Rafa Kind Of Pleased With First Win – But …..

11:28 pm, Wednesday, August 17th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 12 Comments

Rafa Benitez doesn’t get carried away and he is also a perfectionist, so while the Newcastle manager is pleased to get the first win under his belt – so to speak – Rafa knows there are still vast improvements that need to be made.

But he has again said that it’s hard for the players to concentrate when everything is still happening in the transfer market.

Rafa knows the side can do better and will do better.

Rafa Benitez – kind of pleased with win

This is what Benitez said after the game tonight:

“I know we can do much better, how much? That’s difficult to quantify, but I am sure we will improve.”

“We’ll have bad games, but I know that we will get better. Players could leave and players will come in before the end of the transfer window.”

“So it’s quite complicated to keep everybody focused. But we’ll get offers and some may go.” “At the moment it’s not easy for players to focus when they could leave, but we saw that against Reading.”

“We showed good character after conceding just before half-time.” “We have to play well and show that character. It’s always important to get results, the way you get helps you grow in the future.”

“If you do well we have more possibilities to win games.” “We could be saying the same about Fulham or Huddersfield , we made one mistake at Fulham and two against Huddersfield.”

“We made another against Reading and we conceded a goal but scored four.” “In the end, what matters is winning.”

The defense again looked too uncertain, especially in the first half when it was a close game – and we made yet another mistake to give them their goal on the stroke of half time.

Rafa can see where the improvements need to be made and we think we will start seeing those improvement in the coming games – starting with the defense.

It’s good to get the win though.

Comments welcome.

Nice of Jonjo to turn up tonight and win Blackas’ man of the match vote.

Improved display from Hayden. Still nothing flash but improved.

Does Mitros ban include the League Cup game ? So if he’s back for Saturday and paired with Gayle that could be a powerful combo .. As we need to start bullying defences and get ahead in games

Perez wasn’t great but did a much better job of helping Gayle than Diame did. Gayle even looked a bit gusty tonight.

    Overrated
Yes I would drop Sels for Darlow

OK, 4-1 was flattering, but only one team was ever going to win tonight. Didn’t get carried away with two losses so I’m not going to get carried away with this win, but this was a much better performance all round. It certainly shows we don’t have to be at our best to beat teams in this league. They hit the bar and Sels had one shot to save – which he pushed out straight into the path of a striker. Still not sure about him tbh. Ritchie was my motm by a distance, despite the two from Gayle. Not sure how defences will cope with him in full flow. 100% a PL footballer. Thought PL officials were bad, but this lot are far worse. 😉 All in all a decent game and great result. Hopefully this will kick start our season.

Highlights Toon Army just in case you missed it.

Good win but we still need a few more signings to strengthen the squad. Its amazing, couple more wins and we are in the top half.

I also think it’s great to see Rafa using the rotation of the squad as well. They all play their part over the course of the season, and that is why they’re at the club. The players are all learning a system of zones to play in so they can be interchangeable throughout the year.

Just because players don’t play, they’re not ‘dropped’, they’re rotated. It should limit some overuse injuries and it means players coming in are more familiar with playing with their teammates on a competitive basis, limiting the negative impact of a player who has to miss some games – you’re not just relying on a best eleven and the pitfalls that accompany it.

The players also know they are relied upon by the manager and the squad and will be called up fresher when they do play.

They all didn’t look as if they were fearing straying from their instructions as much today. They had more intent to do well – rolled up their sleeves and got to work so-to-speak. Snappier closing down and once they won the wall back and looking to change into attack.

A lot better than Saturday, but still a lot more developmental progression to go.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Mitro involved. Ritchie’s quality is exactly what he needs.

Blackley….. I liked the look of Hayden from the start. I think he will be a good signing for us. Couldn’t understand why you crabbed him last week.

With Mitrovic, Gayle, Armstrong and Perez, do we really need a striker at the moment?

I’d much rather see a couple of wingers brought in or a LB and AM.

Mitrovic and Gayle will ruin most teams in this league. If injuries occur, I think with Armstrong and Perez they are decent enough to play up there for a handful of games.

    Toon prodigy

I reliable late reply, & there’s a chance you u get to read this, but I thought I’d reply anyway.

It is imperative we get another target man to hold up play. Mitrovic can’t play the whole season alone. 46 game season.

Last time in the championship we had Harwood & Carroll. Also we had shola ameobi who was our highest scorer.

Also with one more target man we will have the perfect combo of 1 big man & 1 small man at all time.
    Mitrovic, gayle
    New target man & perez.

Armstrong can come on last 10 or 20 mins in games were wining for experience. I wouldn’t bring him on if we were losing a game 1-0, it would be to much burden on his shoulder. I’d rather rely on experience.

The young lad can be a top striker one day, but he’s not ready for championship yet. Best way is to have him integrated in a winning team. The confidence will rub off him.
