Last week captain Jamaal Lascelles was talking about one of the new signings – Chelsea’s Ghanaian International winger Christian Atsu – and he said he was a great signing for the club and unbelievable.
And it seems that Rafa Benitez has been impressed with what he’s seen of Atsu in training so far.
Christian Atsu – in training gear
Atsu signed for Chelsea from Porto three years ago for £3.5M and the 24 year-old has been loaned out to various clubs since then, but he’s only played 55 times in the last three years and scored 7 goals with 9 assists.
This is what Rafa has said about new boy Christian Atsu in the local press:
“It’s interesting because we have had very good reports.”
“Some people were a little concerned about his lack of game-time, but what we have seen and the info we have is quite good.”
“He will settle down and get fit.” “In training, he has been offering the things we expect from him.”
“We are really pleased because he’s the kind of winger we were looking for.” “Hopefully he can give us what we are looking for.”
“I am sure he will give us good games, assists and some good goals.”
If Christian Atsu does impress for us we can buy him for the amount in the loan contract and that cannot be too much – maybe £5M?
If that’s the case and he plays well for us this season he could turn out to be a terrific signing for Newcastle.
Christian has pace and skill and can both score goals and create them and he seemed delighted to join the club on loan.
