Sky Sports – Newcastle To Sign Christian Atsu

9:16 am, Monday, August 29th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 21 Comments

Sky Sports are now reporting that Chelsea’s Christian Atsu will be joining Newcastle on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

We had an article out yesterday that ESPN and other outlets were reporting the talks were at an advanced stage, with the item being discussed the option to buy the 24-year-old Ghana international outright.

Maybe the fee is what was being discussed?

Christian Atsu – 24 year-old Ghanaian winger

Atsu signed on for Chelsea in a £3.5M deal from Porto in 2013 on a five year deal and we would have thought he would be around that price now, after spending three years on loan at other clubs.

Over the last two years he’s been on loan at Everton (13 appearances – 2 assists) Bournemouth (2 appearances – 1 assist) and Malaga (24 appearances – 4 goals).

In the 2013-2014 season he was on loan at SBV Vitesse in Holland and played 30 games with 5 goals and 6 assists.

Christian usually plays on the right wing, but he can also play on the left hand side and as a withdrawn striker.

He has been at Chelsea since signing 2013, but has never played for the Chelsea first team.

Atsu has represented Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and in two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

He helped his country finish as runners-up in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, when they lost 9-8 on penalties to the Ivory Coast after a 0-0 score after extra time.

Atsu was the Player of the Tournament in that African Cup of Nations 20 months ago.

He has 42 caps for Ghana with 9 goals and he looks a very good player.

Comments welcome.

So who is keen on Atsu and why?
I’ve got to say I have not seen that much of him but that’s because he’s barely kicked a ball for the last three years. He’s definitely got pace but he must be awful in training or something to get so little game time in various loan spells.

with tiote and de jong gone, I’m worried about the experience our central midfield has- this is the area of the pitch matches are won in the championship; I shudder to think we may be relying on colback in this area

NUFC has been like a dying plant for years.
A series of cut-price gardeners have over-watered, over-fed, clipped, pruned, grafted, hacked at the roots, and only made things worse.
Live limbs have been grafted onto gangrenous ones, themselves attached to rotting ones. The stink of decay was everywhere.
Rafa has thrown the whole rotting mess in the bin.
If there’s one thing that should have been learned it is that a football club can’t be run from a central headquarters to a centralised policy like a branch of a retail empire.
Good players were signed with no chance of thriving, promised career-changing moves they were soon resentfully unwilling to earn on the pitch.
Well, we are now looking at a seed, and growing from seed is harder. It won’t be blooming tomorrow. And it won’t bloom at all unless the experienced gardener we now have in charge is allowed to pot it up when he thinks the time has come.
Now, get out and enjoy the Bank Holiday. Autumn will soon be blowing in.

Good signing, but I feel that we need a playmaker and another winger. Keep sissoko and that’s job done. Knockeart and a playmaker needed.

Atsu is a hard working, pacey winger who is good with the ball at his feet and enjoys taking players on. He has consistently played well for Ghana.

He outshone Andre Ayew, Asamoah Gyan & Kwadwo Asamoah at African Cup of Nations. However, the last few seasons he hasn’t been given the opportunity to play consistently. He has huge potential and I hope he has the opportunity to realise it at the toon. Time will tell – exciting signing in my opinion.

Marveaux and abeid should still be at the club. We need them.

Chelsea’s business model is intended to make money on players so I doubt Atsu would be the same price as when they bought him but who knows

News is Rivi is going, Tiotes gone and Sissoko will see bids come in interesting days ahead

Atsu played a full season each for Rio Ave and Porto and Vittesse Arnhem , Everton played him mainly in thir Euro campaign of 2014/15.

Bournemouth just mucked him about and played him twice in cupties so Chelsea cancelled his loan with them last January and he played the scond half of last season for Malaga.

Chelsea are always concerned that their loanees get game time so I suspect that any delay is talks around that subject.

Has he not been given the chance to play or not proven he’s worth playing though?

To this day, I don’t know why we sold Abeid; he always looked promising. same goes for Kemen. Now would be a perfect opportunity for players like that to break into the first team

  • 14 WWSBRD // Aug 29, 2016 at 9:52 AM

    Kemen always looked promising?

  • 15 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 29, 2016 at 9:52 AM

Agree. Big mistake. Abeid is so much better than colback.

  • 16 newcs // Aug 29, 2016 at 9:54 AM

Kemen doesnt get a game at Lyon, why would he get a game for us?

    Apologies blogsters.
    Moment of madness
I fed the many headed troll.
Only a snack, but still worthy of regret.

Ravel Morrison started following NUFC according to Colin haha

  • 19 newcs // Aug 29, 2016 at 9:58 AM

    Abeid we should have kept

  • 20 Jib // Aug 29, 2016 at 10:10 AM

    GK Sels Darlow Elliot Woodman
    RB Sterry Yedlin Gamez
    LB Lazaar Dummett Haidara
    CD Lascelles Mbemba Hanley Clark
    DM Hayden Anita Colback
MF Shelvey Ritchie Diamé Aarons Atsu Gouffran
FWD Perez Gayle Murphy Mitrovic (Armstrong)

    That’s 27 (excluding Armstrong)
2 will have to be shed
A goalie on loan and possibly Aarons loaned when fit.

  • 21 NoahJ // Aug 29, 2016 at 10:22 AM

Of that list, I don’t think Rafa will register Woodman and Sterry. they would still be able to play in cup competitions, which is probably the only time they’d get a game anyway
