Two goals in 3 minutes from Newcastle with two goals from Ayoze Perez after 44 minutes and 47 minutes was enough to give Newcastle a comfortable 2-0 win tonight against League Two Cheltenham Town.
But in the first half Newcastle lost two players – Rolando Aarons and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the first half and unfortunately the unlucky Aarons was taken off on a stretcher and unfortunately it looks a serious injury – let’s hope if isn’t.
Mitro looks to have had a concussion so hopefully he will be OK for Saturday.
Ayoze Perez congratulated after scoring
And after 59 minutes Dwight Gayle was taken off after his head had been bandaged and it looked like a precautionary move after taking a heavy knock, so let’s hope he is OK for the game against Brighton on Saturday.
Perez had been injured and he came back on the field with a bandage around his forehead and he hit a wonderful shot into the corner of the net – a good time to score.
And then it was good work from substitute Dwight Gayle who went through aftre being gifted the ball by the Cheltenham defense and then unselfishly squared the ball to Perez who tapped the ball home for his second goal this season.
And after 81 minutes Perez had a wonderful chance to get his hat-trick following excellent work form Jonjo Shelvey – but Ayoze put the ball over the bar.
Newcastle were the better side tonight and were not really pressed and these games are almost like no-win situation but Newcastle were professional enough to get the win.
Jesus Gamez looked very tidy in his debut and this man can do a job for Newcastle this season in either full-back position.
Karl Darlow didn’t have much to do but what he did do he did well and came out and took a couple of crosses very nicely – we’ll have to wait and see if Karl keeps his place for Saturday’s very important game against Brighton.
So we go into the 3rd round of the EFL Cup and the draw is tomorrow night.
Update – After the game, Rafa Benitez said he thought both Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic would be OK for Saturday – that’s good news.
No additional news on Aarons though.
