There’s an excellent interview that Ian Holloway had had with Rafa Benitez today for Sky Sports in what was Ian’s first ever interview as the interviewer.
It’s a fascinating interview with one manager asking the other the right questions from a manager’s viewpoint.
And it was at the very end of the interview that it was interesting when Kevin Keegan’s name was brought up.
Kevin Keegan while Newcastle manager
This is how former Blackpool manager Ian Holloway ended what was a really terrific interview today with Rafa Benitez:
Ian:
“I am going to finish it here and I’m going to say I hope it goes as well as it seems it will and you deserve it.”
“Already my taxi-driver told me to tell you he loves you as much as Kevin Keegan.”
Rafa (laughing):
“Kevin Keegan – everybody is talking about Kevin – I think he was an amazing player and a fantastic manager.”
“He’s a legend here, but what he did he did, he’s already done that.”
“So I have it still to do, but I am really pleased because the fans trust me, but I want to give them something back.”
Ian:
“He ‘s a genuine person and I think everybody has seen that you are.”
Here’s the full 18 minute interview.

Too right mate. Knocking a few Prem teams out the cups this season, aswell as gaining promotion would be a hell of a season lol

Comment #45I wish time would get a wriggle on! Just want the game to start now, or at least the line up released! 1st game of the season away from home, half expecting a draw, but can’t help but think we should win this without too much fuss.
Good old Supersport means I’ll be able to watch it here.

To be fair to yer man, Jib was knocking the fans more than KK…..
cough cough ….. and the team’s performances too…
but it is a strikingly ‘cockeyed’ misanthropic comment..

In a cockeyed kind of way Keegan (Febuary ’92 to January ’97) was the worst thing that could have happened to NUFC .
He gave a whole generation of supporters an utterly inflated sense of the importance , deeds , and place of their club in the world of Football.
He won nowt and doesn’t even have the best winning percentage figures (Chris Hughton at nearly 60 % does).
He got very lucky and put out attacking teams that were good to watch , that would get hammered today.
His legacy is a bunch of supporters with ideas way above their station.

Comment #56Fulham have Aluko, a Hull City cast-off despite them being desperate for players. Matt Smith a 6ft6 bean pole and a lad bought from Bastia in Ligue 1 called Ayite, got 7 in 33 last season, but I think he plays as a wing forward.
Don’t know how they set-up, but can imagine a 4-3-3/4-5-1 with Aluko and Ayite either side of the target man.

Yeah, let’s hope so! Would be nice to see 11 players actually caring on the pitch for once, and working hard to keep the shirt, rather than knowing that they can be as lacklustre as they want without worrying about being dropped.

Comment #68Yes Average take that back, Jib was in no way maligning the great K K (although he got himself statted up in knots comparing win percentages without context to leagues played in) .
No, jib was merely slagging off the fans, you know, those sorry pathetic misguided bunch of losers who pack St James year in year out with nothing to show for it. How dare they aspire to bring any good? The nerve some fans have. 🙂

Aye things have calmed down at the Toon, no more drama for the media to lick there lips at, so they have to resort to sniedy remarks and unfair reporting to try and keep us and the club in darkened corner of the football world.
Thing is people have stopped laughing at us now.
