Newcastle central midfielder Henri Saivet was only signed in January, but he has played just four games for Newcastle and it looks like that’s all he will play for the Magpies, as there is news today in France that St. Etienne want to sign him on loan.
French daily L’Equipe are reporting that Etienne manager Christophe Galtier wants to bring the 9 times capped Senegal International back to the French league where he previously played for Bordeaux.
Henri Saivet – could be on his way this week
That would seem to suit Newcastle, since St Etienne will reportedly pay some of the 25 year-old’s £40K/week wages.
And St. Etienne want an option to buy in the loan contract – not an obligation to buy that we had with Remy Cabella last season and currently have with Florian Thauvin – both with Marseille.
As it turns out Thauvin made his first appearance for Marseille today in the 0-0 home draw with Toulouse, but he didn’t play well and was replaced at half time.
With the option to buy St. Etienne will decide probably next May whether they want to sign Saivet for the transfer fee stated in the loan contract.
As the end of August approaches Rafa Benitez wants to clear the decks of players who are surplus to requirements and they include Saivet, who we paid £5M for back in January.
Rafa has never used him in any competitive game since he arrived at Newcastle in March.
So he is indeed surplus to requirements as far as Rafa is concerned, but unfortunately he still has five years left on his rather lucrative Newcastle contract.
