Benitez In Surprise Move For Serbian International

12:45 pm, Tuesday, August 30th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 121 Comments

There is a report in GOAL and reactions from Merseyside that Rafa Benitez is interested in bringing Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic to Newcastle on loan and if he can get that done – there will be an option to buy the 22 year-old Serbian winger.

So it’s a bit of a surprise, but Aleksandar Mitrovic’s Serbian International team-mate is apparently reported to be keen to join Rafa Benitez at Newcastle, even though we are in the Championship.

Lazar Markovic – 22 year-old Serbian International winger

Certainly we can rely on Mitro to give Newcastle a glowing reference to his International team-mate.

Markovic joined Liverpool two years ago for £20M from Benfica and last season he was on a season long loan at Fenerbahce in Istanbul, Turkey.

The news of a possible loan move for the 22 year-old winger is coming from only Liverpool sources at the moment.

Newcastle are expected to sign 24 year-old Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu from Chelsea on loan today.

And we are also considering  25 year-old Scouser winger Callum McManaman from West Brom, so don’t seem to need a third winger brought in before tomorrow night.

That’s unless Rafa doesn’t bother with McManaman and goes for the extra class that Markovic would give the team.

Rafa may also be looking to the future for top players to sign now, given that we can hopefully get promoted next May back to the Premier League.

Lazar is a very talented young player and he doesn’t turn 23 until next March, so he could certainly reach his undoubted potential under Rafa’s excellent coaching.

It seems like Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is willing to send the Cacak, Yugoslavia born player out on loan, since he will not be part of the first team squad at the Reds this season.

But Rafa would also insist on an option to buy the player at the end of the season – and maybe Jurgen wouldn’t agree to that?

Lazar started his career at Partizan and was a team-mate of Mitrovic in the 2012-2013 season before he moved to Benfica in 2013.

He joined Partizan and came through their Youth Academy much like Mitro did, and he joined Partizan in 2006 when he was 12 years old and just one year after the Newcastle striker joined .

He has 21 caps for Serbia with 3 goals.

Comments welcome.

Regarding Atsu and his position. He seems very versatile from the stats I can see. When I saw him mostly he played on the right side of midfield. Sor Malaga he started playing on the left side but later moved to the right side of midfield.

If you look through his record he been played all 3 attacking midfield potion about the same amount of time.

Vitesse played him as an AM mostly, at Porto he played on the left side and Malaga and Everton mostly on the right

We sign Atsu and Lazar we are seriously on the up…..

    HUGE sign this…

I still believe Sissulko’s position is untenable due to his obvious desire to leave. However Rafa can be very stubborn as he has proved several times during his career. He will not want to back down too much on the fee, neither will he want to set a precedent for other players wanting to leave and allow players and agents to dictate terms to him.

It will be an interesting conclusion to the saga but I have always expected it to go to the wire with a deal for him to leave being agreed tomorrow.

Happy with transfers so far and great to see lots of the deadwood shipped out as well.

  • 10 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:08 PM

Don’t expect much from him. Not as pacy as some seem to think, has made little impact in his numerous loan spells. Will be good for the Champ I think, but this is about his level.

    The Ghanaian Routledge!

  • 11 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:09 PM

Looks like the brinksmanship with Sissoko is going to the wire. Wonder what happens if we’re left with a sulky Sissoko after deadline day?

  • 12 expatmag // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:14 PM

Play him. He has no other option

  • 13 SPRINGY // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:16 PM

will be interesting to see if sissoko mans up and comes back if he’s not sold, think rafa is playing hard ball to try and get more time to work on him.

  • 14 Our Toon // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:19 PM

Ravel no thanks, the lad has a worse attitude than Ranger. Why does anyone think coming to newcastle will change him all of a sudden? He’s had plenty of chances and messed them all up and very good clubs.

Markovic sounds like BS, I’d be very surprised if he’d drop down to this level.

Wilshire – laughable to say the least, he wants back in the national side and he won’t do that playing in the championship

  • 15 msk21dec // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:21 PM

Few years ago benfica beat juve in semi final of europa lge. 2nd leg finished 0-0 in turin and in that game the commentator was raving about markovic. markovic was on right wing and he was winning everything juve couldnt get past him on that side. he was up and down so much energy. then that summer liverpool bought him. id rather have markovic rather than mcmanaman. but if atsu and ritchie want to play on the right where will markovic fit in? but if rafa plans on rotating players nearly every game who knows he might sign both markovic and mcmanaman.

  • 16 Our Toon // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:21 PM

Sissoko is still training at the club so no reason why he wouldn’t “man up” and return to the team.

Rafa has said he’s had no issues with him

  • 17 Our Toon // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:22 PM

Markovic isn’t coming, Liverpool Rafa is the only link

  • 18 Mr Funk // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:24 PM

I still think the most we would get for Sissoke would be £25 million. Clubs are not clamouring for Sissoko.

Would love NUFC to go for Lazar Markovic – could team up with Mitrovic.

I know Miles Starforth and Keith Downie said there is no interest from NUFC for Markovic but Starforth though Janmaat was going to West Ham and I am sure Downie has made incorrect predictions before.

  • 19 SPRINGY // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:25 PM

    our toon
was refering to the fact he’s supposed to be away with the national side, even though he’s meant to be injured.

  • 20 NUFCPaul // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:27 PM

For those of you wanting Wilshere to sign for the Toon on loan, why do you think Wenger is willing to loan him out in the first place? ‘To get first team football’ also known as ‘we’re paying this lad a ridiculous amount of money and he’s always injured – let him become someone else’s problem’. It would be a total waste of money and I highly doubt the lad would drop down a league. He’s a current international who is enjoying life in London, no way is he moving north to play in the Championship.

  • 21 Spoof // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:30 PM

Apparently Sissoko’s agent was at the Palace v Bournemouth match at the week end, could he be joining Bournemouth lol.

  • 22 mad-serb // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:32 PM

See Spurs are been link with a cut price for Le Sulk.

If there is ever someone that needs to pay over the odds for a player its them. They have ridiculous valuations for players sitting in their reserves and no cut prices are ever been seen.

35 million for u sir, and if you even try 20million offer then its 40.

    Levy just boils my blood.

  • 23 NUFCPaul // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:35 PM

Apparently Spurs are interested in making a late bid for Sissoko. If they offer 25M I’d snap their hands off. However, Daniel Levy is almost as frugal as Fat Ash and I think they’ll take the micky and offer closer to 15M to see if we’ll bite out of desperation – we won’t. Between Rafa and Ashley I think the answer will be ‘thanks, but no thanks’.

  • 24 Spoof // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:50 PM

  • 25 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:50 PM

    Our Toon
i dont think its the rafa link that created this BS story.
This is story is a permutation of our recent signing Lazaar.
Archaf Lazaar some how became Lazar, which turned in to Lazar Marcovic

As much as i would like to believe this as a possibility, i doubt it.

  • 26 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:52 PM

just think about how long the townsand negotiations took! you have two guys that only want to get a deal, cant see this happening unless ash takes low 20s

  • 27 Our Toon // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:52 PM

He had picked up an injury but has still been training, the only time he trains by himself is when we work on tactics and shape for matches, both rafa and sissoko have confirmed this

  • 28 Mr Funk // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:57 PM

    @ Taco

I think the rumor could come from the fact that Markovic and Mitrovic both played at Partizan Belgrade

  • 29 bettyswallocks // Aug 30, 2016 at 1:59 PM

If the highly unlikely happens and Sissoko doesn’t get sold then Rafa’s management skills will come into play These situations have occurred before and Rafa will be confident that he can re-motivate Moussa to get the fans behind him and maybe attract a buyer for January.

I am almost certain that Ashley has allowed Rafa the final say on transfers within their agreed budget and as he has spent wisely and balanced the books then there would be no reason for any pressure from above to sell.

  • 30 hibbitt // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:02 PM

  • 35 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:16 PM

Why is the Christian astu deal taking so long to be confirmed. I know we normally do take a while to confirm these deals, but The longer it takes, the more likely somebody else can hijack the deal.

  • 36 Belfast // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:17 PM

Gorgon you’ve cried all summer about the quality of signings but say signing Astu and Markovic is huge ??

No disrespect to them, but two players who have done nowt in England thus far ?

  • 37 lesh // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:19 PM

Maybe Rafa’s got wind of McManaman’s dirty play and doesn’t want that at SJP?

  • 38 Munster Mag // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:22 PM

I think rafa and charnley have overvalued sissoko and never denied 35 mill was the fee needed to sell him. He was never worth more than 25 mill or 30 at a push but 35 seems extreme to me.

  • 39 Belfast // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:22 PM

Liverpool looking rid of Markovic in this window will be the second manager there who doesn’t fancy him.

  • 40 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:23 PM

  • 43 SPRINGY // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:28 PM

  • 44 Spoof // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:35 PM

£4/5m to much ?, with all due respect £4/5m nowadays is peanuts.

it looks like tiote is getting pimped all over europe to try and get a move….not sure what the craic is with his”injury”or why his moved failed but its looking likely that he’ll be away, still not so sure about sissoko though, does’nt seem to be so much real interest as of yet.

  • 46 bettyswallocks // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:38 PM

There are quite a few part exchange deals as options which would make good sense for both parties but in reality these type of deals very rarely happen for some reason.

yes it is, but still seem a little steep to me thats all mate, the lad looked a decent player few year ago, cant say he didnt but seems to of went off the boil for one reason or another….im not talking about his discipline issues here,as its been done to death the last day or two, just his form.

  • 49 WWSBRD // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:41 PM

you been working ya sell mate?lol

  • 53 martoon // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:43 PM

Is it just me or is it crazy that the transfer window closes in the middle of an international break. I know not all transfers will involve international players but the majority probably will. So a player involved in a transfer has to get special permission to leave their training camp – surely it would have been more sensible to close the window last Sunday night.

  • 54 giimps // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:44 PM

For the amount of times Sissoko has “turned up”in the past couple of years, I would say he’s probably worth what we paid for him……maybe double but only because of the new tv deals but to ask a club to pay nearly 20 X what we paid is levyesque and as such we should hold out for £35m from Spurs ,Liverpool or Palace all 3 clubs don’t mind paying over the odds for players and Spurs ask for more than their available players are worth.
If we still have Sissoko in September we stand a better chance of going up then he can play for a premier league side again and help us push forEuropean football.
His agent won’t be happy as he will miss the boat on a huge transfer bonus unless he can persuade Sissoko to sign an extended deal……now that would be some 180 by Sissoko ……….I’d prefer the cash in the bank as Diame seems better in that role ,save the dosh for a few players in January if we need them ,or wait till Next season for reinforcements

  • 55 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:45 PM

Markovic would be far better for us than Atsu or McManaman. He has had it tough at Liverpool, but people seem to forget he is still only 22. He knows Mitro well (it was Markovic interviewing Mitro in that video where Mitro says he supports Newcastle whilst at Partizan).

Markovic has huge potential, and can play anywhere across the front pretty much. A year in the Championship with us could be the making of him, and he certainly has the natural ability to be a very good Prem player.

He would certainly add creativity and the skill to unlock opposition defences, something which we lack.

Between astu, mcmanaman & Markovic, Christian astu has got to be the best pound for pound value.
Astu & mac will cost roughly the same, but the return of the mac is bound to cause trouble with his fly kicks claiming to win the ball clean.
& Markovic is alot dearer, when astu can do just as good a job. If not better.

  • 67 Spoof // Aug 30, 2016 at 2:53 PM

Look at where he’s at, WBA, are they set up to suit him ?, look at how he was playing before his West Brom days, that standard would add another £10m at least to his asking price and at the age of 25 he is yet to reach his peak and if he rekindles his pre-West Brom form then £4/5m would be an absolute steal in today’s crazy market, £4/5m for this lad would be an absolute steal, however I have my doubts that we are interested in him as we already have Ritchie and Atsu seems nailed on so I do not expect us to go for another who is right sided, I’d much rather have had McManaman than Atsu because Atsu hasn’t performed at all in any English league whereas MaManaman has and he has done it in the PL as well, I seriouly think we are going for the wrong one, but that’s just my view and I swore blind that Townsend would prove to be a complete and utter waste of money and look at how well he played for us ?

    a) Sulko is on his way and were are looking for a replacement and asking around.
    b) These are the other possibilities we were looking at before deciding on Atsu as its was mentioned in the early stages of his link that he is one of the options we were considering.
    c) Goofy might have gotten his 3 year offer after his current performance and he is on his way.
    d) All of the above 🙂

  • 91 2_goal_tino // Aug 30, 2016 at 4:32 PM

@ YouCouldn’tMakeItUp – The most ridiculous thing about it is that we aren’t even buying the league. We have spent money and signed players but we are actually in profit this window and have a net loss of players.

Selling players who can’t/don’t want to do a job in this league and replacing them with those who can and want to be here isn’t by any definition buyinh the league.

Funny regarding Villa but rumour has it that Jordan Ayew may be on the move for 11M to Hull or Marseille ( Don’t know how accurate this would be but doesn’t seem much for a Jordan Ayew who showed some class at times, especially compared to buying Kodija for 15M.

    From NUFC site.

Newcastle United have completed the signing of young goalkeeper Otto Huutanen from Finnish club FC Ilves.
The 16-year-old, who was born in Tampere, Finland, arrives at United’s Little Benton Academy having undertaken a week-long trial last July.
And the teenager will link up with Dave Watson’s Magpies Under-18 squad.
Huutanen has been playing for Ilves’ under-19 side in his homeland, and he has also been capped by Finland at under-17 level.

Don’t know if it has been reported yet like.

I think your bet’s safe. You could give pardew citeh’s squad and he’d still make a hash of things.

Hartlepool United have signed ANOTHER striker after bringing in Tom Heardman on loan from Newcastle United.

  • 97 goommy // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:03 PM

Hope not. This kid was kind of an ‘Almost there’ player. He’s just like Obertan who make you think ‘Oh, he seem to got something good’ but never been there..

  • 98 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:15 PM

I see Pardew is doing his usual excellent job at Palace. One point. Tremendous. Now Remy coming in. It sounds like a decent attack but will Alan Pardew the quality oot of them? Very exciting times indeed for the Palace fans.

What’s Sissy going to do until the next window opens then? Has anybody got any house cleaning they want done? What about child care? He can take your little un’s to the park for a kickabout for only 30K a week!

  • 100 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:23 PM

Is Rotherham a good move for Armstrong? He needs decent management. Is Alan Stubby Stubbs up to it? I’m not sure about this one for Adam but I suppose we’ll have to wait and watch what happens.

  • 101 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:24 PM

I always enjoyed watching Obertongs kick the ball past a defender then race down the pitch only to be surprised that the ball was no longer there goomy mate.

  • 102 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:25 PM

    Obertongs! Obertongs!
    Don’t come back!
    Don’t come back!

  • 103 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:27 PM

How many points do we think Palace will have by the end of September? They play both Middlesbrough and Sunderland in there. I’m betting they’ll have a very exciting 5 points by that time.

  • 104 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:30 PM

Will Sir Alan be sacked by the end of October? I think it’s a strong possibility. Then what’s next for the Silver Fox? Stay tuned……

Just finished my latest interview with the amazing Graham Carr:
G2: Graham, with all the amazing signings you’ve made over the years for the club who do you really rate that didn’t quite make it with us?
Graham: well thanks for having me on G2. That’s a very difficult question. I thought all the players were top, top signings. I loved Thauvin’s hair for example. And the way he dressed. That’s what caught my eye in the first place. Then there was the amazing Cabella. Still think he could come over here and score a goal or two. Others? Well you have to think Hairdryer. He’s got a real future in something or other…..
G2: well ta for that Graham. I suppose you have to get back to work then….. (more’s the pity).

    Hairdryer! Hairdryer!
    No, no no!!!

  • 107 colwell // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:41 PM

Season started we had fcuk all pace in the team looked slow and not much of a threat now, Yedlin,Lazaar,Atsu and Mcmanaman next to Mbemba,Gayle,Diame we have a team that has so much pace. Shelvey smashing balls around and Ritchie just his awesome self we have one fcuk of a championship squad well done Rafa.

  • 108 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:44 PM

Well said Colwell, although I don’t really want McManaman.

  • 109 Ron Knee // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:45 PM

The move to Rotherham hasn’t been confirmed, or has it?

  • 110 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:48 PM

No it’s not confirmed yet Ron mate. Still I worry about sending him there. Is it good enough quality? Will he get the wrong mentality if they lose often? Will his giant heed fit through the top of one of their shirts? It’s all up in the air mate…..

  • 111 colwell // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:54 PM

If McManaman plays like he did a few years back you’ll love him I love his direct style and he causes so many problems with all this pace at last teams won’t press high against us

  • 112 ToonRich // Aug 30, 2016 at 5:59 PM

G2, my dads a Hibs fan and he rated Stubbs on the young loanees he brought into hibs the last season and they progressed. Now Rotherham as a team are a different kettle of fish IMO, so not sure on it…but Stubbs should be ok with managing Arma

  • 113 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 6:01 PM

That’s a big if colwell mate. It’s a long way back to his Wigan days. Not sure about him at all anymore….

  • 114 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 6:02 PM

Good to know ToonRich mate. Still going to such a struggling side is always a risk for a young’un I think. He’ll have to play very well right off to get Rafa’s attention.

  • 115 ToonRich // Aug 30, 2016 at 6:03 PM

Aye, hopefully he’ll be a started at Rotherham and score a few in this league and prove hes got what it takes.

  • 116 SPRINGY // Aug 30, 2016 at 6:06 PM

knowing bloody pardew he’ll get the boot boxing day and a will lose the bet the awkward sod!!lol

  • 117 SPRINGY // Aug 30, 2016 at 6:08 PM

  • 119 GeordieTwo // Aug 30, 2016 at 6:34 PM

Just been on the Eagle’s Beak lads. Very nice. I’m just asking them when they’re going to win a match. My comment is awaiting moderation right now…..
