Sels, Dummett, Gouffran Start – Yedlin On Bench

nufc-emblembrighton fc

Rafa Benitez has just named his team for the tough game against Brighton this afternoon and Matz Sels is back in goal and Yoan Gouffran gets yet another start.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Sels, Anita, Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummett; Shelvey, Hayden; Ritchie, Gouffran, Diame; Perez
Subs: Darlow, Yedlin, Gamez, Clark, Hanley, Colback, Armstrong

That’s the team we expected, but we had Karl Darlow in goal but Matz Sels keeps his place from last Saturday.

Shelvey and Hayden are the two holding midfielders with Anita and Dummett the full-backs and Perez is the lone man up front.

Mohamed Diame is in the number 10 position, so there could be a goal threat from the Senegal International today – here’s hoping.

This is what Rafa said about this game after the win on Tuesday day night when we picked up three injuries against Cheltenham in the EFL Cup:

“To play a cup game and to lose three players is something that you’re not expecting, and when you want to go through in the cups, you don’t want to lose players every time,”

“But we have to manage. I’m worried because we are losing players, but we have to do what we have to do with the squad that we have at the moment.”

“We have to manage the situation without them. Without Mitrovic we were doing well, and now we have to manage also without Gayle.”

“We have to be sure that we have enough players to score goals and play a good game. It will be difficult, because Brighton are a good side, but still, we have confidence.”

Two in five fans think we can win this game.

FFS that has to be our most defensive bench ever. Better hope we don’t need to bring someone on to change the game need for attacking players very clear,

Darlow, Yedlin, Gamez, Clark, Hanley, Colback, Armstrong

    As expected.

Still plenty of matchwinners out there. Perez, Ritchie and Diame most likely, with Hayden and the CBs from set-pieces. Maybe Gouffran will pop up with one!

Glad to see Yedlin immediately in the fold. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him deployed as a winger at some point.

Prediction, revised down from a 3-0 to a 2-0 victory! Ritchie and Diame.

Was hoping Darlow would get the nod today.

Do we really not rate any youngsters enough to put them on the bench, Gilliead for example? Or even put Riviere on the bench

Sels in goal, oh no. Not sure where our goals are going to come from either. Tough game.

Colwell- spot on was thinking the same. We definately have to find the balance of the squad like Rafa says and with that he’s referring to attacking players. We certainly need some! Hope Armstrong plays before he goes off on loan. Seen some goals scored from Murphy, looks note mobile than Mitrovic and has a pretty good shot on him too. Looks promising.

We’re crying out for more attacking midfield players though. Very glad to hear Rada say that we need players that can get past their man so keen to see what players we’re after these last days in the window.

cheltenham took out 3 of our attackers and nearly perez too, but we have gayle, mitro and now murphy to come back. Not a lot more rafa can do.

Fulham and Reading but break deadlocks in stoppage time

If ever before, this is the match Rafa needs to show he’s worth what he’s getting paid. Vs top team in the division, our two main strikers down and in jeopardy of being case adrift 5 weeks into the season

not that it would be doom and gloom if we lost, but if he’s a top top manager, he can pull one out

I don’t think Parish is the type to mess around. If Gary Monk becomes available, I think he could be an inspired choice for Palace.

Leeds really is a poor choice for any manager to take on.

Interesting that the two teams who have beaten us are the early leaders. They were alarming and disappointing results because they finished 19th and 20th last season, but perhaps they are actually just decent teams this season.
