Sels, Dummett, Gouffran Start – Yedlin On Bench

nufc-emblembrighton fc

Rafa Benitez has just named his team for the tough game against Brighton this afternoon and Matz Sels is back in goal and Yoan Gouffran gets yet another start.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Sels, Anita, Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummett; Shelvey, Hayden; Ritchie, Gouffran, Diame; Perez
Subs: Darlow, Yedlin, Gamez, Clark, Hanley, Colback, Armstrong

That’s the team we expected, but we had Karl Darlow in goal but Matz Sels keeps his place from last Saturday.

Shelvey and Hayden are the two holding midfielders with Anita and Dummett the full-backs and Perez is the lone man up front.

Mohamed Diame is in the number 10 position, so there could be a goal threat from the Senegal International today – here’s hoping.

This is what Rafa said about this game after the win on Tuesday day night when we picked up three injuries against Cheltenham in the EFL Cup:

“To play a cup game and to lose three players is something that you’re not expecting, and when you want to go through in the cups, you don’t want to lose players every time,”

“But we have to manage. I’m worried because we are losing players, but we have to do what we have to do with the squad that we have at the moment.”

“We have to manage the situation without them. Without Mitrovic we were doing well, and now we have to manage also without Gayle.”

“We have to be sure that we have enough players to score goals and play a good game. It will be difficult, because Brighton are a good side, but still, we have confidence.”

Two in five fans think we can win this game.

Charlie Austin looks shite in a passing team Sunderland look solid at the back

  • 2 JamesToon // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:33 PM

Bench just shows how much we need attackers

  • 3 Shearer.Milburn // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:34 PM

Perez 1st goal at 6/1… Fingers crossed

  • 4 colwell // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:34 PM

FFS that has to be our most defensive bench ever. Better hope we don’t need to bring someone on to change the game need for attacking players very clear,

Darlow, Yedlin, Gamez, Clark, Hanley, Colback, Armstrong

  • 5 Belfast // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:37 PM

Fingers crossed for no injuries lol

  • 6 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:38 PM

    As expected.

Still plenty of matchwinners out there. Perez, Ritchie and Diame most likely, with Hayden and the CBs from set-pieces. Maybe Gouffran will pop up with one!

Glad to see Yedlin immediately in the fold. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him deployed as a winger at some point.

Prediction, revised down from a 3-0 to a 2-0 victory! Ritchie and Diame.

  • 7 geordie157 // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:38 PM

Was hoping Darlow would get the nod today.

Do we really not rate any youngsters enough to put them on the bench, Gilliead for example? Or even put Riviere on the bench

  • 8 toon kk // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:38 PM

Sels in goal, oh no. Not sure where our goals are going to come from either. Tough game.

  • 9 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:39 PM

Looking at our bench is exactly why we need to be buying more attacking players !!

  • 10 AncientC // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:40 PM

Sidwell playing for Brighton, he will need some attention.

  • 11 AncientC // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:41 PM

Stockdale, Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Bong; Knockaert, Kayal, Sidwell, Skalak; Baldock, Murray.

subs: Maenpaa (GK), Hunt, Stephens, Norwood, Murphy, LuaLua, Hemed.

  • 12 Ron Knee // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:41 PM

Could be 3 points for SAFC.

  • 14 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:42 PM

Duffy starting for Brighton, hopefully his rich vein of form doesn’t end today.

  • 15 Ron Knee // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:43 PM

    Or maybe not.

  • 16 Belfast // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:43 PM

Shane Duffy’s debut ? That’s where the goals are coming from.

  • 17 Belfast // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:45 PM

Norwich, Villa and Wednesday all losing. This could be a very good win for us.

  • 18 JP...from The Rock // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:45 PM

Colwell- spot on was thinking the same. We definately have to find the balance of the squad like Rafa says and with that he’s referring to attacking players. We certainly need some! Hope Armstrong plays before he goes off on loan. Seen some goals scored from Murphy, looks note mobile than Mitrovic and has a pretty good shot on him too. Looks promising.

We’re crying out for more attacking midfield players though. Very glad to hear Rada say that we need players that can get past their man so keen to see what players we’re after these last days in the window.

the bench shows how much we need more attackers

  • 25 Rotonda heights // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:55 PM

cheltenham took out 3 of our attackers and nearly perez too, but we have gayle, mitro and now murphy to come back. Not a lot more rafa can do.

  • 26 mattyNUFC // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:57 PM

Fulham and Reading but break deadlocks in stoppage time

If ever before, this is the match Rafa needs to show he’s worth what he’s getting paid. Vs top team in the division, our two main strikers down and in jeopardy of being case adrift 5 weeks into the season

not that it would be doom and gloom if we lost, but if he’s a top top manager, he can pull one out

  • 27 CSC92 // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:58 PM

We haven’t got enough defenders on the bench

  • 28 mattyNUFC // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:58 PM

deep down, i feel like we’ll lose this game against a much better organized Brighton, but, again, if Rafa is as good as we hope he is, he can pull one out….

  • 29 CSC92 // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:59 PM

@mattyNUFC the manager doesn’t score the goals, it’s the shite on the pitch that will let us down if anything

  • 30 AncientC // Aug 27, 2016 at 4:59 PM

I don’t think Parish is the type to mess around. If Gary Monk becomes available, I think he could be an inspired choice for Palace.

Leeds really is a poor choice for any manager to take on.

  • 31 mattyNUFC // Aug 27, 2016 at 5:00 PM

i should remove “organized” from my last post and just keep “better”. Brighton are nothing to gawk at (save for Duffy)

  • 32 mattyNUFC // Aug 27, 2016 at 5:01 PM

    CSC

sure, but Rafa isn’t the 6th best paid manager in the world because we don’t expect him to pull these things off….

  • 33 Jib // Aug 27, 2016 at 5:01 PM

Interesting that the two teams who have beaten us are the early leaders. They were alarming and disappointing results because they finished 19th and 20th last season, but perhaps they are actually just decent teams this season.

  • 40 MAUTITOON // Aug 27, 2016 at 5:08 PM

  • 55 geordiesteve520 // Aug 27, 2016 at 5:23 PM

Just coming home from Forest – Leeds, decent game watched Olivwr Burke carefully and he’s got potential, Charlie Taylor looked good going forward but caught defensively. He scored after doing very little for 90 minutes. For me the best player on the pitch was Kyle Bartley at DC for Leeds he was big, strong and really good on the ball.

Ok, perez score a few goals, but he is more of a fox in the box type of player. he is hopeless by himself.

i would get Arma on for the 2nd half, the ball might stick a bit better.

all in all though its been a good half.

  • 142 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 6:23 PM

I really don’t understand the fans that are in the stadium.

50,000? Me and my son make more noise when we are playing and running.

Unbelievable that this is how SJP sounds like on a day like this, when the team is up by a goal.

Hope they won’t spill any cognac on their fancy tuxedos.

Agree. Fabled NUFC crowd not on form today. A rousing “Referee’s a banker!” would’ve sent a clearer message.

  • 147 JamesToon // Aug 27, 2016 at 6:25 PM

Great first half, Gouffran looks a different player under Rafa…was expecting him just to pass it sideways, but he unleashed an absolute thunderc***

Need to kill the game off, could and should have been 3/4 nil up

  • 148 JamesToon // Aug 27, 2016 at 6:26 PM

Pretty obvious the boos were for the ref…Brighton players going down like fan*ies

  • 149 Oleg G // Aug 27, 2016 at 6:26 PM

In the first 30 mins I’ve enjoyed our ball control and passing. Was a very cool way of passing the ball around the pitch, specially in midfield and upfront.

The last 18 mins were in Brighton’s feet, too many fouls but the ref is shocking.

  • 150 lukes26 // Aug 27, 2016 at 6:27 PM

Thanks for that. Where’s the ref from, Sussex? Or is he just showing us what a clever boy he is.

Ne’re mind, win or lose, he’s sure to be welcome on the bus back to Brighton where he can play with his whistle all night long.

    Ooh, naughty me

We have signed so many players, most I am reasonably happy with – but I genuinely hoped we would of managed to get one special player just to be able to unlock stubborn defences. …Yes I know we are in the championship

Lost the stream I was watching!

Sels with a massive paw there, almost superhuman 😆

By far his best performance from us. Maybe it was a case of settling in.

  • 281 davis_toons // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:23 PM

    And very strong hands

  • 282 JP...from The Rock // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:23 PM

Yedlin’s yet to touch the ball lol

  • 283 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:23 PM

Like Neo stopping the bullets in The Matrix

  • 284 JP...from The Rock // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:24 PM

Tbf Perez hasn’t stop chasing the back four. Hasn’t stopped running. Needs to work on his first touch though.

  • 285 Rafa Revolution // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:25 PM

    Fantastic win tonight

  • 286 davis_toons // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:25 PM

“case of settling in” was also a case for the new boy…so therefore no…Armstrong today guys.

  • 287 toon kk // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:27 PM

Brilliant win, great to see us playing like a team.

  • 288 Oleg G // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:27 PM

Hope people are even more confident now in the team.

    Great victory.

  • 289 davis_toons // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:27 PM

Surely Rafa wants to quickly gets us out of this League and built on for more excitement.

Give him a 10 years contract.

  • 290 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:29 PM

    Good win.

Got the score right, but not the scorers.

A lot of positives in that match, just didn’t like the way we ground the match to a halt last 15.

Back in the chasing pack in 4th.

MOTM I’d have to give it to Sels or Lascelles. All-round decent performances, Perez yet to find his niche, will he ever?

  • 291 JP...from The Rock // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:29 PM

Good performance, great result. Love seeeing the huge black and white flags flying around St James’ and we’re up to 4th!! Happy days! 🙂

  • 292 GeordieTwo // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:30 PM

Given we had Gayle and Mitro out this is a terrific result. Well done Rafa.

  • 293 Ron Knee // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:31 PM

    A clean sheet too, G2!

  • 294 NUFCPaul // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:31 PM

We’re definitely going down. Rafa hasn’t got a clue what’s he’s doing. Oh wait, that was two weeks ago. We’re going up and Rafa is a genius. There, fixed.

  • 295 GeordieTwo // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:32 PM

Ha ha Paul @294. Yes some on here definitely deserve that. Take that you crusty curmudgeons! Harrumph!

  • 296 davis_toons // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:33 PM

I will give it to Sels to reassure his confidence in his new club new country.

We wouldn’t want a shaky keeper.

  • 297 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:33 PM

Good, controlled performance. I’d like to see us go for the jugular when we are 2-0 up and they are down to 10. I do get the impression that Rafa would be happy with 1-0 every week. No problem with that really

  • 298 GeordieTwo // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:33 PM

And Sels is no longer the worst keeper in the Championship Ron mate. Amazing what a few wins can do lol.

  • 299 Rotonda heights // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:34 PM

    hail

colback did his best to make sure it was squeaky bum time !! so glad rafa can see his limitations and not make him an automatic starter any more.

great win, great momentum and on another day gouffran would have had a spectacular hat trick.

  • 300 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:35 PM

i’ll repeat this as i find it interesting to find out

    manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 6:39 PM

good by sels again has he totally improved in 1 week or have people been way over the top with their criticism?

  • 301 GeordieTwo // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:35 PM

A couple of weeks ago I was fighting for my life on here trying to defend the club against the doomsayers. This feels very good indeed….

  • 302 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:36 PM

I really really like Hayden, Anita and Ritchie on that right side. So much quality passing and movement. Breath of fresh air.

  • 303 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:36 PM

Alright performance. But why can’t we dominate even with 11 men against their 10..

  • 304 GeordieTwo // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:36 PM

Yes people have been way over the top manx mate. As usual. A couple of losses and the sky is falling for some.

  • 305 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:42 PM

    Manxpie

Criticism is justified until proven otherwise. Today he proved otherwise. Wasn’t the jittery, hesitant bloke from a week ago. Looked a lot more commanding and assured. Simply down to finally starting to feel comfortable I think.

Maybe Krul leaving the building has had some psychological affect. Former no1 no longer around, now Sels feels king of the goalkeeping hill at the training ground perhaps which translates to a calmer performance.

  • 306 davis_toons // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:42 PM

You don’t kill a good team off by bring in attacker when you know your attackers aren’t that good.

Especially when your “new” team is tiring out in the last few minutes of the game.

  • 307 davis_toons // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:46 PM

If 11 men against their 11…there will be more than striking the woodwork .. Brighton are not walkover.

  • 308 davis_toons // Aug 27, 2016 at 7:48 PM

They got the majority of the possession after the 1st goal and then they were down by a man..
