Blow To Newcastle – What’s Our Best Team For Reading?

9:02 am, Wednesday, August 17th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

New signing Mohamed Diame picked up an ankle injury in his debut last Saturday against Huddersfield and will miss the game tonight against Reading.

Moussa Sissoko also picked up an injury in training and will miss tonight’s game, although he was unlikely to play with his long transfer saga ongoing.

matt ritchie

Matt Ritchie should start tonight

Newcastle must get a win tonight if the mood on Tyneside is to be lifted, after the shock of two successive defeats to start the season.

We hope Rafa will play Vurnon Anita in a holding midfield position tonight and not out on the wing.

This is the team that could start tonight’s game:

Janmaat Lascelles (c) Hanley Dummett
Anita Shelvey
Gayle Perez Aarons
Subs: Darlow Clark Hayden Tiote Gamez Colback Armstrong

Maybe Rafa will give a game to Karl Darlow and he has to give debuts to both Clark and Gamez at some point and maybe tonight?

We are struggling to pick some good in-form attackers in the side.

With Diame not available for the number 10 spot and Siem de Jong injured again, we gave it to Perez.

And who to start on the left wing after Aarons was less than impressive in that first half on Saturday, although he should be a lot better tonight – hopefully.

We need at least two new attackers brought in before the end of the month and we do get Aleksandar Mitrovic back from his four game suspension after the game at Bristol City on Saturday.

He’s been a big miss.

Our star man so far – Matt Ritchie – should be back in the starting line-up so that’s good.

Grant Hanley should also get a start, but Chancel Mbemba looked good on Saturday, so we don’t know whether Rafa will try Hanley and Mbemba together at the back with captain Lascelles on the bench tonight?

Jamaal has not been at his best so far this season.

Both Brighton and Norwich are top of the league at the moment after last night’s games having taken 7 points from their first three games, with Brighton winning 3-0 at home to Rotherham and Norwich winning 1-0 at home to Bristol City.

Newcastle play at Bristol City on Saturday.

What team would you play tonight?

7 points from 2 games, are they cheating!

After what we witnessed last season if Anita and Colback are the anchor midfield pairing then god help us !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ah, youve changed it! Dammit

Spoof – you are Spot on @5 on previous thread.
That’s what I tried to say the other day.You put & expressed it better.Rafa hasn’t achieved anything with nufc to get sky high praise. So far,his signings are dross, match day team selection was dross, team set up is dross…
He failed to collect vital points against those teams you mentioned last season which lead us to sink.A lot of people get sold by his past records. But the reality is about here and now.
As you said,it’s way better to wait and see whether things do improve before giving him too high credit for nothing, particularly on the pitch.

    I would play the following

I am not Armas biggest fan but I cant see us winning many games with one up front, if last season didnt prove to everyone that unless you have an Aguero you need to play 2 up front, especially at home.

We should be the strongest team in the league and playing one up front gives them a chance, if we play 2 or even 3 up top and apply pressure to these teams then they wont find it so easy to attack against us.

Currently the opposition have had all day to play the ball out from the back and get players pushing forward becuase Gayle cant track down 4 defenders at once

Reading will truly park the bus. Can our front four of out of form Perez & Gayle, unproven Aarons, and Ritchie find space against ten defenders? Can our army of sidewards passers unlock a ten man defence? Personally I don’t think Aarons is ready yet to start games but he is ten million times a better option than Anita.

Since we only have one attacking option the bench I would promote Vuckic or one of the terrible frenchmen for this one.

My front four: Ritchie Perez Gayle/ Armstrong

Yes I did see those games, and I also saw Liverpool at home, Man U away, Chelsea at home and Spurs away, and what have I gathered from that, as with McClaren we turned up against the big teams but let ourselves down against the teams we should have turned up against.

So please tell what has changed because against two of the weaker teams in the league once again we did not turn up, so far Rafa has done f-all to improve our mentality, I believe he can but so far he hasn’t, and in all honesty I doubt that anyone could genuinely deny that !

I expect Colback and Anita both starting again. And most sadly, I expect us to lose again.

Expat- Thanks for your earlier response and I understand the point of view. Maybe you need to go on a Blackley type speed reading course.

I don’t buy the reality of the situation line which is the nub of the debate. Try telling that to Daniel Levy ; a businessman but more importantly a lifetime Spurs fan. Football is undoubtedly big business but it remains a sport. Nothing ventured then nothing gained and Benitez is less inclined just to rollover than those that went before.

Regional economic decline has impacted northern clubs revenues but a new tv deal means that the proportion of revenue gem match days will
decrease helping clubs in poorer regions. Assuming we are promoted then we lag by a season and will be buying into an inflationary transfer market.

For me Gayle Anita lascelles and dummet need to be “rested”. They havn’t performed at all.
Can’t wait for mitro to be back.

    proportion of clubs’ revenue

Sadly too many are living the dream and expecting the KK entertainers part two to evolve, hopefully it will and what we are seeing now is just teething problems, but as we both agree you do have to look at what is happening now rather than what your dreams tell you will happen in the future, but lets not be too hasty as I do feel that we have enough in the squad to go back up but what we need is for Rafa to be adapt a more adventurish approach as we have been far too cautious so far.

Ian Toon/carl/pushy, what is unnecessarily daft about saying that after being relegated, the average quality will decline?

can make good signings, but some of the better players will move on – Townsend and Gini. This is a discussion blog about football. You must be trolling as usual.

    Quite right

or before getting on his case quite so much !

    don’t you think ?.

    It’s a 2 way road.

Janmaat?? How can one player be so negative to the side and get away with it? Useless, would rather start the game a man down.
