Rafa Benitez has just announced his team for the second away game of the season at Bristol City today and captain Jamaal Lascelles returns to the starting line-up and partners Chancel Mbemba at center-back.

Newcastle: Sels, Anita, Mbemba, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Hayden, Colback, Gouffran, Diame, Gayle
Subs: Darlow Dummett, Sterry, Hanley, Shelvey, Aarons, Perez

Ciaran Clark keeps his place in the side but moves to left-back and a fit again Mohamed Diame comes back into the side, while Vurnon Anita keeps his place at right back.

There’s no Daryl Janmaat so maybe the rumors he will leave Newcastle this month are true.

Yoan Gouffran keeps his place after a good hard-working game on Wednesday night against Reading.

The two holding midfielders are Isaac Hayden and local lad Jack Colback, who comes back into the side in place of Shelvey who is on the bench.

Young local lad Jamie Sterry is on the bench presumably in place of Daryl Janmaat and he’s a very good right-back in the making.

This is what Rafa has said about today’s opponents:

“From all the reports we have from them we know they are doing well and are a team that play with confidence.”

“All the reports say they are a good team. They are physically strong and good at set-pieces, throw-ins and corners.”

“They are good at long balls and win second balls. They are a team that play with high tempo and it’ll be tough. We know it will be difficult.”

“We practiced on Friday and we don’t have too much time but we said that we have to be ready for a team with this type of approach.”

“They are a team who know what strengths they have.”

Almost seven fans in ten think we will win this game this afternoon.

the dummett haters will be happy…not so much the clark haters!lol

  • 2 MAUTITOON // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:09 PM

would rather have shelvey there in stead of colback though.

  • 3 JDdubai // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:10 PM

Dont mind the playing of a CB at LB – should mean we are stronger in the air and hopefully at set pieces.

Perez needed to take the bench until he either stpes up or fades away – should have spent the summer in the gym.

It does highlight the areas where we are lacking though, Rafa will hopefully come through this week with what we need.

    mautitoon
colback cant pass like shelvey, but will graft more…i guess thats why he’s in….use colback to get a foot hold in the game then maybe bring shelvey in later to create something.

  • 5 ShirebrookToon // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:13 PM

    No Gamez

  • 6 jasper // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:14 PM

Not a Clark hater, too early to judge, but I was at the game in midweek and he was deeply unimpressive. Not just the mistake. Seems weak in the air, didn’t seem up for it and didn’t even put the challenge in much of the time. As a result their CF managed at least half a dozen flick ons which could have been v dangerous. Nor do I remember a tackle.
Overall reminded me of Saylor in his gait and his being error prone, without Saylor’s redeeming features, such as winning headers and generally getting stuck in.
On what I’ve seen Lascalles every time.

    SPRINGY
agree with u,but just hope that it does not stagnate our football since i doubt goofy will venture too much up field and that will perhaps leave ritchie and diame as our only creative outlet and if city have them closely marked,i fear the worst.but i hope i’m totally wrong.strange how these away games instill uncertainty in within me.

Any foreign channels for the match?

  • 9 Nufc-83 // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:16 PM

Dummett is pretty bad tbf but Clarke is 100x worse so not at all impressed with him at lb!!

Goufffran is terrible and shouldn’t even be playing in league 2 let alone in our first team wish Aarons was starting but oh well the rest of the team in happy with so let’s do this!!!

  • 10 AncientC // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:16 PM

    where the hell is tiote?

  • 14 SUTTY1978 // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:18 PM

With Colback playing, we will get overrun in midfield. Can’t remember many games where he has played that we have dominated in the middle of the pitch.
Would prefer Diame dropping back into his natural midfield position and Perez, Aarons or Armstrong at No.10

  • 15 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:19 PM

Shelvey will still be building his fitness. Put a lot of work in over the summer to improve his endurance and thus mobility over the 90, but it’ll take time before he can play many games in quick succession.

He started from a very low bar, had a body like chewed up bubblegum last season, in his early 20s as PL footballer that wasn’t good enough.

Hopefully we’ll see (hear) more of Diame today and Hayden puts in another solid all-action display.

  • 16 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:19 PM

    Sels
    Anita, Mbemba, Lascelles, Clark
    Hayden, Colback
    Ritchie Diame Gouffran
    Gayle

Suppose it will switch to 433 on the attack. Diame will push back to help out hayden & colback when defending. Well that’s what I feel is best. Box to box in that position.

  • 17 Pardews Priceless Bulls#*t // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:19 PM

Alright nufc-83 put your safety helmet back on now and use your inside voice eh?

  • 18 JP...from The Rock // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:20 PM

I think a draw would be a good result for us today. Can’t see us winning this one today.

  • 19 SPRINGY // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:21 PM

hail mentioned earlier that it could be a 3-5-2…that may be the case the clark, mbemba, and lascelles….ya never know?

  • 20 mindshaft // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:21 PM

There will be no online streams as no U.K or overseas T.V take 3:00pm championship games – best you can hope for is that a fan at the game will stream it via periscope.tv
Failing that it’s highlights on channel 5 at 9 tonight

  • 21 Pardews Priceless Bulls#*t // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:23 PM

Thank you mineshaft. At least somebody has the common decency to answer in a courteous manner

  • 22 mindshaft // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:23 PM

We must have sold Tiote or be in negotiations – shame as he could really do a job in the championship – I’d prefer him to stay and leave for nowt next year ( given we’ll get a few million for him )

  • 25 jasper // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:25 PM

Just come back from Greece, used a VPN service to access BBC and Sky. Caught Fulham game (unfortunately….)
As well as making me appear to be in the UK it also gives me the options of USA, Canada or Aussie. So are there any expats out there who could arise of any free to air services in those countries that show matches, or failing that any reasonable and safe subscription services that show the games?
    Thanks

  • 26 msk21dec // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:27 PM

Glad if janmaat goes. Hope colback stays back and hayden goes box to box. Diame to drop and help midfield. Looks like counter attack today

  • 27 juan // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:28 PM

As much as I hate to say it. Our squad looks piss poor. Colback & lascelles return? Why they both crap. Can’t see us going up this year.

  • 28 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:29 PM

    mmm
    Don’t know what to think??????
Looks like going for a draw.

would of stuck with Shelvey and Dummett – might of with Clark to

To many defensive changes for my liking

  • 29 stephen1971 // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:30 PM

goofy to have another solid game, shelvey on for colback 2nd half and arrons on later on , 3-1 the toon

  • 30 posada // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:31 PM

Rafa might surprise us with three at the back and Hayden sitting in front of them.
    It’s possible.
Anita right WB. Colback left WB.

  • 31 SPRINGY // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:32 PM

looks like he’s just wanting to start the game solid, try not to give away a early goal and take it from there….just an opinion like.

  • 33 Belfast // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:33 PM

In nufc83s defence Ppb – I think the same question has been asked about a million times and mindshafts explanation has been given a million times. 🙂

  • 34 Spoof // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:34 PM

Its a more defensive side than what we had against Reading, it’s more like the Fulham and Huddersfield sides, I just hope his tactics aren’t the same as Rafa gave those games away due to his approach, Colback for Shelvey and Diame for Perez will naturally bring a more defensive system, I don’t like the side, again to defensive for me, Diame for Shelvey and leaving Perez in would have been better for me, I just hope that Colback and Diame are allowed to get forward and regularly at that, if not then we could be in trouble again, why so defensive, it’s Bristol City and not Man City ffs.

  • 35 Belfast // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:34 PM

I think Jib has even given up the ghost. He usually pops on with 10 links that don’t work.

  • 37 Belfast // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:36 PM

  • 38 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:37 PM

    Could be: 3-4-3

    _______________Sels
    ______Mbemba_Lascelles_Clark
    Anita______________________Colback
    ___________Hayden_Diame
    Ritchie_______Gayle_______Gouffran

Would be cool but highly unlikely.

  • 42 brklyngeordie // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:38 PM

Team IMO is better without Janmaatt if true he is on the move won’t be big loss Anita and Sterry can replace him…Not excited to see Colback but if we are having tough time breaking them down I’m sure Shelvey will be put in trust Rafa knows what he is doing #InRafaWeTrust

This is a team set up for a draw if evr I have seen one.

No pace. No creativity. No bloody incisiveness.

Forget the draw….I think we will lose.

  • 46 Spoof // Aug 20, 2016 at 2:40 PM

I never gave 3-4-3 a thought, that could be a possibility and it would give us more attacking options, I just hope that we don’t sit back and play too deep as it was dreadful at Fulham when we done that.

Behave munster, he’s going out on loan because he wants him to play more games than he’d get here right now. He’s 19 mate, not 29. He’s going out for half the season, nothing more. I know why he’s doing it, but I don’t agree. Not my choice. You watch how many goals he scores wherever he goes, he’ll be back. If he didn’t rate him, he’d keep him here. Rafa’s decided he’s not ready, it’s Arma’s job now to prove him wrong. No point keeping him at this stage when he needs to play regularly – hence the six month loan.

Springy you are wrong lol he has only recently (I mean in last 2-3 years) started playing at full back and he says himself he is a CB. For me will struggle at CB though due to his height but I guess cannavaro was one of the best so who knows. One of the things I was impressed with when he played was his timing of the tackle and his aggression. Fingers crossed he really makes the step up.

Between Sels and Clark I doubt we’ll keep a clean sheet today, but I hope I’m wrong! Once Gamez is up to speed I think he’ll be in rotation at left back with Dummett and Clark will be primarily used as a CB. Sels has got to be under serious pressure now with Darlow and Krul (soon) to displace him in goal. Watching Sels in pre-season had me worried so I’m surprised he was our starting keeper with Darlow doing well last season and also having Championship experience under his belt.

Shocking comment from Kets by the way. Absolutely no need for that at all. You’re in the nufc-83 bracket for me now.

And by the way, before you wonder why nufc-83 is being mentioned, posting links that you knew didn’t work to troll the blog and lying about watching games was bad enough, but then calling someone a ‘fag’ was a disgusting show of homophobia. I’ve marked your book for that one.

WE bloggers all talk about how crap these english managers are.
maclown and his poor england record
pardew and those very long bad runs
    BFS and that long ball
hogson and his failure to beat the easiest of teams

why don’t any of you bloggers bother trying to be manager it would make england proud to finally geta decent english manager and you all act as though you can do better.

Pardew at 3/1 to get hoofed, decent odds, might be worth a skydiver

  • 381 welshgeordie9 // Aug 20, 2016 at 5:22 PM

Good result today, yes it was only 1 goal and Bristiol City played much better in the 2nd half but you are going to get that in the championship, sometimes it’s about grinding results out plus this will be good experience for players that’s never player In this league.

    toonking

Are those comments from the bloggers wrong?

We never claim to be better at the job mate we just know how bad they are at it, compared to others.

I’d take a scrappy one nil over any kind of loss. People have to remember, this is a process, instant result should not be expected.

We lost the first two, won the next two. Neither win was convincing, but give it time, if we keep wining, it will become convincing.

One more point I want to make is about the keeper sels. He was ment to be the best keeper coming out of Belgium. Ppl are already demanding him to be dropped after a nervy start here.

This is ppl demanding instant results. It all about process. I remember when I used to laugh at man united fans cause there new keeper de gea looked terrible. They said he was the best keeper coming our of Spain. Let’s just say I’m not the one laughing anymore!

My mates ex wants me to come round to her house. My mates mum wants a two year casual relationship. Some bloke offered me £20 to buy a drink last night. The girl from last night wanted to bang on the first date. Had to let a few down because I just don’t have the time at the moment.

Was a joke which has been taken a bit too far. Don’t take it personally.
