Rafa Benitez has his work cut out to turn things around at Newcastle and get things on track for possible promotion next May.
But the manager is not panicking with two defeats in the two games we have played so far in the Championship – games in which the Newcastle side has not played well.
Rafa Benitez on Saturday on the dug-out
Rafa said this after the game:
“We were not expecting this performance, we knew they could be difficult to organize and break down.”
“They are well organised and were able to counter attack. We still didn’t play at the level we wanted to play.
“In the second half we improved a lot, but it still wasn’t enough. We are really disappointed because we did not play as a lot of people expected us to.”
“I have seen the team doing well in training sessions so now we go into a game and show the same personality and quality we have seen in those sessions.”
“We have not seen that in the first two games and we made too many mistakes in possession. ” “Without the ball we were making movements we don’t usually do.”
“There were too many mistakes. We have to show character and confidence with the quality we have.”
“The players on the pitch were trying. It’s not a question to say we are missing this or that.” “We are working with these players and when we train and play they can do much better.”
“Why we aren’t playing at the level we are expecting I don’t know. We need to show character and confidence, and play the system.”
“The only positive we had today was the fans . They were behind the team and supported them, we just didn’t do well.”
Next up is Reading on Wednesday night but Newcastle will have to pay a lot better than they did in the two first halves we have played so far this season.
We have looked poor so far this season and were 1-0 down at half time in both games with those goals each coming in stoppage time of the first half.
Newcastle have to start that game and play an awful lot better against Reading if w are stop our run of defeats at two.
It’s been a disastrous start to the season – at least so far.
