It’s An Away Game Today – So It’s Worrying

Since Rafa came into the club he has presided over 13 competitive games and 6 of those have been away games.

Of those six we have lost 4 and drawn 2, so we still have to get a win away from home under Rafa – so maybe today at Bristol City?

Certainly if we are going to be promoted next May we have to start winning a lot of games on the road and the sooner the better.

rafa benitez reading

Rafa Benitez at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night

In fact the last time we won away from home was back in December when we won 2-1 with a stoppage time goal from Ayoze Perez.

And we then lost 10 successive away games before we stopped the rot at Liverpool on April 23rd, and after being 2-0 down at the break we came back for a very good 2-2 draw.

This is what Rafa has said about away games:

“Yes, sometimes it is character.” “Sometimes it’s a lot of things as well but I would like to be sure that we will pick the right players for the away games – and also for the home games – but this game maybe is too soon to prepare things because maybe we still don’t have the squad ready.”

“But I said the other day, after August 31 we have to be sure we have the team, we have the squad, and everybody has to know what they have to do and so we need to show the character at home, but also away.”

“I would like to say ‘yes, we are very close’ (to correcting our away form), because we have this game against Bristol, but it’s something we will have to see.”

“The team is training well, but when you have three games a week you do not have too much time to prepare things.”

“We are looking to cut out mistakes and we are doing things to analyse Bristol but we have not had too much time.”

“We will see but I am confident we will improve – we must improve – and I think we will but I will not say from this weekend, but over time I am sure that this team will be stronger away.”

“Tactically, the team will improve and everybody needs to know what they have to do.”

“If you have this then you can win games away; being organised and having a good counter attack or whatever, keeping the ball a little bit better, then you will have more chances to win.”

“There are so many games that you have to win away.”

It would not be good to lose today and we would have three defeats on our first four games.

We only lost four games all season the last time we played in the Championship under Chris Hughton and won 30 of them.

A win would be terrific and show we are on our way.

lesh , city of culture is not an award , it merely means that funds would be available to try and turn the sh’t hole into something that resembles a city . lets be honest , its going to take a few bob to get that place looking somewhere near decent , a new bridge for a start. Thats how i think it works anyway – could be wrong though

should we,should we be beware of the winbar curse????
feeling pessimist for this game, defense still shaky, sels instills fear and some players losing the ball too easily.Only hope these faults will be mended today and that we win.so we should say…howay the lads.

Will we ever be able to watch a game live this season? Is today’s even televised, I’ve checked the usual sites but no luck.

    Jakesome,
Our next home game is live as is the next away fixture followed by another one two games after that. So yes, you will be able to get to watch a live game.

Aye, although Larkin wasn’t even born there. Suppose they have a strong maritime culture and a got the likes of William Wilberforce who lead the charge to abolish the slave trade. A landlord of a pub that I found myself in there once, Ye Olde White Harte in their old town , claimed Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators plotted their scheme in what is now their restaurant seating area. He also told me a building nearby had the world’s smallest window, though I never went looking for it – such rich glazing culture!

shawcross at it again, for a player with a half decent reputation,he always does something bloody daft…at least the refs are pulling players up for pulling and holding….lets see how long that lasts and if it happens to the “big teams”in the league.

wonder what cb’s play today?….if we are to believe players are being rotated to suit each game as we’ve read then i would expect changes again…but if that was just a bit of flannel to get out of saying they were dropped, then it could be mbemba and clark again…will be interesting to see?

Can’t see why Clark would retain his spot. Hanley had the steadier debut out of the 2 and Rafa has been making positive noises about Lascelles and his potential return to the XI.

i hope he finds the 2 best cb,s quick and sticks with them, i don,t think theres as much need for rotation with cb,s as they don,t do as much running as wingers etc, i,m not sure which two are the best together yet

Judging by those comments it sounds like Rafa is giving licence for the players to lose today as he doesn’t expect us to win away so soon as we’ve had little time to prepare. But Rafa has been honest and I bet he didn’t mean it like that.

Just hope we don’t play too defensive and win away for a change.

Looking forward to the game and Brighton won’t be easy they are a good game so a win here would be massive.

i’m not sure anyone knows who the best two are up to now….mbemba has been the stand out player of the bunch up to now so he almost picks himself….the others for what ever reason, fitness, sharpness, quality or captaincy have a lot to do.

i think rafa using his head and trying to quell the expectations after the win wednesday,he seen what we seen or heard on wednesday we are not a confident side as yet…and look a little shaky because of it…..just my opinion though.

agree with mbemba springy, i like his style of play but not the best in the air, i think hanley is best in that department but not the quickest , should get the team sheet in 5 mins but i,m going for lascelles and mbemba to start

that would probably be my guess, rafa said bristol rely on high balls and set pieces so lascelles height might give him the edge, over clark and hanley, not so sure hanley is 100% fit yet as well tbh.

I’d go with Mbemba alongside Hanley at CB.

Diame, if fit enough, alongside Hayden in DM.

    Aarons in for Gouffran.

Good physicality and aerial ability which Rafa has marked up as a threat. Diame deeper to spring counters and Aarons given another chance, though he needs to do the basics of a winger first and foremost, beat a man and then supply.

Might switch out Anita too, if he deems their direct approach the main threat. Personally couldn’t tell you a thing about Bristol City!
