    No thanks Edd

Still scarred from yesterday never mind putting myself through watching it again

  • 2 Jib // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:28 AM

For the tedious HBA lovers ( give it a rest please )

Extract from L’Equipe match report after PSG’s extremely hard fought win over Bastia on Friday

“Just like last week, Hatem Ben Arfa was virtually non-existent. He had only 33 touches of the ball, the fewest of any PSG outfield player who started the match.”

  • 3 brklyngeordie // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:32 AM

Didn’t get to watch here in The States was not available anywhere so can really give my review but looking at that highlight of first goal against us just exactly what kind of defense was that by Shelvey?

I am not panicking just yet but at same time do think if we still have Tiote and Sissoko at our disposal why not use them and it hurts me to say that especially about the ladder.

Still feel Tiote is best CM we got and should be kept on his day not many like him…Can anyone who watched game review for me how Hayden has done? Do we keep him in or should he be in danger of being dropped for next game?

  • 4 brklyngeordie // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:37 AM

    Jib

What is your point about HBA saying after 1 game for him it’s not working out for him in PSG? Do you remember what he did at NICE last season? Are you also starting to doubt Rafa? By the way Cabaye was not in starting XI for Palace does that mean you wouldn’t have him in an instant back on our side?

  • 5 hibbitt // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:38 AM

    what highlights ??????

  • 6 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:45 AM

Brklyn, jib is forgetting to tell you that Hatem scored a lovely goal in his first game against Lyon I think it was. Ball came across into the box, took a touch to stop it then knocked it into the top left corner.

Oh, and he plays for one of the best clubs in the world at the moment, PSG.

    Long live Hatem.

  • 7 Jib // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:47 AM

    Brooklyn
    My point
It was the first 2 games HBA was crap for PSG.
Nobody said it wasn’t working for him he probably just needs time at a new club – you know just like a lot of our signings.

  • 8 Munster Mag // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:47 AM

Thing is, where does rafa go from here? Lets say he gets the left winger we need and a powerful striker. Will he train the team to attack more?? The assumption has to be yes, but logic doesnt say it will happen. His negative tactics and tinkering with winning teams used to absolutely infuriate liverpool fans at times. On a sunny day in august why did we not attack huddersfield more. How many more signings does he need, to tear into huddersfield town? Is his philosophy based on defence and containment first. He has been a great fan communicator but is his philosophy demonstrated in the negative cautiousness we saw last season in the crunch games? Hope not and stilk believe in him but i think most fans are starting to ask questions. The next game gives us a good chance to restart.

  • 9 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:49 AM

    It was a trophy game.

  • 10 Munster Mag // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:50 AM

Hatem wudnt get in a rafa team consistently. Choose your man guys but hba away in bristol ona wet wednesday. And rafa screaming on the touchline about defensive shape. Are you joking?

  • 11 posada // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:51 AM

The two goals we conceded were pathetic.
I hope this is not just some self indulgent ego trip for Rafa Benitez.
    I’m starting to wonder.

  • 12 Munster Mag // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:54 AM

Anyway lets be hopeful. 3-0 weds night. Gayle ( my choice for top goalscorer not looking great just yet doh! ) , diame ( great signing rafa) and ritchie ( only decent player so far) . Htl

  • 13 posada // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:55 AM

Rafa played 4/3/3 with Hayden in the defensive midfield role.
    It clearly did not work.
Thing is I can’t think of two players he can put together in a midfield 2.
Shelvey he clearly does not trust in there.

  • 14 jazzyp // Aug 14, 2016 at 9:57 AM

    Munster

There is a massive black cloud now over St James park what needs to be addressed, Never mind in 5 games time mate.
Again I ask why keep playing 2 holding midfielders when we are supposed to be the top team in the Championship.
How can we let the likes of Huddersfield dominate at will to the point where they look the home team.
Why are the same flaws in the team still hurting us game in game out.

It’s the same old same old and j just don’t see on yesterday’s performance how it will be turned round for the next match

  • 15 msk21dec // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:04 AM

I really dont like shelvey in midfield. Twice he could have made a tackle maybe but was half arsed if you see the clips on their 1st goal and 1st chance. Shelvey should let the defender jockey and himself sprint for a tackle not just run next to the player and do nothing. Shelvey out. Get a mid of anita, tiote and diame with anita and diame licenced to support attack. Give ritchie free licence behind mitro and gayle

  • 16 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:05 AM

We needed another winger and someone to create. I looked on here after the game and saw people bemused with Aarons coming off. It was correct I thought. He was getting pushed off the ball and tackled very easily – looking way out of his depth. On one attack he looked lost and quite petrified in possession.

We were looking short on pace.

Anita, we know, is not a winger. The wrong type of balls were coming in for Gayle. Had Mitro been in there and Ritchie on I think the score line would have been different.

I like Ritchie a lot already. Very good player. Shame he missed his header.

It was a poor game, but with the amount of new players who have come in, it’d be natural that they may take a bit of time to gel. Expecting it to click straight away isn’t necessarily going to happen. It’s just how it is. Rafa is no mug, as his CV shows. He’ll hopefully correct what is needed.

It’s a long term view of this development, not a panic over the first two games with all that have happened.

The flags looked great. I sit in the Gallowgate Strawberry corner as well.

  • 17 Rotonda heights // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:10 AM

    Moanster,

You’re nauseatingly and really so very boringly now giving Rafa endless grief, yet you’ll happily condone someone like Pardew who only won 2 out of 21 matches in the second half of last season playing garbage football.

It’s like you think you know it all or at least more than one of football’s most decorated managers.

Granted it’s a disappointing start and we lack creativity. Is rafa trying to address that? I would imagine so with many links to knockaert, forestieri and Insigne.

Rafa has been left a pile of s—e by Carr, no 2 ways about it, but your non-stop criticism of the guy virtually from the day he got here is doing my heed in..

  • 18 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:10 AM

    Laurent Robert 32 and Brklyn

Please ignore Jib he rabbles on and insults people on this blog, he gets a kick out of it, suppose all frustrated teens do.

Any of those old players of ours would be in this team today no doubt. Thats whats scary, definitely not progression.

By the looks of things on current form we would be mid table possibly lower. Wining the league is out of the question now, Fulham has that honour atmo.

With these current set of players you can forget about any forward movement. Sunderland loses 2:1 away to a club that can buy Newcastle 20 times over, we lose to Huddersfield ….

    Thanks guys.

  • 19 John Tudor // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:12 AM

    disgusting dock their wages

  • 20 Rotonda heights // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:13 AM

    Jib

HBA may not do it every game but you must surely see how fans just want someone to do bit of magic and create something out of the blue. We have no one at the moment who could get remotely anywhere near providing anything like that.

  • 21 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:14 AM

    Insigne.?

HAHAHAHAHAHAH sorry….if that lad signs, the moon would blow up. He probably had a look at our first two games and would sign a contract to net get near Newcastle.

  • 22 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:18 AM

    Laurent Robert 32

What stumps me is…how can it be a poor game at home to such crap opposition? How is that even possible? Are these players caving in from the task ahead.

You are playing at home!!!!!!!! in the Championship vs Huddersfield!!!!! I am lost for any further comments.

Priority surely now has to be a fresh CM, a LW, a LB and another striker who isn’t blown away.

  • 23 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:21 AM

    Hibbit
It is year after year we buy lightweight players – the list is endless – still doing it

AND STILL GETTING BULLIED OUT OF MOST GAMES.

Take yesterday: 4 out of the eleven
    Hayden – lightweight
    Anita – Little and lightweight
    Aarons – Small lightweight
    Gayle – Small lightweight

    subs;
Ritchie – small lightweight BUT GOT ATTITUDE
    Armstrong – small lightweight
    Perez – Small lightweight

You cannot expect to win all the games with a lightweight starting eleven.

As someone wrote last night night a team of Hobbits – I Bilbo Gayle

    When will we learn.

You don’t have to be the best player in the World but if you are big and strong have a little bit of skill decent in the air and get stuck in that’s what we need in this game/league.

And if you buy lightweight small players they need attitude like RITCHIE and he showed it yesterday.

Wednesday – we have got to swallow or pride hatred for Sissoko and play him and even Goufran or Riviere up front with Gayle or Perez to give a ‘bit’ of presence.

  • 24 welshgeordie9 // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:33 AM

    Charlie

That was me that called them hobbits, that’s always been our biggest problem, as i said last other championship teams have got height at the back, in the middle and up front and I’m not talking one in each of those 3 positions I’m tallking a few, alright we have got height at the back but in midfield, only Diame and Hayden are over 6ft tall and up front we have only got Mitrovic, no wonder we are struggling.

  • 25 Ron Knee // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:35 AM

If you think Rafa can turn things around: DON’T PANIC.

If you think Rafa can’t turn things around: START/CONTINUE PANICKING.

  • 26 The next Mike Williamson // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:36 AM

Only 2 of our attacking options have been a regular starter over the last few years. Ritchie and mitrovic.

Gayle couldnt get games for palace who have had rubbish strikers.
perez bit part and cant play in our formation

is it time to bring out gouffran and riviere? Cant believe in a season when most teams will defend against us rafa forgot to buy anyone who can attack.

  • 27 welshgeordie9 // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:37 AM

Had a go at the team yesterday but there’s no way i want Rafa out, just thinking that you would have to be insane, he will have to change the formation, it’s not working, think we were lucky with some of our results in the friendlies.

  • 28 The next Mike Williamson // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:39 AM

Given our options rafa must start with ritchie and gayle on the wings, make do with diame the DM as a number 10 and put untested Armstrong upfront. Aarons and perez can be used as impact players.

we need a proper no10, diame cant play there.

  • 29 lochinvar // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:39 AM

    Msk21 @15
So right about Shelvey – he seems disinterested and I don’t think even showed any enthusiasm or appealed when we won the penalty. Is he peeved because he’s not the Captain or the centre of attention ? Or is it because his occasional wonder pass doesn’t result in games been win ?
Despite loosing weight his mobility seems restricted.
The players are too tense – they need to find a sense of fun and play with more freedom and purpose , too much coaching dulls the winning spirit. Armchair manager – for sure, but it’s there for all to see.

  • 30 welshgeordie9 // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:40 AM

After next weekend we have got Mitrovic back but it would help if Benitez signed a new forward asap, get your skates on Rafa.

  • 31 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:41 AM

yesterday – did anyone know where he was playing??

  • 32 hibbitt // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:43 AM

the next 3/4 signing will decide the season if Rafa gets it wrong it will be more of the same
its the lack of fight that gets to me as much as anything
had so much hope but its draining fast

  • 33 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:44 AM

On Ritchie, I heard Mick Lowes on Radio Newcastle say in the pre-match show that Ritchie had hardly trained for 5 days I think it was.

  • 34 welshgeordie9 // Aug 14, 2016 at 10:44 AM

As much as i would love to kick sissokos arse at the moment due to his annoying attitude, I would pick him on Wednesday night along with tiote.

  • 37 geordie157 // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:02 AM

Try and get Moses and Assombalonga, get some power and pace in the final third. Add Forresteri or play sissoko in the 10

    Darlow
    Janmaat, Mbemba, Lascelles, Galloway
    Diame, Hayden
    Ritchie, Forresteri/Sissoko, Moses
    Assombalonga

  • 38 lochinvar // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:06 AM

    Ron Knee @35
If they were tense before yesterday how will they cope with Burton away ?
Scares me to think about it and I don’t get paid £50,000 a week for the privilege of playing for NUFC .
This is the cumulation of modern football being reduced to a board game and years of the likes of Pardew and McClown doing it by the book rather than inspired leadership.
Too many times yesterday there were opportunities to pass inside to a player running into space and forward yet the pass went backwards and the momentum was lost. On other occasions there were players in space who didn’t receive the ball because heads were down and the pass went elsewhere.
Take them to play on the sand at Tynemouth and mark out a pitch twice the size of SJP. They’ll soon see the game differently , get fitter and can have an ice cream afterwards. Happy days.

  • 39 The next Mike Williamson // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:11 AM

We need someone in the no 10 with a brain to unlock defences and a left winger, any left winger is better than none.

  • 40 Ron Knee // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:13 AM

    lochinvar

I don’t know what the answer is. Last year they got in Steve Black to little effect.

  • 41 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:19 AM

Unless we can contrive to bring in (I’d say) three players as good or better than the best we currently have, Rafa is properly up against it. He’ll have to make this squad considerably more than the sum of it’s parts to even entertain the idea of promotion. Do the math: the players who came down and the ones we’ve signed just don’t add up to a winning number. And the odds of Charnley being able to get quality players over the line in short order are too high to be even expressed numerically. I said the other day, Rafa is going to have to dig deep into his bag of tricks, and probably invent some new ones and all. Hope he is working on it as we speak.

  • 42 Munster Mag // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:23 AM

Rotunda, you were the one who posted every day re pardew for years. I dont support pardew but there is no point trying to re-explain that to you. I pointed our that rafa can be over defensive and this is exactly what we are seeing. I support the guy but didnt fawn as much as some because we didnt stay up and we blew serious chances last season. Of course he didnt have much time but we blew good chances so i pointed that out. Hopefully things will improve soon. I think they will.

  • 43 Belfast // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:30 AM

I’m tipping Palace for relegation this season. Club legend Jedinack stripped of the captaincy and being forced out by all accounts and selling their best player Bolasie. I think they’re gonna struggle.

Palace fan on that new bt sport show last night saying Pardew’s under pressure already.

  • 44 Belfast // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:34 AM

and the losing Fa cup finalist has been relegated two seasons on the trot.

  • 45 posada // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:36 AM

    Charlie at 31.
Where was Diame playing ? Well for me we were 4/3/3 or you could call it 4/1/4/1.
As I say from time to time all these systems are simply variations of 4/4/2.
    Hayden was the holding midfielder.
Diame and Shelvey should have been able to play more advanced roles as a consequence.
When Chelsea played 4/3/3 about ten years ago their one up top was Drogba. We had Gayle.
The left of the attacking three was Robin. We had Anita.
It was never going to work. The players did not understand their roles or the roles of the players round them.
Was Rafa trying to be too clever. Personally I think he has limited options.
As things stand these players are simply waiting to leave and play no part in things – Saivet, Rivierre,Toite, Sissoko, Krul,Goufran etc.

  • 46 Belfast // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:37 AM

Would have them as relegation candidates with or without Pardew to be honest.

  • 47 Yo-yo // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:39 AM

The thing is that the Hobbits won. Skill and endless determination.
Our failings seem to be down to the lack of determination.

Still a few Ents helping out might be useful.

    And Rafa is Gandalf ?

  • 48 posada // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:39 AM

We have got rid of a lot of dead wood.
My fear is we have replaced them with a lot of dead wood.
    A massively missed opportunity.

  • 49 Goofy // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:51 AM

I think Gayle will come good with a strong partner, he has no service apart fromhigh balls being lumped up from defence. Perez would even benefit from a Mitro type striker.
We don’t need 2 defensive mids unless we are up 1-0 and getting pushed back. 2 defensive mids against Championship mid/strikers is playing it far to safe, (or so we would think) get a couple of attackng minded no bullsh!t midfielders and a tough guy upfront. If ee can’t defend score more than them.

  • 50 Mister Tuff // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:52 AM

Moanster – apologies accepted. Keep your chin up man!

If Benitez does not sign some decent (quality) players in the next fortnight – there will be plenty of folk expressing their concerns and re-evaluating their assessments of winning the league.

  • 51 Mister Tuff // Aug 14, 2016 at 11:56 AM

Jib Jibberish – you love to put the boot in on Toon favourites – HBA, Keegan and Shearer.

Your latest offering about HBA in the Bastia game suggests a L’Equipe match report.
Please provide a link as I’m sure your post originated from a freelance writer Andrew Gibney and Lille supporter who writes for that “top” football journal – the Bleacher Report.

  • 52 jimmysmith // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:00 PM

It really wasn’t two defensive mids. It’s a holding mid, and a deep lying playmaker. Rafa is trying to get them to play football. He has to, because teams will sit back against us, which makes it harder to break them down. We need to keep possession and probe, and it’s gonna take time to sort it out. After last season, this might be harder to swallow than usual, but it’s always true – you need to wait ten games before even looking at the table.

  • 53 posada // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:01 PM

I wish we would stop all the flag waving nonsense.
We are supposed to be there for the football.
Some folks would be better off going to watch a Jazz Band contest.
Its a load of hype we could do without.
Does the team get the crowd going or vice versa.
I’d like to see them come up with something out there.

  • 54 SPRINGY // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:02 PM

    morning all
some people are saying its only huddersfield, but we have struggled against sides like this for years, just look back at the cup runs over recent years…pathetic, when teams turn up,raise there game looking for our scalp we normally get beat,or struggle…now we have a league full of teams wanting our scalp….our attitude to so called “lesser” opposition has always been disgusting….that needs to change dramatically, not saying this is the only problem,i agree the team needs strengthening and the manager could probably give some thought to style, shape and player selection, but there needs to be serious look at the attitude.

  • 55 putra_hayzad // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:03 PM

Idk why but lascelles look shaky need more experience leader player at the club not a bossing attitude

  • 56 jimmysmith // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:15 PM

Maybe the reason why he doesn’t seem so keen on Tiote all of a sudden, is perhaps he doesn’t value a ball winning CM as much as a passing one against Championship opposition. He seems to like Hayden, but he is a risky proposition though since he’s only really got half season at Hull under his belt. Shelvey and Colback seemed to rotate, when they might be more effective for us in tandem.

  • 57 jazzyp // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:20 PM

    Springy
Sorry mate but that’s exactly where our problem lies.
Why should we be willing to accept defeats like that to supposed inferior teams, Just because past dictate’s so.
We are suppose to building for the future yet look in a worst state than ever on the pitch.
If we had played the likes of a Man city yesterday… Then it would have been a rugby score

  • 58 ShirebrookToon // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:22 PM

I’d play tiote. We need a midfield destroyer and he fits the bill nicely as the championship is a lot more aggressive

  • 59 Jail for Ashley // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:23 PM

  • 60 Jail for Ashley // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:25 PM

If we’d played Man City yesterday, Townsend, Wijnaldum and a top class LB and striker might have been playing.

  • 61 cyprus // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:30 PM

  • 63 SPRINGY // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:31 PM

dont get me wrong,im not willing to accept getting beat but it seems these players either cant cope with the pressure of being the big name or think because they are the big name, they think they just have to show up against these sides to win….every game should be ther same whether thats arsenal or accrington but there seems to be a laziness,a relaxed attitude that used to set in….it seems now this attitude is there all the time.

  • 64 Munster Mag // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:33 PM

  • 69 SPRINGY // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:45 PM

    shirebrook
the nervousness is probs down to the lack of confidence in themselves individually and as a team, when they conceed you can almost hear them thinking…. ah no not again!..and there collective heads drop and there passing and control goes out the window….this team is shot totally of confidence with the exception of ritchie but that will only last so long if we keep struggling, theres a lot of players who’s form has dipped really bad….coincidence…probably not.

  • 70 jazzyp // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:50 PM

    Hibbitt

the players have to take responsibility on the pitch and there just not doing that at the moment.
there is no leadership on the pitch and the captaincy has quite clearly effected Lascelles.
But ultimately the manager lives and dies by his decisions.
You cannot tell me that he has not had time now to address the flaws that are so blatantly obvious to all.
Granted we are 2 games in but he needs to start working his magic soon or were gonna be in a mess

  • 71 toon kk // Aug 14, 2016 at 12:53 PM

    Jazzyp p,
I was referring to the fact that yesterday was a league game and if we’d played Man City then those players would probably still be here rather than a quickly assembled brand new squad still getting used to each other.

There’s a couple of major flaws in our club/squad, there has been for a long time.
First of all our squad lacks power and quality but my major concern is the loosing mentality that plagues our club, good players seem to go back over.
Newcastle fans probably expect to much, maybe it’s a pressure players can’t handle.

i honestly think the next signings will be key to how the season pans out so many players falling short
the left side is still a major problem we don’t have a goal scorer and we lack a mf general
same problems we ended the season on

  • 83 jazzyp // Aug 14, 2016 at 1:10 PM

    Offkey

Rafa knew the problems within the squad last season as in the left back position.
How many players have been used there now in his time alone ?? yet we still persist with playing a CB in a left back position who constantly gets skinned in every game…..Yesterday was no exception.
Why do we persist in playing a utility player in Anita when we could have gone out and bought a designated player who plays in that position.
These are not just my views but of 50,000 that were at the game mate.
Half time i went for cheeky pint at the bar and everyone was saying the same. The lads i have sat around for 20 odd year were addressing the same constant problems as before.

Why were we booed off at half time and full time. I pray to god Rafa can sort this out given time, Because if he leaves then where does that leave us!!

Like you, I presume, I find it incredible that some posters are questioning Rafa’s ability and tactics. The man’s one of the most successful managers in the world and his favoured 4231 set up’s been used to bring him that success.

Rafa committed to Newcastle United because of the support and ‘love’ shown by the Club’s fans and if his critics start getting at him as they did Pardew and McLaren to an extent, he’ll feel betrayed and walk. They shouldn’t underestimate the man as there’s be a host of top top clubs queuing up for his services.

Yes, we haven’t had the best of starts but with nine players out and eight new recruits the players have got to have time to gel and learn each others games – as does Rafa. We should be realistic and not expect instant success as the Club is work in progress, a project that’ll take years to rectify the damage caused by years of mismanagement.

Next signings crucial, do’nt make me laugh. How many more no marks is Rafa going to sign. we are picking up players who are not wanted elsewhere and at inflated prices. only decent signing is Ritchie.
Still need a LB, Striker and quality playmaker. Some pace in the team is a must.

  • 87 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 14, 2016 at 1:16 PM

    Yeap…..

Like I keep saying need to get rid of the entire CM. as a start. Shelley out, Anita out, Comeback out all crap and below par, sh1t players that will never do anything for us.

Back 2 not sure where to start we bought so many all crap. Defensive errors the whole way. Never a sense of assurance but complete nervousness and doubt with everything they do.

If confidence is everything which it certainly plays a huge role, we don’t even have the basics never mind confidence.

one HAS to surely think in the RAFA camp, there are wheyey more serious issues now. Emergency meeting should be setup to fund proper players and by doing so stop the rot.

I just don’t see where the f will the turnaround is going to come from these crap players I really truly don’t.

    Shelvey? Anita? Coleback? Perez? Who?

  • 88 Moonraker15 // Aug 14, 2016 at 1:16 PM

We fans have to give Rafa time however disappointed we are it is better to start like this than do a Brighton of last season. It’s times like this when we have to show how good we are as fans. or are we delusional? No we know better so let’s get behind Rafa! The alternative is unthinkable!

  • 89 Macas // Aug 14, 2016 at 1:17 PM

We have signed a lot of average defensive players, but our recruitment of attacking players has been woeful so far. If the likes of Sissoko, Riviere and Ameobi do leave, then we will have lost 10 attacking players this summer, and at the moment we have signed 3. Granted not all of those would play, but it leaves our squad looking totally threadbare in certain areas. God help us if we get any injuries, and if we get major injuries then we are totally screwed. So when there is talk of maybe signing a striker and a winger, you have to wonder if Rafa has lost the plot. We need at least 4 four new attacking options, and quality ones as well.

  • 90 lesh // Aug 14, 2016 at 1:18 PM

    Jazzy

You can bet your boots that Rafa’s well aware of the squad’s shortcomings and will be keen to rectify them with the LB we need.

But we should ask ourselves why the flood of incomers came to a halt. Maybe Charnley’s managing the Club’s cash which’ll not be slushing about by the sackful.

Patience is called for and I’m sure that Rafa’ll be as frustrated as the fans.

  • 100 Offkey // Aug 14, 2016 at 1:26 PM

Jazzy – I understand what your saying, really I do, but my thinking on it is as simple as this.

    Years of mismanagement
Brining in players on promises of better clubs coming in for them.
The squad, with technically gifted players, rotting and degenerating into the tripe fed last season.
The squad imo, was rotten to core.
Spirit and mentality of most, simply shocking.
Rafa in, too late to save us.
Overhaul of squad, but many still here who were rotten
New players, mixing and gelling with old in recent weeks.
New players, as yet only sold on Ritchie, rest look under par, however, same with the other rotters that remained
    Needs time to grow

Too long to do a narrative

  • 101 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 14, 2016 at 1:26 PM

I use to be a forever optimist on here for years and got slated for sticking up for the drivel we were served.
Last September i made a conscious decision to for go the games, something i haven’t done since the 90’s.
Yet like many i was swayed with the new found optimism within the club so decided to go back.
Yesterday on the long drive up the A1 i was bouncing, Couldn’t wait to be back at my beloved NUFC.
It was great to meet up with lads i have got to know and become good friends with through one love….Newcastle United.
The game started the Gallowgate looked stunning with its bearing of flags, The noise was deafening………..And from that point it all went downhill fast. The football was dross. The crowd was none existent in voice.
I said goodbye to the lads around me and left embarrassed and angry that still a year later we are in the same predicament as last season but a league down

  • 111 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 14, 2016 at 1:43 PM

It’s no surprise that the bloggers who went to the match are more angry and frustrated than others. Rafa has had all summer to get in the right ingredients and bin others. He has twice now served us up a dog’s breakfast.

I can’t for the life of me understand how Ritchie didn’t start given the evidence of his fitness when he came on.

How does Aarons get a start? I’m all for giving a player a chance but on that evidence it’s hard to see what he can be doing in training and reserve games to deserve one. And a five year contract when he’s achieved nothing for this club or any other.

    Hayden looks bang average.

What is the idea of playing Anita as a winger?

Dwight Gayle looks like a poor academy player.

Hanley has been dropped already, even from the bench, despite being fit.

Shelvey is pedestrian but to be fair to him, he has no one to pick out.

And Janmaat rubs me up the wrong way when he demands noise from the crowd. Does he not realise that he and his team mates needs to do just one good thing on the pitch to get the crowd going? I’m sorry but I can’t stand him now. His attitude and performances are shite.

Our best players are as follows:

    Mbemba
    Janmaat
    Anita
    Sissoko
    Aarons
    Ritchie
    Diame
    Mitrovic
    Krul

That tells me that we need 3/4 new players. The first few defeats are acceptable as we are in transition. I expect us to be near the top come January.

  • 114 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 14, 2016 at 1:47 PM

a lot of talk this morning about players leaving, rivie being one,i would hang on to him,we have slight(weight) strikers in gayle, arma, perez all mobile but we lack strength and power, height, only have mitro so should really should hang on to rivvy to make it 3 of each, granted if we sign another big striker,he’s not liked by everyone but if he’s not going to be replaced it would just weaken an already weak squad.

Another shocking performance yesterday, reality check for our fans who instantly hype players without any merit. I keep reading 4-2-3-1 doesn’t work in the championship etc. Bollocks does it not, it works if played right and you have the right personnel to play the formation.

In the summer Rafa has wasted money on duds, bang average players. I had a dig at Aaron’s on Thursday by stating he hasn’t done anything since he broke into the team. The hype around him is hilarious

Lascelles, I said it wouldn’t be long till people had a go at him, should never be captain, has promise as a younger players but the hype he was getting was again ridiculous.

Perez apparently plays like Suarez according to some on here or is of similar style, another lad that is poor!!

I have no issues with the formation rafa chooses to play, he needs to drop Anita from RW, it’s embarrassing for a club like this that we can’t find a RW. We’ve loaned some lads that would have been better off staying

And I didn’t expect us to fail to rise to the occasion. I should have done of course, because Newcastle sides in recent years have an uncanny knack of strangling the best atmospheres. I need to give my face a slap.

Any talent in our relegation squad has now gone. Unless Rafa can work some organisational magic and sprinkle some psychological fairy dust, I fear it’s going to be a long hard season.
