsunki // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:42 PM

Dennis will be here, no fear.

  • 108 ShirebrookToon // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:42 PM

Is it time yet? Dragging like fcuk

  • 109 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:43 PM

    Mauti,
Likewise. I’m waiting for the lineup to be announced before heading to the pub to watch it. Hopefully we will win, or I’m in for a shedload of stick and abuse later on!

  • 110 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:44 PM

I think it is a coin toss between Hanley and Mbemba, particularly as Mbemba had a knock last weekend. I know he was only left out as a precaution, but still…

  • 111 Belfast // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:44 PM

I don’t think you’ll see him starting this month never mind tonight.

  • 112 ShirebrookToon // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:44 PM

Newcastle team: Sels; Janmaat, Hanley, Lascelles, Dummett; Colback, Hayden; Anita, Perez, Ritchie; Gayle. #nufc

  • 121 colwell // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:48 PM

Anita rw that is why we are desperate for another winger

  • 122 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:49 PM

    lukes,
I’d imagine if he is involved it would be from the bench. Would be interesting to see the fans reaction to him if he does come on mind – and what his response is.

  • 123 ShirebrookToon // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:49 PM

So we have to listen to that fcukin clown tonight. Just when I thought we were rid of wally brolly

Anita had 2 good games at RM in the freindlies, so not worried about that. Surprised Hanley gets ahead of Mbemba but i do trust rafas choices so again not worried. Colback should be fine next to hayden.

    Hwtl, Hwtf

  • 130 lukes26 // Aug 5, 2016 at 6:52 PM

seems like it might be 4 3 3

colback hayden anita in midfield is very defensive
