Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has just announced the team for the tough away game at Derby County this afternoon and there’s a surprise with Jonjo Shelvey starting for Newcastle in midfield.
Newcastle: Sels, Anita, Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, Colback, Gouffran, Diame, Gayle
Subs: Darlow, Yedlin, Lazaar, Clark, Hayden, Perez, Mitrovic
So there goes our theory of Shelvey only starting in home games.
🙂
Newcomers Yedlin and Lazaar are on the bench and it’s rare that Isaac Hayden doesn’t start for Newcastle these days.
But Rafa is relying on players he knows at the club and will likely introduce the more recent arrivals slowly over the next few games and as we know – there are plenty of games coming up thick and fast.
It’s close to the team we had but we had Gamez at left back and Hayden in for Shelvey.
This is what Rafa Benitez has said about Derby County:
“I think they’re a good team. They have a good manager with experience, and I think that they will be at the top. How high, I don’t know, but they will be at the top end of the table,”
“We know that they have experience in this league, and they were doing really well. When you have a good team, it’s just a question of time that they will start performing.”
“Hopefully they can wait another week, we can do well, get three points and after, I will wish them all the best.”
“It’s always important to keep winning. When you talk about winning mentality, it’s not just that you are winning, it’s also that you approach every game thinking ‘we can win – we have to win’.
“It’s football, so anything can happen, but to go with the confidence that you can win is crucial if you want to stay at the top. We have this mentality.”
About seven fans in ten think we can get a win at the iPro Stadium today.
We need the win this afternoon.

Comment #43As I expected with the exception of Colback for Hayden. I’m sure Rafa has his reasons.
One glaring issue with Colback’s game is the petty fouls and lack of self-control when hassling a player. Tends to be good at pressing them into tight spots, but then goes overboard and gives away needless free-kicks, often in dangerous areas. If he can sort that out he’s fine.

Comment #44Not quite sure about the way the formation is listed here. Is Ritchie playing alongside Shelvey and Colback?

Anita is sound at right back. Mitro doesn’t deserve to start. I base that on his whole time at Newcastle.

Conceding free kicks in dangerous areas is typical of Colback. I trust Rafa has seen this and sorted it now.

Anita has done nowt to deserve dropping. Has been our best right back since near the end of last season. Gayle is clearly the first choice CF over mitro, in form alone!

Comment #51colback playing usually = losing.
sick of people saying he’s a 100 percenter.
That should be a given.
what’s the point of that when you have no speed, can’t create anything, can’t tackle properly, can’t score, can’t pass and are forever giving away daft, stupid fouls. I know hayden may need a rest but surely not for colback. saying that, I hope he has a blinder.

Comment #55Colback instead of Hayden, now who would have guessed that, so what role does Shelvey have, with Hayden being as strong as he is Shelvey has been good at getting us attacking, will he be able to do that with Colback, I expect that Rafa feels that Colback can and for such a big game away from home he has decided to go with the experience of Colback and allow Hayden to learn his trade is less vital games, then again Rafa being Rafa he has done it to keep every one on there toes.

Comment #56I hope Shelvey’s not going to spend the evening dropping deep and taking the ball off the toes of our CBs.

The original ref got injured in the warm up…
The substitute board wasn’t charged up so there is one on the way in a taxi…
A player was recently “Viciously” injured by a football in training!?!

Comment #66Derby are more direct and more threatening. While we are good at passing it around our back 4 in our own half.
