Newcastle are expected to announce the signing of left-back Achraf Lazaar from Palermo today and maybe Ipswich Town striker Daryl Murphy too, if Daryl can complete his medical today.
Both signings have come quickly after Newcastle were linked with the players over the last few days and Newcastle had gone after a number of different targets.
James McCarthy – 25 year-old Everton midfielder
Rafa wanted a left-back, winger and striker in and there is news today that Newcastle are in advanced negotiations to sign 24 year-old Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu from Chelsea.
Newcastle are now linked with a move for Everton central midfielder James McCarthy, but it’s hardly surprising that a number of Premier League clubs – Leicester City, Sunderland and Crystal Palace – have already expressed strong interest in the Ireland international.
With being in the second division – even though we have Rafa Benitez as the manager – it’s still difficult for Newcastle to sign high profile players like McCarthy – but it will not stop Lee Charnley from trying to do a deal.
The news in the Mail today is that Newcastle are willing to bid £20M for the 39 times capped Ireland International.
The fact we have won the last four games and seem to be getting better with almost every game could help to persuade the 25 year-old to sign, but it will be tough.
With Premier League clubs after the Glaswegian it will take some courage and belief for him to drop down a division this season and join Newcastle and the Rafa revolution.
James is a top player who is very good technically and it’s little wonder that Rafa is interested in James.
But quite honestly if we can get Achraf Lazaar, Daryl Murphy and Christian Atsu through the door before Wednesday night, we will have done really well in this transfer window in bringing in a massive 12 new players.
Newcastle have the money to buy McCarthy and we would could also offer him good wages but it may be a bridge too far for Rafa to get him in by Wednesday night.
James joined Everton three years ago and has played 116 times with 5 goals and while he was at Wigan for four years from 2009 he played 133 times with 98 goals.
One thing of the many things that have changed at Newcastle since Rafa came in is we are showing a new ambition and certainly the way the lads played for a time yesterday in that first half – Newcastle looked a very good side indeed.
The 2-0 win against Brighton was a great result for us just before the two week International break.
