Report – Newcastle In For Premier League Defender

12:52 pm, Saturday, August 6th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 28 Comments

There is a report today that Newcastle are one of four clubs trying to sign 21 year-old Manchester United defender Paddy McNair – and it’s not the first time we have been linked with this player this summer.

The news is being reported by Sky Sports chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol,  but we have our doubts after Newcastle have just signed Aston Villa center-back Ciaran Clark.

Paddy McNair – Newcastle interested

Here’s the tweet:

Rafa Benitez will have been very disappointed with the Newcastle performance last night when we lost 1-0 at Fulham – and the goal that beat us was though some terrible defending by Newcastle.

Apart from conceding the goal the Newcastle defense was OK, but it was the same old failings as we didn’t take the few chances we had in the second half and let in a sloppy goal – result – defeat.

With Jose Mourinho now in charge at Manchester United, Paddy has been told he can leave Old Trafford this summer.

Initially it was going to be on a loan deal, but recently Jose seems willing to let the young defender leave on a permanent basis,  which should interest Benitez.

Maybe Rafa needs to bring in even more defenders like McNair, since he can always use them in the full back positions and even in defensive midfield.

The main thing Rafa seems to want to do is to bring in good young players who have good potential and then he can  work with them in coaching to make them into better players.

Paddy can play at right back, center-back and defensive midfield – so he is quite versatile.

Ciaran Clark who we just signed last week can play left back, center-back and defensive midfield –

The Red Devils youngster had an excellent season under then manager Louis Van Gaal back in 2014-2015 making 18 Premier League appearances, but Paddy played in only 8 league matches last season.

There’s no doubt he’s very good young player with great potential.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

The first was a stonewall penalty. The second could have been justifiably given.

Take it on the chin Jail and take the jammy ones when they come.

    For a bit of perspective…

Last 5 League Champions at start of season:

    Burnley – 4 games without a win (1 in L.C.). Lost 2 drew 2.

Bournemouth – Lost first game at home, won next 5 between 2-4 goals.

Leicester – Unbeaten in first 6 games (2 in L.C.)

Cardiff – Lost first game (cup) then won, drew, and lost in subsequent games.

Reading – Drew first game, then lost 6 in a row (1in L.C.)

At the start of the season, mixed results should be expected. Long term, they were still champions.

BandB and Jail – we all know these things even themselves out over the course of the season, don’t we?

  • 5 Slank // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:08 PM

I thought your team was either the most inspired selection I have ever seen or just plain daft having Sels and Janmaat both in goal, which I’m sure must be against the rules, until I saw your second posting !

LR32 – no, no, no. Don’t you understand? If we lose the first game and play badly then that means we’re absolutely, definitely NOT getting promoted. Don’t you know anything about football? You should try reading some of the very wise comments left by our blog experts. That’s what I’m doing. I’ve learned so much from them after yesterday.

    Good post LR 32

its frustrating to lose the first game, but like people have pointed out its a long old season and we’ve got a lot of new players, so it will take a while to get them playing as a team.

  • 9 BandB // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:15 PM

I said yesterday morning that some of the most hectoring optimists would be tearing out their hair in despair if we were losing 1-0 at half time.
Not a prediction, but to quote another poster, “blatantly obvious.”
Get a grip of your emotions, lads and stop flopping about like wet kippers.

He’s only trying to help sooth those tired and emotional bloggers whose whole world had been shattered by that devastating slaughter one nil defeat that has left us languishing at the bottom of the table with only 45 games to play.

  • 11 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:18 PM

    Ayoze, sure. Thanks.

Just had a look to see if it would confirm what I already suspected. It did.

How we’ll do, who knows, but the panic button is under lock and key for a number of months yet.

It would be ungracious and unfair of us to deny the floor to the doubting Thomases and Jeremiahs. This is their momentary stage of glory, for them to strut and fret their hour. We all know who they are, perching like carrion birds waiting for the victims foot to falter. Let them have it. I’ve no doubt there will be a few players still to fit into this team and a few more toughening bouts before they get into their stride. I expected a stuttering first 6-10 games, a patience testing time. A bit too testing for those of weak bladder and limp intellect unfortunately.

  • 13 Slank // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:24 PM

Don’t understand why Ed thinks we need this lad as we already have 4 centre backs, 2 left backs and 2 right backs without taking into consideration some in the reserves.

Another centre forward would be better.

  • 14 NUFCPaul // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:24 PM

Slank – we need to get Rafa out NOW! If we leave it too late we’ll be doomed. The new manager needs at least 44 games to sort out these insane mess.

  • 15 Slank // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:28 PM

I bet that taxi is hovering around the gates of SJP as we speak waiting for the call from the great and the good mister personality Lee Charnley.

  • 16 BandB // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:31 PM

How long do you think it is before someone writes that and means it?
We aren’t going to walk this league, but we will be promoted.

  • 17 bettyswallocks // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:31 PM

In the cold light of day and after watching a re run of the match, I have come to the conclusion that the poor performance and subsequent defeat was Ashley’s fault.

  • 18 colwell // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:33 PM

I can’t understand why we can use the excuse of having new players takes time etc when Fulham had a completely new defence playing for the first time and overall more players making debuts???? And beat us.

We still have the same problems we have had for years, poor defence, non existent CM’s and overall too slow all over the pitch.

Anita RM,Dummett offering nothing going forward with Colback and Hayden having no forward threat at all this was such a defensive team. Punting the ball up to Perez and Gayle WTF is the point??? Rafa got this one seriously wrong.

  • 19 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:34 PM

If I might have a Ketsbaia moment, I think colback, perez and dummett are not good enough, they are vestiges of what was wrong with us last season. Full backs should stay there, and we need wingers who specialise rather than knacker themselves tracking back to defence most of the game. We need a creative and play-breaking midfielder, so Anita has no place except as a game-running-out sub. Armstrong is not up to this level yet so plenty of late cameos for him at best. Above all we need a vital midfield, as it is now it’s absolutely non-existent, produces nothing and invites constant pressure. Over to you, rafa…

  • 20 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:39 PM

It’s just one game. We will definitely improve. Can expect us to get into rhythm within the next 5 games.

And then we’ll gradually start oiling the Newcastle machine and we’ll go steamrolling the league.

    A little patience is required.

  • 21 NUFCPaul // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:40 PM

BandB – it’s much too soon for that. September isn’t for a few week’s yet.

  • 22 Slank // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:40 PM

When we win against Huddersfield those same doubting Thomases and Jeremiahs of weak bladder and limp intellect will have metamorphed back into boundless unreal expectations salivating in orgasmic delight and prophisiding our walk to promotion.

  • 23 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:41 PM

But the excuse that players need to gel is nonsense. Fulham had 7 or 8 debutants. And looked already gelled and raring to go.

  • 24 NUFCPaul // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:42 PM

Tsunki – it can only truly be a Kets moment if you were suggesting replacing those players with Messi, Ronaldo and Bale. And then suggest we could get them all for less than 10 million.

  • 25 BandB // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:42 PM

    It won’t happen Paul.
We will beat Huddersfield, there’ll be a round of revenge killings on the blog, and everyone will feel much better.

  • 26 Yo-yo // Aug 6, 2016 at 1:42 PM

Every side in the Championship knows we are favourites and will be busting a gut in playing a holding game and then trying to beat us on quick counter attacks. We will have to adjust tactically to take account of that and learn how to get quicker quality ball into the box and tighten up on the finishing, as well as getting back quickly. Losing goals at set pieces has to be a no-no.

Anybody thinking Rafa has been signing EPL top ten players has certainly had their eyes opened now.

There were only two serious mistakes

    1. Ref – not giving the first handballa a pen
    2. Lascelles – not man marking and giving the free header that got them their goal.

    Don’t panic !

  • 27 Munster Mag // Aug 6, 2016 at 2:01 PM

Message to many more defenders do u need man???

  • 28 Spacepyramids // Aug 6, 2016 at 3:26 PM

I’m moving to Republic go Georgia in a couple of weeks for work. Wondering/hoping someone on the blog lives there???? A long shot I know.
On last night- wasn’t surprised at our poor start to the season what with the lofty expectations from the media and me included, a poor London record and up against a very capable manager. But, very disappointed to see all the long balls: the first only a couple of minutes into the game. They weren’t even well executed. I mean we don’t have a Drinkwater, a Kante or a Vardy. Hope we can sort out the midfield and play with more assuredness, confidence and skill. And Perez! He started so well with us, being brought into the team earlier on in his NUFC career than expected. Thought he added a touch of class but his development seems to have stalled and is going backwards. Hope Rafa can sought him out. See quite a few people don’t think much of Hayden. It’s just a hunch but feel he will be good for us. No expert on these matters though.Still have faith as it’s early doors. Play-offs maybe more realistic than automatic promotion though. See we are not in the first round of the League Cup – pity.
