Diame Makes His Debut – Shelvey, Mbemba, Aarons Start

2:01 pm, Saturday, August 13th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 367 Comments

nufc emblemHuddersfield_Town_F.C

Rafa Benitez has just named the Newcastle starting eleven for the important game against Huddersfield Town this afternoon and he gives a debut to Mohamed Diame and also Chancel Mbemba returns to the side to partner captain Jamaal Lascelles at center-back.

But Matt Ritchie is on the bench and that’s probably rotation from Rafa – and Matt will be back against Reading on Wednesday night.

We should probably get used to maybe at least three changes when we are playing two games a week and we have five games over the next two weeks.

Newcastle(4-2-3-1): Matz Sels; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles (c), Paul Dummett; Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey; Vurnon Anita, Mohamed Diame, Rolando Aarons; Dwight Gayle
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Jesus Gamez, Ciaran Clark, Jack Colback, Matt Ritchie, Ayoze Perez, Adam Armstrong

It’s the usual 4-2-3-1 formation and Ciaran Clark is on the bench and the former Villa man could even get a run out depending on how the game is positioned in the second half.

Having Shelvey and Diame in the side will give us a lot more power and a lot more creativity up front than we had against Fulham in our first game and Sissoko as expected – is not included in the squad.

We must win our home games this season.

This is what Rafa has said about today’s game:

“Because of the fans, because of the stature of our Club, we know that every game will be more difficult.”

“But if you want to go up, you have to adapt to these situations.”

“We know that Huddersfield will give everything, so we have to do the same and hope that we are better than them.”

“We know that we have to improve from Fulham and the main thing is make sure that every time we are improving a little bit and that we are much better.”

“Then, we can approach games with the confidence that we can win.”

17 in 20 fans think we will win this game this afternoon.

Hope so.

Anita at RM again ffs Sissoko not even on bench why not play Janmaat RM and Anita rb he was our worst player last game.

  • 2 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:05 PM

Quite like how most of the under performing players have been dropped for other players although shame Richie is not starting ahead of Anita!

Would not surprise me to see Diame on the wing as he has played on the right a few times

  • 3 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:05 PM

Surprised richie is dropped to the bench. Maybe he is saving him for mod week?

  • 4 expatmag // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:06 PM

Strange decision to drop Ritchie who was our best player last week.

No Hanley in the 17 either……interesting

  • 5 msk21dec // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:06 PM

Better team than last week but id have anita rb and ritchie right wing. Never liked janmaat

  • 6 Mister Tuff // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:07 PM

    Ritchie has a slight injury.

  • 7 SUTTY1978 // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:07 PM

If Sissoko or Ritchie were playing instead of Anita, the team would look a lot stronger. Glad that Hanley isn’t playing, too many hoof balls from him so far.

  • 8 Mister Tuff // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:08 PM

Need Shelvey to hit some decent through balls – clearly pace in the attack but no “muscle”.

  • 9 John Tudor // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:08 PM

    same old same old

  • 10 jazzyp // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:09 PM

How is that a better team. Take 3 players out and it’s all out defend ffs.
Rafa has to change his principles for his formations, especially at home.
Again where is the creativity in the line up ??

  • 11 Blofal // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:09 PM

It looks more like a 4-3-3 to be honest.

    ———————Selz
    Janmaat – Mbemba – Lascelles – Dummett
    —–Hayden —- Shelvey —- Anita

If Ritchie has an injury, why is he even named on the bench then?

  • 14 Spoof // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:12 PM

This may sound a bit ott, but I hope Anita gets injured as he is a handicap to us but for some reason he seems to be a Rafa favourite, why do manager’s have to have favourites, Pardew with Gouffran was bad enough but if we have Anita being Rafa’s then that is even worse.

  • 15 SUTTY1978 // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:14 PM

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a team with FOUR defensive midfielders playing.
Remember Pardew saying we were going to go all out for the win against Liverpool at home, he then played three DM’s and we lost 6-0

  • 16 Spoof // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:15 PM

    Blofal

It looks like a 4-2-3-1 to me with Anita on the right wing, hopefully he and Janmaat will swap places as Janmaat cannot defend but he does attack and ask questions whereas Anita always takes play backwards and offers very little going forward, I doubt that it will be the case but if Anita is RB and DJ is RW then for me we would be stronger.

  • 18 Blofal // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:16 PM

Well I really rate Aaron Mooy for Huddersfield (being a Melbourne Heart fan myself) so I can understand the extra defensive midfielder 😛

  • 19 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:16 PM

Is it verified that Ritchie is injured?

Still like to see Gamez in for Dummet, especially at home. Just for the fluidity in attack.

Anita better not be on the RW.

Hanley must be pissed off! His defensive partners mistake for the goal and he gets dropped completely.

Howay Shelvey, prove your doubters wrong and command the game along with Diame.

Dont be silly. Wishing injury on our players is a disgrace. You should be ashamed.

Anita is a tidy little player but probably more adept at full back. He has never complained and just got on with his job. Pity Sissoko didnt have Anitas attitude

  • 23 Blofal // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:17 PM

Spoof I get what your saying but last game Colback was the worst for that. He didn’t win the ball back once and didn’t play a forward pass for the entire game.

Oh dear rafa had a huge love of rotation at liverpool partly because of his love of playing with tactics. Ritchie must be fit if on the bench. Anita?? Like him but rafa loves him. At least shelvey is in but he needs to up his game. Despite nearly a full team being purchased we still lack a winger and a striker. I reckon diame is an inspired signing. If sissoko aint sold ritchie might be in trouble. Strange team from Rafa, again.

  • 26 WWSBRD // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:18 PM

    Can’t please everyone I suppose

Ritchie is hurt so Rafa isn’t risking him, not sure why sissoko isn’t there instead or Anita or Perez I suppose but the best thing about our club right now is Rafa so I will be behind him

I reckon 2-0 win if TonyToon pops up

I just hope that our tactics are more attack minded than what they were last week, the team selection is once again very conservative but hopefully the tactics aren’t, delighted that Aarons is playing mind as he could be a real boost for us when trying to break them down.

  • 30 Pat On The Heed // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:19 PM

  • 31 Munster Mag // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:20 PM

If ritchie has a light muscle injury that makes more sense. An early goal would help no end.

No shame mate, he and Colback are dreadful and do nothing to help our course but if for some reason they continue to get picked then I hope for a helping hand, get them out of the team, I don’t care how it happens just get them out so we then have a better side, why feel shame for wanting that.

  • 37 NezzaNUFC // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:24 PM

Anita was the only player who got his crosses in to a player last game.

Seems like the old Liverpool 4-5-1 formation that Rafa had there,it converts to his style of play with 4-2-3-1 in attack and/or 4-1-2-2-1 or flat 4-5-1 in defence.

Does anyone do their research on Rafa before he joined?

  • 43 NezzaNUFC // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:28 PM

Why is everyone having a dig at Anita?

It must be because he crossed the balls to his players and came tracking back to help out the defence but hey he didn’t score so he’s shite!

  • 44 Brian Pinas // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:29 PM

Just thought I’d point out that Anita’s versatility allows Rafa to switch between 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 without having to make any substitutions.

I think we are all too accustomed to a more one dimensional tactical approach. I for one trust Rafa to get the job done. I don’t expect this one to be pretty but I reckon we’ll get 3points.

Oh and hopefully an improvement in attitude today, a bit of oomph! Last week we looked complacent for 60mins.

Hull City have proven today, like Leicester did last season, commitment and drive are no1. Talent means nothing without.

Remarkable that they won with 13 fit senior players, no manager, protests, players in positions they’ve never played before.

Anita has consistently been one of our best players this year.

He was played on the wing last week because he’d had a decent game there the week before in a friendly.

He’s not a winger and hes as good as anything we have in central midfield

Anita is a very tidy player. I wud prefer him than janmaat who i think is slow and not great defensively. It depends how he is used. Rafa got it wrong last week , end of. Lets hope for some flair and a bit of risk taking. Championship teams can be pressured into losing the ball. Lets hope we press them all over the pitch and get an early goal

  • 64 SUTTY1978 // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:46 PM

    NUFC for sale.
It would be a fair point except for he’s not one of our best players, he’s not one of the best in CM, he’s had half a good game at RM once.
I’d be happy with him playing RB, he was exceptional there at the end of last season but in general he’s a bit crap and ineffective.

  • 65 Pat On The Heed // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:46 PM

Anita and Colback are just this week’s punch bags. Presumably a bad game for Lascelles or Diame, and Spoof and friends will be wishing injuries on them next week. They have a similar approach to political opponents in Putin’s Russia.

  • 68 Griff-toon // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:55 PM

I think Anita can play better, we have all seen it. I think he is a player that needs confidence to do it and one of the players Rafa thinks needs our support. Glad he is getting a run of games to get to that lvl.

I think Diame, Shelvey, Anita and Aarons will generate opportunities for Gayle and Perez. Huddersfield prob had a plan against Richie. Thats out the window

  • 69 lesh // Aug 13, 2016 at 2:55 PM

    Jazzy

I read yesterday that Huddersfield are much more attack minded, since they got their new manager who was a coach under Klopp. They tend to go all out to score more than the opposition (Keeganesque?).

Under those circumstances, one would expect Rafa to field a defensive but counter-attacking formation.

This could be a tricky game – unless Rafa’s managed to tighten our defence, particularly from set pieces.

    POTH

Colback and especially Anita are not good enough and imho they should not be playing, yes I accept that my comment was wrong and I apologise for that, but I genuinely do not want Anita playing for us as I cannot see what he brings to the side, I don’t like some of the other players as well, as with most fans there are some we like and some we don’t, Janmaat for example is not a favourite of mine but at least he can offer something, not defensively as he is poor but he can be an outlet when going forward, so hopefully even with the players that I don’t like I just hope the set up can get the best from them, but with Anita I don’t see what he offers, all he does is run around a lot and do nothing, last week there was one cross field pass which found Rithie which was within the first ten minutes, but that was it, you look at Shelvey and as soon as he gets the ball his head is up looking ahead of him with the aim of attacking, Anita’s natural instinct is to look behind him and pass backwards so we can then build an attack slowly, that’s too continental for us and it doesn’t work for us, and through no fault of his own he just isn’t big enough to be a strong holding midfielder, remember him and Colback last season as our holding pair, they really were awful.

So with that what does he offer, the answer is nothing so that is why I don’t want him in the side.

I am aware there are no streams so no doubt if you are listening to an audio outlet. You will therefore not be able to see what is described – particularly if jargon is used.
If you get stuck give me a shout and I’ll explain.
For example if you hear “what a fantastic chip” – this does not mean the game has suddenly stopped and the players are now having a competition making “French fries”.

No need for any thanks consider it a pleasure.

    Why knock Anita ?
He always works hard for the side.
He has a pretty decent range of skills.
    He is versatile.
He has had his fair share of MoM as well as bad days.
He’s a good squad player with a decent footballing brain.

  • 172 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 13, 2016 at 3:53 PM

I’d say it’s looking like too soon for Lascelles captain, as was Shelvey.

I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS IVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR THE PAST 4 YRS OR SO. ITS NOT THE PLAYERS AT FAULT ITS THE CRAP MANAGERS AND THEIR BLOODY OBSESSION WITH 4231. WHY ARE ALL THESE USELESS MGRS OBSESSED WITH 4231. 442 IS THE BEST FORMATION FOR OUR SQUAD. I NEVER LIKED BENITEZ FROM HIS LIVERPOOL DAYS THOUGHT HE WAS A BORING DEFENSIVE MANAGER BUT I GAVE HIM A CHANCE BUT HE HAS NOT CHANGED HE IS STILL THAT BORING MANAGER. GAYLE IS NOT A LONE STRIKER. ANITA IS NOT AN ATTACKING RIGHT MID. ALL I WANT IS A MANAGER TO PLAY THE PLAYERS IN THEIR PREFERRED POSITIONS IN A FORMATION THAT SUITS THEM. WITH THE RIGHT BALANCE. AYOZE AND GAYLE WILL ALWAYS BE CRAP UNLESS THEY PLAY IN A 42 WITH MITRO OR ANOTHER TARGET MAN TO COMPLIMENT THEM. THEN WE NEED DIRECT WINGERS WHO CAN JUST GET THE BALL OUT OF THEIR FEET AND CROSS WITH PACE INTO DANGER AREAS. BUT NOT NEWCASTLE.. AND THE LAST 4 MANAGERS.. ITS ALL 4231 WITH A SMALL LONE STRIKER.. WINGERS WHO WANT TO PASS BACKWARDS OR SIDEWAYS OR CUT IN. IF BENITEZ WANTS TO PLAY 4231 HE NEEDS TO GET THE RIGHT TYPE OF PLAYERS THAT LOVE TO PLAY IN THESE KIND OF FORMATION. GAYLE FROM LOWER LEAGUES I DONT THINK IS A 4231 PLAYER. NEITHER IS RITCHIE. IS DIAME A 4231 PLAYER? ONLY MANAGERS WHO CLICKED WITH THE RIGHT FORMATION WITH THE RIGHT PLAYERS WERE KEEGAN, ROBSON AND HOUGHTON.

Obertan could have been a threat in this league. Sammi Ameobi isn’t good enough. Anita is probably our best player. He had a bad game last week, but he’s technically our best player. We do need a player like Marveaux or Ben Arfa who can thread the ball through and beat a few players with pace. We’ve lost a good player in Coloccini as well.

If mccardew did this we would kill him. Rafa needs to up his game big time. How many more players does he need for gods sake? I to!d u he was obsessed with 4231. A loss here will cause massive pressure on the players. But dont worry rafa might get some more utility defenders. Mitro is so badly needed its untrue. Will rafa have the flexibility to go 442? Thats debateable.

  • 229 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 13, 2016 at 4:17 PM

When that contingent in the pre-season friendly disaster, against I think Luton, explicitly questioned the manhood and heart of those around them, it sent a message of meaning business and anybody not prepared to get off the ride. A grounding in reality lead by those senior players not expecting to be given anything.

This pre-season has been all positive fluff and soundbites, talking of a new project, new era, brighter things, unchecked idealism, everybody along for the ride in the clouds. Complacency and unpreparedness for the tough reality ensues.

Add to that Rafa’s cautious tactics that in no way fit this new narrative of positivism and you get this dumbfounding outcome.

One game at a time, cautious words but positive attitude and tactics were Huoghton’s approach and he had the personnel to grind first, impose their superiority 2nd, have the killer instinct 3rd.

Got it all wrong this time. Positive words about the future well beyond the next game, Negative attitude on the pitch and negative tactics not matching that, no personnel to drag us out of it.

  • 324 Spoof // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:00 PM

Another loss, and deservedly so, Rafa has got to abandon his over cautious approach and go for the jugular, we are better than most if not all in this league, but if you are frightened to go at teams all you are doing is levelling the playing field by giving your opponents a chance, if teams come at us and beat us then fine, that happens but Rafa has handed our opponents wins due to his negative approach.

Steve McClaren handed easy wins to our opponents by continually pairing Anita with Colback, Rafa is doing a similar job by having too many defensive players in the side, with Shelvey playing deep there was no need to have both Anita and Hayden, Rafa has the players and the squad, he has no excuse, it’s far too early to call it a crisis and to start calling for his head but if he doesn’t make a change in his tactics then the inevitable will happen, go for the jugular, this is a poor league and there is no need to be so cautious.

    Que sorpresa.

Not the casual stroll to the PL that preseason euphoria indicated. Told you it would probably be a bit choppy. This is still not the finished product by any means. Rafa is having to be very mean with his cloth-cutting, poor chap. Welcome to Mr Ashleys Newcastle, Mr Benitez!

  • 328 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:00 PM

Rafa is another manager here that cannot see the wood for the trees. Concentrating on the little details whilst getting the big things wrong.

Our best managers in recent times were all largely hands off, Keegan, SBR and Hughton never came across as too clever by half.

Harry Redknapp of 5-10 years ago would’ve been a good fit for this club. Fill players with confidence, attacking mentality, high tempo toe-to-toe, allow them to express themselves and no getting hung up on systems/shape, prioritising the defence to the detriment of the attack.

  • 329 colwell // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:00 PM

Anita RM theres your 1st issue! Is our squad that poor we have a poor DM out on the right? Aarrons is poor his pace has gone.

  • 342 Pat On The Heed // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:05 PM

Spoof. Relegation was not down to Anita and Colback pairing. Jesus It’s amazing how people fixate on one issue in the team they don’t like and then hook everything on that. They are steady eddies types, every team has them. Relegation was a confluence of circumstances. Over recruitment to key areas didn’t help. Not least relying on a 21 year old misfiring Mitrovic who missed two sitters a game til February.

  • 343 JamesToon // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:06 PM

G2 the worrying thing is is that people say oh don’t worry it’s only 2 games and before we know it, we’re like 10 games into the season and in the bottom half…

  • 344 sparky55 // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:07 PM

    gorgonzola

    Noted…I guess we’ll speak in January 🙂

  • 345 colwell // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:07 PM

Next game start fcuking Sissoko our best player use him whilst he’s here.

  • 346 RUNAWAY777 // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:08 PM

Next h9me game gateshead iam going too rather give them my mony at lest they can score goals big difference in price too

  • 347 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:08 PM

Gayle and Armstrong need loaning out. Stick with Riviere and Mitrovic and play Goufrran as a striker. Sign Luc Castaignos too and Knockeart etc.

  • 348 jeraziah // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:08 PM

We are shit. Plain and simple.

  • 349 ShirebrookToon // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:08 PM

we need a striker and a left winger now!!!!! Most of the play yet again come from down the right 2nd half with Ritchie an janmaat. were to one dimensional and its frustrating

  • 350 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:09 PM

You’ll find out that the next striker brought in will probably be worser than Riviere.

  • 351 toon kk // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:09 PM

I thought we’d loose tbh, what people are forgetting is we were a very weak squad last season, our best player’s have been sold, replacements haven’t got the quality of Gini and Townsend, so we’ve got a squad which is badly overrated imo

  • 352 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:10 PM

52 000 people passed money away for this tripe…joke

  • 353 NUFCPaul // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:10 PM

gorgonzola – it’s funny, I don’t recall you saying BEFORE the game that there was no way we’d win today. Everyone’s an expert AFTER the fact, aren’t they?

  • 354 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:11 PM

    Why not just play this?

    _____________Sels
    Anita_Lascelles_Mbemba_Clark
    Ritchie_Diame_Shelvey_Gayle
    _____Gouffran_Armstrong

We need to go for it, 4-2-3-1 doesn’t suit us.

  • 355 Munster Mag // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:12 PM

Goofy spot on re 442, certainly at home. But for some reason rafa is fixated with 4231 and defensive wingers. Pardew did the same and we hammered him, rightly. Of course we have time but teams that get out of this league have power pace and often have two strikers. Rafa cant be allowed to dine out on Liverpool forever. He has to get us at teams at home. And how many more players will he need? Lets hope ritchie stays fit or we are in trouble. Unbelievable.

  • 356 AMEOBI // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:12 PM

Haha absolute tools slating Newcastle after 2 games in a total different league, yet you all thought we’d walk it. Reality lads.

Yes we’ve the manager and team just takes time, give it time.

Booing at halftime and full time is an absolute disgrace, embarrassing fans at times.

  • 357 RUNAWAY777 // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:12 PM

Why was sissoko not playing i guess he’s still picking them big wages up for do nowt nothing bew i guess

  • 358 ShirebrookToon // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:12 PM

Why isn’t tiote playing. Is he injured?

  • 359 Yo-yo // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:12 PM

If Rafa Benitez, with his CV cannot manage Newcastle out of the Championship, then all you critics might as well give up and go home.

We have had a succession of shite or mediocre managers and you guys are all used to slagging off Mr Average – Mr Johnstone Paints and the Wally with the Brolly.
Well, maybe the regime at the Toon has overseen real rotset in aand its deeper than we think, the quality of the plyers not top class – and some not even Championship class and the problems will take more than a few weeks to sort out.
Maybe even a top mamager – like Rafa – is going to have his work cut out to get us back to the level we want and needs more than a few matches to get the team to gel.

And those already calling for his head on a platter – who do you want to replace him ?

  • 360 NUFCPaul // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:13 PM

RUNAWAY777 – bye bye, you won’t be missed. Enjoy those Gateshead games and leave supporting the Toon to actual supporters.

Two games in and it’s the end of the world. Pathetic.

  • 361 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:13 PM

Stop with all this it’ll come good nonsense ffs! Haven’t you learnt anything?

That’s precisely what got us into a state last season.

Urgency needed! When we stopped with the softly softly approach back end of last season, because it was now or never and reality couldn’t be ignored, we went on a little run towards the end. They rose to the challenge.

We need to challenge them and call them out. Patience has been tried to death at this club and it never works!

Get on their backs early, it’ll either make or break them. Can’t handle, ask for a move so we can get somebody that can. Though that’s another argument, because aside from Ritchie, Diame and possibly Hanley, I wouldn’t have bought any of the others. Recruitment has been poor.

It’s up to us to do it because the dressing room is sorely lacking in those no nonsense types. Lascelles would be a good vice-captain under a more experienced head. He acts the part, but the pressure is clearly getting to him now he has been formally given the leadership role.

    Soothsayers – OUT!

  • 362 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:14 PM

Its only 1 game, its only 2 games, its only 10 games, its only 25 games, its only relegation.

  • 363 Tsunki // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:14 PM

Not too many people here I would have liked as co-passengers on the Titanic.

  • 364 lukes26 // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:14 PM

I love how this blog was full of people saying Aarons would tear up the Championship and Sissoko wasnt good enough

    where are those people now?

I have to say that Kets may be right…Riviere only scored the one goal for us..but did look useful when he played. Makes decent runs…gayle didnt do that last week

  • 365 GeordieTwo // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:16 PM

I guess my point is we have played 2 matches and there are 44 left YMFB mate. I haven’t found a way to watch the matches so I’m not suffering through it the same way but I don’t give up after 2 matches. Yes, we will have to play better, that’s obvious. There will be issues for a few weeks but the window isn’t even closed yet. We have Mitro and Krul to come in as well. I’ve been harping on about getting a senior striker for what seems like forever as well. The club should have pegged out the money required to get one weeks ago.

  • 366 RUNAWAY777 // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:17 PM

  • 367 GEORDIE69 // Aug 13, 2016 at 5:27 PM

    Dear Rafa,

I love you, but I know my club better than you. Change your awful formation to 4-4-2 and watch us dominate games.

    Kind regards,

    Chris Miller
