Daryl Murphy Confirmed As Newcastle’s 10th Summer Signing

Newcastle have just announced Daryl Murphy  as Newcastle’s 10th summer signing and it is expected that Palermo left-bank Achraf Lazaar will also be announced as a Newcastle player today.

Daryl Murphy – signing just announced

This is what has been put up on the Newcastle web-site:

Striker Daryl Murphy has become Newcastle United’s latest signing, after arriving from Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee.

The 33-year-old has agreed a two-year contract at St. James’ Park and becomes the tenth new face in the Magpies’ first team squad this summer.

During five seasons at Portman Road, Murphy scored 67 goals in 225 appearances, with 50 of those coming in the last three seasons.

Previously, the front man had also played for Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Waterford United, Harrow Borough and Luton Town.

Murphy is also a 23-cap Republic of Ireland international, and featured for his country at Euro 2016.

This is what Daryl said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to get it over the line and really looking forward to it.”

“When I knew the Club was interested, it was a no-brainer for me so I’m happy it’s all done.”

“I think with the squad of players that the Club have now, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.”

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez added this:

“Daryl has experience and has proven that he can score goals in the Championship.”

“He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend’s game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.”

“Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season.”

This has certainly been one of the busiest transfer windows in Newcastle’s history with 10 players having been brought in and 13 having left the club permanently or on loan.

Sounds good to us.

Comments welcome.

I have great faith in Rafa and have said so on many occasions even when the doubts were screaming from the roof tops after our first two losses…but this here blog is here for us voice our opinions and all I’m saying is not over enamoured by that particular signing.

No doubt Rafa will prove me wrong…I hope he does…but deep down I’m not so sure.

    Still hungover!
Great atmosphere last night favourite chant “Jesus is a Geordie” when he came on – unfortunately he then gave the ball away and looked dodgy!

Your opinion on Murphy isn’t surprising as you haven’t had one positive thing to say since the Rafalution began.

Tbf we are in the championship and he’s a good championship striker, we are a young squad and he’s got years of experience with him

Am not sure why people do see where he fits? It’s exactly what Rafa has been saying he wanted

Good signing, we need depth and yesterday Perez went missing again. Chasing a game him and Mitrovic would be like Carroll and Ameobi.

    Sell Sissoko, Tiote and Riverie

    Bring in Burke and Hughes!

Be a great window with lots of youngsters who can cut it but have potential to do well in prem too.

I remain what I have always been, a realist who realises that things in organisations rarely change overnight.
I don’t swing all over the place. I was not predicting we would win the league in a canter in Martoon’s poll, nor was I having an embarrassing nervous breakdown after two defeats.
We are winning. What more can Rafa do?
If you were a little brighter, you might have noticed that those most keen to pin all the responsibility for the season on him and him alone are those who spent all last season pinning all responsibility on the board and the board alone.
The aim is always to keep Ashley’s feet clean.
Ashley is no longer an issue for me. He’s done the damage I said he would do (while being called a stuck record more than once)
I wish he wasn’t our owner, but it’s not something I want to get over excited about now…the damage was done.
That is in stark contrast to those like bettyswallocks who seem unable to tolerate even the thought of a club without the champion of free enterprise in charge, and for whom the idea of his ever leaving seems offensive and a deal breaker.

“Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season.”

The Rafa mindset is a really big thing for him – he’s said it about so many signings. Considering the motivation levels we’ve seen over the last few years from players, it’s just as well it is as important to him as skills.

Jail, you’re wrong there mate. I’m very happy about a lot of things, I’m happy with a number of the players that have been brought in

Good quality players, you can add Lazaar to that when he signs. One thing I won’t do is be all happy Clappy about us signing the likes of Clark & Murphy, not good enough in my opinion regardless of their role within the squad.

I’ve said loads of times that I’m happy with having Rafa here and there’s no one I would replace him with as manager but I will not applaud his (or the clubs) judgemental errors just because I think he’s a good overall manager

The big question is this. Does Rafa think Mitro is good enough. Think the answer is yes for now. So, Murphy is his reserve/under study perhaps. Thing is you don’t want to pay 15Mill for a back up striker. At least we are not in a position to do that.
Murphy had a 20 goal season 2 years ago. By far and a way his best season.
Have a feeling his success depends on the quality of service he gets.
We should be able to provide that.

here is my merits on what I saw yesterday…
Give my full teams opinion now

    Great Win
    Sh*t ref
Not a Chris Hughton team that I can remember – tried the get in the TOON’s faces kick us instead of playing football.
My MOM was Goufran all over the park today tackled ran shot always available for the pass passed well which freed up space for Shelvey to do his tricks
Not far behind was Shelvey and Diame.
and I thought Perez battled away without much help upfront – did well with the lack of good ball he saw
Anita another good game at full back
Week points none really y – maybe Sells for his command of the six yard box and his punching.

SELS – 6 had his best game for the TOON – still looks a bit shaky in the airing when diving to save needs to punch palm it it out or away from goal a lot stronger.
DUMMETT – 6 had a decent game put in one great sliding
    tackle first half
MBEMBA – 8 Oozed Class had all the time in the world today
LASCALLES – 7 best game this season scored looked like a well worked training pitch goal
ANITA – 7 another excellent game great little tackle when need be
RICHIE 7 Quieter game for the Toon but still played well great delivery for first goal
SHELVEY – 8 Another who had his best game this season great free kick bossed midfield
DIAME – 8 Excellent all-round performance – better than Sissoko and with attitude
HAYDEN – 8 Excellent on the ball today made it look simply got it passed it moved
GOUFRAN – 8.5 Just edged it for me covered every blade of grass – great shot that hit the bar, another volley just over the top, great clearing header from a corner, passed, moved closed the opposition down, got it, passed it – creates space for our other midfielders by his running and positional sense.
PEREZ – 7.5 that is for his effort up-front again chased a losses cause at times and got back and got a couple of tackles in – needs a player to play-off to be most effectual.

SUBS not on long enough really to give a merit
GAMEZ – slotted in well kept ball moving
COLBACK – what can you say…Gallowgate taking bets to see how long it would take before he gave away a free kick – alas 5 minutes – quite a long time for him
YEDLIN – didn’t touch the ball

Wet-weather gear on and away for the papers

Haha if he was the only striker we’d brought in then I’d be fuming but Gayle is our main lad, Mitro, Perez and Murphy

We are likely to play 1 up front mostly so it’s depth imo

Those of you who are not happy about Murphy should know that Ipswich fans are gutted he is leaving them, they all go on about his brilliant work rate and how well he leads the line. Have we anyone else in the squad that can do this. I think he will do a great job for us especially on a cold winter night in say Sheffield. Or even up here.

Haven’t a lot of faith in mitri and Gayle will see more of the ball with this guy leading the line.

This player is Proven why get a young guy in when it’s a gamble especially a player from a broard needs a season to settle in.
Stop knocking this guy he is now one of us as btw as is Dummett who a lot of you are slating. He played well yesterday and under Rafa he will get better and better.

I really dont see how people dont see why we have signed him.

Backup targetman for when Mitro is out for 1 season.

If we assume that we will get promoted then next summer we can get a real top CF who will have more chance scoring goals for us in the PL.

Right now we wont be able to get that level of player due to being in the championship.Would you rather take a gamble on this Haller guy on a 5 year deal and hope he is good enough for the PL? Alos no way he would come to this league to be a backup.

Doing it this way means that we have the reserve target man, not tied down to a long deal and we can recruit a PL striker next summer.

This all assumes that Mitro/Gayle/Perez etc can score the goals to get us there – which i think is a fair assumption.

    Is Murphy fairly quick.
Says on some sites that he has played wing.
Perhaps in his younger days, but to play there at all you would need some pace.
If he has any pace at all it will be an upgrade on Mitro who seems to have none.

Glad to see more experience up top, don’t think he’s a great signing but one who’ll teach the younguns a thing or two. Diame is the player Sissoko wishes he was and Gouffran played great as a second left back, which is where I’m thinking lazar will fit. Personally wouldn’t sell Goufran as he’s always impressed with his work rate wherever he’s played.

I’m happy about this signing as you only have to look at the centre forward position in the club. There is only Mitrovich and Mitrovich. Rafa clearly doesn’t rate Riviere. Armstrong and Perez are not centre forwards.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Murphy as automatic choice on the substitutes bench whenever Mitrovich plays. It’s also good competition for Mitrovich.

We are not going to get a marquee signing for the centre forward position or any other position whilst we remain in the second tier of football.

Having thought about starting a “taxi for Gouffy” fund after the last friendly, I have to give the lad full credit for his efforts and he did really well yesterday and in previous games this season. He certainly helps balance the team with his work rate and was close to a hat trick yesterday – the one that hit the bar was going to be a contender, alongside Jonjo’s free kick. At least Charlie’s assessment is close enough to mine to confirm that was the exact correct dose of stella before the match, to enjoy but still be corpus mentis!
Forgot to mention the ref – he was even worse than the previous numpties and tried to ruin the game! That Baldrick tried to get Perez sent off, when he got booked for tripping Perez, so justice there, when he saw red. Who was the idiot who was rolling around holding his face that got Perez and then Ritchie booked for arguing with the lineo? Maybe Brighton would be called streetwise for fouling repeatedly and rolling around at every challenge from us – the Steve Taylor sniper was on the roof when Baldrick got sent off for fouling Sels!

    Huddersfield are top. Fulham second.

I’m glad to hear that, so why the constant negativity, despite the weeks of talks Rafa went through you’re still trying to suggest he’s an Ashley puppet in one post you made. We’re four points off the top of the division beaten by the two clubs at the top. We’re putting together a Championship squad and next summer when we’re promoted I think there will be four top quality additions which will see us cement a top ten finish and then push on from there.

I would guess that Lazaar and Atsu will be the next and possibly final signings.

I would try and sell Sissoko for the same price as Wijnaldum.

Also, i have just seen a tweet saying that Tiote is going to Galatasary for £1.5million.

If you look at the players on the final year of their contract (Gouffran, Dummett, Tiote and Anita), I think 3 will be here for the promotion push but probably won’t get a new contract. Tiote will be sold, hopefully with Sissoko and Rivieire
