Newcastle In Major Move For Top Target – But It Could Be Difficult

Newcastle are expected to announce the signing of left-back Achraf Lazaar from Palermo today and maybe Ipswich Town striker Daryl Murphy too, if Daryl can complete his medical today.

Both signings have come quickly after Newcastle were linked with the players over the last few days and  Newcastle had gone after a number of different targets.

james mccarthy

James McCarthy – 25 year-old Everton midfielder

Rafa wanted a left-back, winger and striker in and there is news today that Newcastle are in advanced negotiations to sign 24 year-old Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu from Chelsea.

Newcastle are now linked with a move for Everton central midfielder James McCarthy, but it’s hardly surprising that a number of Premier League clubs – Leicester City, Sunderland and Crystal Palace – have already expressed strong interest in the Ireland international.

With being in the second division – even though we have Rafa Benitez as the manager – it’s still difficult for Newcastle to sign high profile players like McCarthy – but it will not stop Lee Charnley from trying to do a deal.

The news in the Mail today is that Newcastle are willing to bid £20M for the 39 times capped Ireland International.

The fact we have won the last four games and seem to be getting better with almost every game could help to persuade the 25 year-old to sign, but it will be tough.

With Premier League clubs after the Glaswegian it will take some courage and belief for him to drop down a division this season and join Newcastle and the Rafa revolution.

James is a top player who is very good technically and it’s little wonder that Rafa is interested in James.

But quite honestly if we can get Achraf Lazaar, Daryl Murphy and Christian Atsu through the door before Wednesday night, we will have done really well in this transfer window in bringing in a massive 12 new players.

Newcastle have the money to buy McCarthy and we would could also offer him good wages but it may be a bridge too far for Rafa to get him in by Wednesday night.

James joined Everton three years ago and has played 116 times with 5 goals and while he was at Wigan for four years from 2009 he played 133 times with 98 goals.

One thing of the many things that have changed at Newcastle since Rafa came in is we are showing a new ambition and certainly the way the lads played for a time yesterday in that first half – Newcastle looked a very good side indeed.

The 2-0 win against Brighton was a great result for us just before the two week International break.

McCarthy would be a great signing but I very much doubt that he would be prepared to drop down to the championship, if he is then great get him signed !

Bit of an anomonous player for £20m. For that price you want someone who dictates the play and the tempo of the game. Every time I’ve seen him he just gets it and passes sideways to a more talented player like Barkley. He’s not worth anywhere near that kind of money, just like he wasn’t worth what Everton paid for him, that’s probably why they are happy to let him leave.

    Munster,
Rafa wants as many defensive players Rafa thinks will get us promoted. If it’s good for Rafa it’s good for me. Rafa, Rafa, Rafa. Boom boom boom.

SUTTY1978 – Bang on with McCarthy mate
MASKED MAN – I think that is a shit deal id take the money and keep it for January or next year back in the Prem – we have enough CM who pass sideways and contribute little as it is, although Shelvey impressed me for the first time yesterday

We’d be better off putting in a big offer for Knockeart

If it is true then i can see why Rafa wants him, Anita, Colback, Hayden and Tiote as our defensive midfielders, but with Anita probably going to play right back and tiote possibly leaving that leaves Colback who’s not everyone’s favourite and Hayden.

but like geordie157 said, use that money for Knockeart, although he didn’t play well yesterday.

As an Irish man, and a life long Newcastle fan, i can tell you now Mc Carthy is not worth anymore than 6 million, a very average player, in fact he is out of the same mould as coalback, in fact a lot of Ireland fans dont even want him in the team, i really hope we dont waste good money on Mc Carthy, he just plays little square passess, to other players, he does not dictate the game in anyway, this is one player we really do not need. HWTL.

magic – you nailed it there very well.
McCarthy is not a top player and is not good technically.Apart from his leg breaking type tackles and high temper,I’m not sure what he brings to the team.We need creative players.
Better retain Tiote or bring Roscisky if he is still without club.

What I’ve seen of him he’s just a “water carrier” and doesn’t seem as if he’ll give us anything different but the way Shelvey and Diame dictated the pace in the middle yesterday then maybe that’s what we need. I think good managers look at teams to play home and away and maybe McCarthy fits the bill when we play away while Shelvey gives us greater options at home? I think we have to be satisfied with all the buys Rafa has made and dare I say that includes Murphy? I know he’s an ex Mackem and at the end of his career but he may just be what we want for a season and who allows Mitro and Gayle to develop. Time will tell but the signs are good.

did Knockeart not play well or was it a case of the much underrated Dummett not allowing him to play well, Dummett stops so many from not playing well yet he is still perceived as being the weak link, mind blowing, it really is !!!!!

So who wins player of the month?

I’d give it to Hayden, for his consistency and drive and also for keeping Colback out of the team!

No way we dont need him. Prefer a midfielder who can run with the ball to relieve pressure. I think anita colback shelvey hayden diame is enough for midfield. Should have kept saivet or just keep tiote. I rather get gareth barry than mccarthy. Or bob bradley the american mid. Think we should just get one right and one left winger and thats it.

I think it was a bit of both, i think there were times dummett wasn’t marking him, great effort from him though, I’ve got to hold my hands up, he did impress me with that tackle on Knockeart which could have landed us in trouble, didn’t realise he’s got a bit of pace, talking about holding my hands up, well done to gourffran in the last couple of games, hope he stays.

Unless we cough up about £15 Million for Knockheart then I doubt we will get him and if this Atsu kid comes from Chelsea then I doubt we will bid for Knockheart.
One player who hasn’t been touted this summer is Jeff Kendrick from Derby, he was Rep of Ireland’s stand out player at the Euro’s. But in Rafa we trust..

Thought Shelvey was a great signing but has failed to live up to expectations..so far…but beginning to find his feet now thank heavens. Was very impressed with Goofy over the last few games, is it because of Rafa or the oppo in this league? Either was he is a player for us now and IMHO it would be a pity to let him go this window. Sels looks like he is gaining in confidence which is another good indicator.
