8:49 pm, Saturday, August 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 55 Comments

Here are the highlights of today’s terrific 2-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion for those around the world who couldn’t get the game live.

We notice that happens a lot this season.

Both goals came from set plays!

Who is that Yoan Gouffran – what a terrific strike after 24 minutes that hit the cross-bar – Rafa has made him into a new player.

Crystal Palace and Sunlun in the bottom 5 – who are all on 1 point in the PL.

The All-blacks give the Wallabies another good slapping.

The Toon in the top 4 of the Championship.

    What a great Saturday !!!!!

That was probably one of the best performances seen at SJP in 3 – 4 years. We looked more than capable, very composed and we played as a team. We even knocked it about for what seemed like 5 minute without them ever touching the ball.
    Anita – Un-Pardewed
    Goufran – Un-Pardewed
    Summer – Un-Pardewed

    What a brilliant afternoon.

  • 3 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:58 PM

knockaert didn’t even try to get past dummett in the second half btw he turned inside just past the halfway line everytime
so again the people who say they went to every game who say he gets skinned every time has he totally improved in a week?
just asking as i have never seen him get skinned apart from a couple of times in a few games

  • 4 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:00 PM

It looks like the team is starting to play the way Rafa wants them too which is a hard working team who are compact and solid at the back who will suffocate the other team! It then allows us to play a more expansive game some of our moves in the first half were excellent and we should have been out of sight before half time!

Apart from Knockers who had some moments Brighton looked pretty average would anyone else in their team get in ours ? Maybe Dunk but that would be it and this was us without Gayle and Mitrovic as well!

Once we get Yedlin and Lazaar on either flank we can properly batter teams from each side with pace

    Championship highlights starting now

Really? Oh god, this is what happens when we let the squads hairdresser go I suppose

Don’t worry lads, I’m sure that Rafa has a top notch Italian hairdresser lined up before the window closes.

  • 7 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:02 PM

    Love it. 🙂

  • 8 mattyNUFC // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:02 PM

    great performance

really didn’t think we’d pull it off, but credit to everyone

  • 9 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:03 PM

    Un- Pardewed, even!!

  • 10 mattyNUFC // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:04 PM

in fairness Dummett had one of his better games today. for knockaerts first shot at goal dummett gave him too much space on the byline which very well should have ended in a goal

the fact is we can do better than him, and most fans see it that way

  • 11 mattyNUFC // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:05 PM

all the new boys playing really well.

pleasantly surprised with Hayden as well. big future here for him

  • 12 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:05 PM

So will you drop Anita for Yedlin?

  • 13 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:06 PM

    An Italian one?

  • 14 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:07 PM

Dummett having a good game is symptomatic of what happens when you have competition for places and a manager who is not scared to drop anyone. It’s a breath of fresh air from the “Pardew Favourites” years

  • 15 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:08 PM

Yedlin stays out of the team until Anita starts crying about playing RB again for me but Lazaar comes straight into the team

  • 16 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:08 PM

yeah you could definitely see the change in style and brighton did well really in disrupting it by hoofing everywhere and then the ref by giving them fouls everytime
but the movement and passing was great and we are only gonna improve and to think our “star” player hasn’t kicked a ball lol

  • 17 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:12 PM

    GK – Sels, Darlow, Elliot

RB – Anita, Gamez, Yedlin Sterry

CB – Lascelles, Mbemba, Hanley, Clark

    LB – Lazaar, Dummett, Haidara,

CM – Hayden, Shelvey, Diame, Colback

    RW – Ritchie,

    LW – Gouffran, Aarons,

ST – Gayle, Mitro, Perez, Murphy

Still 2 wingers needed with Aarons injury record. A top quality one and a young/cheap/loan one.

Not sure Tiote will be away either. Seems like he’s been in the shadows for a long time. Would love to now what has really been going on with him.

Looking how well stocked we are at RB and given he came on there tonight, could see Yedlin being converted to a RW.

  • 18 Ron Knee // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:12 PM

Would you be referring to Rivière???

  • 19 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:13 PM

sorry matty but i can’t say for previous games as i haven’t seen them but every time i have seen dummett he hasn’t let much past him and most is in the prem and every player gets done once
it’s just the statement that “dummett gets skinned easily” i dont believe unless it is only in the last 5 games it has happened? and today it didn’t

  • 20 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:15 PM

ron bloody hell how did ya guess!? lol

  • 21 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:16 PM

Our best victories in the last few years have been when Anita has played not always because of him but he does contribute and I really like him at right back

Yedlin is rapid though it will offer something different but Anita will play plenty of games this season I hope he gets a new deal for a season or 2

Colback worries me though he just looks so average and gives away so many fouls the passing and moving between Shelvey , Hayden , Anita , Diame and Richie was excellent and Colback just doesn’t seem capable of that kind of play

Would love us to get Mccarthy as part of the Sissoko deal haha

  • 22 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:19 PM

ww i think lazaar has been signed as a LW tbh?
look at the shot on him plus his assists defo a LW like 🙂

  • 23 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:19 PM

If all u want from a LB is that they stand still, have very limited ability to pass, have little to no ball control and have a touch of height then Dummett is ur man

  • 24 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:20 PM

If Lazaar plays LW who plays LB? Because we haven’t got one

  • 25 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:22 PM

    Or French even.

  • 26 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:24 PM

But McCarthey isn’t a player for Sissoko’s dream team CP.

    Is he?

  • 27 Tsunki // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:25 PM

Dummett has improved because he has finally been reined in to doing his day job at last, at which he is reasonably good when he isn’t lumping aimless punts up the wing. 9 passes from Perez says it all, he’s too lightweight and can’t hold onto the ball, still waving his arms and shrugging his shoulders.

I hope the Shelvey of the last two games is the one we will continue to have. The FK simply removed all the Brighton players from the pitch and invited them to come back on when it was finished lol.

Diame is taking his time to get fit. He’s OK atm but he needs to get up to speed, he could be a real dynamo going forward.

Sels had what I would call a pretty decent game, good saves, did well to get his man sent off ha ha not the calamity I though he was shaping up to be.

Good work all round, only down side was Colback changed the dynamic and made it look like 10 v 10 last 15 minutes.

  • 28 Bambams // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:25 PM

We won’t have set players for all the games.
It’s such a long season you need a big squad and thus will prevent so many injuries we have had in previous seasons.

Fully expect Rafa to keep rotating the squad

Great for us as it keeps them fighting for a place

  • 29 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:26 PM

ww i want a LB that defends and defends well and then can pass to an actual LW who can move the ball forward
we havent had such since enrique
i know you hate dummett lol but he balances this team more than anyone plus he has not had 1 person to form a relationship with not one!
and tbf rafa likes the same it seems

  • 30 Tsunki // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:26 PM

I had draw as an optimistic punt today, was surprised they had their wind blown after the first goal, not at all the driving force Brighton were advertised. Feeling a little more optimistic about us today.

  • 31 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:27 PM

Ha ha thats Mccarthur ! Although he is decent as well!

The story going the rounds is Sissoko to Everton with Mccarthy to us ! Football manager style transfer although hes also been linked to signing with Celtic which would probably be his preferred option I imagine

  • 32 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:28 PM

Another improving team game today, and that’s without Mitro and Gayle, our main two up front.

Great to see Gouffran contributing to the team without being slated on here, as he was always better than the workhorse slogging it out in a line up and down the pitch, Jonas style – and Anita, who Rafa is comfortable with playing in a structured team.

Quality manager and we’re seeing a more balanced and fluid side develop.

Shelvey looked a lot more more athletic than usual. More mobile and sharper.

Diame seemed to be involved in a lot and put in another better performance.

The result itself was a very good one. Crowd were very good today as well.

On the Murphy signing, it’s fine as a backup stop-gap if that’s what Rafa thinks. He is a thoughtful and strategic decision. If he couldn’t get others, say Haller or Dost, then what do you do? Go with nobody or get a reliable(?) back up? He’s done just that and got the target man as backup to cover bases.

Main thing is get players in who can do a certain job for the team in a certain way and not miss out on them.

Anyway, a more than decent performance today I thought and great result against one of the top teams.

  • 33 mattyNUFC // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:28 PM

am i wrong to think that with Murphy and Laazar signing, we should probably get another attacking CM?

if Diame is injured, it’s only Perez in the hole (assuming Arma is gone on loan). think Judge would be an astute signing to make…..

  • 34 Tsunki // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:29 PM

I wonder if Dr. Shelvey will announce our new boy as “Lazaar” while doing air quotes with his fingers?

  • 35 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:30 PM

The Shelvey playing today was similar to the one I saw against Southend which is why I went for him as our MOS.

Covered loads of the pitch and barely a bad pass.

If Goufron had actually converted some of the close misses he’s had he’d be well in for top scorer as well, still time yet!!

  • 36 Tsunki // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:33 PM

Goofy looks loads happier getting into familiar forward positions. I think he’d start getting goals given a decent run there.

  • 37 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:34 PM

shelvey is cursed because he is english and known
if we’d signed a foreigner in january and he did the same there wouldn’t be even close to the shit he gets

  • 38 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:35 PM

just watching the arsenal game where they are 3-0 up and they bring on janmaat lol

  • 39 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:35 PM

U want an actual LB passing to an actual LW but ur answer to that here is to have a CB passing to a LB?

And I really don’t hate Dummett, I actually like him (there’s plenty of post from me in the archives touting him to be a good squad player and one we shouldn’t think of selling) him he’s a good solid CB but he’s awful at LB. he’s a big reason why we were relegated because we had no left side last season (not his fault we played him there but ended in the same way) so every team knew to ignore our left and focus on our right

  • 40 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:35 PM

    Just got in from match
    Absolutely knackered
    Great Win
    Sh*t ref
Not a Chris Hughton team that I can remember – tried the get in the TOON’s faces kick us instead of playing football.
My MOM was Goufran all over the park today tackled ran shot always available for the pass passed well which freed up space for Shelvey to do his tricks
Not far behind was Shelvey and Diame.
and I thought Perez battled away without much help upfront – did well with the lack of good ball he saw
Anita another good game at full back
Week points none really y – maybe Sells for his command of the six yard box and his punching.

  • 41 bettyswallocks // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:37 PM

I’ve been of the opinion for a while now that Perez just isn’t cut out for the English game. He’s a clever little goal poacher in and around the box but for the rest he offers nothing. He’s had enough time and opportunities to make a niche for himself and I just can’t see how he’s suddenly going to learn to retain the ball when he’s so easily dispossessed . Much prefer to have seen Arma given a chance.

  • 42 Jail for Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:39 PM

    Alles komt goed

  • 43 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:39 PM

The problem with Perez, who I think worked hard for the team today, is that he just doesn’t seem to be able to beat anyone in a one on one situation. Loses the ball more often than not.

  • 44 U.S Magpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:40 PM

Well Toon Army, for us not having two of our main strikers available that would have normally started the team showed others that we are a force to be reckoned with. It was a good statement against a team we have not had a good record against in the past few years. And I know Chris was thinking this would have been easier not having thoose two available. Toon Army on the Rise!!!!

  • 45 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:42 PM

Which is what Betty said just before me. 🙂

  • 46 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:42 PM

U make it to the game?

  • 47 geordiesteve520 // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:43 PM

Not a huge Daryl Murphy fan (in fact I think he’s toss) but I expect he’ll be our Marlon Harewood this season. An agin pro with experience to pass on about the league and a back up who will not whinge.

  • 48 JamesToon // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:44 PM

I’m not going to give up on Perez, he puts in 100% give him this season then we’ll see, maybe your right, but We don’t want to get rid of players who do want to be here and fight for us

  • 49 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:44 PM

    ww seriously a CB?
he’s played there less than 5 times lol
he plays LB for wales he has played over 60 games for us at LB
    HE IS A LB!
he didn’t play much last season so i agree he was a reason we were relegated but that is why
once he came back in we were unbeaten, again which points to balance
he is our best lb tell me anyone better?

  • 50 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:47 PM

charlie there we go maybe it shows that people in the stadium don’t see the best picture

sels was brilliant and the punches were very very needed btw

  • 51 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:47 PM

To be fair last season we collected near enough all of our points when Dummett was back fit it was the games where he was out that done it for us ! When Haidara played at the start we got nothing for near enough 8 games and then it was people out of position that cost us!

A squad player who gives 100% and will now have some proper competition for his place now

  • 52 Yo-yo // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:48 PM

If Murphy is a 10+5 guy, with good hold up play and a target man then great.
As Perez seems to be limited to a No10 role then we do need another big No9, especially with RafaRotation

  • 53 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:50 PM

His time as a CB was the only time he looked comfortable

    A better LB ok Lazaar

  • 54 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:51 PM

shh lee he’s a scape goat

  • 55 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 9:51 PM

Also Anita is a RB plain as day…how often has he played there for us?
