Newcastle In Shock Move For Defender

8:35 am, Sunday, August 21st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

The Mail are reporting that Newcastle want to sign Tottenham’s American full-back DeAndre Yedlin.

DeAndre signed for Tottenham in the summer of 2014 after impressing for the US in the World Cup in Brazil and he was signed from his home town club – the Seattle Sounders.

DeAndre Yedlin

DeAndre Yedlin – 39 times capped US International
On loan at Sunderland last season

The 39 times capped American international was on loan at Sunderland last season and played 25 times in the Premier League, but he seems to have no future at Tottenham under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

While DeAndre principally plays at right back he has some speed and can also play on the right wing.

The report is that Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez wants cover at right-back since Daryl Janmaat could well be leaving Newcastle before the end of the summer transfer window with West Ham, Watford and Napoli among the clubs interested.

Daryl is likely to want to leave the second division club before the end of August.

Rafa has made a practice of bringing in players to replace departing players before they leave the club and that could happen with Yedlin coming in prior to Janmaat leaving.

But Yedlin is also in demand from other clubs with Aston Villa reportedly ready to bid for the American a couple of days ago; Hull City and Derby County also interested in the 23 year-old.

Yedlin is available for around £4M and he seems to fit the mold of players Rafa Benitez is looking for.

Talented young players who have the ability to improve under Rafa’s coaching at Newcastle and can become better players for Newcastle in the future – they also have to be available at a reasonable price.

With the news breaking yesterday that Daryl Janmaat could be leaving the club and the fact he didn’t even travel with the team yesterday – suggests he could be on his way,

Yedlin could well be his replacement.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Seemed quite decent last season, haven’t seen much of him. Another attacking full back, not sure if he’s any good defensively.

Do we need him. Personally I’d like to see sterry and mbabu battle it out for right back with gamez and anita also decent options. It’s still left back that needs sorting.

    Geordie157

I would give Mbabu a shout at left back mate.Looked comfortable there against Chelsea and has played at left back pre season with rave reviews from Beardsley.
It’s just his injuries that are blighting his career at present, But is still a better shout than Dummett

If Janmaay leaves, I think we are well enough covered at this level but if we get promoted we will probably need to recruit then.

    Expat
Do you think as the squad stands, we would be good enough to stay in the Pl if we won automatic promotion this season ??

    Re Mbabu

very good young player with loads of potential but just can’t stay fit

I wouldn’t be sorry to see the back of Jaanmat if we had a replacement, you have to seriously question the mentality of a player who deliberately gets himself sent off when he’s being turned over.

Yedlin was one of only a few who impressed at Sunderland last season, he would be a huge upgrade on the hopeless Janmaat I really hope this deal goes ahead, the added bonus is that it would really pee off the sad ones, developed at Sunderland to benefit Newcastle, now that is how it should be !!!!

How Willo was blamed for doing it before Jaanmatt actually did do it was a disgrace and summed John Carver up. I hope I’m home for the Wolves game to give Willo a good reception if he’s playing.

    Jazzyp,
I do with a few additions, Rafa has carefully put a squad together to get us promoted and hold it’s own next year if we do.

Sissoko, Collocini and Jaanmat three players that didn’t/don’t want to be here and the three that committed the disgraceful act of getting sent off.

    JAZZY

That would depend on a number if yhings but as it stands, yes. I do think so.

To be honest, we should never have been relefated in the first place and probably would not have been uf we had got Rafa in a month earlier than we did.

    SPOOF

The full vack from Spurs I really would like is Kieran Trippier. I wanted us to sign him before Spurs did.

In for Yedlin…us intl with pace! Rafa can get him to another level!

  • 15 NUFCmagpie // Aug 21, 2016 at 6:03 PM

As a Seattle Sounders/Newcastle United fan from outside Seattle I really hope this deal goes through. It was so cool to watch Obafemi Martins play over here and Yedlin would be perfect for Newcastle United. His pace is unreal both in attack and defense.
