New Defender Coming In – Double Deal Tomorrow?

3:09 pm, Saturday, August 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 85 Comments

A bit late on this one but news earlier today that Palermo left-back Achraf Lazaar is flying into Newcastle today for his medical and will attend the game against Brighton at St. James’ Park today.

News just coming in that Newcastle have agreed a fee with Ipswich Town for their Irish striker Daryl Murphy so things are really starting to move on Tyneside.

We could get two signings announced tomorrow – at least.

@Spoof – I thought the same, I just wondered how else Derby County could afforda 14m signing – I didn’t think they had much if any money to spend. Hughes is their prize possession.

  • 2 toontaff2 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:14 PM

Tonight. there should be some real noise – 5.30pm kick offs mean plenty of time to get the stella in – let’s start fast and keep the crowd onside!
Our first true test, harder without Gayle, but we still should be good enough to beat them at home.
I hope we give Hoots a great welcome and then beat his team!

  • 3 expatmag // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:15 PM

Love it……Bournemouth 1 up at Palace…..would love to see that get Pardew sacked

  • 4 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:17 PM

Yes! Palace have a penalty saved (Cabaye took it). Now he’s doing badly at a London club everyone will say Pardew is awful.

  • 5 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:17 PM

To be fair Kodja is going to cost 15 million for Derby! Hes not worth that pretty sure Rafa will have looked at a lot of those strikers you mentioned and to be honest none of them are head and shoulders above Murphy who will be a lot cheaper which can mean we can spend money on another player instead!!

I wanted us to sign Assombolonga but Forest apparently want close to 20 million and is quite injury prone Murphy has also scored more goals in the last few seasons

I wish we could still sign the best of the best but we have to be realistic !

  • 6 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:18 PM

Why wish a player who hasn’t even signed for us yet an injury….when we need an experienced champ striker over a poor unproven foreign striker….heres a thought….give him a chance mate.

  • 7 Belfast // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:20 PM

We don’t want him sacked yet, but once he buys the sulky one they can fire him.

  • 8 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:20 PM

Was expecting better than that though. Rodriguez/Haller would have been good coups.

  • 9 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:21 PM

No guarantee Haller would do well in the championship none at all !!

  • 10 Jail for Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:21 PM

That’s like wanting him to get a lethal injection instead of the rack. I want him there long enough for the Palace fans to set up a site up!

  • 11 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:22 PM

Was it callum patterson we were linked with earlier this week….if so he’s scored again today already….not bad for a rightback

  • 12 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:22 PM

@Kets – Just because you wanted a shinier fire engine on Christmas morning doesn’t mean you should just smash the one you got!

  • 13 Harley // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:23 PM

Can’t believe people are actually engaging in conversation with Kets.

  • 14 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:23 PM

I wonder what the blog would have been like the last time we went down with the signings we made and players we sold ?

We sold a lot higher quality of player in Owen, Duff , Viduka , Martins , Emre etc than we have got rid of this season and also only bought a few players like Simpson, Guthrie , Best and Lovenkrands and the business we have done this season is a much higher quality player than they were as well!

  • 15 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:23 PM

Think this could prove to be a snip.

Haidara said to be taking it very slowly on his comeback having been rushed back into action numerous times. Probably won’t be considered until October at the earliest.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he went elsewhere before the window shuts.

  • 16 JP...from The Rock // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:24 PM

Underwhelmed with Murphy signing to say the least. We needed a younger, fast strong striker. I would have thought Haller ticked all the right boxes but maybe he didn’t want to cone here. Anyway we’re stuck with Murphy now. Anyone know if he’s slow or likes to get stuck in and holds up play well?

Lazaar will be a hit here, chuffed that we got this guy in! Can’t wait to see him play in or black and white. Will be a nuisence to our opposition with his tenacity.

  • 17 toontaff2 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:24 PM

    Murphy’s Law Harley!

  • 18 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:25 PM

Them 2 you mention….one unlikely to drop and a lot of money only recently back from a long injury the other totally unproven and costly….may as well start with rivvy….at least murphy is proven at this level

  • 19 firebug666 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:26 PM

Regardless of his age, if Daryl Murphy gets the service he will get goals. He’s done ok in this league and may well be the difference between winning and losing a match.

Every player we bring in deserves to be given a chance, once the team gels we should be ok.

Having said that… Today could go either way, and early goal for us could settle us down, but it will be a long game and they are a very good team.

  • 20 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:27 PM

Mike Dean is the most loathsome ref of all time. Another match that he’s trying to make all about him, giving Palace a ridiculous penalty. Utter pillock.

Luckily Cabaye messed it up again 🙂

Could be the end of Pardew at Palace by the time we kick-off.

    What a lovely thought.

  • 21 firebug666 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:29 PM

If the scores in the prem say the same, palace will be rock bottom of the league.

  • 22 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:29 PM

On the previous page i put video link up of murphy if u want a look….. more mobile then i thought he was and scores all types of goals worth a look tbh.

  • 23 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:29 PM

LCBP, I’m not talking about the best of the best, I’m talking about decentish championship strikers. Murphy has had one decent season in his entire career which is pretty astonishing. He couldn’t even score in Scotland for the best team.
Honestly cannot think of a less inspiring signing than him. I’m waiting for some muppet to write “if he’s good enough for Rafa, he’s good enough for me”.

  • 24 expatmag // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:29 PM

There isnt a lot out there and as purely a back up who would be sold next season if we go up, he is possibly the best available in that price range.

  • 25 toon kk // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:31 PM

Huddersfield 1 up and playing well apparently.

  • 26 Munster Mag // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:32 PM

Good moves by rafa. Lazaar looks good on the denis. wise footage and we need speed and an attacking outlet. Murphy makes sense as i said a few weeks ago. Belfast i think saivet was an ok player to be honest. And i rarely get player judgements wrong! Jeez i was s!ated for rubbishing santon, mbiwa and the awful french winger from !ast year but i think i was right. If we can get atsu’s pace in we could be building a serious team at this level.

  • 27 toontaff2 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:32 PM

If he’s good enough for Rafa, he’s good enough for me.

  • 28 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:34 PM

Firebug “if he gets the service he will score goals”. in that case the Irish team must be crap as he’s had over 20 games for them and never scored a goal!

  • 29 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:34 PM

It is a surprise signing murphy….but we can only give him a chance….i think its been either to much money or lack of proven quality which has us possibly signing murphy…..lets see what happens.

  • 30 firebug666 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:34 PM

If he’s good enough for Rafa, he’s good enough for me.

Now where the hell is that Miss Piggy?

  • 31 Munster Mag // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:34 PM

Not surprised re huddersfield. They should be top 6 all season

  • 32 firebug666 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:36 PM

He scores at this level marra, can run, dribble, has a great shot from distance, and can head the ball, OK all at this level, but that is where we are.

  • 33 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:36 PM

Agree we probably should look for better but what if they dont want to come ? No point paying 15 million for the likes of Wells who hasn’t played in the premiership and may not cut it Murphy will score goals for us and provide back up and could be sold on next season and we wont lose much money

Who knows who Rafa has in mind we could still be looking at also signing another striker we just dont know!

  • 34 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:37 PM

That Glenn Murray will be a threat tonight. He’s another player that we should’ve gone for. Like him a lot.

  • 35 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:37 PM

Munster wasn’t it you banging the Duffy drum? Lol
tbf to Murphy he doesn’t look that slow on the YouTube link and it’s not just his goals that will help us out its the rest of his game especially if we get enough pace around him
I’ll certainly give him a chance

  • 36 Rotonda heights // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:41 PM

exactly. i remember early kk days when he bought in the likes of alex mathie ” to do a job”. mathie was never going to be long term and at 33, nor is murphy, but hey ” horses for courses” and worry about upgrades when job done.

will feel so vindicated if pardew gets the chop and then maybe even his keenest devotees (they know who they are) will give it up. Nice if ap’s parting move is signing sissoko for crazy money.

  • 37 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:42 PM

Mates Vydra has confirmed he’s leaving Watford, now he would have been a very good signing, was absolute class in the championship. Bet he’s going for less than we pay for Murrphy and he’s only 24.
Does anyone think that Murphy was seriously the best player we could get? Really? Maybe he’s the only one willing to come for £15k a week.
I’m sure Fans of Armstrong will be happy that he’s being pushed out the door for this no mark

  • 38 Jib // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:45 PM

I clearly remember Antoine Sibierski being mocked when he signed for us – ended up a fans favourite – similarly with Peter Lovenkrands – shite in the PL and Bundesliga great in SPL and Championship – did a job for us.
    Horses for courses chaps.
    Horses for courss

  • 39 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:47 PM

I think murphy has been signed for this promotion push….we will have to get better players again then both murphy and vydra….and murphy fits the bill more then vydra’s style….just from the look of it.

  • 40 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:48 PM

Atsu really isn’t very fast. A scampering type that can sometimes get half a yard due to his acceleration, but doesn’t run away from people, particularly when you look at footage of him in top leagues. Another I’m not very keen on. Thought he was 19/20, but he’s the same age as Sammy Ameobi and has made about as much impact.

Lazaar and Yedlin are both quicker.

If we’re not gonna splash on a ST and Lazaar looks like very shrew business, then I’d hope we can pay for a Knockaert/Brady and Atsu is just coming in as a squad player. Doesn’t seem like it from the sounds we’re hearing currently though.

  • 41 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:51 PM

Springy, we won’t get promoted if we’re relying on players like Murphy. If we’re just looking short term then we may as well have loaned a decent player from a premier league club

  • 42 welshgeordie9 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:54 PM

Would rather have Daryl Murphy in than bast dost or any other player we have been linked with, why you might ask, well it’s quite simple really, championship experience, who’s been there and done it and still doing it now.

    Simple really.

  • 43 firebug666 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:56 PM

Come on now, we are not going to be relying on Murphy are we, we have Gayle and Mitrovic, Murphy will be cover for injuries and suspensions, or may come on for the last 15 minutes to rest tired players etc. I actually makes sense to get a striker like him as cover.

If we loaned a player he would be expected by his parent club to be played not used as cover.

  • 44 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:57 PM

No guarantee a loanee would score coming down to this division….murphy has been decent at this level…..u maybe right tho… we’ll just have to see how it pans out

  • 45 welshgeordie9 // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:57 PM

Just hoping Mitrovic gets his scoring boots on.

That’s one hell of a strike force.

  • 46 catchy in norway // Aug 27, 2016 at 3:58 PM

The team is taking shape, and once the season gets into full swing after about10 games, we will be at the right end of the table.

from what i have read about the players we are signing and have signed, there all fighters who work hard for the team..

on a side note, not a very normal start for p45, normally has a blinder in his first games of the season and thats what keeps him in a job, well its going pear shape in a big way.

    poor him

  • 47 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:00 PM

So lazaar and murphy… possibly atsu… that it for the in coming or are we all expecting someone else?

  • 48 JDdubai // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:00 PM

Fine with Murphy. Whoever we got in would be backup to Mitro and Gayle. Murphy ‘s job is to cover Mitro when he is suspended and get us promoted.

Also if this works out then we can get a better quality striker next summer than Haller most likely so it all makes sense….as long as we get promoted.

  • 49 bettyswallocks // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:00 PM

Great to get Murphy in. A good experienced striker at this level. Very assured and composed in front of goal and not just a bit static target man. He can beat players and can shoot with power and accuracy with both feet. Well done Rafa.

  • 50 toon kk // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:01 PM

Murphy will mainly be used as a sub or cover for potential injuries. It is a case of he’ll be fairly useful for our promotion push. But tbh we need younger quality, I just can’t see us going up this season.

  • 51 bettyswallocks // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:02 PM

Bit Was meant to be big.

  • 52 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:03 PM

Murphy is a 1 in 4 man at this level, let’s get that straight. Not proven like McCormack. A journeyman. Had one anomaly of a season 2 years ago, last season he was a shadow of the previous Ipswich fans seem to say, but they don’t want him to leave.

So far this season he has 0 in 4.

Who knows, maybe coming to NUFC will give him one last lease of life, he seems keen if he’s put in a transfer request as reported. St James can elevate these types as we’ve seen with Sibierski/Lovenkrands/Harewood/Best.

Say he comes in and gets 3 or 4 in 12 starts, is that enough?

  • 53 Rafa Revolution // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:03 PM

  • 56 toon kk // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:05 PM

Gayle is a great strike force, the rest have a lot to prove, far from outstanding tbh.

  • 57 Munster Mag // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:06 PM

Manx, I never banged a Duffy drum? He’s a competitive player though, give him that much. I think Murphy will do fine especially if Rafa releases the wingers to do their thing, assuming we get a fast left winger.

  • 58 welshgeordie9 // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:06 PM

    Rafa Revolution

Is that because he’d scored 3 the other night.

  • 59 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:06 PM

Looks like Vydra is going to Derby as well, so that Kodjia, Vydra & Martin. That’s some quality.

  • 60 catchy in norway // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:07 PM

but one thing i will say in his defense, I enjoyed moe of his football than i did the whole of P45s time at the club.
But he had to go, he had lost everyone around xmas time, and we held on to him way to long

    G’day folks.

I was just having a nosey at the Palace forum, Percy’s honeymoon has passed and the better half is filing for divorce.

I thought this comment nailed it:

“To be fair Pardew isn’t endearing himself to anyone though is he.

Things like that stupid dance during the cup final and getting rid of players like Jedi don’t don’t do the goodwill he has any favours.

Pardew has wanted to put his mark on the team, he has and therefore he should take the flak.

So far his best run came with someone else’s team. Right now he isn’t showing any signs of turning it around.”

  • 64 Rotonda heights // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:09 PM

  • 67 colwell // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:11 PM

Nothing wrong with signing Murphy, proven at this level good movement ,strong and good in the air,

When we need a goal at the end of a game having Mitro and Murphy up top and crosses left right and centre together they give us a huge threat. Mitro and Gayle starters Murphy as super sub.

  • 68 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:12 PM

Murphy isn’t even the best striker at Ipswich, let alone a “proven quality striker at this level”. It’s funny how far some people’s expectations have fallen so that they can support every single Rafa decision.

  • 69 Rafa Revolution // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:13 PM

  • 75 AncientC // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:20 PM

I am not sure about anybody else, but if we were offered a straight swap between Gayle for Benteke, I would rather keep Gayle.

Benteke was a crazy waste of money in my opinion, but then again, he did keep Villa in the league, so I can see the thinking behind that one.

  • 76 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:24 PM

  • 79 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:27 PM

Happens everywhere he goes, Ancient @ 63

Another dynamic is the players get wind of the supporters dislike for him, lose respect and don’t want to perform for him. Imagine many players everywhere he has been grew to dislike him, probably oblivious to it is ‘Pards’. That’s his main weakness, completely incapable of self-criticism, personal reflection and therefore improvement.

After going down early today, he immediately lost faith in his tactics and moved Wickham onto the wing, we’ve seen that before. Out and out STs on the wing, I’m sure it’ll work one day!

Took The King another 40mins of the match to correct it and sub on an actual winger in Zaha, for him.

  • 80 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:31 PM

First time I’ve predicted a RAfa line-up correctly this season, I think!

Howay, still plenty of match winners in that team. Diame, Perez, Ritchie most likely. Hyaden and the CBs a big threat from set-pieces.

Hail – If Pardew had any foresight, he should have threatened to walk if Bolasie was sold, but according to what I am reading, Pardew may be the reason why Bolasie and now Zaha want out.

We could end up playing against a Pardew side this season if he does get the chop, as I cannot imagine he will be managing at Premier league level again – that’s if he does go.

TOTALLY unimpressed with the Murphy signing.
Seems like we’re just bringing bodies in now, whether they’re good or not, just to make sure we have enough players for a long campaign.
What happens if we go up? How are we going to get rid of the likes of Murphy, Hanley, Clark etc. who aren’t going to be good enough for the Premier?
