Two goals from Dwight Gayle (69, 89) and one each from Isaac Hayden (20) and Matt Ritchie (penalty 50) gave Newcastle a comfortable 4-1 win tonight against Reading.
But it wasn’t until after Ciaran Clark who was making his debut had given away a penalty in stoppage time in the first half – we have now conceded in stoppage time in the first half in every single game so far this season.
But it was just what we needed – a good 4-1 win and we now have 3 points from 3 games.
We’re on our way – hopefully.
Isaac Hayden after scoring first goal after 20 minutes
He looks happy

Comment #4Hayden, Ritchie, and Shelvey for me. Went for Shelvey based entirely on his second half. Forcing things to happen, getting in where he shouldn’t.

goof was the best of the 5 when he came and as i said earlier he will be good in this league as he seems to know how english footy is, not just trying here and there but at the very least putting a shift in which the others never did
hayden by the sounds of things but shelvey to sounded good and ofcourse our new number 9 doing wat he should a screamer and a tap in perfect

few people slagging off the centrebacks….yes not a great start by most..mbemba apart, but hanley it was his first game with very little pre-season,clark… first game and lascelles has probably let the captaincy effect his game….if they are still dodgy 5-6 games in then fair enough have a pop but we need to apply a bit of patience with some players.

Comment #9Make of this what you will but… Last season as soon as janmaat got injured and anita went rb we started winning. De ja vu again this season. We really need to get rid of janmaat. Not surprised no ones bid for him

i would like a left winger to come in,but with the knockeart signing all quiet and aarons signing a new deal+goofy coming in out the cold….i wonder if they are not bothering with a left winger right now??

Comment #15Don’t know how the Sky commentator can say he doesn’t think that they (us)^can handle the expectations of the crowd after three games when we don’t even know who ‘they’ are yet. The Team is not the finished article and they may well grow in to it.

Comment #16When Janmaat was injured at the end of last season, the defence performed better, conceded less, and the team as a whole improved. Anita plays RB today instead of Janmaat, and lo and behold, our first win. A resounding one at that. To me, it screams that some element of Janmaats play unbalances the side as a whole. For me,Anita has to play there, unless Gamez is ready to take over. Convert Janmaat into a winger. He spends most of his time high up the pitch anyway.

Yes, at long last competition for places. Lascelles will be hurting he got dropped and will bust a gut to.get his place back. He’d have played tonight regardless in times gone by.

Nar I think the club will know they still need a winger, Goofy was behind Anita on the wing before today so he cant be seen that well imo
I think itll depend on Sissoko, surely our deadline day for him is coming up soon so if he stays then I doubt we see another winger coming in

Spot on re – janmatt. have always thought anita has played well and much better than him at RB.
Janmatt is poor defender and wasteful going forward. hadyn looked good tonight.

Comment #29If Perez doesn’t put better performances in, then we could play Mitro up front with Gayle just off him, tonight though was the closest to 442 that we’ve got under Rafa, and it worked

Comment #30Great result and delighted for gayle . This guy has potential and will thrive beside a bigger man. I have a tenner on him for top scorer. I read a Readi g article on here and they said 4-1 really flattered us. Doesnt matter either way.up and running. Well done rafa and co ,no complaints from me tonite. Hope we can get those other players now.

Yeah Dummet gets blamed for alsorts. Wasn’t he the second gunman behind the Grassy Knoll?

Yeah i’ve seen that suggested, too. It would be worth a try if we end up short of wingers. I just don’t have confidence when Janmaat is at RB. He is clumsy at times, and often out of position.

Comment #33What did everyone think of the Shelvey/Hayden partnership tonight? Thought Shelvey was much better defensively, and both provided a good pivot, one gets forward one gets back.

Comment #38Have concerns about Gayle up top on his own, but 3 in 2 is sterling stuff and difficult to argue with. Great result and a desperately needed one. Pleased Hayden played well too as it looks like Rafa really rates him and that he’s been marked as a mainstay. I suppose because he can break up play and pass efficiently having been schooled under Wenger. HWTL

Comment #40My take on Janmaat is that while he can go forward quite well he has a problem with the diagonal pass when trying to beat the opposing defender. He’ll too often make the diagonal pass in a way that it is telegraphed to the defender but Janmaat never believes it will be intercepted and the pass is cut out while he is bombing forward expecting the return pass beyond the defender. Results in Janmaat caught well out of position and opposition hits us on the counter. He does this far too often and leaves us exposed. Last season and early in this one (fulham game) he also looked slow to me and off the pace so opposition wingers have been taking him on and beating him.
