Who Was Newcastle’s Man Of The Match In 4-1 Win?

9:59 pm, Wednesday, August 17th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 58 Comments

Two goals from Dwight Gayle (69, 89) and one each from Isaac Hayden (20) and Matt Ritchie (penalty 50) gave Newcastle a comfortable 4-1 win tonight against Reading.

But it wasn’t until after Ciaran Clark who was making his debut had given away a penalty in stoppage time in the first half – we have now conceded in stoppage time in the first half in every single game so far this season.

But it was just what we needed – a good 4-1 win and we now have 3 points from 3 games.

We’re on our way – hopefully.

Nicky Parker has streamed the last couple of games live from the ground on
decent stream – I listened to radio while watching although radio was a few second

  • 2 mindshaft // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:00 PM

    Hayden looked quite tidy tonight

  • 3 Rotonda heights // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:02 PM

that’s the best periscope stream i’ve seen yet, but how can you get rid of the continuous comments on the left hand side of screen. is there a way

  • 4 Thump // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:02 PM

Hayden, Ritchie, and Shelvey for me. Went for Shelvey based entirely on his second half. Forcing things to happen, getting in where he shouldn’t.

goof was the best of the 5 when he came and as i said earlier he will be good in this league as he seems to know how english footy is, not just trying here and there but at the very least putting a shift in which the others never did

hayden by the sounds of things but shelvey to sounded good and ofcourse our new number 9 doing wat he should a screamer and a tap in perfect

  • 8 SPRINGY // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:05 PM

few people slagging off the centrebacks….yes not a great start by most..mbemba apart, but hanley it was his first game with very little pre-season,clark… first game and lascelles has probably let the captaincy effect his game….if they are still dodgy 5-6 games in then fair enough have a pop but we need to apply a bit of patience with some players.

  • 9 msk21dec // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:06 PM

Make of this what you will but… Last season as soon as janmaat got injured and anita went rb we started winning. De ja vu again this season. We really need to get rid of janmaat. Not surprised no ones bid for him

    aye wat knee said?

Pleased to see Shelvey played well – he’s our one midfielder who actually has some vision and range of passing.

  • 14 SPRINGY // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:08 PM

i would like a left winger to come in,but with the knockeart signing all quiet and aarons signing a new deal+goofy coming in out the cold….i wonder if they are not bothering with a left winger right now??

  • 15 Jail for Ashley // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:08 PM

Don’t know how the Sky commentator can say he doesn’t think that they (us)^can handle the expectations of the crowd after three games when we don’t even know who ‘they’ are yet. The Team is not the finished article and they may well grow in to it.

  • 16 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:08 PM

When Janmaat was injured at the end of last season, the defence performed better, conceded less, and the team as a whole improved. Anita plays RB today instead of Janmaat, and lo and behold, our first win. A resounding one at that. To me, it screams that some element of Janmaats play unbalances the side as a whole. For me,Anita has to play there, unless Gamez is ready to take over. Convert Janmaat into a winger. He spends most of his time high up the pitch anyway.

  • 17 ShirebrookToon // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:08 PM

Shelvey was one of the standouts tonight

  • 18 Rotonda heights // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:09 PM

    Many thanks both

  • 19 Jail for Ashley // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:10 PM

Yes, at long last competition for places. Lascelles will be hurting he got dropped and will bust a gut to.get his place back. He’d have played tonight regardless in times gone by.

  • 20 toon kk // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:10 PM

Mitrovic will be a beast in the championship, if he gets the service and he can behave himself.

  • 21 WWSBRD // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:11 PM

Nar I think the club will know they still need a winger, Goofy was behind Anita on the wing before today so he cant be seen that well imo

I think itll depend on Sissoko, surely our deadline day for him is coming up soon so if he stays then I doubt we see another winger coming in

  • 22 Rotonda heights // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:11 PM

Spot on re – janmatt. have always thought anita has played well and much better than him at RB.
Janmatt is poor defender and wasteful going forward. hadyn looked good tonight.

  • 23 ShirebrookToon // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:11 PM

Took me a while to work it out as it’s annoying

  • 24 Yo-yo // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:12 PM

I’m sure someone’s posted that Anita at RB and Janmatt RW could be a pretty good option.

  • 25 manxpie // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:13 PM

ycmiu and yet dummett gets all the abuse and always has,
and wat i have been saying for ages and get same abuse lol
it is only because he runs up the pitch same with santon same with hiadara
they are defenders 1st and foremost i blame the spanish tbh !

  • 26 Rotonda heights // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:13 PM

difficult one with mitro. do you change a 4-1 winning team. we played some good stuff on the deck tonight.

  • 27 Roppa // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:13 PM

Rotunda, if you’re watching Persicope on a PC / Laptop, to hide the comments & hearts simply press the ‘h’ key (h to hide)

  • 28 WWSBRD // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:13 PM

Anitas best position is on the bench…of another club ideally

  • 29 JamesToon // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:15 PM

If Perez doesn’t put better performances in, then we could play Mitro up front with Gayle just off him, tonight though was the closest to 442 that we’ve got under Rafa, and it worked

  • 30 Munster Mag // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:16 PM

Great result and delighted for gayle . This guy has potential and will thrive beside a bigger man. I have a tenner on him for top scorer. I read a Readi g article on here and they said 4-1 really flattered us. Doesnt matter either way.up and running. Well done rafa and co ,no complaints from me tonite. Hope we can get those other players now.

  • 31 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:16 PM

Yeah Dummet gets blamed for alsorts. Wasn’t he the second gunman behind the Grassy Knoll?

Yeah i’ve seen that suggested, too. It would be worth a try if we end up short of wingers. I just don’t have confidence when Janmaat is at RB. He is clumsy at times, and often out of position.

  • 32 Belfast // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:16 PM

    Anita in!!

  • 33 JamesToon // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:17 PM

What did everyone think of the Shelvey/Hayden partnership tonight? Thought Shelvey was much better defensively, and both provided a good pivot, one gets forward one gets back.

  • 34 Toon Tang // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:17 PM

    Cant find the goals peoples.

Where do I locate them please?

  • 35 manxpie // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:17 PM

debuchy was good at both tbh but that is wat you need but to praise a full back just because he tries attacking doesn’t win you games

  • 36 Jail for Ashley // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:17 PM

Ha ha, I think you better get used to little Vurn I think Rafa likes him 😀

  • 37 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:17 PM

A Reading article would say that, wouldn’t it 😀

  • 38 jimmysmith // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:17 PM

Have concerns about Gayle up top on his own, but 3 in 2 is sterling stuff and difficult to argue with. Great result and a desperately needed one. Pleased Hayden played well too as it looks like Rafa really rates him and that he’s been marked as a mainstay. I suppose because he can break up play and pass efficiently having been schooled under Wenger. HWTL

  • 39 Munster Mag // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:18 PM

Wws i dont agree. I like anita but deffo not as a right midfield.

  • 40 Toonces // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:19 PM

My take on Janmaat is that while he can go forward quite well he has a problem with the diagonal pass when trying to beat the opposing defender. He’ll too often make the diagonal pass in a way that it is telegraphed to the defender but Janmaat never believes it will be intercepted and the pass is cut out while he is bombing forward expecting the return pass beyond the defender. Results in Janmaat caught well out of position and opposition hits us on the counter. He does this far too often and leaves us exposed. Last season and early in this one (fulham game) he also looked slow to me and off the pace so opposition wingers have been taking him on and beating him.

  • 41 SPRINGY // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:19 PM

club should say to sissoko if no one comes in by mid of next week he’s not going anywhere…coz we wont be able to replace him….can see it being a last minute deadline day deal where we have but cant get no one……again.

  • 42 Munster Mag // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:20 PM

Rotunda i agree. I hate janmaat. Slow and stupid. Wud far prefer anita there if end of last season was anything to go by.

  • 43 m1c4a3l // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:20 PM

Hello, I went with Hayden tonight. Great to see our number 9 on the score sheet tonight. I said the result would come tonight and I think this will be the catalyst to our season with a win against Bristol and Blackburn. HWTL!

  • 44 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:20 PM

Anita is never going to be a world class player, but he is a long way better than some give him credit for.

  • 45 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:21 PM

  • 46 Belfast // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:21 PM

Hopefully with any luck we go on a little winning run now. Tough game on Saturday though.

  • 47 WWSBRD // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:21 PM

I, upsettingly, think ur right…Anita is still crap though, back up RB

If our full backs going forward end up Dummett and Anita am not sure what I will do

  • 48 Thump // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:21 PM

@Ron: aye mate, in the Irish at the minute waiting for the traffic to die down!

  • 49 manxpie // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:22 PM

rotonda by the sounds of it there were a few good balls in the box that perez didn’t quite get tonight so hopefully mitro will add but we defo need at least 2 more attackers

lol ycmiu and as for brexit wat a kernt!

  • 50 WWSBRD // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:22 PM

U can like him, doesnt make him a good footballer

  • 51 SPRINGY // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:23 PM

aye looks like hayden and shelvey had a little word with themselves and each other to try and claim them 2 positions….they were’nt fantastic but a vast improvement to what we have seen recently….hopefully thats just the start and they get better.

  • 52 Munster Mag // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:23 PM

James if shelvey plays well it will have a huge influence on our season. Its vital. He could be worth 10 points.did i sound like schteve there 🙂

  • 53 Thump // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:25 PM

Anita had a decent game, but definitely not the best game he’s ever played. I hate this fad of full backs standing off – I remember us complaining about Simmo standing off when we first got promoted. he seems aggressive in comparison!

  • 54 Toonces // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:25 PM

Some of the game stats make Reading look like unlucky losers: 58% possession to 42 for NUFC. 13 shots (3 on) but we had 11 (7 on). When we had the lead we probably sat back a bit and let them try and break us down – skewing the possession stats. And it sounded in the late part of the 1st half and early 2nd they had the carry of the play but games will ebb and flow. Anyway 4-1 is 4-1.

  • 55 geordie157 // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:26 PM

How did gouffran do? Did he do enough to start again on Saturday?

I like anita but still feel that we need better fullbacks

  • 56 manxpie // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:26 PM

so how many of our new signings are dog shite now and how many were carrs i’m confused?

  • 57 beautifulmind // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:26 PM

Following tonights cracking result how about this team for the weekend. Thinking about counter attacking tactics
    Anita Mbemba lascelles Dummet
    Janmat Hayden Shelvey Ritchie

  • 58 Fostino // Aug 17, 2016 at 10:31 PM

Didn’t see the match but good to see galye score. I felt once he signed he coukd get 20 goals this season.

Some interesting changes. I think clark demonstrated his rash decision making by giving away a penalty so I think we still dont have our cb pairing yet.

I think janmaat at rw and rithchie should be tried to give us 2 wingers who can crate and cross. I do rate janmaat but maybe he is not defensive enough for Rb. Can’t understand why jesus hasn’t been selected there yet. Maybe mbabu could stake a claim or sterry….seems most here don’t fancy anita for that position. Goofy at lw is not good enough and rolando doesn’t seem to be quite ready yet either

Good to see shelvey and hayden form a good paentership. ..Really need shelvey to step up.

As I didn’t see the match can anyone tell me how dummett and perez played.
