Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player In 2-0 Win Over Brighton?

7:56 pm, Saturday, August 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 27 Comments

Jamaal Lascelles scored after 15 minutes and Jonjo Shelvey hit a great goal direct from a free kick after 63 minutes to give Newcastle a well deserved 2-0 win this afternoon against Brighton & Hove Albion and we move up to 4th place in the Championship.

Brighton’s Sam Baldock was sent off after 55 minutes for picking up a second yellow card and there were good performances all around the pitch today with Gouffran hitting the post after 24 minutes and looking very good in that first half.

Shelvey full of running, great goal – and managed to stay on the pitch with a card happy ref.

hayden n diame looked really good too
perez ran the line all game in an impossible position so deserves huge credit too
his touches weren’t great but more often than not he had at least 2 6ft+ around him so was brilliant for the team

Aye that ref was dodgy like worrying the lack of quality in referees FA need to look into funding it better

This Ipswich Murphy bloke then what’s he about?

  • 5 Slank // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:03 PM

Can’t really single out any player who was head and shoulders above the rest of his team mates.

It was a very efficient team performance.

It’s the first time I have seen some of the new boys over ninety minutes. Diame and Hayden were impressive. I thought Shelvey looked much better than last season. The much maligned Gouffran was very effective. Praise should go to Perez for never giving up playing in a position that he really isn’t suited to.

It will be interesting to see how the new recruits fit into the squad.

I voted Sels, but it makes a world of difference having a RB that knows how to defend – tackling, positioning, blocking, stays on his feet, nippy enough to handle most in this division down the line. Think Anita has finally found his primary position.

What a fantastic result, well done to all the players, i voted for Diame for my man of the match, what a beast when he goes on one of his runs, he’s already replaced Sissoko in my eyes, well done lads.

  • 8 Belfast // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:05 PM

He’s probably the best one in the division from what I’ve seen the last few years Wwsbrd lol

  • 9 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:05 PM

belfast it is ridiculous we might get a crowd ban next for such jeers and booing at the ref
it seems they must make quite alot of money from yellows
even when i played local footy i got a bill of £8 barstewards

  • 10 welshgeordie9 // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:06 PM

We’ve just beaten one of the favourites without Mitrovic, Gayle and Aarons, they best chance was when they hit the bar, before the match i went for a draw, wow players proved me wrong.

Well this is a turn up, and to think I was worried…Meh!

The team performance to was great, with some outstanding performances from various players, Gouffran gets my vote, never stopped running, defended well, ran up and down that left wing challenging for every ball, and if he had a bit more luck could have had a couple of goals.

Cracking performance, great win that was well deserved.

yeah diame has strength touch and skill by the looks of it plus is brave in a challenge sisko has 1 of them attributes!

  • 14 Belfast // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:11 PM

Don’t like this new automatic yellow card for dissent rule at all like. Basically don’t complain or question any decisions. Seen a load of players booked for nowt the last couple of weeks.

  • 15 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:12 PM

A lot of discontent with Brady from Norwich fans. Apparently looks disinterested.

Get Lazaar and Murphy sealed for a combined £6-7m.

    Sell Sissoko for £25-30m

Place a £10m bid for Brady, see what happens.

I wonder what Rafa made of Knockaert tonight?

  • 16 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:12 PM

    Belfast
Is that the ref or Murphy?

  • 17 Veltman // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:15 PM

lordy – hiding behind the rock?
Not at all.Just waiting for this kind of moments to be proved wrong and get more optimistic.
Still early days though isn’t it?
Our displays have been poor up until the cup game. Can we say everything is completely turned around?

  • 18 goommy // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:15 PM

A bit luck but well done. Still have to improve for most players. HWTL!!

If Goufrons effort had gone in he would have been my MOM, could have had a hat trick.

But Shelvey for me was the main man in our side and that goal may well be goal of the season.

Best hair style in our side goes to Yedlin.

  • 20 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:18 PM

Speaking of hair styles did Lascelles lose a bet?

  • 21 funlovingexpress // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:20 PM

It was Perez for me. He ran the line brilliantly trying to get the ball moved in behind them.

I heard some fans complaining about him. Some really have no idea about off the ball movement. Perez’s was exceptional today.

  • 22 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:21 PM

head bandages and girly head tufts seem to be our way forward

  • 23 Legolas // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:21 PM

Hi everyone. What a great win for us today. I thought Gouffran and Lescelles had good games but Shelvey was outstanding today a masterclass in midfield. I think he could be a real player for us this season.

  • 24 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:22 PM

ww nah he was very protective of it in the celebrations he was making sure it was tight after every touch lol

  • 25 Belfast // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:26 PM

    Wwsbrd

The ref Keith Stroud widely recognised as the best ref in the football league lol

  • 26 manxpie // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:29 PM

but he obviously got some stick for it due to the celebration lol
i wonder if anyone is brave enough to chop it off?

  • 27 cornishman // Aug 27, 2016 at 8:39 PM

Chose Lascelles but could have been pretty much anyone. A great performance all round, we,re starting to look like a polished team with plenty of spirit and all pulling in the right direction. Hope we can offload Moussa, don,t want his like around to poison the chalice thanks.
Jonjo,s free kick, if that was Rooney we,ed never hear the end of it. Great stuff lads
