Striker Is Still Said To Be In Rafa’s Plans

There was a report in the Mirror yesterday that Rafa Benitez wanted to sell Aleksandar Mitrovic before the end of this summer’s transfer window.

But the local papers are reporting they don’t think that’s true and that Mitrovic is firmly in the plans of manager Rafa Benitez.

We knew Mitrovic was settled on Tyneside when he recently had a son with his partner, and of course he’s also at the club of his hero – Alan Shearer – and at the end of last season he said he hoped he was going to be part of the promotion push this season.

It seems Iranian businessman Farhad Moshiri who now owns 49.9% of the Toffees, wants to spend some big money this summer and they are interested in Mitrovic.

But Newcastle are not looking to sell Aleksandar and he doesn’t want to leave Newcastle and the lad’s a popular player too with the fans.

What Rafa is looking for in the next three weeks is at least one new striker who can score goals and a winger who can also score some goals for us.

We looked too much like the last two season on Friday night at Fulham, when we offered very little threat in the final third of the field.

So rather than sell Aleksandar, he’s going to be key to our promotion push, which got off to a rocky start in the first game, but we will improve game by game under Rafa Benitez.

However Mitro will still have to keep control on himself during games and we cannot have him being sent off as he was twice last season.

We lost the game at home to Arsenal 1-0 after he had been sent off, but we didn’t suffer too much in the final game against Tottenham when we were 2-1 ahead when he was red carded with just over 20 minutes to play.

We won that game 5-1.

But it’s an area of his game that Aleksandar must improve – but the lad can also be a big player for us this season.

We also have to remember the Serbian International is still only 21 years old.

Get Shearer in once a week to work with him. Surely the pair of them would love it.

We went into the Fulham game with a shocking away record from last season and performed as if suffering from a hangover. Our best two players were for me Ritchie and Janmaat. Particularly so when Ritchie was switched to the right side in the second half.

Janmaat is not a right winger but is a better option overlapping with pace than Anita who lacks pace, physicality and a range of passing. Anita is a squad player and not in my starting team. Janmaat has caused many to question his defensive capabilities but he performed well and made his presence felt.

Of more concern is the fact that teams can double bank against us because we are not a threat down the left where Dummet is uncomfortable going forward and his lopping forward passes are all too predictable.

Abel Hernandez would be a decent signing. Can’t see it happening though. Hull have already lost one key player to us, doubt they’ll let a second one go.

Just a thought…. would you consider swapping Anita and Janmaat in thier starting positions? Anita performed better at RB than Janmaat did last season, and I would argue our defence looked better when Janmaat was out injured. It certainly conceeded fewer goals per game.

jimmysmith @1 – I recently had a stadium tour and the guide told us that at the moment Shearer is persona non grata at NUFC – although he didn’t know why – we can speculate. They would not even allow the Shearer statue to be on their land which is why it is on the site of a previous public toilet which is owned by the council!

You couldn’t MIU – I have to say I am not a fan of Anita- it’s all about opinions. I watched him on TV playing in Holland and he often played in a sweeper type role where he was given space and time on the ball. He has been a major disappointment in the EPL where his lack of physicality are highlighted. The frenzied pace in the Championship does not bode well. As a full back I would prefer Gomez or indeed Janmaat with Ritchie in front. They look a good pairing. We just need to replicate on our left flank/ side.
