Shelvey, Gouffran And Gayle Start At Derby

4:33 pm, Saturday, September 10th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 235 Comments

derby countynufc-emblem

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has just announced the team for the tough away game at Derby County this afternoon and there’s a surprise with Jonjo Shelvey starting for Newcastle in midfield.

Newcastle: Sels, Anita, Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, Colback, Gouffran, Diame, Gayle
Subs: Darlow, Yedlin, Lazaar, Clark, Hayden, Perez, Mitrovic

So there goes our theory of Shelvey only starting in home games.

πŸ™‚

Newcomers Yedlin and Lazaar are on the bench and it’s rare that Isaac Hayden doesn’t start for Newcastle these days.

But Rafa is relying on players he knows at the club and will likely introduce the more recent arrivals slowly over the next few games and as we know – there are plenty of games coming up thick and fast.

It’s close to the team we had but we had Gamez at left back and Hayden in for Shelvey.

This is what Rafa Benitez has said about Derby County:

“I think they’re a good team. They have a good manager with experience, and I think that they will be at the top. How high, I don’t know, but they will be at the top end of the table,”

“We know that they have experience in this league, and they were doing really well. When you have a good team, it’s just a question of time that they will start performing.”

“Hopefully they can wait another week, we can do well, get three points and after, I will wish them all the best.”

“It’s always important to keep winning. When you talk about winning mentality, it’s not just that you are winning, it’s also that you approach every game thinking ‘we can win – we have to win’.

“It’s football, so anything can happen, but to go with the confidence that you can win is crucial if you want to stay at the top. We have this mentality.”

About seven fans in ten think we can get a win at the iPro Stadium today.

Colback is a surprise, though I guess it makes sense away from home.

  • 2 Dennis Twice // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:35 PM

    Attack Toon attack, attack!

  • 3 Malta Mag // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:38 PM

A little surprised that Colback is playing ahead of Hayden but I’m not in the anti Colback camp and always think he gives 100%. Quite an attacking look about us to be honest, even on the bench.

  • 4 Markaccus // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:38 PM

Only surprise for me is colback instead of hayden imo.

  • 5 geordie157 // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:39 PM

Strong side and bench, would ve liked Hayden over Colback.

Lets get those 3 points, pressure is already building on Pearson an early Toon goal and the crowd will be on their backs.

  • 6 WWSBRD // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:40 PM

Atsu doesnt make the bench? Not a fan of that tbh

Hughes starting for Derby as well is a worry but we are certainly strong enough to batter them

Looks like atsu and murph might have to wait for a home game before they get thier chance.

Rafa said you have to keep players motivated…..

I must admit I fear all the fouls Colback gives away in stupid areas

  • 16 Jib // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:43 PM

Christian Atsu and Daryl Murphy not even on bench
So will probably start against QPR

  • 17 Rafa Revolution // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:45 PM

    Surprised Colback is starting

  • 18 WWSBRD // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:46 PM

Tbf we have a lot of games in a short space of time so I imagine Rafa is using the squad

Shame for me because I wanted to see the strongest possible team (which I dont think this is) but its a smart move

Its quite possible we will see Ritchie sat on the bench and Atsu starting in the next week Id guess

  • 19 Bambams // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:47 PM

As it stands I think the mackems are in bottom two……

  • 21 WWSBRD // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:49 PM

Surely this must be our toughest set of games this season Brighton, Derby, QPR, Villa and Norwich and twice against Wolves in there too

  • 25 Markaccus // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:57 PM

    Legolas

The worry about Colback is that he might also try to break their players up. Hope he keeps his head today.

  • 27 Jail for Ashley // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:57 PM

It’s funny, I was thinking of a league for guessing the correct line up earlier today, five points for a correct guess, I bet not one single blogger had Colback in. I was way out, Murphy not even on the bench.

  • 28 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:58 PM

i wouldnt look at it as colback starting for hayden. Its more like benetiz is giving hayden a rest (even though he had a week off) and colback is playing that role. rafa said he is gonna mix it up to keep players healthy. This is another example. I think gouf gets the start because i see lazar and yedlin coming on in the 2nd half and he wants the defensive cover.

  • 29 IITianToon // Sep 10, 2016 at 4:58 PM

    Links guys??

  • 30 Markaccus // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:01 PM

    Jail

I’d have been one player out from the starting line up (colback), but at best I would have had 4 bench players correct. Rafa keeping everyone guessing.

Should be a belter tonight and Derby will be fired up. Still think we can win though, 3-1 just for laughs. Arma kicks off with another debut goal to nick all three points. πŸ˜‰ Nice to see Toney score as well. A good day so far, let’s cap it off. Howay the lads!!!!!!!!!

  • 43 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:16 PM

As I expected with the exception of Colback for Hayden. I’m sure Rafa has his reasons.

One glaring issue with Colback’s game is the petty fouls and lack of self-control when hassling a player. Tends to be good at pressing them into tight spots, but then goes overboard and gives away needless free-kicks, often in dangerous areas. If he can sort that out he’s fine.

  • 44 Derek // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:17 PM

Not quite sure about the way the formation is listed here. Is Ritchie playing alongside Shelvey and Colback?

    3-0 toon

  • 46 Blackley and Brownlie // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:17 PM

    Gorgon
Anita is sound at right back. Mitro doesn’t deserve to start. I base that on his whole time at Newcastle.

    Hail
Conceding free kicks in dangerous areas is typical of Colback. I trust Rafa has seen this and sorted it now.

  • 49 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:23 PM

Gonna go for another 2-0 win. Diame and Ritchie.

  • 50 Markaccus // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:23 PM

    Gorgon

Anita has done nowt to deserve dropping. Has been our best right back since near the end of last season. Gayle is clearly the first choice CF over mitro, in form alone!

  • 51 Rotonda heights // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:23 PM

    colback playing usually = losing.
sick of people saying he’s a 100 percenter.
    That should be a given.
what’s the point of that when you have no speed, can’t create anything, can’t tackle properly, can’t score, can’t pass and are forever giving away daft, stupid fouls. I know hayden may need a rest but surely not for colback. saying that, I hope he has a blinder.

  • 52 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:27 PM

Ha ha, belter goal from Arma. Pure class.

  • 55 Spoof // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:28 PM

Colback instead of Hayden, now who would have guessed that, so what role does Shelvey have, with Hayden being as strong as he is Shelvey has been good at getting us attacking, will he be able to do that with Colback, I expect that Rafa feels that Colback can and for such a big game away from home he has decided to go with the experience of Colback and allow Hayden to learn his trade is less vital games, then again Rafa being Rafa he has done it to keep every one on there toes.

  • 56 Blackley and Brownlie // Sep 10, 2016 at 5:30 PM

I hope Shelvey’s not going to spend the evening dropping deep and taking the ball off the toes of our CBs.

The original ref got injured in the warm up…

Early on Derby looked lively, since the goal we’ve looked assured in defence, just need to be careful we don’t switch off, like that!

Still need more from the front 2.

Big fan of Diame, but he’s cruising around doing a bad Shola impression so far and Gayle non-existent.

    Options aplenty on the bench.

Hope Gouff isn’t injured, looked like an awkward fall, think his studs stuck in the turf as he twisted to the ground.

  • 129 Kabul Fish // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:21 PM

    Hope Goofy is ok.
Some quality diving on display today…

  • 130 Blackley and Brownlie // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:22 PM

I wonder what Mick Lowes was saying about Gouffran after that goal. Probably choked on his Gingster and couldn’t speak.

  • 131 AncientC // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:22 PM

    Midfield Pass Succession.

    Gouffran 100%
    Ritchie 96%
    Colback 96%
    Shelvey 94%

You can tell we have a Spanish manager.

  • 132 sing in the corner // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:23 PM

Ha ha Colback has played canny in my opinion, as have the team generally. Anita has managed the right side pretty well.
    Howay the lads.

Ps. Gorgon talking a load of shoyte, all half, as per usual.

  • 133 clinath@ed // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:24 PM

TOON controlling the game comfortably. Not a great spectacle. Hope we don’t get too complacent/cocky, then we should be fine.
Shelvey went quiet the last 15 mins, maybe just getting a breather. More of the same should see us through HWTL.

  • 134 santon3 // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:24 PM

surely Gouffran worth more now than sissoko

  • 135 Blackley and Brownlie // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:24 PM

Colback looks like an accident waiting to happen. It’s a mercy he tackles shadows half the time.

  • 136 Bobbybee // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:25 PM

No such thing as a bad game when you’re winning. The game can fall to pieces as long as we win. Derby are the home side, it’s for them to dominate and they ain’t, so we’re on plan. We’re there to win the game and we’re winning. Don’t worry be happy.

  • 137 WWSBRD // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:26 PM

Functional and controlled…no classic but NUFC look hard working and comfortable so far

Dummetts crosses though haha bless him at least he’s trying these days I suppose

  • 138 lukes26 // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:27 PM

Its a little boring to watch, but really good half if you’re Rafa

The back 4, colback and shelvey have been excellent. Derby look thoroughly frustrated chasing the ball & cant do much when they do have it

ritchie and diame playing below their standards.

  • 139 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:28 PM

Wow, just seen Armstrong’s goal. Brilliant goal, reminded me of something Gianfranco Zola would do.

Expect he’ll score the goals to keep Barnsley near the sharp end, made 1pt into 3 today. We won’t allow them to extend his loan in Jan if that’s the case, especially if we’re in fairly close proximity in the league.

  • 140 Novocastrian66 // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:29 PM

Dummy is awful. Hopefully we’ll score a second or it will be a hard watch.

  • 142 toonking // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:31 PM

Rafa will be a great improvement in most ways but even he might have one similarity to the mclown and pardue that similarity is a injury plaqued team.

  • 143 Tsunki // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:31 PM

Thing is Derby are no real threat. I dare say Rafa will put the spectacle to one side in favour of cruising to 3 points in 2nd gear, conserve energy, minimise injuries. A lot of games to go. I’d be happy with another goal and sign off with with with a yawn fest. πŸ™‚

  • 144 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:31 PM

I’d be telling Diame and Gayle to give us more or they’ll be hooked within 15mins.

Mitro and Perez will eagerly be awaiting to replace them.

  • 145 Tsunki // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:32 PM

    Sorry about the stutter lol

  • 146 Jammydodger // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:33 PM

/Dummet is crossing though, getting the ball into, well near ish, the box. defending well though. I dont get the Dummet. Solid in defence ok going forward, hoofs it a bit but at least he doesnt try to dribble and then loose it leaving a masiive space for wingers to run in behind

  • 147 Thump // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:33 PM

@Tsunki: Thing is Derby are no real threat.

Oh god, you had to say it, didn’t you?

  • 148 Bobbybee // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:33 PM

Hail, he’ll take points off all our rivals, which can’t be bad. Took his goal very well today, but no surprise there.

  • 149 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:37 PM

Colback very casual in pressing then.

    Mbemba with his first mishap.

  • 150 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:38 PM

Similar start to the 1st half, we’re casual and Derby are lively.

Smart from Gayle to win that.

  • 151 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:40 PM

That Vydra is looking for a pen every time he gets into the box the slimy git. Have to be careful.

  • 152 sing in the corner // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:40 PM

Derby seem really tired, they started both halves very strong; but then just seem really lethargic

  • 167 anthc // Sep 10, 2016 at 6:56 PM

Yep, Shelvey and Mbemba for me.

    Diame selfish there.

  • 189 BandB // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:16 PM

Colback having a good game, I’m told, and Shelvey there for the outlet ball. So there’s an argument for seeing the game out with those two if it stays 1-0.

  • 190 ilovetoon8788 // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:17 PM

We barely need to get out of 2nd gear to beat our rivals. Says it all.

  • 191 sing in the corner // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:17 PM

    Bri
I’d say it’s been decent game management from us on the whole, apart from a 15 minute period where we got sloppy. We’re away from home against one of the fancied sides before the season started. These teams have looked poor for the last few weeks, because we have been getting better at stopping the opposition playing.

  • 192 manxpie // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:18 PM

With you on Mbemba 1st half, but 2nd half he was the only momentary dent in our armour in the back 4. That misjudged headed clearance the only mistake from any of them.

Some good signs Rafa is fully aware of player’s weaknesses and is working to improve them. Shelvey much more considered in his selection of pass, frequency of killer passes attempted reigned in. Colback didn’t give away any silly fouls from my recollection.

  • 231 Blofal // Sep 10, 2016 at 7:40 PM

It’s not all about possession and beautiful football. It’s about winning. And today Rafa set the team up to win.

We gave them possession and defended well to start. Then after Gouffran’s goal we threatened on the counter and nicked a second. It was a tactically perfect game for the opposition we were facing.
