Newcastle Get 5th Win In A Row – 2-0 At Derby

7:39 pm, Saturday, September 10th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 26 Comments

That man Yoan Gouffran scored a superb goal after 20 minutes in this game – his first in 20 months for Newcastle – and that put the Magpies on track to their 5th win in a row and four successive wins  in the league that takes us up to 2nd in thew league – still 4 points behind Huddersfield, who won 1-0 at Leeds today.

A stoppage time goal by substitute DeAndre Yedlin was enough to make the score look respectable and this was Newcastle’s fourth clean sheet in a row – as Rafa has seemed to have sorted things out with the team after those two early defeats.

Yoan Gouffran after scoring first goal on 20 minutes

Gouffran hit a first time effort from Jonjo Shelvey’s deep corner that went beyond the Derby goalkeeper – it was a terrific strike by the Frenchman who has been revitalized by Rafa at Newcastle.

And then in stoppage time new boy DeAndre Yedlin put in Ayoze Perez’s cross.

But it was a close game at the iPro stadium tonight, where both teams struggled to make an impact in the final third but it was Newcastle’s extra bit of class that got them the victory.

Derby have struggled to score in their first five games with only one goal, but goalkeeper Mats Selz had another good game and made two excellent saves to keep the clean sheet.

This was another good professional win for Newcastle as the team is starting to get to grips with what it takes to win in the Championship.

The team is starting to look solid at the back – and it’s been a very long time since we have been able to say that.

It’s not all about possession and beautiful football. It’s about winning. And today Rafa set the team up to win.

We gave them possession and defended well to start. Then after Gouffran’s goal we threatened on the counter and nicked a second. It was a tactically perfect game for the opposition we were facing.

    gouffran and anita both superb

ritchie, shelvy, gayle, diame and the centre halves all put in solid performances

wasn’t always pretty but we’re grinding out results like our last go-round here. great team performance

So good to see us defending like a unit now. Rafa is teaching the lads game control and how to properly defend. Solid and deserved win, derby never really looked threatening tbh, couldn’t break us down, we probably should have won 3-0 when diame broke through.

    Team for QPR:

    Anita Mbemba Lascelles Clark
    Shelvey Hayden
Ritchie Diame Atsu (If gouffran isn’t fit)

I expect Rafa to rotate again depending on whos fit/and to keep competition

Has Ed been on the acid? SBR’s got a blue face and the pitch is purple. Wtf is happening? 😉 even smiley faces have turned in blackberries.

forgot to mention colback too. he can be infuriatingly negative with his backwards passing at times, but came up trumps defensively on a few occasions that made sure we not only kept the clean sheet but went on to win.

oh, and dummet still doesn’t know that he can use his right foot. rafa should show him how cause it’s awfully pathetic to watch him twist and contort to get around to that left one…

Great result and performance!! Anita, Gouffran, Lascelles and Shelvey all had a great game. My man of the match is between Anita and Gouffran. Well done lads very well played, solid and played as a team containing one of our strongest rivals away from home. 2nd in the league now onwards and upwards with Rafa!

I read an article a while ago about football aesthetics, and what is defined as “good football” it was basically going on about how people typically only regard “tiki taka” type football as “good football” and it looked at how sides like atletico madrid who without the ball play as a coherent unit, and how that should still be considered as “good football”

Thought we were decent. Onto QPR now

Didn’t see game but pleased with win and Anita getting some good comments. Contrary to many on here I have always liked him as a player. If Gouffy’s work rate and goals keep him in the side then fine by me too.

Very good three points to keep the roll going.
One or two of the less fancied players all played an important part in a solid, if unspectacular, team performance.

Well done Toon, good away win, bring on qpr.

Interesting game, was like watching a game of chess, gouffram, Anita, and colback, was the top three players.

Think this will be the style of play away from home, Rafa is the Gaffa no doubt.

Bobby, have you seen Armstrong’s goal? Superb skills

  • 13 Belfast // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:50 PM

Anita – Didn’t put one foot wrong all game. The whole team worked hard apart from Diame basically who looked knackered.

  • 14 ilovetoon8788 // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:53 PM

Anita my motm. He’s turning into a very dependable player on this league.

  • 15 Belfast // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:55 PM

Don’t think Pearson will last that long at Derby to be honest. They seem disgruntled already.

  • 16 Bobbybee // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:55 PM

It wasn’t ed, it was my tablet went all psychedelic on me. Yes Clint, seen the goal mate, bit of magic from the wee man. Defender didn’t have a scooby lmao!

  • 17 clinath@ed // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:55 PM

I gave it to Shelvey, but really anyone from 4 would have been a good call. Great team performance.

  • 18 Blofal // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:56 PM

Exactly! Anyone who says that was a “poor game” is basing their opinion on wanting to dominate possession and playing lots of tricky passes.

For me a good game is having a solid defence and winning. Especially after watching so many years of us leaking goals! For the first time in years I don’t get a stab of fear every time there is a cross into our own box.

You might live a little longer now!

  • 20 Bobbybee // Sep 10, 2016 at 8:03 PM

Nothing poor about that game whatsoever. Clinical and managed to perfection. Controlled pretty much from start to finish. Doubt you’ll see a more dominant away performance this weekend. Even when they attacked (?) they hardly threatend a well drilled defence and in reality the score could’ve been worse for Derby. Best away performance for a long time – or have we forgotten already? Well done lads; well done Rafa. Sorted.

I know Dummett gets some stick of fans but I thought he had a decent game today. Covered his centre half And captain a lot.

  • 22 Toon Tang // Sep 10, 2016 at 8:05 PM

Yeeeesssssss. Class result for the toon, that Goufy volley was from downtown. Some bastard just needs to stop ‘uddersfield now.

  • 23 Toon Tang // Sep 10, 2016 at 8:10 PM

Legolas, Dummett has a good game pretty much every game. He gets stick from a few mainly due to him playing LB without doing the stuff an attacking LWB would do. He is absolutely solid defensively give or take but isn’t the type to to take on 3 players, storm the goal-line and whip a curling in-swinger pinpoint to mitros heed.

  • 24 Slank // Sep 10, 2016 at 8:16 PM

Like the game against Brighton it was difficult to choice one standout performance from any of the players.

It was a great team effort. What was particularly pleasing is how hard the players worked without the ball. They never stopped closing down the Derby players.

If I have to choose a MOTM it has to be Shelvey. He was tireless for the full ninety minutes. His passing was controlled. He refrained from doing outrageous passes. He looks so much more slimmer and fitter and seems to be enjoying himself.

Others who should be mentioned were Lascelles who was a rock in defence. Anita who is surely our best right back. Solid performance again. And the much maligned (of previous seasons but no more) Gouffron who worked tirelessly down the wing and showed again what a great technique he possesses at striking the ball.

    Well done lads.

3 points and they look like a group of players who will indeed work for each other. Diame looks as though he is trying to find his match fitness and his form but that I am sure will come soon.
They must be listening to Benitez and learning how the game must be played in this league and I think Benitez has enormous respect from this group of players.
I also think when the Toon get into a higher gear it will be too much for other teams in this division.
Don’t forget we could add more players in January to lift us out of this league and/or prepare for life in Premier next year.
